A big Gingrich win would be GOP nightmare

UPDATE: That was an impressive win. A 14-point margin for Newt Gingrich is probably more than the former speaker could dream of a week ago, and certainly was unimagined by the Romney camp. A lot of Republican Party officials will not sleep well tonight.

The voting booths close at 7 p.m. in South Carolina, and given movement in the most recent polls, it wouldn’t be surprising if the networks name Newt Gingrich the winner shortly thereafter.

If that happens — and particularly if Gingrich can push his margin into double digits, which seems plausible — the Republicans have themselves a serious problem. Newt will come out of South Carolina with the smell of napalm in his nostrils, and we all know what napalm smells like: victory.

072122_Gingrich_layout-1

The greater the Gingrich margin, the more it will validate his strategy of attacking Mitt Romney on the issue of his Bain-gotten wealth. As his high-school yearbook photo tells you, this is a man with a grandiose sense of destiny, and the closer he gets to seeing it realized, the more aggressive he will become.

And as I’ve pointed out before, the Republican establishment will have only itself to blame. They have trained their base to turn up its nose at even the slightest aroma of moderation. They have fed it on resentment, and instilled it with a deep disdain for the media. In short, they have turned it into an audience utterly susceptibel to a man of Newt’s talents and eccentricities.

On the other hand, if Romney wins, this thing’s all but over. We’ll know in a few hours.

Is that why obama has extended the Patriot Act

Nope. In simplist terms, Obama extended the PA to keep the intelligence gathering capability of the US at the same level it’s been since 9/11. How do you think the US has been able to intercept chatter that has kept backpacks from being blown up in the NYC subway system? How do you think people found out about liquid explosives being used against us?

Politicians lie about stuff all the time. I’m sure Obama got a rude awakening when he sat down in the Oval Office for the first time (if he hadn’t already been briefed on things before). The same thing will happen with whomever follows Obama. This whole idea of veering left/right is a thing the public has devised to account for the actions of the presidents. They all follow the same general path with some divergent things splattered here and there. When you look at things objectively, there isn’t really much difference between Clinton, Bush, and Obama when it comes to their actions. You can nitpick and find different things, but overall, they have all followed the same trajectory.

As far as your WND stuff, I don’t even get involved in that BS… That sh*t’s for conspiracy theorists and nutcases as something of that nature can not be executive ordered. That would have to pass through Congress first.

Wanna trade horror stories Doom? OK.

My mother is from Brazil; she grew up in barrios. My grandmother lived in a dirt filled, shack w/o running water and bathrooms. She finally got out of the barrios when my mother married my father and started sending money home to her — it wasn’t much ’cause she was, at first, just a sergeants wife; but in retrospect the little bit that she did send helped to save not only my grandmother but my uncles and aunts lives.

Debbiedoright,

We all got them stories. My point is simple. That life just a few short decades ago was much harsher, much more brutish then it is today. And given how tough things were there and yet people persevered it just strikes me as odd how people today have no idea how great their opportunities are compared to just a couple generations ago.

And of course in the rest of the world conditions like what you speak of are commonplace. I think the world bank stated that roughly 40% of the earth’s population subsists on $2 or less per day. I’ld have to double check that stat but I think its accurate.

JKL2: “obama wasn’t lying when he said he wanted to transform America. People assumed he meant for the better. They just missed the part about collapsing the system first and how that would actually be very painful to most people.”

Well that was the whole Rorschach mystery which no one seems to have been able to figure out. Obviously we’re coming at this from opposite directions, but while I agree about his cryptic nature as a president, I vigorously disagree about Obama’s desire to change the system. On the contrary, this is a president who is fiercely dedicated to preserving the general path this country has been on in numerous ways — foreign policy, trade policy, domestic security, you name it. His changes from the Bush/Cheney era have been important, but have been more about style and tactics rather than actual strategy.

Basically I agree with Brosephus 10:02, but up to a point.

“This whole idea of veering left/right is a thing the public has devised to account for the actions of the presidents”

However, there is a limit to this, and that is that historical trajectories of nations do not go on infinitely. You’re right that the notion of a giant swerve in direction with new leaders in this system, unlike in a parliamentary system, is a fantasy, a sham, that’s concocted partly by the two parties themselves, aided by the media, bec. they each ultimately benefit from maintaining that fiction over the long run by taking turns at power without any wild swings. But eventually, nations enter crisis and must make choices. At that point, in other words, the truly naive thing to think becomes the very thought that things can go on indefinitely.

We’re fast approaching such a point, if we haven’t already reached it.

No OWS vs Teaparty folks stats would be complete without the arrest records. Sometimes ya just gotta help the bugs out with dey stats.

The first answer I give is: the Occupy Wall Street protesters have been around for about 50 days, compared to about 1,000 days for the Tea Party Patriots—and so far 2,500 “Occupy” protesters have been arrested (compared to a handful of Tea Party arrests), there have been 4 rapes at Occupy Wall Street protests (and no rapes at Tea Parties) and the OWS folks have caused about $2.4 million in property damage, whereas the Tea Party Patriots have actually been a source of revenue for the cities in which we protest because we pay permit fees for our protests and we leave the city spaces cleaner than when we arrived.

States have given up too much. When did senators become more important than governors? Government works best at the local level. Lets get some term limits installed and go back to taking care of those around us.

Headline: “Holy vessel disappears from church housing Occupy Wall Street protesters”

“There’s no longer room at the inn at a Manhattan church that’s sheltering Occupy Wall Streeters after a holy vessel disappeared from the altar last week.

When the Rev. Bob Brashear prepared for Sunday services at West Park Presbyterian Church on West 86th Street, he noticed parts of the bronze baptismal font were gone.

In a fire-and-brimstone message to occupiers later that day, he thundered, “It was like pissing on the 99 percent.”

In Brooklyn, at another church housing OWS protesters, an occupier urinated on a cross, according to Rabbi Chaim Gruber, who has angrily abandoned the OWS movement.

the cities may mostly be ran by democrats but the state is (mostly) ran by republicans. hence the decaying infastructure, roads and schools. South Carolina’s shameful decaying schools is not the local mayor’s fault, it’s the state’s Republican leaders fault(s).

Take a city like Atlanta — Atlanta and fulton county provide funds for the entire state. Thank God that Atlant still runs its own airport because if the repugs have their way, they’d take away a big revenue that was paid for with Atlanta/fulton county resident taxes; disperse the fund throughout the mediocre counties, blame the dems for their problems, and then pat themselves on the back for their “governing” techniques.

Debbiedo,

I dunno. In the worst school systems in the country such as LA, NY, Chicago, Detroit the states have also been run by Dems for quite awhile. Mich. I think has had a repug for a couple years but for a long time before I think its been dem governors. And also I think education is mostly locally funded and controlled isn’t it? Not sure but I thought it was mostly funded with local property and sales taxes.

As for roads the roads outside of Atlanta tend to be pretty decent once you get outside the city. It seems the surface streets in Atl are terrible but the interstates seem fine to me. But don’t go bragging too much about the Atl airport. The people that pay to use it and keep it in business the most are from the suburbs and from all over and not Atlanta itself. And of course the airport does have one helluva reputation for corruption.

“Take a city like Atlanta — Atlanta and fulton county provide funds for the entire state”

No doubt. A point made plenty of times from Sam Massell of the Buckhead coalition, all those wealthy folks in north fulton cities like Alpharetta and Milton. We’ve heard plenty from them about supporting everyone else.

Sorry ……….. but see my 10:57. Now even a probably very, very liberal church in Manhattan can’t handle their dissent either and they have been:

EVICTED !!!!!

Scout,

I have no idea what you are talking about. Did you have something specific to say regarding one of my posts, or what. If yes, please identify the particular post and the specific item from said post otherwise I would have to just guess at what you are talking about and I see no value in doing so.

You would think that tax cheat could come up with one proveable point instead of just some opinions of what she thinks of Obama’s personality or his smile and such. None of her points below are proveable points. Just a bunch of gobbledeegook about her perceptions of the president. Not one factual statement below. Looks like she got that cult of personality thing down pat. I wonder if she prays to Obama?

The “room-lighting” smile.

The mind that always thinks.

Being so “cool”:

Being fierce – when need be

Having the intellect to be curious

The capacity to know that you are, as we are, imperfect

Having the sense to not let it destroy you

The capacity to be compassionate

Loving the troops

Understanding the horrible price of war

Now you can’t even keep up with your posts/train of thought !

1) Here’s your post:

“Wow! Look at that one lone guy getting a police escort. Such the “criminal and trash”, as Scout would put it.”

2) Here’s my post:

Sorry ……….. but see my 10:57. Now even a probably very, very liberal church in Manhattan can’t handle their dissent either and they have been:

EVICTED !!!!!

3) The point is not just the “Tea Party” but “Liberal Churches” are getting rid of the Occupiers because of the way they trash the place and theft !

4) It’s really quite easy to follow our exchange. Don’t know where you got confused.
