Bishops’ complaint an all-out war on contraception

I think it’s important to understand just what the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is demanding in its war against contraception coverage. Here’s USA Today on the matter:

The White House is “all talk, no action” on moving toward compromise, said Anthony Picarello, general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “There has been a lot of talk in the last couple days about compromise, but it sounds to us like a way to turn down the heat, to placate people without doing anything in particular,” Picarello said. “We’re not going to do anything until this is fixed.”

That means removing the provision from the health care law altogether, he said, not simply changing it for Catholic employers and their insurers. He cited the problem that would create for “good Catholic business people who can’t in good conscience cooperate with this.”

“If I quit this job and opened a Taco Bell, I’d be covered by the mandate,” Picarello said.

In other words, the bishops are not merely demanding that church-affiliated organizations be exempted from the requirement that contraception be covered in health insurance. They are insisting that the contraception requirement be abolished altogether.

The proposed legislative fix endorsed by the bishops, HR 1179, makes that explicitly clear. It states that no insurer or employer can be required to provide coverage if paying for such coverage “is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the sponsor, issuer, or other entity offering the plan; or (if) such coverage (in the case of individual coverage) is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the purchaser or beneficiary of the coverage.”

Again, that is not a fix limited to churches or church-affliated organizations. It would prohibit the contraception requirement across the board, for every employer and insurer.

If you had any doubts about how political this all is, that ought to resolve them. Twenty-eight states, including conservative Georgia, have had laws on the books for years that require contraceptives be covered, with not a squeak of protest or complaint.

HR 1179 looks like a pretty rational middle ground, creates a “rider” for such coverages. If one wants the coverage, one purchases it; if one does not, one is not obliged to subsidize the abomination. Since it is a reasonably intelligent middle solution, we can rely on leftists to object. Not with any reason, just object.

I ran a little Lexis Georgia search for the term “contraceptives” The first thing I found was a photo of Nancy Pelosi – guaranteed to cause anyone to refrain from the process of reproduction.

Next was OCGA §33-24-59.6. It states that HEALTH BENEFIT POLICIES [not EMPLOYERS] are required to include coverage in policies written in Georgia. Apparently Georgia does not have a mandate upon employers [maybe they do if they are a self-insured entity - it does not say].

I don’t know of any employers that pay 100 percent of an employee’s insurance. Based on that, the employee’s share of the insurance cost is paying for BC. So the Catholic Church has no leg to stand on. I think we have another social issue about to blow up in the GOP’s face. For the last several weeks, the GOP has resembled Wile E. Ok let’s face it people, the Catholic church is not an enemy. It is those in power who think they can FORCE people, especially those outside their faith, to do things their way. THAT is what is happening when they operate as an employer, religiously affiliated or not, of a non-religious institution such as a college or hospital, and then turn around and say they should be able to DENY their employees the same health care the rest of the country gets.

Regardless, the point was can you take your gf/wife/hookup/one night stand/friend/mail ordered bride/ect. to court if they’re pregnant (half of the baby is made up of your DNA) and decide to have an abortion against your will? I was just asking a simple question.

The two posts I referenced inferred that the Bible had no standing in regards to abortion or homosexality. I posted some verses that I feel DO support that abortion and homosexuality are sins.

Since you state that you can post Scriptures as well, please post the ones that say that abortion or homosexuality is NOT a sin.
