A big Gingrich win would be GOP nightmare

UPDATE: That was an impressive win. A 14-point margin for Newt Gingrich is probably more than the former speaker could dream of a week ago, and certainly was unimagined by the Romney camp. A lot of Republican Party officials will not sleep well tonight.

The voting booths close at 7 p.m. in South Carolina, and given movement in the most recent polls, it wouldn’t be surprising if the networks name Newt Gingrich the winner shortly thereafter.

If that happens — and particularly if Gingrich can push his margin into double digits, which seems plausible — the Republicans have themselves a serious problem. Newt will come out of South Carolina with the smell of napalm in his nostrils, and we all know what napalm smells like: victory.

072122_Gingrich_layout-1

The greater the Gingrich margin, the more it will validate his strategy of attacking Mitt Romney on the issue of his Bain-gotten wealth. As his high-school yearbook photo tells you, this is a man with a grandiose sense of destiny, and the closer he gets to seeing it realized, the more aggressive he will become.

And as I’ve pointed out before, the Republican establishment will have only itself to blame. They have trained their base to turn up its nose at even the slightest aroma of moderation. They have fed it on resentment, and instilled it with a deep disdain for the media. In short, they have turned it into an audience utterly susceptibel to a man of Newt’s talents and eccentricities.

On the other hand, if Romney wins, this thing’s all but over. We’ll know in a few hours.

In case any of you missed it, Russian scientists believe they have uncovered evidence of life on Venus:

http://news.yahoo.com/russian-scientist-claims-signs-life-spotted-venus-070321311.html

From the article:

“The project is largely dedicated to analyzing what its leaders describe as a “greenhouse effect”-related eco-catastrophe that once converted Venus into an uninhabitable wasteland. New evidence suggests that right-wing Venetians lawmakers ignored strong warnings from the Venus Progressive Party regarding space saucer emissions nearly 3 million years ago, thus dooming the once robust planet. The decline was greatly accelerated by the election of Newtonian Gingrichius, who defeated the first green-skinned Venetian President, Barackus Obamian in a race-fueled election.”

If that is indeed how people on the Right see things, why in the hell are they trying to replace one nightmare (Obama) with the nightmare of all nightmares (Gingrich)? Why would a group of people who proclaim to love their country attempt to completely f**k said country up?

See, there’s your problem–you seem to care about how people on the Right see things.

I think in 2012 they’ve established themselves as the most irrational, emotion-driven voting bloc out there, and if they want to commit electoral suicide let ‘em.

True, but the South typically marches to the same drumbeat. I don’t see any reason to think that any other Southern primary would turn out any different. In the same line of thought, the way the South goes, so does the GOP in most cases.

But Gingrich strains the facts when he accuses Obama of being responsible.

if he didn’t strain the facts, he wouldn’t have any facts at all.

One would think that Mitt merely pointing out that Speaker Heap-Big-Idea-Man couldn’t even get his fat ass on the damn Virginia ballot would be enough of a slam to keep even slightly rational GOP primary voters from supporting Newt, but who knows.

Maybe there aren’t enough slightly rational GOP primary voters to matter.

Saw a Fox exit poll of those who were undecides right up ’till the end. In the same proportion as Newt’s victory, they rated true conservatism ahead of the economy and the other question had to do with could they vote for someone of that religion.

For the sake of the party, I hope that’s not representative. But then again, it’s their bed to make -

I keep saying that Gingrich is a fighter. Those of us in Georgia know this. Sure, he can be arrogant and hypocritical as far as I am concerned. He has baggage, but he fights as hard as anyone.

However, I heard someone say it best over on a radio program. They said that that the South Carolina debates, especially the one where Juan Williams was attacked, were two steps from a klan rally. (I wonder how many in South Carolina are happy.) Santorum tried a northern version of a southern strategy in Iowa. (Look at the applause he received from the crowd.) Gingrich tried it in South Carolina. I suspect that Gingrich will benefit more from it than Santorum.

I hope that my state will show some decency that we are known to have but am not holding my breath.

Thank God for Florida, he will not win there, because there are not a bunch of hypocrites bible thumping red necks there. He will win Georgia because you have the same breed of conservertive hypocrites, they hate the President who has family values. morales because of his skin color.
He will not win out west or up north, the south beside Florida, continue to be a joke because of these hypocrite white conservative christians who have no morales or values when it comes to white candidates but yet claim they love Jessus, and point the family at other people faith.
