Our ‘Marxist in chief’ and the state of our union

Let’s be honest: There is no discernible difference between those who insist that Barack Obama is disqualified by birth from serving as president and those who claim that he is a Marxist or socialist. Both are equally absurd.

Neither group has any factual ground on which to base its inane charges; in their rhetoric, both groups tell us far more about their own internal psychology than they do about the president.

Consider, for example, this portion of last night’s State of the Union address from our “Marxist in Chief”:

First, if you’re a business that wants to outsource jobs, you shouldn’t get a tax deduction for doing it. That money should be used to cover moving expenses for companies like Master Lock that decide to bring jobs home.

Second, no American company should be able to avoid paying its fair share of taxes by moving jobs and profits overseas. From now on, every multinational company should have to pay a basic minimum tax. And every penny should go towards lowering taxes for companies that choose to stay here and hire here in America.

Third, if you’re an American manufacturer, you should get a bigger tax cut. If you’re a high-tech manufacturer, we should double the tax deduction you get for making your products here. And if you want to relocate in a community that was hit hard when a factory left town, you should get help financing a new plant, equipment, or training for new workers.

There were other steps announced as well: “a Trade Enforcement Unit that will be charged with investigating unfair trading practices in countries like China;” a “Financial Crimes Unit” of highly trained investigators to crack down on large-scale fraud; a new education initiative aimed at improving work skills among 2 million Americans; a policy that will reduce federal funding to colleges that allow tuition to rise too quickly, putting them out of reach for many in the middle class.

And then of course there’s this:

“As I told the Speaker this summer, I’m prepared to make more reforms that rein in the long-term costs of Medicare and Medicaid, and strengthen Social Security, so long as those programs remain a guarantee of security for seniors.

But in return, we need to change our tax code so that people like me, and an awful lot of members of Congress, pay our fair share of taxes.

Tax reform should follow the Buffett Rule. If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes. And my Republican friend Tom Coburn is right: Washington should stop subsidizing millionaires. In fact, if you’re earning a million dollars a year, you shouldn’t get special tax subsidies or deductions. On the other hand, if you make under $250,000 a year, like 98 percent of American families, your taxes shouldn’t go up. You’re the ones struggling with rising costs and stagnant wages. You’re the ones who need relief.

Now, you can call this class warfare all you want. But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense.

We don’t begrudge financial success in this country. We admire it. When Americans talk about folks like me paying my fair share of taxes, it’s not because they envy the rich. It’s because they understand that when I get a tax break I don’t need and the country can’t afford, it either adds to the deficit, or somebody else has to make up the difference — like a senior on a fixed income, or a student trying to get through school, or a family trying to make ends meet.

That’s not right. Americans know that’s not right. They know that this generation’s success is only possible because past generations felt a responsibility to each other, and to the future of their country, and they know our way of life will only endure if we feel that same sense of shared responsibility.”

That last point is critically important. Those who oppose the president’s tax-reform policies condemn them as divisive and complain that he is pitting Americans against each other. But those complaints are born of a philosophy that rejects the concept of shared responsibility in the first place. That philosophy envisions each of us as separate and isolated units, without obligation to each other or the greater good. It assumes that we are stronger when each of us is selfishly pursuing our own goals without concern for each other or future generations.

I don’t believe that. I don’t believe that this country would have achieved all that it has achieved to date had that philosophy been allowed to determine public policy. As Obama suggested last night, that’s not how we got to where we are; it is not how to get to where we need to be.

If that makes Obama a Marxist, well, then I’m a Marxist too.

“Hey, it’s not impossible, just highly unlikely!”

Adam,

I dunno there pardner. If we started forcing American companies to bring foreign operations plants back here to the U.S. you don’t think foreign governments would retaliate and do the same? That’s a little naive.

Nope. Just a blanket statement and a little piece of rhetoric. Nothing more. Now you can always trot out an article or 2 about a con “not paying the help” but that wouldn’t mean anything. And I believe you know that.

Thulsa Doom: “Capitalism’s an *economic* system, not a ’system of freedom,” whatever that’s supposed to be.”

Wrong. Capitalism is, as Marx claimed, a reproduction of a feudal-type of social relations of domination and servitude in modern form which uses an abstract notion of “rights” and “freedom” by consigning them to the category of the political, and which works because people remain in thrall of commodity fetishism (i.e. they make a fetish out of money and goods, thinking that they have mystical value when they are really just a concrete expression of a social relation).

“Yeah. I know that Joe. We all do. But as an economic system it also requires freedom. Of that I’m sure you will agree.”

Dead wrong.

As I’ve mentioned a few times recently, the emergence of powerhouses of efficiency like China and Singapore which are not liberal democracies is a game-changer here. The marriage between liberal democracy and capitalism is over and there is very good evidence that the template for an even more ruthlessly efficient habitat for capitalism is authoritarianism. Capitalism emerged originally out of protestantism, which itself was a kind of secularized form of Christianity, and what we’re now witnessing is the next step in the process where liberal democracy (a further secularized form of protestantism?) is replaced with something entirely different.

By the way, does throwing in phrases like “as Marx said” in your writing qualify you as a Marxist? :) .

They don’ care about us….they now spend less than 10% of their time on the floor and over 30% of their time raising money at the expense of corrupt policy making…

Jay @ 10:05

Please cite the primary source of your comment that Romney did not pay ordinary income tax on a salary as head of Bain Capital. Your comment is trying to imply the “carried interest ” tax at 15% is illegal. Right or wrong, it is the way the current tax code works. Wait a minute, STOP THE PRESS!!!!! WEALTHY PEOPLE USE SOPHISTICATED TAX STRUCTURES TO GAME THE SYSTEM!!!!! What a shock! GE employs several hundred accountants at Perimeter Center that spend all of their time mitigating the firm’s tax liabiilty. By depreciating equipment, purchasing tax credits (wind energy credits, low income housing credits, new market tax credits, historic tax credits, Ga. film credits, conservation easements, carbon tax credits, etc), GE paid ZERO income taxes last year. Now that’s what I call a fair share. These tax credits can be purchased at a discount to reduce ordinary income tax by anyone with knowledge, income, and tax liability. With the number of new agencies Obama mentioned last night to be funded by tax incentives, even if the 1% is taxed at a minimum of 30%, they will be able to offset that liability with newly tax credit programs. Or, they will simply incorporate the family office to fit the new reduced corporate rate Obama wants.Guess what? You do whatever is cheaper based on which party controls the White House. Why do you think the corporate income tax was created in the first place? So wealthy company owners will have to pay their “fair share”. The juggling between structuring a family office as a corporation versus paying the individual rate has been going on for over 100 years. I did not hear anything radically new last night. Obama wants to penalize multinational companies in a global economy, forgive principal and ease underwriting standards for underwater home owners, and spend more money from the fuzzy math savings from the Iraq war. One point was very clear: Obama offered no specific plans on how to pay for all of this stuff other than raising taxes. With alll the new Government agencies and regulations, the only growth plan in Obamaland is Governent employment.

(ir)Rational: Fascism – a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government

So, you are saying BO is a dictator that controls all of the corporations in this country and these corporation cannot disagree with BO? If so, why doesn’t BO just tax the corporation as he sees fit?

My problem is with the use of marxism, socialism and fascism is that people outright refuse to look of the definition of the word and use it in its proper context.

Or would you prefer to give him an open check book with no accountability? It worked real well for the Energy Department investments into companies like Solyndra.
***********************************************************************************************

Pot calling the kettle black?

You gave George W. Bush an open checkbook to send our sons, daughters, husbands, fathers to war on a lie that there were WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

The only mass destruction was the millions and millions and millions of dollars wasted on a LIE.

You all OWE the DEAD SOLIDERS and their families an apology for opening up the checkbook to George W. Bush.

How dare all of you talk about this president when your hands are dirty and bloody.

Ha, Here something for thought…

The most accountable administration ever: Judicial Watch said the U.S. Air Force provided a C-32 – a Boeing 757 modified by the military for the purpose of flying big-wigs around the world – to fly the First Lady and her entourage to and from Africa , at a cost of $424,142. Another $928.44 was listed as the cost of providing 192 meals for the 21 people who made the trip The Obama daughters were listed on the manifest as “senior staff.”

I can already see the change… LOL… You people need to wake up! This is just one of many reasons to vote these clowns out of office….

What stinks of Marxism is the general idea and push, by the government (and that point is most important) that everyone should do what “everyone”(that being the gov’t again) thinks is best for society. The idea that individuals do not have a right to their own property, (ie should be taxed more because they have it). And for whatever reason, (it doesn’t matter the reason), simply because “we” as Obama puts it, think that it should be used for something else.

From Marx:
“Capital is a collective product, and only by the united action of many members, nay, in the last resort, only by the united action of all members of society, can it be set in motion. ”

Marx’s view on the ownership of capital is only expanded to other parts of society such as education, the family, etc. The growth of government control trends toward Marxism, by definition. Freedom trends the other way.

Freedom is difficult for many to accept. It means ditching the power of the collective and doing things on your own. More frightening than that is the idea of letting other people have that same freedom.

Fire him

George W. Bush spent 8 years lying to America.

His BIGGEST LIE WAS WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

Why didn’t you FIRE HIM.

if we really wanted to get something out of him, we should have simply taken him and interrogated for info then sent him to prison…

If he was no threat, why would we interrogate him for non-existent information?

The embarrassment of cons over Bin Ladin’s killing knows no bounds. I never thought I’d see another purported American poo-poo the elimination of this murderous terrorist. But once again, a con sinks to the occasion.

I suggest you drop SEAL Team Six a note and share your feelings about their meaningless ceremonial mission. Good luck with that.

Let me understand the right. It was a good idea to spend over 2 trillion dollars fighting a war based on a lie, but it was a bad idea to spend 700 billion to save American jobs and industries? That’s some logic.

The “key” word is “Fair”. Please define that word into a percentage of income that people should pay. Our Nation was not made on the assumpation that the government would keep them up. The “pilgrims” tried such an experiment. Their solution was that no one who did not work would not eat!” The polls show that almost 50% of citizens in the Country do not pay any “income taxes”. If Obummer is wanting everyone to have “skin in the game” then everyone should pay at least a dollar in income tax. Fair Tax should then go from that starting point and up.

Fallen: “I am simply pointing out the correlation between a POTUS who is trying to take this country hard left and the impact on economic freedom.” – Well if that’s your opinion then state that but calling the POTUS a Marxist is an improper usage of marxism and is completely opposite of this great democracy. By the way, what economic freedoms have been impacted?

Nope

The funny thing is, all of you right wing extremists are just driving moderates right into the voting booth to pull the lever for Obama. You are even forcing the only candidate who could possibly appeal to moderates — Romney — so far right he will eventually just fall off the political radar.

Wild Eyes – So, I didn’t give you a definition of economic fascism? I mean, I thought I did. I don’t believe I was calling him a fascist, merely an economic fascist. I can see the difference, can you? I never even implied that he was a dictator. But the fact that the government has exercised in the past few years the power to take over companies (GM and Chrysler) and force others to take money they didn’t want and possibly didn’t need (see the statements of several of the large banks after they were forced to take the bailout money) leads me to believe that he is an economic fascist. He wants to control the economy, while pretending to let it continue being a capitalist economy.

To answer your question about him taxing as he sees fit. If he thought there was any precedent that would ever let him get away with that, do you not think he would have already done so? Oddly enough though, there is this thing called the Constitution that doesn’t allow him that power. Crazy.

How come all you nit-picking weinies didn’t go all “You do know that a billionaire would pay more in actual dollars than his secretary” on the President.

Please point out where I called the POTUS a “marxist” I absolutely made no such claim. What I said was “POTUS who is trying to take this country hard left and the impact on economic freedom”.

I think someone else should look before they leap.

As for economic freedoms impacted by Obama, I will start with the easy ones, Obamacare and at least 46 new regulations on private industry that ar estimated to impose at least $100 million worth of compliance costs to the private industry. Big government growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum. There are opportunity costs associated with that growth.

10. unfunded entitlements
