Perry dropping out, deferring to Newt

Oh boy, things are getting interesting.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will reportedly drop out of the race today and endorse Newt Gingrich. One poll released today by Insider Advantage already shows Gingrich leading in South Carolina. Another shows Gingrich and Romney tied, with the former speaker carrying a lot of momentum into the final days of the primary scheduled for Saturday.

That sets up a high-stakes battle in tonight’s GOP debate on CNN. Personally, it is still inconceivable that the GOP has become so dysfunctional as to nominate Gingrich as its champion, but if Newt wins South Carolina, he’ll have a good claim to being the anointed conservative alternative to Romney and can at least make a race of it in Florida.

I guess I’ll be watching CNN tonight.

UPDATE: According to ABC News, Marianne Gingrich claims that Newt wanted to be “shared” between her and Callista in an open marriage. That may be enough to make me rethink my assessment that her comments won’t have much impact. We have no way of knowing whether it’s actually true, of course. It might be a complete fabrication. But you have to think it will stop some voters dead in their tracks….

The GOP has become so dysfunctional as to nominate Gingrich as its champion. mmmmmm

Does he think that he can win and govern without other races?

How do you know if he will not throw some of you under the bus?

Newt is the most qualified candidate in the race, on both the Republican and Democrat side. So sorry you have a personal grudge which clouds your journalistic judgment, Jay. Though he’s still somewhat of a long shot, it will bring me great pleasure to make you eat your words. I wouldn’t feel that way if you hadn’t been so unnecessarily disrespectful thus far. In this way, you’re hardly better than the conservative jackasses here who continue to address Obama as “Bozo”, “Obumbler”, etc. I will admit to chuckling at the “Oblamer” label, though I won’t use it myself out of respect.

Doesn’t seem like it after seeing how they are all bowing down to Romney. It’s gonna be interesting to see how two invertebraes campaign against each other. Obama’s shown a hint at having some cartilage recently, but Mitt can’t decide on what he believes in from day to day.

It will come down to which one of the two millionaires appear to best empathize with the common man. There’s a choice between the venture (vulture) capitalist or the community organizer. Not really hard to see which one would have some idea of what the average person is dealing with. Now the GOP is about to reap the harvest they have sown with that community organizer crap.
