Note: Below is my AJC column for today:
————
Newt Gingrich has never felt fully appreciated, and in some ways I think he has grounds to feel that way. For example, few people give him the credit that he deserves for being a very funny man, even if much of his humor is unintentional.
Just last week, the former speaker led off a debate in South Carolina by complaining about the “destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media,” charging that it “makes it harder to govern this country and harder to attract to decent people to run for public office.”
I thought that was funny.
As history can document, the person most responsible for the nasty, vicious tone of current American politics is Gingrich himself. Those who have dared to advocate policies counter to his own have been dismissed as traitors, pathetic, corrupt and a disgrace. There has been no attack so low that he will not stoop to it; no label so vile that he will not use it. And rather than feel ashamed, he has proudly tried to teach other Republicans to “speak like Newt.” (Even Mitt Romney seems to have picked up on it, calling Gingrich a “failed leader” who “had to resign in disgrace” as speaker).
So please, excuse me if I found Newt’s aggrieved victim act preposterous to the point of being funny. What’s next? Kim Kardashian complaining about vapid, amoral celebrities? Donald Trump lecturing on the dangers of mirror-gazing?
Of course, what some people perceive as absurdist humor, others embrace as heroic truth-telling. Rather than guffaws, the Gingrichian debate rant inspired a standing ovation from the crowd in South Carolina, and a few days later Gingrich pummeled Romney by a stunning 12-point margin, creating a lot of momentum for the contest in Florida next week.
Gingrich has a tendency to compare himself to great figures of the past, so let’s indulge him. It’s been said that at various points in history, a man has matched the moment. Winston Churchill, at one point all but banished from British politics, matched the moment in World War II because his strengths were exactly what his country needed at that time. Martin Luther King Jr. matched the moment during the civil rights struggle of the ’50s and ’60s.
Gingrich has likewise matched the moment in the 2012 Republican primary. Sure, he has many shortcomings in that contest; his troubled personal life would seem to disqualify him as the candidate of a party trumpeting family values. Based on his record, he is no more conservative than Romney, whom he derides as a Massachusetts moderate. And he is the ultimate D.C. insider of a type that the Tea Party faction claims to reject.
However, his stock in trade has long been the expression of scorn, disdain and resentment. That’s what he does best; it flows out of him as smoothly and sincerely as love talk from a barroom Romeo. And in the Republican electorate in the Age of Obama, he has found an audience ready to swoon when they hear that rhetoric.
Like a barroom Romeo, however, Gingrich is not the type you want to hitch yourself to permanently. As others will attest, you’ll come to regret it. Nationwide, he’s viewed favorably by just 27 percent of the American people, which means that outside the Republican base, he has almost no support whatsoever. In addition, because he’s been in the national spotlight since the early ’90s, it’s an electorate that knows him well. Its attitude toward him is not likely to change.
If Republicans make him their nominee, the joke’s on them.

Gingrich whined that CNN was being “disgraceful” for questioning him about what his second wife said about him wanting an “open marriage”. Of course, that episode in Newt’s life happened after he had been cheating on his second wife for SIX YEARS with his now-third wife.
But that part’s not disgraceful to Newt.
Nope.
Because he loves this country so much.

The columnist doth protest too much, methinks. Jay, what percentage of your columns in the past 3 months are diatribes against Gingrich. I mean, your personal animus for him is striking. He’s not my first choice for the GOP nomination, and he would probably lose versus Obama, but I have little doubt he would make the president look bad in their debates. It cannot be denied that he is a skilled tactical debater with a strong command of the facts and a quick mind. Obama has fine oratorical skills, but that will only serve him well in speeches – not debates.

“Language: A Key Mechanism of Control” Newt Gingrich’s 1996 GOPAC memo: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4443.htm
“As you know, one of the key points in the GOPAC tapes is that ‘language matters.’ In the video ‘We are a Majority,’ Language is listed as a key mechanism of control used by a majority party, along with Agenda, Rules, Attitude and Learning. As the tapes have been used in training sessions across the country and mailed to candidates we have heard a plaintive plea: ‘I wish I could speak like Newt.‘
That takes years of practice. But, we believe that you could have a significant impact on your campaign and the way you communicate if we help a little. That is why we have created this list of words and phrases.
This list is prepared so that you might have a directory of words to use in writing literature and mail, in preparing speeches, and in producing electronic media. The words and phrases are powerful. Read them. Memorize as many as possible. And remember that like any tool, these words will not help if they are not used.”

My favorite Newt = Hypocrite story is his reaction to the tragedy of Sharon Smith, the confused mother from South Carolina who drowned her your children because her boyfriend didn’t like kids. She blamed a “black guy” — the cops investigated and said that she killed them herself.
Newt stepped in and said that this was evidence of a liberals meddling in social policy and laid the blame on “liberalism.” In South Carolina – really?
And then while confessing, Sharon Smith explained that she had been sexually abused as a child by her father; who then admitted to the sexual abuse. Wait for it….her father was a honcho in the local GOP party. Still waiting for Newt to retract his statement that this tragedy was caused by liberals.
Funny how no one in the GOP ever condemned Newt’s remarks….funny, but entirely predictable.

Like the time the Democrats were utterly silent over the misdeeds of Rep. Wiener of New York, refusing to condemn him and supporting him all along the way, ultimately allowing him to survive the bad publicity and retain his position.
This is of course much in contrast to the sad fate of Rep. Vitter of Louisiana, for ex.

I love how all of you sheep have found your shepards, either President Obama and his wealth envy, fair share tactics or Congressman Gingrich and his socialist, commie crap. The reason they attack the other side is both parties are out of ideas. The Democrates 50 year old massive “War on Poverty ” is a failure, the Republican 40 year massive “War on Drugs” is beyond a waste of money. Medicare, Medicade, Social Security, Post Office, HUD, Education, Health Care, Labor, name one of these things that the Federal Government has succeeded at, if the Government was a “hated” corporation it would be “too big a failure to save”. So the people that have been running this train over a cliff, have to distract the sheep with attacks on the other guys, because they can not stand on their sucesses. My company is doing just as badly today as it was 3 years ago. Possibly worse. Business picked up for a couple of months, but has stagnated and the work that came in a few months ago has finished and now we’re back to hoping we have enough billable hours at the end of the month to make enough to pay our bills here in the office. But I guess that just means I either don’t have a college education, according to ByteMe, or am out of touch with reality as getalife says. My reality is that I’m still, and have been for a few years, one paycheck away from being financially ruined. And one client not paying their bill away from missing that one paycheck. Oh, and as far as the education level as a predictor of unemployment, yeah I’ll buy that, but it sucks to find out that your degree has the highest unemployment rates of any college grads. Gives the boss great leverage in knowing that you have nowhere to go, and that he doesn’t have to give you a raise or benefits of any kind to stay.

Now Johnny, why do you think that would be true??
Your reply would likely be on Obama’s 2008 win. He won because so many in the so called Middle voted for him.
No, my reply is based in stats. 26% to the left, 24% to the right, the rest feel they’re in the squishy middle and looking for someone who represents what they want, which is everything for nothing.

Perhaps if your knowledge of history covered more than the last few years you’d recall that Newt practically invented attack politics in 1996.
You are giving Newt way to much credit. Did you not pay attention to your history classes in HS? Attack politics has been going on since the beginning of this country. I might add that the current version is a lot more mild then in the past. Go back and look at some of the political cartoons of Lincoln or some of the opinion pieces about Andrew Jackson.

Keep – As far as I’m concerned, the recession has been an okay thing simply because it shut down a lot of the builders that were turning out crap. Thing is though, good, reliable contractors and home builders don’t typically compete with developers for the same jobs. They’re in two completely different markets. There have always been, and I’m sure always will be bad contractors that are able to hide shoddy work, but that is just the way things happen. The problem isn’t specific to contractors, but expands to all sectors of the economy. I would guess that bad doctors probably have a hard time hiding the fact that they’re bad though. I was just pointing out that there will be plenty of work for people like me in a few years when these houses that were put up in just a few months start falling down around their owner’s ears.

As history can document, the person most responsible for the nasty, vicious tone of current American politics is Gingrich himself.
I agree with most of your comments other than the one above. The statement is strictly an opinion and can’t be documenting as being true by history. Like who is the greatest quarterback in the NFL it is matter of opinion.
I remember seeing the add Lyndon Johnson ran against Barry Goldwater depicting the mushroom cloud. It was the Democrats who were the first to start beating up in Supreme Court nominations. Just look at the votes for Supreme court nominees up to the point of Nixon and look afterwards. Vicisious attacks were going on long before Newt was in office.
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/reference/nominations/Nominations.htm
What makes Newt bad is that he claims he is trying to take the moral high ground while at the same time he is as negative as anyone.
In general the correlation between what politicians does and what they say is lower than for most people. Their profession requires them to say things that people want to hear but when they actually take action sometimes the consequences dictate a different action than what was promised, sometimes the action is impossible to implement and sometimes they have made conflicting promises.
Even though I find Newts words and deeds to correlate less than other politicians, however, to say the person most responsible for the nasty, vicious tone of current politics is Newt is simply as ridiculous as Newt himself.

He says he’s for all energy, but axed the pipeline.
He said no to a project that did not have a fully complete plan, because several stakeholders expressed concern over the route. So they scrapped the route and started looking for a new one. They didn’t present a new route yet, and after they do, the process of making sure there are no problems with that route takes more time than 60 days. Trying to force a decision on an incomplete plan is NOT SMART. And it further proves Republicans don’t know how to run a business.
And btw, if you’re the Governor of Nebraska and you say no to the specific route, you cannot then go “But whatever you come up with that’s not the thing I objected to is TOTALLY fine with me.” Blanket pre-approvals without knowing the details is also not smart.

This is true. He didn’t “cause” it, but was the last person to touch the hot potato.
The cause has a 10-12 year history and starts with the repeal of Glass-Steagal and flows through a lack of SEC enforcement of gambling limits by investment banks and rating agencies that took money to give a high rating to crap investments that then got resold to unsuspecting investors all over the world.

If you start with the infrastructure to support the long-haul truckers, you get the infrastructure pieces in place without needing the huge supply to flow all at once, like it would need to be for cars. Then you can move to the next phase and do a NG/electrical hybrid car.

Nationwide, he’s viewed favorably by just 27 percent of the American people, which means that outside the Republican base, he has almost no support whatsoever.
Paul and I have a long running joke that 20% or so will believe anything. In this case that Newt is not repugnant to the point of nausea.
The other highly salient fact?
He was disgraced out of office BY HIS OWN PARTY.
Maybe he needs to cheat on the adulteress Callista. His favorable numbers would likely go up with the twisted family values crowd in the Party of No…

Believe that at your own peril. The controls are still not in place to prevent them from doing it again. Example: if Europe goes over a cliff, who holds the counter-party derivatives on it? We won’t know until a bank or two go bankrupt and leaves us holding the bag, because derivatives are not publicly traded instruments, so there’s no record except between the parties on both sides of the derivative.

Global governments are reforming so they will not follow Wall Street off the cliff again.
Again, believe that at your own peril. Most of Europe is technically bankrupt, but they’re hoping for time to figure out how to get out of the mess. Here’s how it works: the government “guarantees” the bank deposits, because that’s how it’s done everywhere. But the government has a huge debt and structural deficits, so they can’t pay in case the banks go bankrupt. And who owns most of the government debt? The banks! (Thank you, thank you, I’m here every night and twice on Sunday.)
The only “easy” way out of this mess is to “print money” to pay down those debts. Except that Euro-land countries can’t print money.
The number they need is somewhere north of 2 trillion euros to get out of the mess.
They don’t have their stuff together at all. And we might be counter-party to some of the sovereign debt (word is that JPM/Chase is a big offender in this area).

It would REALLY help if you looked at which policies carried over from previous admins. The fact is over 75% (and that’s being generous) of our current debt was created by Republican policies and continuing the spending of those policies. Most of it from war and tax cuts and unfunded other things.
Republicans talk big about the deficit all the time, but when they get in office and don’t have a check on their power, they blow it up. Gingrich voted AGAINST the Clinton budgets, and he voted FOR new spending…. A LOT. Thing is, Clinton used his bully pulpit effectively to get a budget in the black when the country was doing well – which is exactly when you SHOULD cut spending and taxes. You don’t INCREASE spending just because the country is doing well, you have to cut spending when the country is doing well, so the deficit can go down. And you should only cut taxes if you don’t need the revenue, which is impossible as long as there is a deficit or interest to pay on the deficit.

Remember Pres John Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. I am a 60+ yr old retired Vietnam vet who happens to be an Independent. Think about this fact -, 35% Democrats, 25% Republicans and 40% Independents. We will decide this election, not based on skin color but who has the best chance to turn the economy around and create jobs( not govt but private sector jobs). Obama has had 3+ yrs and we are worst off now than when he took office, unless you want the govt to take care of you!

mm – “That lie, in a nutshell, is the belief that drives republican voters.”
This class warfare/greed routine is the entire foundation of the democrats platform in this election cycle. It’s the only issue they’re discussing, the only one that has them energized, the only one they seem to care about. If you want to pretend that isn’t the case, go right ahead.
When is Obama going to actually propose legislation to increase the capital gains tax rate instead of just stirring his sheep about it? I’ll guarantee it won’t be before the first Tuesday in November. Won’t stop him from including it in every campaign speach/state of the union speach, though, because it works on tools who don’t pay attention to the fact it’s just noisy rhetoric.

You do realize that at this time in 79 Carter was ahead of Reagan by 15 points and Kerry was ahead of GWB by 17 points?
Polls at this time mean little to nothing. The are way to many variables that can happen in the next 10 months and less then 20% of the population is even paying attention right now.
Let us say Newt is the nominee and next October unemployment is still over 8% and gas prices (as predicted) is over $4 per gallon. Do you really think Obama would still be ahead of Newt in the polls? I would predict that Obama would lose 40 states if the above came to be true. This is the same type thing that happened to McCain when the banks starting failing in 08. He was up by 5 points on Obama.

In summary, Newt is not very intelligent. In fact a very strong case can be made, that by his own words, he is pretty much an intellectual lightweight.
But he disguises it well with bombastic, substance-free rhetoric, rancor and name calling and the programmed Republirubes lap it up
This has been his meat and potatoes style since the 1980s, and he was run out of town for doing so the first time.
He will never get a second chance.
But dear gawd I love the sheer desperation of watching these so-called conservatives, in election after election now, try to nominate either knuckle-dragging twits by the droves or their detested RINOs.
Good times in Loserville…

Occupation asks: What does ‘technically bankrupt’ mean? Guess you better get Brussels on the phone and let them know, this ‘info’ of yours might have some bearing on their plans.
It means that if you apply the rules to the banks, the banks all fail, which the governments don’t have the money to bail them out, so the governments go bankrupt as well. Think of it this way: Greece has a huge unpayable debt and that debt is primarily owned by European banks. When Greece fails, those banks fail, the governments “guaranteeing” the deposits at those banks won’t be able to print money to cover the failure, so those countries will have bank runs, and so on.
And, yes, Brussels already knows, they’ve been having meeting after meeting for the past year looking for a way out of this mess.

Ole Eye of Newt Gingrich is a race baiter.. Gingrich rile up the primitive emotional passions of the naive and the ignorant. He stir up the fears and hate of people who seek to deflect, scapegoat, blame others, project and deny. Bush/Cheney were race baiters too, “compassionate conservatism”, and a unemployment rate for African-Americans that skyrocketed from 5% in January of 2001 up to 17% by the end of 2001. Reagan was a race baiter. Reagan sent out dog whistle signals by kicking off his 1980 Presidential campaign in the Mississippi town where the three civil rights workers (warner, Goodman and Chaney) were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan county sheriff dept.. Reagan called poor welfare recipients “Welfare Queens.” Tricky Dick Nixon used the “southern strategy” race baiting technique. Republicans = the more things change, the more they stay the same. Republican politicians = racist lap dogs of the rich and elite. Cutthroat vulture capitalists, who practice a vitriolic form of classism.
