UPDATE: That was an impressive win. A 14-point margin for Newt Gingrich is probably more than the former speaker could dream of a week ago, and certainly was unimagined by the Romney camp. A lot of Republican Party officials will not sleep well tonight.
The voting booths close at 7 p.m. in South Carolina, and given movement in the most recent polls, it wouldn’t be surprising if the networks name Newt Gingrich the winner shortly thereafter.
If that happens — and particularly if Gingrich can push his margin into double digits, which seems plausible — the Republicans have themselves a serious problem. Newt will come out of South Carolina with the smell of napalm in his nostrils, and we all know what napalm smells like: victory.

The greater the Gingrich margin, the more it will validate his strategy of attacking Mitt Romney on the issue of his Bain-gotten wealth. As his high-school yearbook photo tells you, this is a man with a grandiose sense of destiny, and the closer he gets to seeing it realized, the more aggressive he will become.
And as I’ve pointed out before, the Republican establishment will have only itself to blame. They have trained their base to turn up its nose at even the slightest aroma of moderation. They have fed it on resentment, and instilled it with a deep disdain for the media. In short, they have turned it into an audience utterly susceptibel to a man of Newt’s talents and eccentricities.
On the other hand, if Romney wins, this thing’s all but over. We’ll know in a few hours.

Fascinating! I gave it a quick scan and have saved it…this is one I’ll come back to and give some attention to. Thanks.
Like a lot of gay people, I’m alternately amused and ticked off by what so many have fixed in their minds about what gay people “look like.” I have a friend we’ll call straight who says that the reason so many say that they don’t care what we do “in private” just don’t bring it up in public is because it disturbs them when somebody who looks and acts just like them, i.e. can’t be “identified” turns out to be gay, it challenges their own “look.”
Unmentionable is the archtypical easy going and relaxed “masculine” male and has spent a lifetime dealing with that. He, well at least when we were younger, was always getting hit on by “straight” men because, well, it can’t be homosexual if he ain’t “faggy!”

Hi josef, couldn’t agree more.
“I have a friend we’ll call straight who says that the reason so many say that they don’t care what we do “in private” just don’t bring it up in public is because it disturbs them when somebody who looks and acts just like them, i.e. can’t be “identified” turns out to be gay, it challenges their own “look”. ”
One of the things I think is so important about a progressive politics is to remember that people are willing go a long way towards ‘tolerance’ if it’s defined in a balkanized environment where boundaries are simply re-drawn (gerrymandered if you will) where you easily to give them their space, but in the end that kind of ‘tolerance’ is phony.
In other words maybe the most threatening thing to the bigot is not so much the ‘other’, but the fact that we can never really be sure we know the same the way we think we do or want to think we can.

Welcome, 6:41,
You are mind fu*king this to death in the typical liberal way. The majority of America is not tolerant much of anything that has to do with a “gay lifestyle”. Quite frankly, it is none of their business, I will grant you that. People can live any way they want as long as they are not breaking any laws…. but tolerant? I think not. Prop 8 in the most vibrant gay community in the whole country voted to define marriage being between a man and a woman. The California electorate passed it. They have voted in a “progressive” way for decades yet this issue struck a chord with them, as it has with the the majority of Americans. I have no problem with people of the same sex living together and sharing a life together….. it is simply none of my business what they do. I do have a problem calling it marriage however.

An interesting thing about being able “to pass” is often how much you learn about what people really think when they assume they’re among their “own kind.” Sure, you hear a lot of negative things, but in my experience I have been often pleased to find out just how many people will defend the “other” when that other has been maligned. It’s one of the reasons I am such an incurable optimist.

That said, yak, it all hangs on why the insistence on drawing a line at gay marriage.
If it’s for purposes of shoring up traditional marriage — as it almost always is — it will fail.
Better to abolish marriage altogether — and we may be moving in that direction anyway.
On the other hand, I disagree with some liberals to the extent that they think our understanding of traditional marriage can be preserved wholesale for gay marriage without it undergoing decisive changes in the process.

welcome- do you really think that Barack Obama is a “marxist”?
Obama himself acknowledges that he was drawn to socialists and even Marxists as a college student. He continued to associate with Marxists later in life, even choosing to launch his political career in the living room of a self-described Marxist, William Ayers, in 1995, when Obama was 34.
“To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully,” Obama wrote in his memoir, “Dreams From My Father.” “The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists.”
After college, Obama states lived on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, venturing to the East Village for what he called “the socialist conferences I sometimes attended at Cooper Union.”
Never read any of his books, but I’ll take his word for it since he wrote it.

Anything’s possible. However, it’s hard for me to believe that Mitt will continue stumbling as he’s done the past couple of weeks (obviously, if he loses FL, he’s in pretty serious doo-doo.)
As for Newt beating Obama in a general? Newt is pretty well known by the public. He’s polled horribly in head-to-head matchups. Absent Obama being caught in bed with a dead boy, it’s hard to imagine Newt beating him.

Regardless to who believes in what, they are all Americans at the end of the day, and they are simply expressing their right to free speech. If you don’t like that, then maybe you need to re-check your “American” values.

naw the surge happened after Newt battled Juan W.
I’m not saying that hurt, Buckeye, but I think people are keying in and agreeing with his core message about self-sufficiency.

We need a definitive decision from the Supreme Court on the Constitutional meaning of “natural born citizen” so we don’t have these problesm in the future. Do you have a problem with that ?
JFK, whose father I think was an immigrant, was president and I can’t find any legal challenges to his presidency. Why now? Why THIS president? And I do have a problem with it.

wager about Obama’s reelection?
Obama’s odds of winning reelection are about the same as those of a librul stepping outside and being shat upon on by an eagle, a crow, and a woodpecker all in the same day.

The only explanation I’ve been able to come up with for what happened in SC, and I’m serious as a heart attack here, is mass hysteria. And the more I listen to the victory chants, the more I believe that. We’ve got folks coming in having turned their backs on the very principles they have so long so vociferously defended. It’s really quite scary…

Bruno- Obama’s message of victimhood, dependency, and class warfare isn’t working anymore.
Keep disagrees with you. That means it;s obviously still working (especially with union members, lower income families and minorities).

Nice try, Bruno. But there are a couple of logic problems with that argument.
First, Newt wasn’t running against Obama in the primary. He was running against Mitt. Something gave Newt a considerable advantage over Mitt in South Carolina, and it couldn’t have been the message you just cited.
Because Mitt is making the same argument.
Perhaps if you read a transcript of the debate, you would see many similarities between Newt’s and Mitt’s pitch. And, if you ONLY had a written transcript, then your “logical” complaints would be valid.
But, if you recall, the message we receive when we see and hear someone speak is estimated to be 95% emotional and only 5% factual in terms of impact. Mitt is giving the appearance of a man on the run, with both his offense and defense breaking down simultaneously. Meanwhile, Newt openly challenges to a debate in which Obama can keep his teleprompter, Newt will just rely on his intellect. In the end, only one candidate can carry the message to the voters. I, along with 40% of SC, believe that man should be Newt.

what really ticked me off about that whole exchange is the millions of black people that newtered dissed. he acts like 99% of black people:
a) don’t want to work.
b) are on welfare.
c) are lazy.
i hope one day his fat azz is laying up in the emergency room and his black doctor suddenly gets a case of “lazy” and forgets how to work.

I dunno Debbie. He managed to diss a lot of white people too seeing as how there are more whites on welfare than blacks- 38% to 37% with Hispanics 20% of the welfare roles.

Except for the part about breaking the law and being a drain on the tax payers. I thought you were against criminals, or is that job security?
