Let’s do some travelin’ on board the Soul Train!

You knew where we were going this week, didn’t you? And you knew how we were going to get there, too, I’d bet.

Hop on board the Soul Train, courtesy of your conductor, the late Don Cornelius, who passed away this week at the age of 75. I gotta say, I got a real kick out of going through the Youtube videos for Soul Train, especially the line dance segments. Somewhere, I bet, there are a lot of grayhaired men and women dipping into those videos to show their grandkids just how fly they were they were back in the day.

Love peace and soul, Don. Love peace and soul.

…just how fly they were…

Now dig this, I had purple bell bottoms, with a white belt that had to be three inches wide, some gawdful LOUD polyester shirts, a dapper jacket and platform shoes.

Oh yeah baby, those and the stylin’ felt hat.

I wasn’t just fly, I was Superfly!

(And I’d be mortified if I ever saw any photos of me in that garish garb. Oh the foibles of youth…)

Cornelius always seemed like kind of a strange cat to me.

Very reserved, almost aloof. Even with his guests.

I didn’t really care because all I wanted to hear was that monster soul, R&B and funk. And the occasional white boy gone to the dark side! LOL!

Check out the crowd gettin’ off on Bowie…

Well, I don’t do soul train stuff on account of it’s Those People, you know. But I thought I’d leave you all with one by a guy even other singers called The Voice. You know when you’re called The Voice you got a serious set of pipes. Old Vern’s been gone now close to three years and sometimes I don’t feel so good myself. Anyhow, soon as I finish work, I’m heading to Billy Bob’s and I might could put a few quarters in the jukebox and listen to Vern some more, especially Set ‘Em Up Joe. But for now

There might not be many white folks with rhythm enough to dance, but there’s many who have soul. :)

Here’s one that Don Cornelius seemed to really enjoy! Heh… (I’m dedicating it to Karen Handel’s political career.)

And yeah, the list of white artists who played Soul Train is pretty damn long.
