In Florida primary, the margin will matter

With the voting booths scheduled to open tomorrow in Florida, pollsters are all over the place in their predictions about the outcome.

Everybody has Mitt Romney winning. The discrepancy is in the predicted margin, which matters in a primary.

A Suffolk University poll has Romney up by 20, 47 percent to 27 percent. A Quinnipiac poll puts Romney up by 14, 43 percent to 29 percent, up from a nine-point margin a week ago.

But Georgia-based InsiderAdvantage claims the Romney-Gingrich race is tightening, with Romney up by five percentage points, 36-31 percent. Matt Towery, InsiderAdvantage’s founder and owner, has ties to Gingrich, which might be cause for caution. But Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning firm, has it 39-32.

That’s a fairly wide spread this close to an election, which means somebody is going to have egg on their face when this is over. If the tighter projections prove valid, Gingrich has some justification for continuing to fight, perhaps all the way to the convention as he promises.

A margin of 20 points or more, on the other hand, would pretty much spell the end of the race. That’s particularly true if exit polls show Romney beating Gingrich even among conservative Republicans.

Of course, such a defeat doesn’t necessarily mean that an increasingly bitter Gingrich would withdraw from the race. He feels abused and ill-used by his party’s establishment, and he may decide to stick in the race just to be obstinate. Back in the Iowa days, you may remember, Gingrich was trying to convince everyone that he had really changed and was no longer the angry, combative politician he used to be.

That Grandpa Gingrich act didn’t last very long.

I’m not sure what a “conservative Republican” is; I thought we are all Conservative. That aside, the base is pi$$ed. The elites of the party want Romney, but the base does not. Romney and his superpac are spening enough in FL to buy the outcome. Romney and Newt are compromised. I want Santorum.

Romney has made lots of money for himself. He is truly the only one who doesn’t need the job. So, I got to figure he is in it to actually try to do for the country a little bit of what he has done for himself. We need somebody with a good business sense and he is the guy. I get the impression from Gingrich that he is just a little bit dirty. If anything, Romney is almost too squeaky clean for this country. I mean, after all, it is a country where people still laugh at ignorant stuff like My Redneck Vacation.

Well, good to be home to Fox News and what I need to think (sure makes it easier on the brain) after a hard day of hauling, lugging, and humping.

It looks like the upstate FL rednecks are going to get run over like a possum when the polls open down there tomorrow. Mr. Morman Underpants done bought the election. And I see the women have all ganged up against old Newt. Run around with two or three different wifes and they’ll hold it against you forever. I tell you, make one little mistake with a woman and she’ll throw it in your face for the next 70 years. Even at your funeral. My Daddy was right. It was a big mistake to give them the vote.

Anyhow, old Newt will be OK in time. He’ll be dumping this third wife in a year or two. She just plain costs too much. I can’t hardly beleive he let the Catholic Church make his kids b—tards to marry her.

And one question: when did josef start putting the big J in front of his name?

It doesn’t appear from polls and Romney’s momentum from the Florida debates that Gingrich will pull out a win or even come close. Even if he comes close he doesn’t have the organization or Republican establishment supporting him also his primary funding source Sheldon Adelman may not put up sufficient money for his continuance in the race.

HDB,

W inherited a weak economy from Clinton. Remember the .com bust? And then as you mentioned 9/11 hit and W had yet another blow go against him. Yet the economy recovered and the middle 6 years were moderate growth with low unemployment. As a matter of fact unemployment didn’t begin to rise and the recession wasn’t realized until after the Dems took over Congress. Coincidence? Nope.

The reality is that the middle years of the W economy were simply better than the Obama years. Facts are facts.

Some more facts. The recession hit in 07 and I believe it ended either right before or right after Obama came into office Jan. 09. We do know from Jay’s little jobs losses chart from several months ago that jobs losses had bottomed already in Jan of 09 when Obama came into office- I believe it officially ended in March 09 just after O came in. So things were already bottomed out and getting better as Obama was entering office. Nevertheless lets give Obama a mulligan for his first year 2009. Now what’s his excuse for 2010? What’s his excuse for 2011. Wait. Lemme guess. Its still W’s fault 3 years later?

The reality is that nearly 3 years after the recession ended we are still mired in terribly anemic economic growth numbers. There is no sugarcoating it ma’am. From what I’ve read this is the single worst recovery from a recession since the great Depression. Those are the facts. Just the facts ma’am. Now ya’ll git to work on your litany of excuses for this man’s abysmal failure.

I’ll be back in a few hours to examine your litany of excuses to see if any of them will hold a drop of water. Odds are none will but I’ll check anyway just to amuse myself. You got your homework. Now get to work!

Maybe she can pull some obscure link crazy black woman who claims that Mitt, like W, had her kidnapped by local cops and brought to the governor’s mansion so that he could rape her. I still can’t decide what was funnier. That ridiculous link that Midori provided or the fact that she believed it.

Someone brakes your legs–makes it harder to win a race, even if you, supposedly, otherwise have a “fair” chance; and the US economy DID have broken legs when Obama took office. When Bush took office, there were ‘bruises’ but not ‘brakes’ and it was on the mend–not needing billions in fix-it fund to be given to PRIVATE, for mega-profit banks.

that said, ‘following’ the mistakes of Bush w/a second ‘bailout’ of FAILED banks was really STUPIDITY, not leadership

This great news brought to you by your moron “leaders” in the Bush administration and the Pentagon…

Reporting from Washington — After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, the George W. Bush administration flooded the conquered country with so much cash to pay for reconstruction and other projects in the first year that a new unit of measurement was born.

Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry $2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a $12-billion haul that U.S. officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time.

This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins. But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

josef,

I can’t stay long, but I came back to check on your response.

“what has he done for gay rights other than sign DADT repeal and take a rather lukewarm stance on DOMA…?”

Ordered federal government to extend key benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees

Hosted first White House LGBT Pride Reception in history

Created a National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Elders

Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr.Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law

Ended discrimination based on gender identity in the federal government

Lifted the ban that prohibited people with HIV/AIDS from entering the United States

Allowed trans Americans to receive true gender passports without surgery

Clarified the Family and Medical Leave Act ensuring family leave for LGBT employees

Ensured hospital visitation and medical decision-making rights for gay and lesbian patients

Released America’s first comprehensive plan to prevent and end homelessness, which includes homeless LGBT youth

Led a United Nations measure that restored “sexual orientation” to the definition of human rights

Signed the Repeal of and oversaw successful implementation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Ensured that government housing programs are available to all eligible people, including LGBT community

Proposed more funding for LGBT priorities such as HIV/AIDS prevention and education, and bullying and teen suicide prevention

Declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and announced the administration will no longer defend its constitutionality in court

Hosted a Conference on Bullying Prevention at the White House

Completed an Institute of Medicine study on LGBT health, the first of its kind

Clarified the meaning of “family” to include LGBT relationships, helping to protect bi-national families threatened by deportation

Supported lesbian widow Edith Windsor in her suit against DOMA

Issued guidance to foster safer working environment for transgender federal employees

Just because it is not splashed across the news, does not make it unimportant.

You say on one hand, “Not coming out guns blazing on DADT? Yep, he signed it…and I give him credit there…but he’s p’footed from the get-go” then say”It went a lot faster on DADT than I expected.” Perhaps the reason DADT is history, is because he took a slow, methodical approach, and actually ended up having the military advocate its repeal. What reaction do think would have come about if on the 1st day in office Obama signed a Presidential Order instead of the approach he took?

“I’ll give him a point or two in not being outspokenly opposed, but let’s not go giving him credit he’s not due”

You’re not even giving him the credit that is due him. If you thought for minute, that “fierce advocate” meant stripping down to a thong and dancing on a KY float down 5th Ave at Gay Pride you are going to be disappointed.

I look at his actual accomplishments and judge him by that…not my expectations. You judge him on a Rick Warren and Prop 8, when Obama has stated, “I personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. But I also agree with most Americans, including Vice President Cheney and over 2,000 religious leaders of all different beliefs, that decisions about marriage should be left to the states as they always have been.”

It seems you want so badly for Obama to embrace your views, that when he does not, you ignore or belittle all the other accomplishments he has done for gay people.

Able-bodied adults on the main welfare program (TANF again) have to abide by work requirements — they have to work, or look for work, or train to work to receive benefits. This seems like a reasonable condition to apply to the food-stamp program, as well. Some congressional Republicans have advocated this policy, but the Obama administration hasn’t been interested.

Gingrich’s hyperbole, and the reaction to it, shouldn’t obscure the need to reform the food-stamp program as the economy improves. The program ought to be focused on people in real need — not people who are taking no steps to find work, or who happen to have had minimal contact with the welfare bureaucracy. And changes to the program ought to be accompanied by reforms to programs that raise the price of food. We know that ethanol subsidies boost food prices significantly, for example, even if the exact amount is disputed. Federal dairy policies raise the price of milk: They are designed to do so.

jm, in all seriousness I have some doubts about Reuters’ reasoning in their slap at Krugman. It seems their main argument boils down to a comparison with France and Italy:

In other words, markets have lost much more faith in the creditworthiness of Italy and France than they have in Britain’s.

But the comparison with selected individual Euro zone countries is misleading because the fate of those countries is closely tied up with the fate of the Euro zone as a whole and the complicated problems of the Euro zone as a ‘transfer zone’.

Or, why not a comparison with Greece, another Euro zone country that has also implemented savage austerity?

I don’t think a president will have much say in the issue of gay rights, given the Congressional make-up. The bottom line is that any Republican president is about 100% certain to sign any anti-gay measure. Obama is iffy, but at least there’s a chance there. If I were gay, I certainly wouldn’t want to see any Republican, with the possible exception of Ron Paul, in the White House. And I don’t believe for a second that a Republican Senate would have any hesitation at all about discarding the filibuster rule if it suits a party purpose. We need to remember that the “nuclear option” was raised as a possibility in order to get two Republican-backed Supreme Court nominees through confirmation back when the Republicans controlled the Senate. In any case, Obama is the safer bet. While he’s not 100% certain to protect gay rights, he at least is not 100% certain to act against them.

I don’t believe that those who’re homosexual should be denied civil rights but I don’t think they’ve been denied those rights. Further I don’t believe their right to civil rights should be at the expense of those who’re not homosexual. Should they have the right to marry? Well why marry when they can’t procreate? They do have the right to a civil union, which provides all of the legal rights associated with a union between two people including those who’re legally married. Should they have the right to adopt children? In my opinion no, but that’s a legal consideration, so mine is only a personal opinion. Do I agree with the repeal of DADT? no. Do I think that homosexuality is normal and should be taught as such to young children? no. Do I condemn homosexuals? No. I view practicing homosexual sex to be a sin, but I cannot condemn anyone who does practice it because we’re all sinners and unworthy of God’s salvation. There is no such thing as small sin versus greater sin. God views every sin as an equal abomination. That is where I come down on this issue for those who didn’t know. Taps

Except they don’t. And even if they did, when did “separate but equal” become the motto of the US?

Maybe if straight people stopped abandoning their obligations this wouldn’t be an issue. But so far straight people have proven they can’t be trusted.

I believe if Mitt continue to follow Newt’s Language which was an article in Sunday’s paper, he will clearly be the nominee before the GOP convention. In the 90s Newt used to tell his GOP colleagues how to attach their opponents with strong adjective words like; welfare, liberal, sick, pathetic, corruption, corrupt, disgrace, lie, waste, etc to gain GOP majority and he became speaker of the house. Now that Mitt is using the same words on him, he called him pathetic. Newts downfall came right after he was endorsed by Herman Cain. Sarah Palin did not even know if Africa was continent and she supports Newt, go figure the blind leading the blind. The GOP establishment may be stupid but not that stupid to make Newt the nominee. This time the folks in South Carolina are dead wrong.

no I’m perfectly aware

keep in mind those laws were only recently ruled unconstitutional. point is, up until recently they existed, were passed in the past for one reason or another. even if they were rarely if ever enforced.

I was mentioning it as food for thought, that’s all.

jewcowboy,

You come on this blog and seem to want to celebrate your sexual orientation that frankly I couldn’t care less about as I’m sure most people don’t. I posted because someone else commented referencing my name within their post and I wanted to document my position on the subject without someone else presuming to do so for me. Now you state that the law precludes me from condemning you or any other practicing homosexual. No it does not I’ve chosen not to do so on my own for the beliefs described in my previous post.

Not much of a point then. Miscegenation laws were passed for one reason or another. Until Loving v. VA that is.

Yet, you want laws to discriminate against gay people. Interesting.

“I wanted to document my position on the subject ”
Only you can?

“Now you state that the law precludes me from condemning you or any other practicing homosexual.”
Sorry…I should have been more clear. You can believe in whatever you choose. You just can’t use the laws of this nation to enforce your views on others. You don’t want a gay marriage, don’t get married to someone of the same sex.

Point of fact, most of the people on here that are “joking and laughing hysterically about “santorum” are straight (at least based on previous posts, but in reality who knows). I don’t know what all Santorum has said. I’m not a fan of the guy and haven’t paid him much attention since pretty much the beginning.

You may not like the guy, but politics and civil rights are serious business (obviously). You don’t have to show him respect. There are plenty of opportunities to prove the guy isn’t worthy of the office of the presidency without resorting to jokes about “santorum”.

Yes, because I’m sure all the bigots in the world like Santorum would turn and embrace every gay person if they would just stop making fun of him. Seems to me, people like Santorum (and many on this blog) can dish it, but when it comes flinging back in their face they run like children, crying about victimization. Perhaps if zealots like that turned down their animus, then others wouldn’t have to return in kind.

Newt is mad, his ego is hurt, and his wife was put into a bad light by the ex-wife interview with the media making big news out of it. His status as the nice, friendly, and reasonable adult in the race is now long gone, and he didn’t like all the hard ball Romney played in Iowa, and is now playin in Florida. If Romney wins big tomorrow, what will Newt do . . . whatever will he do? Will he stand back and accept that his continued presence will only help Obama win a second term? Yes, he might do that, and monkeys might fly out my butt tomorrow morning. For all his talk about putting America back on track and getting rid of a guy who has shown no leadership and has been in way over his head from day one, Newt’s ego is far more important to him than that. I’m sure that he and his ego cannot believe or accept the fact that as a Con in the Pub party, a moderate Pub is beating him. And it makes him mad . . . mad enough to make sure that Romney doesn’t win election. Newt will not stop, and he may not stop even after the election. He has no prayer of beating Obama and winning a national election . . . only Romney has that chance, and his chances are being reduced every day by all this Pub in-fighting.

Believe me, Newt doesn’t care what happens if he doesn’t win, and Paul is a Libertarian, and Santorum is about 4 to 8 years too early. The Pub establishment must be made up of complete morons to have allowed all of these debates, and most of them with long gone nitwits lie Palin, Perry, and Bachmann. Newt’s continued presence, and the the continuing Pub debates could spell the end of any meaningful Pub chance at regaining the White House in November. Why is it that I know that, but the Pub party leaders have not figured it out yet? Obama is not much of a president and even less as a leader, perhaps one of the worst in history, but Obama is waking up now because it is time to campaign, his one and only talent. Hard to believe, but true.

I kind of hope we have a horse race in Florida. It is a sign of how unorganized the GOP really is. Romney looks like the school teacher who has lost control of his class as Newt flatten spitballs on the blackboard. It also shows this Republican electric is just too immature to rule a nation. They rather destroy a party than compromise, after they did great damage to our government. These boys need to be contain to a lab and not let out into the environment. A close election in Florida gets us one more step towards the Republican Party self destructing, and with it goes a lot of poison this country needs to purge. Our nation in every way in 2012 is improving, that is what a close election means in Florida.

tireofit you got love the Republicans. They get beat by Obama so they dress a black man up, try mightily to cover up this poor character, and bring him out as a 2012 knock off to what they interpret as an answer to Obama. They test drive it and the wheels fall off. The fact that O has been married for decades to the same woman, apparently no affairs, has wonderful children, has his mother in law living with him, who was a very successful woman in her own right and they think any black body equals this man really puts us into the camp of these people’s thinking or lack of it. Seems somehow the far right should be more like O and the far left should be Cain, but the respect for woman is a Democratic thing so that wouldn’t work would it.

Then they pull out a guy who really matches their base, mean, arrogant, loose with the facts and a taste for the finer things in life including the ladies. The problem here is he was a family man that has been married three times, a Christian that was Roman Catholic and a character that had been fined for ethics violations by his own party. A party I might ad that brought us Nixon, so how high can that bar be. It is like one of the Hollywood parties where the bring a corps into the room, put it in a seat, have a cigarette hanging from it’s mouth and half the party doesn’t realize the guy is dead.

In the end they have found the only moderate in the entire party which in itself makes you wonder how many lies this guy has to tell just to make it though the primaries. He is like a gay guy in a straight world or even worse a hookytonk bar of rednecks.

Somewhere is all this I keep waiting for the church to disassociate themselves from these fools before they do irrefutable damage to what use to be a real light in the darkness. As people mutate for their own rewards, the church should be constant. Not only have these people done great damage to our country, they have bombed our churches for their own gain.
