A big Gingrich win would be GOP nightmare

UPDATE: That was an impressive win. A 14-point margin for Newt Gingrich is probably more than the former speaker could dream of a week ago, and certainly was unimagined by the Romney camp. A lot of Republican Party officials will not sleep well tonight.

The voting booths close at 7 p.m. in South Carolina, and given movement in the most recent polls, it wouldn’t be surprising if the networks name Newt Gingrich the winner shortly thereafter.

If that happens — and particularly if Gingrich can push his margin into double digits, which seems plausible — the Republicans have themselves a serious problem. Newt will come out of South Carolina with the smell of napalm in his nostrils, and we all know what napalm smells like: victory.

072122_Gingrich_layout-1

The greater the Gingrich margin, the more it will validate his strategy of attacking Mitt Romney on the issue of his Bain-gotten wealth. As his high-school yearbook photo tells you, this is a man with a grandiose sense of destiny, and the closer he gets to seeing it realized, the more aggressive he will become.

And as I’ve pointed out before, the Republican establishment will have only itself to blame. They have trained their base to turn up its nose at even the slightest aroma of moderation. They have fed it on resentment, and instilled it with a deep disdain for the media. In short, they have turned it into an audience utterly susceptibel to a man of Newt’s talents and eccentricities.

On the other hand, if Romney wins, this thing’s all but over. We’ll know in a few hours.

I’m betting that Obama, like every other black kid in america, knows how to play the dozens. He might be a little rusty, growing up in Hawaii and all, but since he spent some time on Chicago’s southside, he’s had some practice.

Trying to speculate on events of the past and how outcomes might have differed is a nice parlor game, the reality is that we only have two speeds; right now and tomorrow. Thanks to the EPA, we haven’t built a new refinery in the US for over 30 years. We actually have to import gas instead of crude as we no longer have the ability to produce our own.

http://www.adn.com/2011/12/30/2239859/fuel-leading-us-export-for-first.html

NEW YORK — For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world’s biggest gas guzzler, is — wait for it — fuel.

Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels.

Just how big of a shift is this? A decade ago, fuel wasn’t even among the top 25 exports. And for the last five years, America’s top export was aircraft.

The trend is significant because for decades the U.S. has relied on huge imports of fuel from Europe to meet demand. It only reinforced the image of America as an energy hog. And up until a few years ago, whenever gasoline prices climbed, there were complaints in Congress that U.S. refiners were not growing quickly enough to satisfy domestic demand; that controversy appears to be over.

Still, the U.S. is nowhere close to energy independence. America is still the world’s largest importer of crude oil. From January to October, the country imported 2.7 billion barrels of oil worth roughly $280 billion.

Cursory Google search of Top US export 2011 would have found you any number of links to show what I stated. We still import boatloads of crude, but with the demand for gas dropping domestically, oil companies are selling their products worldwide to the highest bidder. It has nothing to do with the EPA or the Dept of Energy. I imagine that the Dept of Commerce would be more at play in this one.

josef, you have made the accurate assessment repeatedly that BHO is mediocre. Nothing worse or better than that.

As for the made up nonsense that the nitwits here who endlessly blubber on about him being the worst ever, I would wager the following.

Every single one of those reality averse radicals voted for George of the Bungle. Twice.

I’d also submit that every single one of them essentially licked his boots for that entire eight year reign of error. And said not the FIRST word about his stunning lack of respect for the United States Constitution and the rule of law (ask the ABA about his serial violations) and the unmatched death and destruction he caused. By every measure and every metric he sucked almost beyond comparison.

And outside of the lunatic fringe this is barely debatable.

Now the more brave of them, years on down the road, of course, timidly agree that he wasn’t the best president. Huge LOL. Like it wasn’t patently obvious 100 days into his first term that he was a bungling sell-out boob???

The result? ALL of this BS about BHO being godawful is simply trying to deflect away from THEIR responsibility for actually electing arguably the worst ever.

Now at least the people of South Carolina desperately want another immoral idiot in the West Wing.

The historian Alan Gallay has estimated that between 1670 and 1715 English slavers in the South sold somewhere between thirty and fifty thousand native people. So many were exported to New England that most colonies there tried to ban or restrict the trade.

Most slaves were prisoners of war, seized in intertribal conflicts and sold by enemy Indian groups to the English in exchanges for guns, pots and axes.”

The Newt victory – and especially the surprising margin – is good for conservatism, not so good for moderate republicans. Newt ran hard as “the conservative,” and Romney ran as a – well, exactly what did he run as? Conservatives want to vote for one who magnifies conservatism.

Romney had a couple of good arguments recently, in defense of capitalism generally, although he was using the argument as straw man to deflect inquiry about his income, about his efforts at Bain Capital generally. But Newt won the SC election with his sound bites at the last two debates, particularly his response to the Juan Williams question.

I think our leftist friends delude themselves with the faux-glee at the thought of President Present debating the Newtmeister. Minds not damaged by drugs will recall that even the wishy-washy McCain out-debated Chauncey at each occasion, and Newt’s intellect will destroy the Oval Office Occupier by merely reciting the record of the past three years. Will be ugly, but of course the past three years have been ugly.

Just because Americans are supposed to have such high moral standards does NOT mean that we can’t arrest and/or detain someone because they didn’t do anything.

Heck, look at Double U and Cheney — they did it all the time. And it made our country safe from ARABS in America. It didn’t however make us safe from Arabs abroad, but we’re gonna keep that little tidbit to ourselves.

A Toking I will go.

Well, howdy everybody. I hope you enjoyed Sunday a.m. services as much as I did. The Rev. Postlewaite was on fire today. Seeing as how old Newt won in SC, his sermon was on the Prodigious Son, about how you could sin and sin and sin but if you Repented and asked for forgiveness everything would be OK. I guess I’ll take his word for it, seeing as how old Newt has a R after his name. It might could be a different story if he was a D. Me, I ain’t never forgetting Clinton and that intern and how he flat-out ruint the morals of a whole generation of kids.

Anyhow, football is coming up and it’s a great day. Got my fried pork skins, got my PBR, and I’m ready to see some people whale the tar out of each other. In a Christian spirit, of course.

Have a great Sabbath everybody.

” Newt’s intellect will destroy the Oval Office Occupier…”

Newt’s “intellect” will destroy Western Civilization…the Oval Office Occupier is small potatoes…

Dear Josef @ 12:51, good morning, “Newt’s “intellect” will destroy Western Civilization” and we will call it “American Spring.”

Ragnar,
McCain NEVER won a debate with Obama..LOL Joe Scarborugh(sp?) and Tom Coburn to name a couple of Republicans, helped throw Newt out of Congress. This is the guy you think can win it all.

Could be different if he was lying to congress about it. While he was just as morally wrong, Newt didn’t get disbarred over his affairs.

JKL2, “And we’d been hearing that the Sudanese wanted America to start dealing with them again. They released him. At the time, 1996, he had committed no crime against America, so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him … ”

But JK, what are you saying were the options given that 9/11 had not happened yet?

Should we have already had a Guantanamo in place then to put someone like an OBL?

I don’t recall the two of them actually ever engaging in a debate. Winners of those media infomercials do not qualify as debate winners in any true sense of the word debate.
