Bishops’ complaint an all-out war on contraception

I think it’s important to understand just what the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is demanding in its war against contraception coverage. Here’s USA Today on the matter:

The White House is “all talk, no action” on moving toward compromise, said Anthony Picarello, general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “There has been a lot of talk in the last couple days about compromise, but it sounds to us like a way to turn down the heat, to placate people without doing anything in particular,” Picarello said. “We’re not going to do anything until this is fixed.”

That means removing the provision from the health care law altogether, he said, not simply changing it for Catholic employers and their insurers. He cited the problem that would create for “good Catholic business people who can’t in good conscience cooperate with this.”

“If I quit this job and opened a Taco Bell, I’d be covered by the mandate,” Picarello said.

In other words, the bishops are not merely demanding that church-affiliated organizations be exempted from the requirement that contraception be covered in health insurance. They are insisting that the contraception requirement be abolished altogether.

The proposed legislative fix endorsed by the bishops, HR 1179, makes that explicitly clear. It states that no insurer or employer can be required to provide coverage if paying for such coverage “is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the sponsor, issuer, or other entity offering the plan; or (if) such coverage (in the case of individual coverage) is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the purchaser or beneficiary of the coverage.”

Again, that is not a fix limited to churches or church-affliated organizations. It would prohibit the contraception requirement across the board, for every employer and insurer.

If you had any doubts about how political this all is, that ought to resolve them. Twenty-eight states, including conservative Georgia, have had laws on the books for years that require contraceptives be covered, with not a squeak of protest or complaint.

And yet now it becomes a threat to religious liberty?

If you read my post, I didn’t say it will “remain calm”. However unlike many on the “right”, I do not think this notion that Iran can shut down the straight is something that will last very long. Other countries will increase production and the straight will not be closed for too many days.

To your point, will prices increase? yes Will it last and be the catastrophic event that some Fox and radio pundits have been saying for 5 or 6 years now? no

Iran is ratcheting up the rhetoric because the sanctions are working. Whether they have the ability to launch a nuke, I do not have that info. When I look at Iran’s past, outside of supporting proxies (Hamas and Hezbollah), they are not exactly into invading or bombing other countries.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, February 8, 2012,
One of the most influential evangelical leaders in the United States says Christians should go to jail rather than comply with the Obama administration’s mandate to provide all contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs, in their health care plans.

Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), told LifeSiteNews.com “we will not comply” with the Dept. of Health and Human Services’ mandate requiring religious institutions to cover abortifacient products such as Plan B, Ella, and the IUD.

“We want the law changed, or else we’re going to write our letters from the Nashville jail, just like Dr. King wrote his from the Birmingham jail,” Dr. Land said.

md: I don’t think “stupid” enters into the equation……most war is “stupid”.

Stupid does enter into it, or rather Iran’s lack of stupid when it comes to war/conflict with the US. They do not want that, despite their bluster. They have seen what happens when you pick on the U.S. and the fact that Obama is in the White House doesn’t change that at all, especially considering things like Seal Team 6 and drones….

Because of ALL THAT and more, they will NOT be able to close the strait, nor will they try.

One fellow from the Boston area proclaimed that his favorite band was “Hot,” a group no one else had ever heard of. He was mystified and eventually infuriated that no one else knew who “Hot” was.

And I’m flashing back to an early business meeting with a guy in a Boston suburb who wanted to know if I had a cod.

I’m thinking, “like… a fish? a pet fish?”

He got kinda hrrumphy and said, “no, a cod. A business cod.”

Please keep in mind…. there is a huge difference in brainwashing OTHERS to blow themselves up vs one blowing himself up for Allah or any other God.

The Mullahs and Clerics who run “Mr Members Only jacket” out to say Israel is this or that, we will do this or that……….. Like power just politicians and leaders have since the beginning of time. Of course there are those who want Israel destroyed, but wanting something and doing it my friend isn’t the same game. I don’t see the top Mullahs and Clerics deciding all to die, because havoc will be reigned down on them, so Israel can be nuked

First The Big Government took over the Auto Industry, Health Care, Big Business, the schools, etc. Now Big Government wants to control religion. Is there anything left? What is it about liberals that they can’t stand the thought of anyone being allowed to do as they wish? I stand with my Catholic brethren. I am a devout Druid and I will dance naked in the moonlight on Summer Solstice and there is nothing you left wing tyrants can do about it.

Just because they have made up in their head that they will have a reward that is not of this world does not mean that the desire to blow oneself up and ignore all consequences to threatening action is not completely bound to the world we live in. It is a fact of their DNA and upbringing and has nothing to do with some outside supernatural influence.

“We played a minor part in the mission against Lybia.”

Bosch, I beg to differ, we played a major role. First of all we got it started, took a backseat role and when NATO began failing, we stepped back in again. If we had not stepped back in the outcome in all probability would have been much different.

Bosch — “We played a minor part in the mission against Lybia.”

IIRC, we pulled back from a combatant role in Libya as the 90-day War Powers Act limit approached. The Act is fuzzy on what, exactly, involves ‘deploying troops overseas into combat,’ so we kept our air crews out of Libyan airspace and concentrated on playing Big Daddy Support by providing fueling and maintenance services as well as lots of high-speed intelligence and surveillance for our allies who were still performing combat missions. It seems that the President complied with the letter of the act, though whether he complied with the spirit of it is debatable.

IMO, it was a pretty fine distinction and possibly amounted to hairsplitting, but it seemed to mollify Congress — as they seemed to lose interest in debating the issue any further once the President took our involvement down to that level.
