Bishops’ complaint an all-out war on contraception

I think it’s important to understand just what the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is demanding in its war against contraception coverage. Here’s USA Today on the matter:

The White House is “all talk, no action” on moving toward compromise, said Anthony Picarello, general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “There has been a lot of talk in the last couple days about compromise, but it sounds to us like a way to turn down the heat, to placate people without doing anything in particular,” Picarello said. “We’re not going to do anything until this is fixed.”

That means removing the provision from the health care law altogether, he said, not simply changing it for Catholic employers and their insurers. He cited the problem that would create for “good Catholic business people who can’t in good conscience cooperate with this.”

“If I quit this job and opened a Taco Bell, I’d be covered by the mandate,” Picarello said.

In other words, the bishops are not merely demanding that church-affiliated organizations be exempted from the requirement that contraception be covered in health insurance. They are insisting that the contraception requirement be abolished altogether.

The proposed legislative fix endorsed by the bishops, HR 1179, makes that explicitly clear. It states that no insurer or employer can be required to provide coverage if paying for such coverage “is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the sponsor, issuer, or other entity offering the plan; or (if) such coverage (in the case of individual coverage) is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the purchaser or beneficiary of the coverage.”

Again, that is not a fix limited to churches or church-affliated organizations. It would prohibit the contraception requirement across the board, for every employer and insurer.

If you had any doubts about how political this all is, that ought to resolve them. Twenty-eight states, including conservative Georgia, have had laws on the books for years that require contraceptives be covered, with not a squeak of protest or complaint.

And yet now it becomes a threat to religious liberty?

I remember how Bookman told us that the increase in the minimum wage would have no effect on the employablity of younger, especially minority workers. The AJC has piece today about the extremely high rates of unemployment of young minority workers.
Bookman has no credilbity. He is just a parrot for his masters.
This particular column is particularly shameful as he is lying about the real issue which is freedom of conscience and has a long pattern of lying about the reality of the overreaching health care reform act.
LIberty is draining away at the hands of Obama and the left. More and more we are being controlled and dictated to by the government in every domain of life.

“The “potential consequence” you speak of is a matter of indidivual choice and has little impact on the “health care perspective.”

Irrelevant? Bingo on the above and thanks for helping to make my point.

BTW…your reply to my view of the Scalia ruling proves that you’re not a lawyer either. You should at least know that the law is all about precedent and it’s interpretation. That ruling can be interpreted to go against the mandate argument and its constitutional legality.

The next US president is likely to appoint at least two Supreme Court judges.

This independent voter has no great affection for our current inept inglorious leader, and I would prefer to vote for someone w/a more libertarian bent on social issues (and on guns and drug issues) and a more reasoned and moderate view on economic issues as well as a more pragmatic view on international issues. But, I also expect Georgia to again follow its “bible belt” leanings toward the GOP.

However,

Any woman that wants any of the top-tier GOP candidates to appoint those judges is either being very short-sighted with regard to the rights of their female children, grandchildren, etc. — or she is of the “M” ilk of an S&M bent of mind.

I was only acknowledging that more of the illegals from south of the border are Catholic than the current, (Protestant) “evangelical” political right.

My point is that in this globalized world w/immigration policy in the US like an unlocked if not open door, so the “majority” could, potentially, change.

It comes under the heading of, “be careful what you wish for”.

I disagree w/”libs” on a number of issues–economic and guns– but am certainly more progressive than the right-wing-nuts that want to teach creationism in school as fact and omit the theory of evolution entirely.

I’ve been listening to Ron Paul as an alternative to our current, inept leader; however, he seems a bit shrill on some issues, and perhaps even obtuse on foreign policy–he has not indicated how he intends to create policy w/regard to the defense treaties we now have. If we can bring home most troops from overseas and maintain our defense partnerships by other means, this could be a good thing. On the other hand, if all our troops are in the US, we can expect the next world war to be fought here, too?

I don’t want to be claimed by anyone; believe everyone should think for themselves.

President Obama’s policies have not been the voice of reason. They are even further to the right than George W. Bush could have achieved. At least a Republican president would have confronted a Democratic Congress blocking the kind of program that Obama has rammed through. Back to Jays article…

The Catholic church as been known to change rules–once priests could marry. The rules of the Catholic church are, like the rules of all religions, man-made rules.

If the Catholic church wants to operate hospitals and clinics and have them serve as a branch of their church, then, as long as it is not tax-payer supported, I have no problem with that, however

…it needs to be made clear to both the facilities and to all potential patients that no taxpayer $ will go to those facilities –including medicare or medicaid.

????? DO ANY OF YOU KNOW ?????

I’ve not seen the specific wording of the documents to which the Catholic Church is objecting. Do those documents/rules/regulations/laws require that to stay in business the Catholic hospitals/clinics must either provide birth control and/or perform abortions or is it just that to receive any funds from gov’t they must provide these services?

A little greed on the other end of the spectrum:

http://newsok.com/seiu-makes-play-for-dues-from-conn.-subsidy/article/feed/345852

“The SEIU achieved this goal in Michigan, with the result that even low-income families who receive a Medicaid subsidy to take care of their adult, disabled children are losing $30 a month to the union. “Our daughter is 34 and our son is 30,” retired police office Robert Haynes said of the Michigan unionization. “They have cerebral palsy. They are basically like 6-month-olds in adult bodies. They need to be fed and they wear diapers. We could sure use that $30 a month that’s being sent to the union.”"

3rd party unions are bleeders……….out for themselves. And folks only focus on the greed in places like Wall St.

Thanks for the link.

Solution is simple–just end all employee insurance. And
Find or have created an independent “credit union” for medical employees w/i a specific geographical area through which employees can buy their group insurance of choice covering what they want and/or don’t want via riders–and, of course, pay the employees enough that they can afford the insurance.

like that word “CHOICE”.

If I were one to bet ( and if it were legal ), I’d bet many Catholics would want birth control and even abortions available to them as well.

you must be getting up there in years.

Yeah, but I still have my own teeth. Which is a miracle, considering I’ve said smart@$$ stuff like that since I could talk. I can probably even outrun a beer truck for short distances if I’m really terrified.
