In a recent debate in Florida, Mitt Romney was asked how he plans to end the lengthy war in Afghanistan, given that he has rejected the idea of trying to negotiate with the Taliban.
“By beating them,” he answered.
It was a strong, manly answer, short and to the point. And yes, beating them sounds like quite an appealing option.
On the other hand, we’ve been at it for more than a decade now, through a good part of three presidential terms, and have lost more than 1,800 American lives in the process. And we don’t seem to be much closer to “beating them” than we were when we began. While we’ve succeeded in weakening the movement, Taliban leadership has retreated to havens in Pakistan, where we continue to strike at them when possible via drones and missiles. Short of an invasion of Pakistan, “beating them” seems a very tall order. If Romney has specific ideas on how that might be accomplished, I have not seen them.

In fact, two of Romney’s own foreign-policy advisers, Mitchell Reiss and James Shinn, have publicly endorsed negotiations. As Shinn writes with co-author James Dobbins in “Afghan Peace Talks: A Primer”, the bottom-line goal of U.S. policy must be to prevent a return of al Qaeda to Afghanistan. He and Dobbins write:
“The United States can prevent this indefinitely as long as it is willing to commit significant military and economic resources to a counterinsurgency effort. It cannot eliminate the threat, however, as long as the Afghan insurgents enjoy sanctuary in and support from Pakistan. The United States could also achieve its objective if the Taliban could be persuaded to cut ties with al Qaeda and end its insurgency in exchange for some role in Afghan governance short of total control.
Peace negotiations would obviously be desirable if they could succeed in achieving this objective, but they are also worth pursuing even if they fail, as the risks associated with entering such a process may be greater for the insurgents than for the Afghan government and its allies.”
There’s a lot of hard truth packed in those two paragraphs. As Shinn and Dobbins write, we can keep the Taliban at bay as long as the United States “is willing to commit significant military and economic resources to a counterinsurgency effort.” But we aren’t willing to do so forever, and we know it. Public opinion in this country has turned sharply against an open-ended continuation of the war, and the Afghanis are growing tired of our presence as well.
In fact, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has from time to time denounced NATO forces as occupiers, claiming at one point that “It is just for their national interest that they put our lives under their feet and dishonor the people.”
In light of that reality, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta this week announced plans to end active U.S. involvement in combat in Afghanistan by the end of 2013. U.S. forces after that point would serve to train and assist Afghan government forces, including providing air cover, air transport and logistics support. But the brunt of the fighting would be done by the Afghans themselves.
Yesterday, Romney cast scorn on that approach, describing Panetta as “misguided and naive.”
“He announced that so the Taliban hears it, the Pakistanis hear it, the Afghan leaders hear it,” Romney said. “Why in the world do you go to the people that you’re fighting with and tell them the day you’re pulling out your troops? It makes absolutely no sense. [Obama’s] naivete is putting in jeopardy the mission of the United States of America and our commitments to freedom. He is wrong. We need new leadership in Washington.”
With those seemingly passionate comments, Romney repeats a refrain against announcing timelines that became familiar during the Iraq years. But again, it’s a curious stance. Because you see, Romney himself has publicly endorsed a deadline of 2014 for the withdrawal of almost all NATO military forces, including Americans, from Afghanistan. To borrow his language, Romney announced that support “so the Taliban hears it, the Pakistanis hear it, the Afghan leaders hear it.”
So I’m not sure exactly what his argument is, other than to make meaningless noise on the campaign trail and try to pump himself up as a strong-willed military leader.
If we are going to withdraw almost completely by 2014, leaving behind perhaps a group of advisers, trainers and intelligence specialists, it seems reasonable and rational that you would give the Afghan security forces a year to find their footing before handing them full responsibility.
But hey, if Romney has a plan for how to “beat the Taliban” and yet be out of Afghanistan by 2014, and to do so without giving Afghan security forces a transition period in which they take the lead role with strong U.S. backing, the American people would like to hear it.
Otherwise, his rhetoric comes across as macho blather, and I believe that rather recent experience has soured the American people on that for a while.

The priority in those first two years, focus rapidly crafting a health care bill riddled with issues and now under fire heading to a showdown in the SCOTUS
Seems the first focus that the deluded omit was the recovery act and fixing healthcare was a secondary project that incorporated many Republican ideas and concepts. But again, the inconsistent claims seem to come faster than a Bachelor contestant sending home some without their roses…..

Oh and I guess I can’t really enter the “are you better off than you were 4 years ago” debate. Our family income has increased by almost $40,000 in the last 4 years along with the fact that our retirement funds are WAY up from where they were 4 years ago. While our house lost some value, it is still worth more than we paid for it and we recently refinanced it at a significantly lower rate (and a smaller amount).
But I also realize that our circumstances are much different than a vast majority of Americans.

You’re talking about the ultimate in small arms lethality. The scary thing is that what’s being done on a .50 cal will probably readily scale down to smaller caliber rounds that carry just as much punch as the .50 does. Check the ballistics on the .408 CheyTac and the .416 Barrett when you have time. My one question would be whether the technology could be reverse engineered from someone who’s been “dismissed” from the field of battle.

True. However, if those new folks are only able to find employment that puts them in that 47% that pays no fed income taxes, that revenue is still diminished from what it would otherwise be if the tax sale was allowed to end as it should have 2 years ago.

That’s a sniper weapon with an absolutely *godawful* range, but IIRC, the Geneva Conventions prohibit the use of large calibers like that against unarmored human targets in the open. As I recall, you can use a 50-cal against a vehicle or structure that enemy troops were known to be *in,* but if they exited said vehicle or structure ran out into the open, you’re prohibited from sustaining fire on them with the ‘fitty.’

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/column-doing-the-math-on-obamas-deficits/2011/08/25/gIQALDBchQ_blog.html
But if you’re a deficit-obsessed voter, the clock doesn’t answer the key question: How much has Obama added to the debt, anyway?
There are two answers: more than $4 trillion, or about $983 billion. The first answer is simple and wrong. The second answer is more complicated but a lot closer to being right.
When Obama took office, the national debt was about $10.5 trillion. Today, it’s about $15.2 trillion. Simple subtraction gets you the answer preferred by most of Obama’s opponents: $4.7 trillion.
But ask yourself: Which of Obama’s policies added $4.7 trillion to the debt? The stimulus? That was just a bit more than $800 billion. TARP? That passed under George W. Bush, and most of it has been repaid.
I’m hoping that you were not trying to push the weight of that $15T solely on Obama. Nobody can turn a supertanker or stop a freight train on a dime. To expect one man to do such is pure tom foolery.

Saul Alinsky?
Who’s his buddy? Who’s his pal!
From Media Matters – (We’ll hear about that, but will we hear the message disputed? Nope.)
Tea Party leader and “the co-founder of Top Conservatives on Twitter” Michael Patrick Leahy has written an entire book based off of Alinsky’s “shocking” work, deftly entitled: Rules for Conservative Radicals: Lessons from Saul Alinsky[!] the Tea Party Movement and the Apostle Paul in the Age of Collaborative Technologies. In his book, “Leahy argues that today’s conservative radical should follow the tactics of Saul Alinsky, but apply the morals and ethics of Martin Luther King.”
And Leahy is not the only conservative poisoned by what right-wing blogger Pamela Geller calls “the mother’s milk of the left.”
Conservative “hero” and Fox News’ favorite investigative journalist James O’Keefe is also a fan. The Los Angeles Times reported that O’Keefe found an “unlikely source of inspiration” in Alinsky and O’Keefe “took to heart” Alinsky’s principle to: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
Also, on Fox News’ Glenn Beck, David Horowitz advocated for conservatives to follow “what Saul Alinsky argues”—i.e., “shout[ing] things whether they are true or not,” and “stag[ing] a die-in” — in order to “catch the other side off-guard” and win the health care debate.
Alinsky’s “evil” has even reached all the way out to the Heartland, with The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reporting: “in Kansas City, Missouri, a group of conservative organizers will conduct a most unusual training session. They will teach the “Rules for Radicals’ laid down by the god of community organizing, Saul Alinsky. The idea: learn to recognize the footprints of the enemy.” Similarly, The Washington Independent’s David Weigel has reported that “Alinsky has found a thriving and surprising fan club in the modern conservative movement,” with “many ‘Tea Party’ activists say[ing] they’re cribbing from Alinsky.”
Yes, if Geller and the other bloggers on the right are to be believed, Obama is coming for your children through the vessel of Saul Alinsky. And in Geller’s own words: “Can you imagine if the Republicans attempted such a stunt?” The mind boggles.

As well as for a raft of other reasons, I would not, in ten lifetimes, vote for the fraud from Massachusetts. But this is reason Number One:
“He announced that so the Taliban hears it, the Pakistanis hear it, the Afghan leaders hear it,” Romney said. “Why in the world do you go to the people that you’re fighting with and tell them the day you’re pulling out your troops? It makes absolutely no sense. [Obama’s] naivete is putting in jeopardy the mission of the United States of America and our commitments to freedom. He is wrong. We need new leadership in Washington.”
These simpletons cannot even spell statesmanship and they denigrate leaders who are not rabidly and incessantly pro-war.
But that silver-spoon fed coward is NOT the change we need. All that this newest of the anointed Bush asskissers wants to be is the next great “Crusader”.
Even so, you fools are gonna vote for him anyway. Just like you did for the (W)orst ever. “Hey, ain’t my kids getting killed or maimed, (we come from a LONG line of service avoiders) so why should I care if the toy soldiers and chickenhawks in Washington are already drooling at their collective mouths to invade Iran?”
Mission Accomplished.

Obama captured Obama? You may want to check that Pea.
However, I certainly think that if you are going to demand that Obama be responsible for any rise in the deficit from the day he takes office, you certainly seem very inconsistent in suggesting that he has no responsiblity for the killing of OBL. He certainly had more input and leadership involved in deciding to approve a military plan than the deficit.

Don’t know what they are not teaching this small contingency of the military that somehow thinks that everyone in uniform is their brother and sister until they become civilians and then they can show pure contempt and disdain for civilians and call them names as if they are something lesser (sort of like F Troop testosterone calling others candy arses on a nameless blog being the big shots that they are) but frankly if you want the support of the civilians who make sacrifices also so that your families are provided for and so that you are cared for because of your sacrifice and service, perhaps you need to work on comprehension of mutual respect and some humility in comprehending that in the long run, you are a civilian with no special rights to certain opinions, vote or superior rights. You bring shame on yourself and the other fine military families who disagree with you and understand that as a country we all make sacrifies.

I know what I’m talking about, so I’d appreciate a direct answer to my query, Cowboy, not some bluff and bluster bulldada so you can do the cowardly dodge out of answering a polite question.
You said “Hamas. Hezbullah, and the Muslim Brotherhood” were “KILLING our soldiers.” I’d like to see some hard evidence that those groups are involved in that, not the say-so of some no-name blowhard on an internet message board.

JKL2: “Could we at least get Hillary to replace Biden if nothing else?”
What a day it is when the conservatives are touting Hillary Clinton as a worthy replacement. Her role in the conservative imagination has done a 180 in just under a decade.
Wonders never cease.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I know I have done a 180 on her. (and it’s more than a decade since she served her first term as President lol). I really dispised that woman and thought she was dangerous. but I also think that in her first term as President she learned that you have to compromise and negotiate with people, you can’t just ram everything down their throats (like Pelosi did with Obama care). If it had been Hitlery running against McSame instead of Obama I would have voted for her. Hell, I would vote for her over Obama right now……..
