“Damn” is about all you can say about something like this.
“Damn fool” would be the longer version.
Andrew Adler, owner/publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, wrote a column earlier this month musing about the options available to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As Adler saw it, Netanyahu has three choices:
One, launch a pre-emptive strike against Hamas and Hezbollah.
Two, launch an attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Three, I’ll let you read for yourself:

Adler now says he didn’t really mean it, and is sorry.
Damn fool.

Jay:
A couple of points:
1) There are direct threats (I am going to do so and so), there are indirect threats (I am going to such and such “if”) and then there is “free speech” ……….. which if often not only very borderline but also offensive to the very freedoms we stand for.
2) Alder should apologize, should be fired (in my opinion) and will “probably” get a visit from the Secret Service.
3) That said, “once upon a time” there were some bumper stickers printed that said “I Wish Someone Would Shoot the *********” (I won’t even print the Constitutional position here). However, if one looked very closely, under that printing in much smaller letters it said, “With a Camera”.
Prosection was declined as it was “free speech”. The gentleman involved was interviewed and agreed to voluntarily cease and desist after it was explained to him that some “nut case” could read and see that as a message from God.

Well, at least the libs can take solace in the fact that Adler is a minority among minorities. In spite of Obama’s stance towards Israel, the Jews still overwhelmingly vote democrat: http://www.newsmax.com/InsideCover/Zogby-Obama-Jews-vote/2011/05/20/id/397147

I finally have found something I can almost agree with you, Jay, completely. ‘Almost’ only because ‘damn fool’ is far too mild. This is shameful and a total disgrace. Such threats have absolutely no place in our country. BTW, I am Jewish, a strong supporter of Israel, and a strong opponent of Obama.

Because of Bozo’s arrogant attitude toward the Jews, Israel feels pretty alone right now. They are surrounded on all sides but one with those who would have their head on a pole. I don’t favor taking out our President. A very bad decision by a desperate people. Guess he feels like Israel has one more enemy now…. if not an enemy, then someone who will look the other way. Not sure what survival means to them but I know what it would mean for me.

Scout seems to have missed a few “threats”…. there is also “Someone should do this..[and someone does]” which may be incitement and advocating unlaws action and beyond the confines of free speech. Perhaps Scout should review some of the KKK cases on the subject. There are also a few recent abortion protestor cases where the court found, for example, that a website that listed and collected names and personal information on abortion providers and others was NOT free speech but was a true threat to bodily harm, assault or kill one or more of the [providers].”
And slightly off-topic: A judge has ordered President Barack Obama to appear in court in Atlanta for a hearing on a complaint that says Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen and can’t be president The President is not above the law or being forced to appear in court, but there is an entire body of law about when it is appropriate to subpoena an official like the President. I cannot fathom that the “standards” have been truly met (and I admit that is a gut opinion and I have NOT read the briefs or other documents so I am ignorant of the alleged facts in this specific case). Imagine if the President had to appear in every court hearing every time some nut like Orily decides to subpoena him. While I realize many of the conned birthers will cheer, it is foolish. Why I am sure we’ll hear about the cost of the President traveling to GA to appear for this matter just like we hear about vacation waste.

Unless the law is changed (and I personally might want that) I don’t not feel there is a chance at any prosecution here. He wasn’t making a direct threat but outlining options the Prime Minister of Israel might have. Now, that is offensive, devisive and morally wrong but ……………..

“(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
(b) The terms “President-elect” and “Vice President-elect” as used in this section shall mean such persons as are the apparent successful candidates for the offices of President and Vice President, respectively, as ascertained from the results of the general elections held to determine the electors of President and Vice President in accordance with title 3, United States Code, sections 1 and 2. Scout, since we are talking the 1st Amendment, often there is not law but a body of law based on judicial decisions and there have been cases against abortion groups and the KKK based on exceeding the limits of free speech by inciting others to act. It may take more than repeatedly saying Tiller the Baby Killer (morally wrong but free speech, however stupid) but it is also clear that holding a sign that says “Elton John must die” and making public comments that John descrated the image of Jesus Christ and filming a video standing with that sign in front of Elton John’s home seems to exceed the standards of “free speech.”
And yes Scout we know you have new demands after your prior Box 23/26 birth certificate demands.
I want to see all of Romneys financial and personal information, Cain’s harrassment reports, Trump’s results as he reported that his investigators were in Hawaii and “you won’t believe what they are finding” and all sorts of other things. @ Kayaker: “It is a shame that it has come to this. A desperate people who feel that no one is listening.”
Absolute rubbish !!! Who are the “desperate people” you refer to who feel they are not being listened to?
Obama IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He is NOT the president of ANY OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRY. THE US chooses to aid troubled areas of the world solely on benevolence, charity, and also because we believe as Americans, that it is the right thing to do. We don’t have to, unless we have a constitutionally approved treaty to do so. But we help almost all countries at will regardless!
By your logic, should Mexican-Americans call for the harming of a sitting US president because he is not rescuing their country from the drug lords?
Should Black-Americans call for the harming of a sitting US president because he is not speedily rescuing the Ivory Coast from civil wars?
Should Iranian-Americans call for the harming of a sitting US president because he did not readily back them up when they tried to rise up against their tyrannical rulers?
ALL of the peoples in these countries are “desperate people” who feel they are not being heard. Should they call for harming a sitting US president?
Adler, or whatever the hell his name is should go stick his face in feces !!!

Scout, whether they prosecute Alder or not is within the prosecutorial discretion. Alder’s statements were beyond stupid. Except for a few crazies, I anticipated that most Americans would be highly offended. But I don’t think that Adler’s comment is going to incite a foreign government to act. While I believe myself that they were an indirect threat and a foolish and unlikely call to action, prosecution is likely to incite more stupidity rather than to deter. Make that same type of call to action at a protest outside of a locale where the President is speaking to a group exercising their 2d amendment rights and you have a very actionable and dangerous situation that exeeds free speech.

I don’t recall much furor regarding all of the death threats against Bush
Real thin on actual evidence of a failure to prosecute or to have “furor”… in fact, actual evidence suggests otherwise:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2006-10-16-bush-myspace_x.htm
Also from Wikipedia In July 2003, the Los Angeles Times published a Sunday editorial cartoon by conservative Michael Ramirez that depicted a man pointing a gun at President Bush’s head; it was a takeoff on the 1969 Pulitzer Prize-winning photo by Eddie Adams that showed Vietnamese general Nguyễn Ngọc Loan executing a Viet Cong prisoner at point-blank range. The cartoon prompted a visit from the Secret Service, but no charges were filed.[16][17] In 2005, a teacher instructed her senior civics and economics class to take photographs to illustrate the rights contained in the United States Bill of Rights. One student “had taken a photo of George Bush out of a magazine and tacked the picture to a wall with a red thumb tack through his head. Then he made a thumb’s-down sign with his own hand next to the President’s picture, and he had a photo taken of that, and he pasted it on a poster.” A Wal-Mart photo department employee reported it to police, and the Secret Service investigated. In 2007, Purdue University student Vikram Buddhi was convicted of posting messages to Yahoo Finance criticizing the Iraq War and stating, “Call for the assassination of GW Bush” and “Rape and Kill Laura Bush.” The defense had argued that the defendant never explicitly threatened anyone. He was located despite efforts to disguise where the messages were coming from.[19]
In September 2009 the Secret Service investigated Facebook polls that asked whether President Barack Obama should be assassinated.[20] Some question has arisen as to how to handle Facebook groups such as “LETS KILL BUSH WITH SHOES” (a reference to the 2008 Muntadhar al-Zaidi shoe incident) which had 484 members as of September 2009;[21] similar issues have arisen on MySpace.[22] Tweets have come under Secret Service investigation, including ones that said “ASSASSINATION! America, we survived the Assassinations and Lincoln & Kennedy. We’ll surely get over a bullet to Barrack [sic] Obama’s head,” and “The next American with a Clear Shot should drop Obama like a bad habit. 4get Blacks or his claims to b[e] Black. Turn on Barack Obama.”[23] The former tweet was marked “#tlot,” a reference to “Top Libertarians on Twitter”.[24] In 2010, a man was charged for posting a poem entitled “The Sniper” about the President’s assassination on a white supremacist website.
Does this have to come to some absurd “Bush” derangement syndrome claim?

Adler doesn’t even deserve an implied facepalm pic. That’s one dumbass..
In his column, Adler speculated Israel was already considering such an attack on Obama.
Adler rhetorically asked, “How far would you go to save a nation comprised of seven million lives … Jews, Christians and Arabs alike? You have got to believe, like I do, that all options are on the table.”

In an interview with Gawker.com, Adler denied that he was advocating an assassination attempt against Obama.
“Of course not,” he told the website. He also said he didn’t believe Israel was considering one nor should it be considered as an option. Adler said he plans publish an apology.
Dumbass contradicted himself within a week’s time. He speculates in a column and then says that he doesn’t think they’re considering it a week later. I’m pretty sure that change of mind came after the talk with the guys in the black suits.

As for Bush, I said then as I do now that any threats were inappropriate and should have been investigated and prosecuted as necessary. obama is embarrassed by the military and wishes they would go away. I guarantee obama only goes there because his PR handlers make him (thus the army of reporters. Look at me! Look at me!) The only one obama cares about is obama.

Jay The real question is: Does the USA have the right to assassinate a head of state?
Unfortunately CIA agents have assassinated foreign heads of state in the past and will most likely do so again in the future.
So if the answer is: Yes the USA has the right to assassinate foreign heads of state then morally speaking American citizens don’t have the right to complain when either a foreign govt. plots to murder the President or someone calls for the assassination of a sitting president.

An appropriate response.
The Secret Service said it is looking into a recent op-ed from an Atlanta publisher that floated the idea of green-lighting Israeli Mossad agents to assassinate President Obama in order to improve Israel’s security against enemies like Iran.
The publisher and author, Andrew Adler, reportedly has apologized.
But Jewish advocacy groups condemned his comments as “outrageous,” and Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the agency is “aware” of the incident.
“We’re conducting the appropriate investigative steps,” he told FoxNews.com.

I have been to Israel, the holy land, their is a sadness about the place. Paranoia all around, security is a hour to hour concern, what kind of life is that? Yet, the israeli people are supremely cool and live their lives. Their right wing gov’t is up on the wall, the people need them up on that wall, but to suggest that an option would be to assassinate the first african american president in these times is both tragic realistic in the terms of corrupt human nature…

Well, it IS an option…but is it a viable option? If he really thinks that assassinating the current President would put a more “Israel friendly” man in power, he’s living in dream world. Why would he even begin to think that killing the President would NOT stir up a huge amount of animous against the guilty country?

What sort of Friday night heresy was this???
I’m glad I did as the English say, and gave it a miss.
And what a moron this Adler is. Oh yeah, my tribe has them too. Few and far between but they are out there.
And I find it most appropriate that a would-be traitor and assassin spews his vomit from…………..Atlanta, Georgia. The historical home of amplitude modulated Moron Radio where such hateful garbage is common.
Fortunately the vast percentage of decent American Jews are repulsed by this idiot and his Republican-like words.
Jewish advocacy groups condemned his comments as “outrageous,” and Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the agency is “aware” of the incident.
“We’re conducting the appropriate investigative steps…
Abraham H. Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League, said there is “no excuse” for that kind of rhetoric.
“It doesn’t even belong in fiction. These are irresponsible and extremist words. It is outrageous and beyond the pale. An apology cannot possibly repair the damage,” he said in a statement. “Mr. Adler’s lack of judgment as a publisher, editor and columnist raises serious questions as to whether he’s fit to run a newspaper.”
The National Jewish Democratic Council described the comments as “despicable.”
“It is the height of irresponsibility to make the horrific suggestion that the State of Israel should assassinate the President of the United States of America,” NJDC President David Harris said in a statement. “To dare to give such despicable ideas space in a newspaper — no less in the words of the paper’s owner and publisher, and a Jewish newspaper at that — is beyond the pale.”

I blame Israel and AIPAC for this nuts comments. I read Israeli newspapers and the venom expressed towards Obama is similar to this Israel Firster. He should be deported to join the other crazed, religious fanatics that run Israel’s government. They are trying to bully the US to attack Iran on Israel’s behalf. The Republican Jewish neo-cons ( Kristol, Feith, Perle, Wolfowitz, and Abrams) that lied our way into Iraq, still control the Republican Party and have received pledges from all Presidential candidates, except for Paul, for war with Iran, ayear before the election. Wake up, folks. The same disinformation program, like the lead up to the war in Iraq has begun. Israel wants us to have a pre-emptive war with Iran regarding alleged WMD’s. Been there, done that, and it sure worked out well. Google or use youtube and type-in “israeli settlers” to meet the religious fanatics from hell that control Israel’s government. Get ready to fight any attempt by ther US to attack Iran. Our economy and the world’s economy will go into a tailspin and and many lives will be lost. I have no problem with Iran having a nucleur weapon since Israel has about 400 warheads and their religious fanatics more than match the ayatollahs.

MSNBC’s Amy Robach in 2006 mildly wondered if “Death of a President” movie depicting the imagined assassination of President Bush was “poor taste or, as some say, thought-provoking?”
Those Brits and their movies! I thought they were Bush’s friends although I must admit that I have mildly wondered if that is truly the case. Anyway, I would not and did not waste my time it. The book, “The Death of a President,” might be a better investment. As for the former veep, Dick Cheney, were people still interested in him after he was out of office. Why. Was there talk of him doing a Darth Vader spinoff or something.

During the Clinton days the budget was balanced, not because of Newt, but in spite of Newt.
Besides Newt is at heart a lifelong Democrat. He only became a Republican so he could run in the general election against the sitting Democrat, Jack Flynt.

From that Haaretz article…
Like most of you, I have never met Andrew B. Adler, owner and publisher of the Atlanta Jewish Times, but I think we can all agree that the man is spectacularly stupid. In his contorted apologies he has described himself, after all, as “an idiot.”
The three or four infantile paragraphs of vile text that Adler published in his obscure Atlanta newspaper last week, in which he suggested that Israel consider assassinating President Obama, almost slipped under the radar, but was picked up yesterday by Gawker.com, and is now going viral. “A fool may throw a stone into a well which even a hundred wise men cannot pull out”, the saying goes, and it will indeed take a long time and a great effort to undo the damage that Adler has wrought, in one fell swoop, in defaming Israel by implying that it might, in anyone’s wildest dreams, consider such a kooky conspiracy; in staining American Jews by appearing to supposedly represent their twisted way of thinking; and even by undermining the institution of Jewish journalism by exposing that it harbors such birdbrained bozos in its midst.

If you lose a government pension, it will be as a result of the Republican’s efforts. They’re the only ones pushing that sort of Draconian cut in government in case you have not noticed. For a wee bit of perspective from others outside our shores (or some inside our shores):
It was first reported in January of last year that the Obama administration had compiled a hit list of American citizens whom the President had ordered assassinated without any due process, and one of those Americans was Anwar al-Awlaki. No effort was made to indict him for any crimes (despite a report last October that the Obama administration was “considering” indicting him). Despite substantial doubt among Yemen experts about whether he even had any operational role in Al Qaeda, no evidence (as opposed to unverified government accusations) was presented of his guilt. When Awlaki’s father sought a court order barring Obama from killing his son, the DOJ argued, among other things, that such decisions were “state secrets” and thus beyond the scrutiny of the courts. He was simply ordered killed by the President: his judge, jury and executioner. When Awlaki’s inclusion on President Obama’s hit list was confirmed, The New York Times noted that “it is extremely rare, if not unprecedented, for an American to be approved for targeted killing.”

An assault or evil wish on our president is an assault and threat on us all (bet you liberals never said that about Bush or Reagan).
Anyway moving on to more pressing matters:
How about Newt’s beatdown of John King on DNCNN at the beginning of the debates, eh? Priceless. ‘Bout time someone said what we’re all thinking: main stream media shrills for Obama.
From the AP: “President Obama blames the press for creating the image that he’s aloof and disconnected from the rest of Washington, insisting in a new interview that he’s just more interested in spending time with his family than in exchanging pleasantries with strangers.”
Really? He’s blaming the [liberal] press for who he is? Laughable. Four more years!
“Michelle Obama celebrated her 48th birthday Tuesday night with her husband and friends at a D.C. steakhouse where the menu features a $28 hamburger named ‘The Obama.’”
Amazing how we don’t ever see pictures of these events where all the millionaires hang out with the Obamas, eh?
“General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson agreed Wednesday to testify next week before a House panel investigating the government’s handling of an investigation into fire risks in the Chevrolet Volt.”
Well, you can’t expect one of Obama’s “green” creations to have a problem, right? So what if your power bill goes through the roof charging it every night because Obama killed coal. It’s all about the “green” man.
And for the finale and circling back to the liberal media, NPR’s Nina Totenberg on Friday claimed that there were more people on food stamps under W. Bush than there are under Obama today (no, she really said that even as we’ve been pummeled with data stating otherwise). But that’s not the best of it. The best part is she said “facts don’t matter” to Gingrich. You seriously cannot make this stuff up. If ever there were a textbook example of liberals relying on emotions over fact, this is it:
“NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: You know, Newt knows how to play this game. And as Charles said, he is in his own backyard, right next to Georgia, and he is incredibly glib. It doesn’t matter that, you know, that there were more people on food stamps under George W. Bush. It doesn’t matter that his suggestion is that minorities are the ones who get food stamps, that far more white people get food stamps. It doesn’t matter that working people get food stamps in order to feed their families. Facts don’t matter to him and it makes for great, it makes for great talk.”
Just the facts, Ma’am. Imagine all the scams and shenanigans here:
“USDA data released this week shows that the number of Americans receiving food aid from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) hit another all-time high in August. 45.8 million people — almost 15% of the country — were enrolled in the program, which replaced Food Stamps in 2008. This is only a slight increase from July, when 45.3 million Americans were receiving SNAP help — but a massive 31% jump since June 2009, when the National Bureau of Economic Research declared the most recent recession over.”

This Ragin’ Cajun cracks me up sometimes.
The guy certainly has the neo-cons nailed…
Memo to Republican Establishment:
Let me break it to you gently — you’ve got a first-class disaster on your hands. I know you boys thought this thing would work out and you would be able to whip the Republicans in line to fall in behind Mitt (I assume you are all males but if there is a female in the establishment, I apologize.) Not going too good, is it fellows?
It’s been a terrible time to be a Republican. There have been many moments during this process that have caused me great joy. Certainly the events of Thursday, ending with the CNN debate, and even the Fox debate Monday night, have helped ease the pain of my beloved Tigers’ and Saints’ recent defeats.
I mean, most people thought it was kind of a watermark when your Tea Party gang booed the golden rule. You know, I’ve spent some time in Philly and they have always thought they were pretty radical because they actually booed Santa Claus and Willie Mays. Philly, I’ve got news for you — you ain’t got nothing on South Carolina Republicans. They just aren’t buying any of that do-unto-others garbage.
I actually thought my favorite moment of this delightful process was when one of your eight front-runners, Herm Cain, (as Sarah Palin calls him) actually ran an ad with his campaign manager endorsing him. (Rove, why didn’t you think of that in 2000? Imagine the headline: “Rove endorses Bush.”)
The climax of that delicious ad is when he actually takes a drag on a cigarette. But my favorite thing about Herm’s campaign manager is that he is the only person in the history of the world that was actually barred from political consulting. Let me tell you, I’ve been in this business for quite a while and I’ve never known of anyone other than Mark Block to be suspended from practicing this profession.
PS — As my former boss once said, I feel your pain. That’s why I didn’t mention Rick Perry.

taxpayer- If you lose a government pension, it will be as a result of the Republican’s efforts.
I’ll offer up there should be a big difference between my pension and that of a government official. Remember when govenment officials used to be civil servants? Now most are the highest overpaid positions out there. I would do my job for less, but compared to what I have had to sacrifice next to some sitting behind a desk pretending to be important, I feel I kind of deserve it. It you want to cut some payroll, most officers are grossly overpaid and I won’t even go into contractors.

There’s one thing that people do not consider when discussing the targeting of Americans, and that is the oaths that are taken by the president, the military, and government law enforcement officials that would be responsible for taking such actions.
Presidential Oath of Office:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Military Oath of Office:
“I, *****, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
Fed Oath of Office:
”I, *****, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that <b.I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
Seems that law dictates that, if a citizen is deemed an enemy of the Constitution, it is the duty of the president, military, and government as a whole to defend the Constitution in spite of the fact that they are doing such against a citizen.

If you guys think Jay’s got it in for Newt, ya might oughta have a look at Rude Pundit’s latest…
[W]hen Gingrich went all angry chimp on CNN’s John King at last night’s GOP South Carolina debate over a question about Marianne Gingrich’s interview with ABC, it wasn’t only unexpected. It’s what he does. He’s always the victim. When he said, “I am tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans,” you could have put Bill Clinton in there.
Oh, wait. Here’s Gingrich in June 1996 in the Washington Times: “[T]here is no president in modern times more systematically protected by the elite media.” (Indeed, one could go through much of the way Gingrich has attacked Obama and find almost verbatim antecedents in his attacks on Clinton, Gore, and Kerry.)
In December 1994, Gingrich was congratulating the House Republicans for their victory in the midterms. After talking about his family, he said, “I want to ask all of you to join me in — (pauses) — I’m trying to think. It’s a little difficult to say. In thanking the person who has endured more from the media and more from the process than anybody should have to for me to be here, my wife Marianne.” Callista Bisek, who was a House staffer, was probably there for that rally. Maybe she was a little uncomfortable as Gingrich introduced his wife since the Speaker had been f###ing Callista for a year already.

I’ll leave with this last nugget of wisdom:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

So, if somebody states that they think something is deeply flawed, that automatically means they hate it? Dude, I hope you don’t pull a hammy trying to stretch like that.
From your link:
“The original Constitution as well as the Civil War Amendments,” he replied. “But I think it is an imperfect document, and I think it is a document that reflects some deep flaws in American culture, the Colonial culture nascent at that time.
“African-Americans were not — first of all they weren’t African-Americans — the Africans at the time were not considered as part of the polity that was of concern to the Framers. I think that as Richard said it was a ‘nagging problem’ in the same way that these days we might think of environmental issues, or some other problem where you have to balance cost-benefits, as opposed to seeing it as a moral problem involving persons of moral worth.
“And in that sense,” Obama continued, “I think we can say that the Constitution reflected an enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on until this day, and that the Framers had that same blind spot. I don’t think the two views are contradictory, to say that it was a remarkable political document that paved the way for where we are now, and to say that it also reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day.”
So pointing out the fact that the Framers didn’t give a rat’s ass about Africans as a flaw means that he hates the Constitution?
md
True and valid point. However, striking transit workers in NYC don’t have an effect on Atlanta. Striking air traffic controllers, on the other hand, would cripple the country. Fed union members may not number more than state/local, but their impact is felt countrywide as opposed to locally. If states want the same restrictions as feds, they could legislate it using the fed unions as a model of operation. Walker in Wisconsin could have easily done that and not be faced with possibly losing his job now.

I’ll get the ball rolling for you, JKL2, regarding how to pay your benefits. We’ll need a little background info on federal tax revenues and outlays first:
For 2010,
Outlays (billions) — DoD: 705
Social Security: 707
Medicare/Medicaid/Chip: 732
SSI/school meals/food stamps,etc.: 496
Interest on Debt: 196
Fed retiree/vet benefits: 245
Science/Med research: 70
Transportation Infrastructure: 105
Education: 105
All Other: 105
Revenues — Individual Income Tax: 899
Corporate Income Tax: 191
Payroll Tax: 865
Excise/Other: 208
Deficit: 1300
Okay, JKL2, make it work. But remember that you must cut taxes for the wealthiest regardless of what you do. That is basic Republican mantra.

There’s certainly no excusing rapes at camps, but there is no comparison between OWS and TP as they were attempting to do very different things. As far as I know there were no TP encampments or overnight events, which is because the statement that was being made was entirely different. But the problem is in your conception of violence.
On balance, the TP is violent on a whole different level as it gave us a further strangulation of our political process, a further determination to slash our social compact and safety net, and all in the name of a collection of middle-aged white people frightened because their way of life is changing.

The one that tells a person that I do not have to get a education, I do not have to work hard and I do not have to take the responsibility for raising a child I choice to bring into this world because I know that no one is going to hold me accountable of my actions. td: “And what social compact are you talking about? The one that rewards people for not making responsible decisions in their live? ”
That question cannot legitimately be posed in a broken, kleptocratic system such as our own where CEOs collect gigantic bonuses for driving companies into the ditch and gutting them, where a speculative finance industry creates mountains of toxic debts and then pockets massive tax-payer funded bailouts without even a tiny blip in their career ascent. In a broken down, rotten klepto-system, the Adam Smithian question of simple virtue and responsibility is negated and eliminated. It no longer applies.
“The one that tells a person that I do not have to get a education,”
See above. When education funding is increasingly privatized instead of free as it should be as a public good, your question becomes an absurdity. As in many other areas, the Tea Party has accelerated a trend towards gutting the social compact (i.e. public funding) that allowed middle- and lower-earning families could still send their children to college.
Before the neoliberal regime took hold of our governing process in the New York City fiscal crisis of the mid-70s, it was understood that public higher education should be accessible for close to free. But the neoliberals attacked that as one of their first symbolic gestures, gutting free access to CUNY. The result, several decades later: mushrooming debt loads for students.
” I know that no one is going to hold me accountable of my actions. ”
Again, see above. When the high-finance, banking and corporate CEO class becomes a protection racket that loots public budgets and increasingly dumps all the risk on the public while funneling profits to the top, then “accountability for my actions” becomes a sick joke, a quaint notion with no relevance for our current predicament. As Adam Smith knew, it takes enormous struggle to extricate your economic system from the tentacles of big money so that it can be accessible for the exercise of common virtue like thrift, hard-work, and wage earning. We’ve reached the point now where — and this is the significance of Romney’s Bain Capital woes — the very assertion that $1 earned through labor should not be taxed higher than $1 reaped through capital profits is daring and radical. And by the way did you notice how fast Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry ceased their attacks against Romney for that?
The people who rule the media narrative in this country got that stopped in a New York second buddy.

eed had we left Iran alone and not put the Shah in power and then funded his ability to brutalize his own people the Iranian students would have had no reason what so ever to attack the US embassy.
Didn’t you get the memo, David? Since around 2001 when the Bush/Cheney regime set the pattern for what the US response would be to global violence visited (revisited?) on us, that question has been strictly forbidden. It’s the road that must not be gone down, the question that must not be asked at all costs. So no one dare ask it. After that colossal historical trauma of 9/11, this country had a chance to at least begin a process of soul-searching which would have consisted in an effort as a nation to consider whether we just might have had some responsibility, through our cynicism and ruthless preservation of self interest in foreign policy, often covert, even if it meant trampling on the ideals we were professing as a nation our of the other side of our mouths, for creating perhaps some of the violence that we were now suffering. But faced with that opportunity, the Bush/Cheney people, helped along by the so-called ‘liberal’ media, slammed that door shut with great force and placed a ‘do not open’ sign on it, under heavily armed guard.

Let’s ignore the incredibly high gas prices, even though there is plenty of reserves.
Let’s ignore the new presidential decrees that say that the Government can monitor reporters and monitor anyone that the government might think as being an adversary of the government.
Let’s concentrate on the personalities of the party that has no power, but wants to put a stop to the insane movements of the current government.
Let’s make religion the enemy. Let’s make corporations the enemy.
Anything but the government and what they say is evil and must be silenced.
Let’s listen to only the media outlets that protect this administration and demonize any who dare speak out against what this government wants or claims.
Let’s accept unemployment numbers that only include people who have recently lost their jobs when we all know that people have been losing their jobs for over five years and many have simply stopped looking.
Let’s accept inflation numbers that do not include food prices which continue to rise at levels that we have never seen.
Let’s just shrug and pay the $5.60/gallon for skim milk bought, not at whole foods, not at the high dollar designer grocery stores but at Walmart.
Let’s accept the fact that in the past three months, the costs of vegetables have increased an average of 48%, and in the past year, almost 200%.
Let’s make jokes about the fact that more people are now on food stamps than ever before in the history of the country. And of course more Americans living in poverty than ever before.
Let’s continue to ignore the incredible profits being made by the Health Insurance Companies while private businesses have to resort to offering no more than catastrophic insurance for their employers where before ObamaCare, they had great insurance with dental and eye care.
Let’s demonize the opposing party candidate that dares to speak out for people demanding, not food stamps but jobs.
Let’s ignore the fact that the current president brags about raising a billion dollars to be used to destroy the credibility of anyone who runs against him and in the same speech talks about how evil Republicans are for their associations with rich people.
Let’s demonize the Tea Party, while the top eight domestic terrorists, listed on the FBI’s top eight list are all progressives or liberals and most from far left, radical groups and one being a member of Black Liberation Theology, the exact same teachings that Obama’s Chicago church educated its members in.

Stevie Ray, as I read the chart, it almost doubled from 2000-2008, then fell off sharply in 2009.
But I suspect you’re making too much of it. If you look at the chart, exports roughly tripled from ‘70 to ‘80, more than doubled from ‘80 to ‘90, doubled again from ‘90 to 2000, and then less than doubled before hitting the wall in ‘09.
So it was nothing remarkable.

Let’s demonize the opposing party candidate that dares to speak out for people demanding, not food stamps but jobs.
Demonize?
Like the way the Republican establishment rushed their idea goons out to summarily crush the seriousness of the Ron Paul candidacy the moment it began to look like he might be gaining even the slightest inkling of momentum? That demonization?
Or the way the ruling establishment no doubt told Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich in no uncertain terms that they would reap the consequences — one dare not speculate what — if they did not cease and desist immediately from drawing attention to Mitt Romney’s actions at Bain Capital and its poster boy status of the klepto-capitalism that has thrived in this system since the 1980s?
That kind of demonization?
Besides, who among this opposition is “speaking out for people demanding, not food stamps but jobs”?
What has a single one of these people done to create a single job?
Mitt Romney?
Are you joking?
A man who as we speak is sheltering along with his wife dozens of millions of dollars in tax havens in the Cayman Islands?
With tax rates for the wealthy at historically low levels, that money sitting off shore is obviously working wonders to create jobs for Americans.

Ok, I realize Rick Perry has some claim to that in Texas.
But the lower-income nature of the majority of these new Texas jobs, combined with the direction his state has moved in terms of social safety net programs, means to me that his record is in no way something to brag about when it comes to creating opportunity and security for working people (i.e., people needing jobs).

Pretty despicable for this man to be advocating assassination of a sitting U.S. president as an option.
But lets not forget our own hypocrisy considering how many foreign presidents we have either assassintated, targeted for assassination, or flat out sponsored coups that overthrew their govts. We’ve done lots of that in our own hemisphere alone- Guatemala in 1954, Salvador Allende in 1973. And in many instances we’ve then had those govts replaced with and supported despotic dictators like Somoza, Batista, Pinochet, and on and on.
So while what this man said was effed up lets put away the faux outrage considering our own sordid history of taking out leaders of other countries whether by assassination or coup.

Common sense,
A lot of those jobs and a lot of blue collar jobs have been taken up by illegal aliens and American contractors that employ them. That and I think a lot of kids coming out of high school or college don’t quite expect to start at the bottom and work there way up, particularly the college educated ones that think they are going to start in middle management somewhere. But from what I’ve seen so far if you have a college degree in something like the hard sciences like chemistry, mathematics, information technology, etc. then you do have a job waiting for you. The kids that graduated with sociology or political science majors not so much.

And do you want to hear something to really blow your doors off?
At a time where productivity has soared to unprecedented levels, and with well over the wealth needed worldwide to provide nourishment to the world’s people, and with capitalism perhaps becoming permanently unhinged from the labor-wage coupling as owner wages soar into the stratosphere based on pure rent and privatization of the commons (read: confiscation) for rent extraction (a la Bill Gates), we are perhaps arriving at a time to contemplate the most radical idea of all:
severing the relationship between work and money altogether.
In other words, let’s stop talking about distributing jobs and instead give people what they really need.
Which is not jobs so much as it is CASH.
Let’s start talking about redistributing CASH pure and simple — aside from any talk of labor.

With those hindrances there’s really not a lot of places for them to go and quite frankly its always been that way. Those people used to get decent paying jobs in construction, roofing or contracting work, decent paying factory work. But a lot of those jobs are now taken up by immigrants. Just not a lot of options for people with no particular skills. And its always been that way. Its just worse now because of the competition with immigrants for those jobs.

At one point Saddam Hussein was a friend. Then he became an enemy.
At one point the mujahideen were our best buddies (the CIA’s, that is) bec they were great for wreaking havoc for those evil Commie Soviets, who were the enemy then.
Later, when the Soviet enemy disappeared, then the mujahideen stepped into the role of enemy.

We’ll increasingly see people happy to be “paid” not so much in salary but in return for certain intangibles, vanity, etc. (social media, crowdsourcing, access to fun work atmospheres, social connections, rock gigs), and so forth.

But, but. I’ll point out for a second time today the simple fact that the entire economic system is unhinged from any quaint Adam Smithian notions such as thrift, diligence, and responsibility for ones actions.
At the risk of overstating slightly, what matters now is not responsibility in the sense of common everyday responsibility, but what suits the interests of the powerful. Now it’s true that Tom Delay sits in jail, as will Blago soon, and Abramoff did his time. But Citizens United will help further open the floodgates to an era that will make the actions of these men seem, and the fact that they did time for them, seem quaint indeed.
“Are you trying to tell us that if you are born in a poor family then you are not capable of getting an education?”
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to do so, as recent figures on the decline in upward mobility in this country vis-a-vis European countries illustrate. In Europe neoliberal ideology has at least been slowed down in its vicious attack on the notion of a public-funded education (the UK is a different story) and the more you see that idea triumph here, with help from the Tea Party, the harder it will be for average families to send their kids to college.

I saw an interview with some young college students this morning about why they support Ron Paul. They said that they liked his views on adhering to the American Constitution and his views on the government staying out of our private lives. Ironically, to the man or woman, these young people were Obama supporters in 2008. For those that are willing to see, which apparently is more and more people of all generations, Obama has proven himself ready to run roughshod over the Constitution and to intervene as much as possible into the lives of the American people through his use of the such agencies as the EPA, Homeland Security and the appointment of ultra-liberal individuals to control shadowy pseudo-agencies and departments without Congressional approval. Obama supporters appear to want to be controlled by the government and would can only deduce that this is because they cannot control their own lives themselves.
And for all of you out there that support Obama and his Helathcare program I hope that you will remember the number 70. That is the age at which no matter how severe your medical problem is, you are considered as being a, and I quote from the bill, “a unit” and that any medical procedure that is performed on you will have to go through a government review board for approval before it can be performed. EEOC officials said the company’s policy of not hiring workers with arrest records disproportionately excluded more than 300 black applicants. The policy barred applicants who had been arrested, but not convicted of a crime, and denied employment to others who were convicted of minor offenses.
Using arrest and conviction records to deny employment can be illegal if it’s irrelevant for the job, according to the EEOC, which enforces the nation’s employment discrimination laws. The agency says such blanket policies can limit job opportunities for minorities with higher arrest and conviction rates than whites.

Kam, just to add to my point about the word ‘liberal’ as used by the Rush Limpos of the world, which is to make the term serve as a big bow around a giant package of sh$t for the rubes, to give them a tattered banner to march under, I would note that the right wins to the extent that it can collapse the entire spectrum of political action into a false choice between whatever their favored ideological meme of the day might be (capitalism, free enterprise, patriotism, American exceptionalism, we’re broke) and ‘liberal’, they win.
To the extent that the left can be collapsed into one single label, ‘liberal’, when can then be thrown like a blanket over a Democratic party in disarray, which includes such turncoats as Evan Bayyyyyh Bayh, and Rammmmmm Emanuel, it’s game over for any real alternative to whatever junk the right happens to be trying to ram down our throats at any given time.

The EEOC is out of control and they have been for years.
Pepsi should have taken that to the SCOTUS.
I don’t care what the EEOC says ……….. I wouldn’t want someone with an arrest record (and getting off everytime) working for me.

You are avoiding the question at hand. I want to know what you think should happen? How should things be changed to make us a better society?

Kamchak: “Are you familiar with Geoffrey Nunberg’s book Talking Right: How Conservatives Turned Liberalism Into A Tax-Raising, Latte-Drinking, Sushi-Eating, Volvo-Driving, New York Times-Reading, Body-Piercing, Hollywood-Loving, Left-Wing Freak Show?”
Wow, no, but thanks for bringing him to my attention.
A linguist in the tradition of Lakoff perhaps, another linguist who’s long been jumping up and down trying to get a weak and undisciplined Democratic party to wake up to the decisive power of language.
To no avail, for the most part, as you still have the supposedly ‘left’ side of the debate represented by naive, over-bookish technocrats like Barack Obama who thinks ideas and historical values are self-evident and thus don’t need to be fought for to the death at the level of the WORD.
Who’s a politician who understands that in the beginning was the word?
We just saw him in action the other night with another flash of brilliance, when cornered with the word “grandiose” as an accusation, he rared back like Mighty Casey and sent it sailing over the center field fence for all to marvel at.
Now THAT’s how somebody operates who understands that you stand or fall with your understanding of the visceral power of words!

“Well according to some (Bernie Sanders, for ex.), we could start by removing big money from the political system”
How is that going to solve any problem because then the people that can hire the most lobbyist to be in a Representatives office the most time will still get their ideas considered first. Now, here are a couple suggestions that I believe may work.
1: Pass a law that say 100% of contributions must come from a Representative’s district or a Senators state. It does not matter how much and if it is from a individual, corporation or interest group. If you do not live in or have an office in the district or sate then you can not contribute.
2: Sunshine: All contributions must be placed on an easy readable website within 24 hours of receiving them or the money is forfeited to general funds of the state. The website must contain the amount, the name of the person donating, the company the person works for and all organizations the person belongs too.
The voter can then go in and decide if their representative is giving to much consideration to someones issues and hold their own representative accountable. The Representative or Senator would also be much more likely to pay closer attention to their own constituents this way and all these businesses and organizations would have to open up offices all over the country (more jobs) in order to have the same type of influence they currently have.

td, those ideas sound pretty good to me. But obviously the people who are quite happy with the status quo will very much be in opposition, I’m guessing. After all, McCain/Feingold failed not for nothing.
And of course the current system is bipartisan. Take Democrat Charles Schumer, of New York City, is famous for his lavish contributions from his home district which houses the financial industry.

1. Stupid idea
2. Doesn’t accomplish the goal anyway of stopping Iran
3. Biden might then elect to nuke Israel, doubly dumb

kamchak,
Yes. You are correct. But a lot of those people count as unskilled job labor with limited educational attainment, possibly criminal records, not a whole lot going on for them.
A lot have criminal records?
Some do — no doubt that is factual throughout the entire metro Atlanta area, but “a lot” inside the perimeter south of I-20?
I don’t know that and I’ve lived here for 50 some odd years.

Appalling! I condemn Adler’s despicable sentiment, and I hope he is vilified in every way. Let him lose his column, career, and last cent. Fortunately its still just a threat, not an action.
I’m glad to see him scrutinized + humiliated. I hope he loses everything.
Seriously?

Why isn’t the guy who wrote the article provoking the assassination of a US president on US soil by Israeli sleeper cells mediately locked up, tried and hung or treason against the USA? And why are these sleeper cells roaming free in US soil? This is absolutely insane that its not front page news.

Note that it’s a given Mossad agents are in the US. Is it anti-semetic to wonder why?

I completely support Adler. Obama is protecting Iran while paying lip service to Israel. Besides, “take out” was meant in political sense. I am quite sure of it. The only mistake that Adler made is he has given all antisemites a reason to spew their hate with Jay Bookman leading the way.
