I think it’s important to understand just what the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is demanding in its war against contraception coverage. Here’s USA Today on the matter:
The White House is “all talk, no action” on moving toward compromise, said Anthony Picarello, general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “There has been a lot of talk in the last couple days about compromise, but it sounds to us like a way to turn down the heat, to placate people without doing anything in particular,” Picarello said. “We’re not going to do anything until this is fixed.”
That means removing the provision from the health care law altogether, he said, not simply changing it for Catholic employers and their insurers. He cited the problem that would create for “good Catholic business people who can’t in good conscience cooperate with this.”
“If I quit this job and opened a Taco Bell, I’d be covered by the mandate,” Picarello said.
In other words, the bishops are not merely demanding that church-affiliated organizations be exempted from the requirement that contraception be covered in health insurance. They are insisting that the contraception requirement be abolished altogether.
The proposed legislative fix endorsed by the bishops, HR 1179, makes that explicitly clear. It states that no insurer or employer can be required to provide coverage if paying for such coverage “is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the sponsor, issuer, or other entity offering the plan; or (if) such coverage (in the case of individual coverage) is contrary to the religious beliefs or moral convictions of the purchaser or beneficiary of the coverage.”
Again, that is not a fix limited to churches or church-affliated organizations. It would prohibit the contraception requirement across the board, for every employer and insurer.
If you had any doubts about how political this all is, that ought to resolve them. Twenty-eight states, including conservative Georgia, have had laws on the books for years that require contraceptives be covered, with not a squeak of protest or complaint.
And yet now it becomes a threat to religious liberty?

After wading through 10 pages of comments I find it interesting that no one has pointed our the options of the Catholic hospital and universities or other such organizations have to avoid complying with the state or federal madates to provide birth control or reproductive services to their employees.
(1) Decide to not offer any health care coverage (or)
(2) Become a self insured entity and forego any particpation of a health care insurance provider
If option 1 is selected I can see many employees deciding to seek employment elsewhere and if they select option 2 then as the employer they will have to pay for any covered medical procedures out of income.
But if their principles are that important then they should not have trouble deciding on which option to select to avoid “goverment attacks on their religion.”

yet another example of what is WRONG with America.
first, you don’t want the government to provide health care because employers do.
now, employers are saying it’s a benefit, not a right, and we should be happy with what we get.

Yeah right…Politico. I won’t disparage their survey but if you asked Catholics along with many non-Catholics of faith and probably many others as well if they thought it was right for the federal government to mandate services that conflicted with a religious denominations doctrine that’s been practiced in this country under our Constitution since our beginning , they would say no it isn’t right. Politico didn’t ask that way.

The Roman Catholic Church is dying a slow, ugly death of it’s own making.
Since the 1960s, four American-born Catholics have left the church for every one who has converted, according to a 2009 Pew study. In 2008 alone, Catholic membership declined by 400,000. More than 1,000 parishes have closed since 1995, and the number of priests has fallen from about 49,000 to 40,000 during that same period. Some 3,400 Catholic parishes in the U.S. now lack a resident priest.
And the plethora and magnitude of the sex scandals has only accelerated the decline.

To me, this is above and beyond “religious discrimination” or “Forcing a thoecracy”. This is going to be the spirit of the battles that are waged in America as we move further along as a mixed capitalist society in regards to Federally concentrated power. We do things as a society to “protect” everyone, but it can put us in a bad situation. I don’t know contraception prices, but if prescription ones are reasonably expensive, as a society we have put people in a position of HAVING to have insurance to afford it. At the same time, we force people to pay for something that “beneifts” another individual (note individual, not society as a whole) that is counter to their conscience. Akin to allowing alcohol to be purchased with food stamps…I don’t drink to excess, but think people should be able to make up their own minds about it. however, should my tax $$ go to fund a behavior that is against my conscience?
There are no easy answers, because we are where we are, but I do think there is no happy medium. As a society, we either need to focus on more personal responsibility, or on more collective respobsibility, but we are at a spot in the middle now that is unacceptable to all…
And don’t get me wrong…I don’t think all personal or all collective is the answer, but I think to have any semblance of functionality, we have to move right or left…

No, its next to the part where he said we should put these three (oops), two stone tablets in every frickin public spot on the planet…..and totally ignore all 10 bulleted points.

So what you have openned up Jay is a Catholic bash session. Let’s be honest.
See like long ago when you were espousing the rightness of the Dutch Government to illegally raid the church archives. Of course you never did report the results of the raid, here I will tell you. They found nothing.
So liberal thinking goes like this: It’s wrong to hate gays, muslims, minorities, fat people, etc. But its a-ok to vocally hate Christians and Christianity. That’s whats really happening here.
You deliberately opened the doors for hate speech against Catholics and the church because you hate Catholics and the Church. This is all just Christian bashing, you know damn well that the clause in the health bill mandating this is illegal and unconstitutional. There is no argument on that.
But why miss an opportunity to do some good ol’ fashion Christian bashing. That’s all that’s going on here. To say otherwise is a lie.

“I provide you with 2 different surveys showing you the same thing and that’s the best you can come up with??? disparaging Politico???”
USinUK, your problem is that you can’t come up with one that proves your point. The fall out from this issue will unfold over time and quite possibly at the November voting polls where it will be determined if it had any impact on the election. That question won’t be determined by any survey Politico comes up with that you would like to believe proves your point. The Obama administration is appearing to back peddle on this issue and that says they’re not taking any poll to the bank.

Butch, do some homework yourself. Catholic Church institutions in Georgia do not pay for coverage of BC, sterilization, Abortificants, nor abortion services. I know this for a fact. Some of us work in the industry…. We know first hand what is and what is not covered.

A statement by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

“We intend to require employers that do not offer coverage of contraceptive services to provide notice to employees, which will also state that contraceptive services are available at sites such as community health centers, public clinics, and hospitals with income-based support.”–Kathleen Sebelius 2012

should my tax $$ go to fund a behavior that is against my conscience?
Pacifists don’t get a 50% reduction in their income taxes.
Scientologists don’t get out of funding Medicare/Medicaid.
Zero Population growth believers still have to pay property taxes for schools.
Why are these any different? BTW “that’s not about evil vajayjays” is a pretty lame answer.

This Catholic moralizing is making me sick. There should have been this outraged when it came time to completely overhaul the system that permitted rampant pedophilia. I bet they would be all for allowing free contraception if little boys could get pregnant.
The Catholic church has given up it’s moral authority. In my book it never should have had any.

Oh lawdy I just realized I’ve been shirking my responsibilites. The girl down the street is 25-30, single, and I’ld be shocked if she aint doing the naughty. I gotta run down their and give her my $25 share this month to pay for her birth control if indeed she is on the pill. It just aint right that she should have to pay for it by herself. It just aint!

It is not ok to hate Christians. It IS ok to call them out for being stupid. Much as it would be if a gay man or a woman or a black person was being stupid. It is STUPID to think this provision, which is a carbon copy of almost all of the 28 dates that have similar provision, is ZOMG ATTACK ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!
