Newt Gingrich’s campaign has apparently gone into freefall in Iowa, to the point that the recent frontrunner has been reduced to musing publicly that a fifth-place finish wouldn’t be so bad. Millions of dollars of negative campaigning aimed in his direction has put a torpedo right in his ample midship.
Newt has complained bitterly about the tactic, calling the attacks “reprehensible” and claiming that the candidates who use them “ought to be ashamed of themselves” and that it “demeans America.” Personally, though, I think there’s a certain poetry in the fact that Gingrich has come undone in such a fashion.
After all, his fellow Republicans are merely using what someone once called “contrasting words,” “powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast.” That certain someone even created a list of such words, urging his followers to “apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.”
On the vocabulary list drafted by that certain someone and recommended for deployment in politics are many of the words now being directed at Gingrich by members of his own party, and apparently with devastating effect. For example:
abuse of power
betray
bizarre
cheat
coercion
collapse(ing)
corrupt
corruption
cynicism
decay
destroy
destructive
devour
disgrace
endanger
excuses
failure (fail)
greed
hypocrisy
ideological
impose
incompetent
insecure
insensitive
intolerant
liberal
lie
mandate(s)
obsolete
pathetic
radical
self-serving
selfish
sensationalists
shallow
shame
sick
steal
threaten
traitors
waste
Watching all this happen, another word comes to mind, a word that isn’t on that certain someone’s list. That word is karma.

Even worse is that Gingrich is nothing more than a “Jack Abramoff’ that has played the revolving door among political connections, business and lobbying that the Tea Party has railed against.

Makes me wonder if the Obama campaign is going to see these negative ads as essential against the GOP nominee, knowing how gullible the simpletons (majority of all voters) can be. Personally, I think Obama needs to get more bad-@ss in rhetoric. It works for him (”Ask Osama Bin Laden if I practice appeasement!”)

The honorable Speaker Gingrich knew that he would be attacked by the establishment Republicans who fear that a dynamic, sharp, seasoned man will actually win. I was talking about this with my fellow Republicans over there in Iowa. They believe that the old guard needs to leave the party and join the Socialist-Democrat Party of America. During his very successful tenure as Speaker, the honorable Mr. Gingrich produced four balanced budgets and did so with a Socialist-Democrat “president” who was barely at the wheel.
A President Gingrich will make us energy independent by loosening up ridiculous regulations on the job creators. President Gingrich would cut the income tax to 15 perecent for all. Mr. Gingrich will beef up our weak defense thereby staring down the jihadists who are roaming the planet unfettered. This man WILL stop Iran’s nuclear program. President Gingrich will create millions of jobs starting on Day One. He’ll scrap the illegal ObamaCare “plan.” The best part of a Gingrich administration will be a return to dignity in the Oval Office and a respect for life in our society. I pray that a President Gingrich WILL elimiinate the Department of Commerce, the Dept. of Miseducation and the EPA.
I’m praying that my friends in Iowa make the right choices on Tuesday and support the honorable Speaker Newt Gingrich. Those negative ads by Restore Our Future are only helping the Socialist-Democrat folk.
Amen,
Bill

He has his warts, admitted, but he is so far ahead of the dolt that occupies that Kailua vacation home at 10K/night that the comparison is really absurd. Virtually nothing that Bozo has done has worked. It has cost more than he said it would and, for the most part, has been an abject failure. We have poured gazillions of dollars down some hole in the ground and to what avail? He shuffles the unemployment numbers to try to massage his image while 120 Sears/K-Mart stores close their doors. You can spin this idiot all you want and the bottom line….. he is still the same old community organizer that he was in 2008. And you are going to vote for him AGAIN!!! I’m still loving Newt. Primarily because you guys hate him so much, but also because of the blue-blood establishment’s response to him. Republicanism is dead, they just don’t know it yet. Bush killed it. At some point it time they have to figure out you can’t be “big government” and “low taxes”. You have to pay for what you pass. You can’t privatize everything. Somethings are best administered by government.
I think killing Newts campaign was a republican initiative. He is the only one that would hold both side’s of congress’s feet to the fire to pass meaningful legislation to fix the mess we have instead of posturing with radical unpassable legislation for the purpose of political sound bites.

So it’s better that crippled companies limp along and eventually go under, tossing lots of folks out of jobs than it is to take over a failing company, get rid of the diseased part, put the company on a course to success so it can grow and expand and create more jobs?
There’s a lot of qualifiers behind the talking points.

Has it occurred to anyone that people in Iowa just love this kind of attention? What else do they have outside of a straw poll in August and a presidential caucus every 4 years? The fact that they are first is meaningless if you consider that at least half of the electorate will cast their vote based on what they heard in a 30 second sound bite approximately 24 hours before entering the polling place. Let’s give it a rest already.

If Romney wins the nominations (and does not pick a gimmick VP), his record as Governor of Mass will be the most relevant item to me.
I was a bit surprised to see how his job approval withered during his last couple of years as Gov.

Hoist “with” or “upon” but not “by”
Once again the intelligence of the editorial writers shines dimly:
The word petard comes from the Middle French peter, to break wind, from pet expulsion of intestinal gas, from Latin peditum, from neuter of peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind; akin to Greek bdein to break wind. (Merriam-Webster) Petard remains a French word meaning a firecracker today (in French slang, it means a handgun, or a joint).
The word remains in modern usage in the phrase hoist with one’s own petard, which means “to be harmed by one’s own plan to harm someone else” or “to fall into one’s own trap,” literally implying that one could be lifted up (hoist, or blown upward) by one’s own bomb.

Wait a minute…I get lost in the rhetoric of this blog site. I regretably loose sight of the fact that you are a liberal, preach to a liberal audience, and enjoy the collective lunatic ideas of your political party. Is it any wonder that you and your blog club have voted for immoral liars and inexperienced community organizers to represent the office of the president. Therefore, pragmatic people and common sense people take you guys with a grain of salt and swallow your rhetoric with a healthy dose of lubricant.
No matter who you demean and rail against, the fact remains that any one of these candidates are a far better choice for president than the one you voted for and are trying to defend. His record speaks for himself. The congressional Democrats (Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Boxer, Schumer, Frank, Franken, etc.) lead the pack in kook ideology.
We have historical debt on account of the above lunatics. Your Democrat Senate has failed to pass a balanced budget in over 900 days. This group proudly proclaims cost cutting initiatives from the House as DOA before it even arrives on the Senate floor. It’s their way or no way. Pathetic.
There is no serious thought to the idea of reduced spending. There is no serious thought to the idea of curtailed borrowing. There is no responsibility in fiscal management. You spend like drunken sailors. Is it any wonder business owners won’t invest when there is uncertainty in their future?
We have ideas, but you Democrats have none. You Democrats have nothing to offer but cheesy 2 month plans of kicking the can down the road and ripping the good intentions of your political opponents.

So a young entrepreneur has an idea that will net $10 million a year. He goes to the bank to borrow the money to put his plan in place. Banker says “sure”, and agrees to it because that’s what bankers do – they find opportunities that will make their bank profits on interest.
The young entrepreneur then decides it’s too risky – with democrats in the white house and all – and decides to not start the business .
What does the banker do? He b*t@# slaps the young entrepreneur and cancels the loan – because now he knows this idiot could never run a business successfully.

Businesses aren’t hiring for a couple of reasons the most significant being the inability to assess exactly how much a new employee will cost over time which puts the cost of goods sold difficult to peg…the uncertainty relative to the corporate tax rates is also a chief concern…It is fair to say that demand is weak. I know several (self included) who can get more work but I won’t hire another employee if my personal tax rate is going to reduce my take home pay and result in my inflows becoming threatened by my outflows….Math is pretty clear.

Realizing that I’m coming into the conversation a bit late, I want to make a few points.
Point 1 – Whoever said you couldn’t be hoisted by your own petard obviously hasn’t ever read about them. It was quite common, back in the day when such things were used, for the person using it to have their arm or leg or whatever caught in the ropes they used to hoist the petard against the door of the castle they were trying to enter. Pulling them up with the bomb. Therefore, they were hoisted by their own petard.
Point 2 – USinUK – You said Newt shouldn’t have “leadership” (and I’m extrapolating the other uses/derivations of the word “leader” from your statement) used in a sentence when referring to him. I disagree. For example – Newt showed great leadership in starting the line at the buffet. Or Newt was able to lead us all to the buffet. Unfortunately in both of those cases, we come out the losers as with him in the lead, we’ll all starve.
Point 3 – Karma is a very nasty and vindictive woman. Newt should know better than to mess with a woman scorned, he’s had plenty of experience in that.

That’s what some people don’t want to know about capitalism – some businesses work out and some close their doors. It’s the natural order of things. Money (both bank investment and customer dollars) go to businesses that meet a demand. Once a business stops meeting demand, they go out of business (unless they get a bailout from the fed.)
Sometimes it hurts, and that’s what people don’t want to acknowledge about capitalism.

Indeed, and this is strictly because in a temporal trajectory Obama finds himself further along on a downward slope moving away from the New Deal, the ‘mixed economy’, Weirdly, of course, Barack Obama (in)famously voiced his admiration for Reagan during his campaign as a transformational president, leading (cynically?) his supporters to believe that he might have in mind a similar transformation for his own administration — namely a reversal of the Reaganite transformation. In fact however Obama has been anything but transformational, continuing and reinforcing in every imaginable way the very same changes set in motion by Reagan.

And it’s that same system that has sustained his country for the last 200 or more years. It has made us who we are, the most viable, thriving economy in the entire world. But your boy in the WH isn’t too fond of a free market economy, or so it would appear. And government running a business? We have seen how that works with Government Motors, the Postal Service, Amtrak and various others that government couldn’t keep their hands off of. So now we translate all of this into a government run system that sets up rules under which they can operate, tells them what and how much to produce and limits their profits based on the “needs of others”. Yeah, that’s what made this country the great country that it is….. no doubt about it. But it creates a hell-of-a voter base, now don’t it?

I think right now, our economy running around in a giant circle chasing its own tail. Companies aren’t hiring cause they don’t have the demand to support new employees (contrary to what many would have you believe), then those companies, because they’re not making extra money aren’t buying from other companies, who then aren’t hiring cause they don’t have the extra demand to support new employees. Then those companies aren’t buying from others, and they’re not buying from others, and eventually, you get back to the guy not buying from the first company who wasn’t hiring cause of lack of demand. Unfortunately (and those of you who know my views will understand how much it took for me to get here) the only solution I see is the government infusing more money into the economy someway some how. I say this cause the government is the only entity that typically buys without demand. Possibly because they’re the only entity that can legally take your money from you whether you want their product or not at the threat of jail, so they have a pretty guaranteed revenue stream, but I digress. Oh, and that is my circular logic for today, and I’m sorry for anyone who becomes confused by it, I might have possibly confused myself a bit while writing it.

It has nothing to do with the fact that no one is buying what they are selling? Demand has nothing to do with it?”
That is the million dollar question……
I posted in response to corps sitting on big bucks……look behind the curtain…..it isn’t because they are growing/expanding/etc……many are making profits because they slashed expenses (employees) and are requiring those that remain to work 70/80 hour weeks….or fear losing their jobs. That is why some are sitting on big profits…..kind of kills the talking point.
And that doesn’t change the fact that the majority of corps are NOT sitting on record profits…..as mom and pop are the majority and are hanging on by their teeth. The next few months will be a big indicator……..seasonal help goes back on the street and folks clamp down to pay for Christmas until they get their windfall “refunds”.

tell me how I’m going to justify new hires if there exists a possibility that the cost of same may go up 20% plus in coming years and I can’t increase my billings by the same amount?
You can’t win if you don’t play. So if you don’t hire the personnel, you will never know, will you? I bet if you interview someone today and tell them there is no guarantee that they will be employed by you one or two years down the road, they probably wouldn’t bat an eye lash. It’s kind of a give, know what I mean?
But, since you are doing everyone a favor by not hiring them….

Sucks to be stuck defending Obama doesn’t it Jay?!! Keep tearing down everybody else, though, and maybe you can get all the other candidates to look bad enough that Obama doesn’t look quite as imcompetent as he is by comparison. If your D voters are dumb enough, that might just work. Again.
From the AJC… “Police in Georgia say a fast-food worker grabbed his gun and shot and killed a man suspected of robbing the restaurant near Savannah.”
Why is it the fast food worker isn’t given the “suspected of” or “alleged” qualifier like the thief is? If the dead guys disn’t rob the place, wouldn’t he be an “alleged” ciminal too?

ADAM,
Good question. The trend alone in healthcare is between 5 and 10% annual clip no matter how I adjust deductibles or co-pays. No matter what is said, I have no confidence that my costs will increase at a higher rate under OBAMACARE as no government program in the history of government will pay for itself as advertised (see 61 trillion in unfunded Medicare and SS) If my tax rate reverts to pre Bush cuts, those two alone will easily cover the 20%.
I’m a very small business so the math is easy….not sure about mega-employers..

The fact that Newt has come this far and may by in this race for the duration only shows how utterly sad the state of American politics has become. Think of Lincoln, FDR, IKE, JFK and then think of Gingrich. Get the picture? While the word karma may come to mind for some, the word hypocrisy seems more applicable. Newt’s words and behavior show a complete lack of class and character. Just what you would expect in today’s dumbed down America.

On the other hand, give it a few years, and the construction industry will turn itself around. All those houses that were built over the last 15 or so years, in those wonderful looking subdivisions all over the US will start falling apart, and will have to be either repaired or rebuilt. Or the people that lived in them will have to move to apartments and more of those will have to be built. So, the construction industry will come back, its just a matter of time.

LOL, I love all the leftist comments on here. What has PBO done? Record deficits, billion dollar stimulus that ran up debt while accomplishing nothing, and a health care law that no small business can afford.
When’s the economy going to take off? In Biden’s second term?
Liberalism never works, never will work. After the Soviet experiment, seems like people would learn from history, but they don’t. Plus all the anti-religious folks think they’re going to be blessed one day, after a lifetime of running interference against believers. Please hold your breathe for that one…
Yep, you Dims have all the answers. Where do I sign up?
Any of the GOP candidates are far from “clowns,” because they are not PBO, the mother of all clowns. Any Republican currently running would be better than any Dim you could name. Adam – To my understanding, the stimulus mostly just advanced the timeline of projects that were already in the works. While this may have been a good thing in the short term, I feel like it could have been better spent doing some research on new projects and advancing projects that were long-shots at best. My point being, if these projects were already in the works, it may have stimulated the construction companies that built the roads (I realize, of course that there were other than construction projects) and bridges, but if they were already designed, it cut out the engineers and architects that would have been involved had it been a previously un-thought-of project.

Adam – I was meaning more towards the bailouts with the picking winners and losers. A lot of what the stimulus did (that I could tell) was just either allow the federal government to pay completely for something they were already going to pay for partially, or speed up the time frame that the states got the money they were already applying for. I think if we expand the definition of “infrastructure” we could stimulate the entire economy. To a person like myself, infrastructure isn’t just roads and bridges, it is the post office, community schools, parks and all the other things that make neighborhoods desirable/livable. Realizing of course that business owners have to be responsible for the grocery store, hardware store and things of that nature.

Jay do despise the newtster he do.
Strange thing though is that I thought all the liberals were in full support of Newt winning the GOP nomination with the idea that Obama would fare better against Newt than any other GOP nominee. Romney is the guy that Obama fears due to the perception that Romney is a moderate. And Romney is the beneficiary of Newt getting slammed.
This is a another myth the libs are putting out. They are scared to death of Newt. They know the General public understands that Obama does not know anything about the economy and how to fix it and Newt would show that he also knows very little about government and the way it functions. If Newt won the nomination then they would have no talking points except for character and they themselves ruined a character fight with Clinton.

Amen. In fact, in future history books the era that began with the election of Ronald Reagan — which has reached its moment of truth in the aftermath of the great crash of 2007-8, the moment where it has to play for all the marbles or be rejected utterly — should be dubbed “The Era of Reaction”, where liberalism was the term that gathered together all those things the masses were being asked to reject. And reject they did, in great numbers – slowly asphyxiated themselves in the process.

I gotta watch anything with sharks too. I’ve seen video twice of great whites being savaged and eaten by orcas. One was of 2 orcas killing and devouring a great white off of New Zealand or Australia and another was a discovery channel special on great whites hunting seals off of the falleron islands. A group of orcas came in led by a large female named UB380 or something and of course she killed and ate the liver of a large great white. And as the narrator said “Curiously the other 12-15 great whites who regularly hunt the seals have left the area.” If you google orcas killing great whites you can probably pull up those 2 videos.

well given that the dems controlled the house when the ACA was debated and passed, and it was the Senate that took out the public option… I have no idea what point you’re trying to make, actually.
I guess you think that a government run health insurance program for people who don’t currently qualify for Medicare or Medicaid would be a bad thing. But the point is, such a program didn’t make it into the ACA, so what, exactly, was your point?

Kayaker – You gave an interesting list of companies started in the USA. All in technology fields. They could only start in the USA because the government funded the R & D that created those industries. In the first years of the computer industry the only customer was the US government – no private market existed. The internet was a product of government R & D. All of those companies and industries thrived because of government initiatives. After our government program (public, private, and educational systems involved) successfully landed a man on the moon, we attracted all the bright engineering students, since our programs were dominant.
So – no, those companies could not have started in any other country. However, if we continue to attack all government programs, that will not be true in the future.

Why should a candidate release personal tax records?
If it was of such vital importance to the electoral process, would not Congress have made it mandatory?
I don’t know if it’s of vital importance; all I know is, it’s been SOP for Presidential candidates in living memory to release this information, if my not-always-perfect memory is correct. So I’d imagine it Mitt or some other candidate makes a point of not releasing that information, it becomes an object of speculation.
That said, I was just rooting around in an FEC explanation of public matching funds…

I didn’t see anything in there requiring a candidate to release income tax records to qualify for matching funds.

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America ’s debt limit.” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. 2006

Also maybe, he thinks he can now charge more to be a “historian.” Why do all the Tea Party Crazies ignore the fact it is the other Republicans are the ones attacking him. And the right wing loves to label any one that questions them a “liberal.” Who cares about their name calling and shoddy thinking? The Tea Party Republicans in the House are incapable of governing as they are so out of step with the majority of mainstream Americans. That is why the Dems will keep the Senate. I think we can all agree that health insurance premiums have indeed been going up for years but the most recent increases seemed to be steeper than usual. And if new coverages are mandated then of course premiums will necessarily have to rise. No way around that. The only reason rates haven’t increased even more is because the health plans are waiting to see the legal result of whether ACA stands or not when it goes before the scotus. If it stands then I think rates will most certainly rise from everything I’ve been reading on it.

(Disclaimer, the “you” in here is a general “you” for anyone seeking transcripts and further info) After getting the transcripts, then, you will need even more information. Is that right? You will drill into the background and general teachings of every single professor, and assume that Obama bought all the lines and never made up his mind against any of them? It would be like this whole Reverend Wright thing all over again, where a single sermon is determined to be something Obama practically said and believed himself for 20+ years.

It means the basic belief that workers should share in business profits, as opposed to those profits going preponderantly to business owners and executives. Which was the case until the crisis of the “Fordist” model of capitalism in the 1970s.

As productivity has steadily risen since the 1970s, worker compensation has remained flat.

For example, the Pentagon is tangible. The DoD is not. The DoD is an intangible department that lays CLAIM to the Pentagon.
Another reason I might not make sense to you on the money issue is because you have bought into the belief that it is something of supreme value.

Ok I’ll take that one.
I for one believe Obama and Gingrich to be roughly equals in the area of intelligence. For what it’s worth. But, again, for me book intelligence is just one component of leadership in an era of turmoil and crisis.

Thulsa: Professor, State Senator, US Senator. The only reason you do not consider those accomplishments is because you simply don’t want to give that kind of credit to the man. They would be accomplishments for anyone on the GOP side, and you would probably concede them as accomplishments for most anyone BUT Obama on the Democrat side.

Good thing Axelrod/Plouffe don’t send emails to their minions recommending catch phrases like “corporate jet owners”, “millionaires and billionaires” , and “supporting the middle class.” Of course the middle class is kind of a moving target in the eyes of the Obama administration. His poll numbers are going down across all demographics simply because the policies of the past three years have not worked and Americans recognise that another four years of Big Government out of control spending is dangerous. Even if Obama wins, more than likely the GOP will gain control of the Senate and maintain the House. Ben Nelson’s retirement announcement this week is another example of a seasoned politician throwing in the towel because he realizes that he can’t get reelected supporting the Obama platform.

I don’t think that the ads are negative. They are just the truth. The subject matter is the problem here and the subject matter is not presidential material. No way in hell that guy should even be running with his record. Evidently Newt isn’t happy with the life he has lead and can’t stand to see it flashed back in front of him He should just stop wasting money (who’s is it anyway?) and our time and go home. To be a prominent professor of history he should know that his past would be present in the campaign. Okay maybe a revisionist historian.

Was not aware there was such a thing, but still, there isn’t one called “Languages” right? And what about magna cum laude with a law degree says anything other than “US Law”? Are people afraid what he really studied at Harvard was “Sharia Law?”
So, the graduate program in Polish Studies shouldn’t want to know what history courses I took?
I guess I don’t know enough about Polish studies to know why this would be relevant, except that academia ALWAYS asks for transcripts.

Miz Dusty – I’m with you. Instead of attempting to be a responsible journalist, Bookie just tries to incite, insult, rabble rouse, etc. And for all of us, on both sides, who complain about DC not being able to get along, look at some of the back and forth on this blog today. Josef, Adam, Granny, Stands, Thulsa, Reneck, Dusty, and others, it’s been fun and even educational trading views. But I said yesterday that I was through insulting and name calling, but unfortunately, that seems to be what’s in fashion so how can we blame DC for what we ourselves do? Now, if we were able to have rationale discourse, respond to facts with counter-facts, etc., and do away with the juvenile insulting, then perhaps we could expect DC to do the same. Sad state of the world my friends. A dad, signing off. Best wishes in 2012.
And AJC, I won’t be reading Bookman’s column anymore, which means I won’t be viewing any of the ads on his pages either. Shame. I’d like to think he could be a fairly decent journalist one day if he could write more objectively.

So you think poor children should not learn about having a work ethic? How else are they going to break the cycle of poverty? Rich and middle class children learn the work ethic at home from watching their parents get up every morning and go to work. They learn that sometimes one must sacrifice the vacation or the weekend ballgame because dad or mom has to work. Where are the poor getting these life lessons from?

Besides thugish there is nothing you said not to be proud of and I am sure Newt would agree with most of them.
Let us compare the opposite, which is what I am assuming is what Obama is:
Lily livered coward, Arab loving, Israel hater. He is part of the crowd that wants the Islamic terrorist to control the middle east and would rather squander American prosperity with a total welfare, redistributed country.

td: Rich and middle class children learn the work ethic at home from watching their parents get up every morning and go to work
Correction, that applies to POOR and middle class children, because poor people work a LOT MORE than rich people. Many rich people with children are currently sitting pretty in retirement, frequenting casinos or sitting in their home office looking at their investment portfolios. The rich kids DO NOT learn the value of work that way. They think all they have to do is ask daddy for money.
Poor and middle class kids do not have this luxury. They get told they need to earn their own money a heck of a lot more often than rich kids. If you really think otherwise, well, you made the assertion first. I’d like to see some evidence.
