Buffett’s secretary at Obama’s State of the Union

Based on this report from Politico, I think we have a pretty good idea where President Obama intends to go in his State of the Union speech this evening:

Billionaire Warren Buffett’s longtime secretary will be joining first lady Michelle Obama in her box at tonight’s State of the Union, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer announced on Twitter. Debbie Bosanek, who has worked for Buffett for nearly two decades, has become a symbol in the White House’s fight over the tax code and economic fairness.

A nice touch, I think.

You also have to question the wisdom of the Romney campaign in deciding to release his tax returns today, setting the scene very nicely for what Obama apparently wants to talk about tonight.

Obama will give a speech stressing fairly taxing the rich as well as the middle-class and the poor. The Democrates will applaud. The Republicans will accuse him of unfairly taxing the “job creators” and class warfare. The Republican electorate sheep will all applaud as their Party endevors to grind them under even more.

I’m not sure a day or two either way would make much difference. Release them after today and it’s still close enough that it would be used for comparisons. Release later and Newt keeps his issue. Now the issue’s Newt’s Freddie contract and release of the House investigation records. That’ll play well within the Republican primary circle. The other’s a broader issue for the general campaign.

But it is good for the Pres to put a face to the idea. I’ll be interested to see just how far he’s willing to go on raising taxes for individuals. All, or some income groups? Individuals only, or funds, also? Will he call for an end to treating what’s essentially earned income by fund managers – hedge and others – as cap gains and convert that to ordinary income rates?

But it seems to me, coming out on the side of breaks for the wealthy in a time of continuing hardship is not the best side to be on, Republican opposition. I’d look for compromise positions.

Unbeknownst to the Republicans, Obama hired Mitt to run for GOP nominee knowing that other Republican contenders would have no choice but to pounce on him for paying a lower tax than he does. I must say the plan is unfolding as expected but there is more to come. Stayed tuned.

And to demonstrate the amazing powers of denial:

We’re headed for trickly up poverty, folks.

Headed?

Headed???

Take a look around at the results of the past four decades.

MASSIVE unemployment, foreclosures, bankruptcies, homelessness – even for veterans – growing poverty and hunger and desperation by millions that the future is going to be no better. Not just jobs, but entire industries rewarded by politicians to send their operations overseas.

Flat-lined wages for 80% of ALL Americans. FOR FORTY YEARS.

A minimum wage that has not even kept up with inflation since 1968!

Labor unions decimated by plutocrats and their enablers.

Families in the ungodly numbers who can no longer afford health insurance, college educations or even a decent vacation.

Corporate criminality and welfare that is so gargantuan – in the hundreds of billions of dollars annually – that white collar criminals are now completely imperious and untouchable.

Too big to fail. Sham capitalism. Socialism for BIG business. Banksters.

This is the new USA.

And you delusionists either deny or discount every one of these realities because they do not fit in very nicely with your trickle down mythology that Saint Ronnie duped you with long ago.

However will he actually have any specifics? Like a rate he is proposing, or will that have to wait til after the election?

Will he also call for an increase to every groups taxes or only the wealthy, as even taxing the “1%” at 100% would not get us out of the mess we haqve made for ourselves?

If he he does call for an overall raise at what percentage?

“Considering the top 10% income earners in the US own 80% of the wealth,”

Traditionally we tax income- not wealth. The wealthy initially paid taxes on earned income and then took what was left to build wealth. And they do pay taxes on that accumulated wealth in the way of property taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes, etc.

I’m not sure what liberals want. Do you want to just tax away everything someone has accumulated when they hit a certain plateau? Kinda even things out like Obama told Joe the plummer? Serious question. What exactly do liberals feel the wealthy should pay?

Talking Head: Somehow raising taxes on those who already pay over half of all income taxes will bring us back to economic glory days

I did not realize Obama had a tax plan that involves raising taxes on everyone over the poverty line.

Or maybe you can go kill a congressman’s cat and write “LIBERAL” across it in its blood. Then your friends can claim it was only an “isolated incident” for the umpteenth time similar incidents have happened.

Adam, you’re right, that’s pretty sick. (more info here if this is news to you.)

The question is, who would ever feed people such sick ideas? oh, wait…
