Poor Newt Gingrich, hoisted by his own petard in Iowa

112911-newt-gingrich-ap_606-1Newt Gingrich’s campaign has apparently gone into freefall in Iowa, to the point that the recent frontrunner has been reduced to musing publicly that a fifth-place finish wouldn’t be so bad. Millions of dollars of negative campaigning aimed in his direction has put a torpedo right in his ample midship.

Newt has complained bitterly about the tactic, calling the attacks “reprehensible” and claiming that the candidates who use them “ought to be ashamed of themselves” and that it “demeans America.” Personally, though, I think there’s a certain poetry in the fact that Gingrich has come undone in such a fashion.

After all, his fellow Republicans are merely using what someone once called “contrasting words,” “powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast.” That certain someone even created a list of such words, urging his followers to “apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.”

On the vocabulary list drafted by that certain someone and recommended for deployment in politics are many of the words now being directed at Gingrich by members of his own party, and apparently with devastating effect. For example:

abuse of power
betray
bizarre
cheat
coercion
collapse(ing)
corrupt
corruption
cynicism
decay
destroy
destructive
devour
disgrace
endanger
excuses
failure (fail)
greed
hypocrisy
ideological
impose
incompetent
insecure
insensitive
intolerant
liberal
lie
mandate(s)
obsolete
pathetic
radical
self-serving
selfish
sensationalists
shallow
shame
sick
steal
threaten
traitors
waste

Watching all this happen, another word comes to mind, a word that isn’t on that certain someone’s list. That word is karma.

“You cannot have it both ways. You want Obama to certify his education and give the idiots below a pass”

Where the hell did I say that?

Oy! I think ANYbody running for the top position in my country should release those transcripts. Do I think he should be required to, no, I don’t. Do I think he’s “hiding” anything? No, I don’t. Do I accept the reality that the accolades he garnered speak to his intelligence and comptency? Of course.

I have a resume and a curriculum vitae. If somebody wants (needs) to see my curriculum vitae after scanning the resume, I send it to them. Mine are private only insofar as those whom I am trying to get to bring me on board are in the private arena. Were I in the public, then, they should be public.

td: “Could you please define “shared prosperity”?”

It means the basic belief that workers should share in business profits, as opposed to those profits going preponderantly to business owners and executives. Which was the case until the crisis of the “Fordist” model of capitalism in the 1970s.

See BLS statistics e.g. here:

http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2011/01/art3full.pdf
http://epi.3cdn.net/3b7a1c34747d141327_4dm6bx8ni.pdf

Or HuffPo has historical graph ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/18/wages-productivity-report_n_837814.html) :

As productivity has steadily risen since the 1970s, worker compensation has remained flat.

In other words, the share of the pie going to those who already have wealth is drastically increasing at the expense of those labor for a living.

Thulsa: So the fact that the government uses tax money to buy warships makes the construct of the US government tangible, and therefore makes money tangible?

I think the reason you think I don’t make sense is because you really don’t understand that the government is intangible, and only the figures and “stuff” that is laid claim to by officials in the government is what is tangible. For example, the Pentagon is tangible. The DoD is not. The DoD is an intangible department that lays CLAIM to the Pentagon.

Another reason I might not make sense to you on the money issue is because you have bought into the belief that it is something of supreme value.

Good thing Axelrod/Plouffe don’t send emails to their minions recommending catch phrases like “corporate jet owners”, “millionaires and billionaires” , and “supporting the middle class.” Of course the middle class is kind of a moving target in the eyes of the Obama administration. His poll numbers are going down across all demographics simply because the policies of the past three years have not worked and Americans recognise that another four years of Big Government out of control spending is dangerous. Even if Obama wins, more than likely the GOP will gain control of the Senate and maintain the House. Ben Nelson’s retirement announcement this week is another example of a seasoned politician throwing in the towel because he realizes that he can’t get reelected supporting the Obama platform.

Instead of attempting to be a responsible journalist, Bookie just tries to incite, insult, rabble rouse, etc. And for all of us, on both sides, who complain about DC not being able to get along, look at some of the back and forth on this blog today. Josef, Adam, Granny, Stands, Thulsa, Reneck, Dusty, and others, it’s been fun and even educational trading views. But I said yesterday that I was through insulting and name calling, but unfortunately, that seems to be what’s in fashion so how can we blame DC for what we ourselves do? Now, if we were able to have rationale discourse, respond to facts with counter-facts, etc., and do away with the juvenile insulting, then perhaps we could expect DC to do the same. Sad state of the world my friends. A dad, signing off. Best wishes in 2012.

@td. Since when do rich kids learn the value of work. On which planet do you live? One only has to look at the silver spoon fed, former drunk we had for the previous President to see through this bs. I guess some Republicans are so deluded that they believe if they tell a lue often enough, it will become the truth. Doesn’t happen in the Internet age! GW will go down in history as one of the worst Presidents in history. Too bad it took him so long to stand up to Darth Vader, oops I meant DICK Cheney!

Newt is first and foremost a hypocritical windbag who will say or do anything to sell books and get consulting fees.

td: Rich and middle class children learn the work ethic at home from watching their parents get up every morning and go to work

Correction, that applies to POOR and middle class children, because poor people work a LOT MORE than rich people. Many rich people with children are currently sitting pretty in retirement, frequenting casinos or sitting in their home office looking at their investment portfolios. The rich kids DO NOT learn the value of work that way. They think all they have to do is ask daddy for money.

Poor and middle class kids do not have this luxury. They get told they need to earn their own money a heck of a lot more often than rich kids. If you really think otherwise, well, you made the assertion first. I’d like to see some evidence.

Newt is so desperate that he thinks that crying will get him votes. I guess this is a GOP speaker of the house trademark- just like Boehner. I hear next he is going to beg his ex-wives for forgiveness.
