Newt Gingrich’s campaign has apparently gone into freefall in Iowa, to the point that the recent frontrunner has been reduced to musing publicly that a fifth-place finish wouldn’t be so bad. Millions of dollars of negative campaigning aimed in his direction has put a torpedo right in his ample midship.
Newt has complained bitterly about the tactic, calling the attacks “reprehensible” and claiming that the candidates who use them “ought to be ashamed of themselves” and that it “demeans America.” Personally, though, I think there’s a certain poetry in the fact that Gingrich has come undone in such a fashion.
After all, his fellow Republicans are merely using what someone once called “contrasting words,” “powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast.” That certain someone even created a list of such words, urging his followers to “apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.”
On the vocabulary list drafted by that certain someone and recommended for deployment in politics are many of the words now being directed at Gingrich by members of his own party, and apparently with devastating effect. For example:
abuse of power
betray
bizarre
cheat
coercion
collapse(ing)
corrupt
corruption
cynicism
decay
destroy
destructive
devour
disgrace
endanger
excuses
failure (fail)
greed
hypocrisy
ideological
impose
incompetent
insecure
insensitive
intolerant
liberal
lie
mandate(s)
obsolete
pathetic
radical
self-serving
selfish
sensationalists
shallow
shame
sick
steal
threaten
traitors
waste
Watching all this happen, another word comes to mind, a word that isn’t on that certain someone’s list. That word is karma.
– Jay Bookman

You don’t think this will be back in with a dem controlled house?
well given that the dems controlled the house when the ACA was debated and passed, and it was the Senate that took out the public option… I have no idea what point you’re trying to make, actually.
I guess you think that a government run health insurance program for people who don’t currently qualify for Medicare or Medicaid would be a bad thing. But the point is, such a program didn’t make it into the ACA, so what, exactly, was your point?
(and for what it’s worth, a single-payer insurance program akin to what they have in Canada is probably the best thing America could do for its business community.)
and what the heck, long as I’m having a bit of fun here:
Or the coverage for illegals that was also taken out?
ok, I’ll bite, what “coverage for illegals” are you talking about?

I’m sure that the poor fish that sharks brutally attack and eat ask the same question of themselves.

No. The people didn’t *send* in the dog. Dogs just bark at things they don’t understand and or fear. Its what they do. They’re dogs. Sheesh.

Money doesn’t “run out” because money is not tied to anything tangible. It is a completely made-up construct that we all accept because it’s supposedly simple, and we all have this idea in our heads that in the end, everyone owes someone else something.

Kayaker – You gave an interesting list of companies started in the USA. All in technology fields. They could only start in the USA because the government funded the R & D that created those industries. In the first years of the computer industry the only customer was the US government – no private market existed. The internet was a product of government R & D. All of those companies and industries thrived because of government initiatives. After our government program (public, private, and educational systems involved) successfully landed a man on the moon, we attracted all the bright engineering students, since our programs were dominant.
So – no, those companies could not have started in any other country. However, if we continue to attack all government programs, that will not be true in the future.

I don’t know if it’s of vital importance; all I know is, it’s been SOP for Presidential candidates in living memory to release this information, if my not-always-perfect memory is correct. So I’d imagine it Mitt or some other candidate makes a point of not releasing that information, it becomes an object of speculation.
That said, I was just rooting around in an FEC explanation of public matching funds…

I agree with what you say, but that’s still no reason not to do it. Biden and Bush did and they knew that theirs would be trotted out for, well, comment! And being magna cum laude and A’s pretty much say you knew how to parrot the line. I’m interested in what the parrot, obviously a bright one, said…
If someone comes to me applying for a position, I would NEED to know what courses they took and what they made of the information imparted there…

@josef December 29th, 2011 12:48 pm – Personally, I think Obama should release his transcripts…

You cannot have it both ways. You want Obama to certify his education and give the idiots below a pass.
If Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich release their transcripts we might have a rational discussion.
I bet you Obama is smarter than that bunch of idiots COMBINED!

Maybe he’s trying to protect the image of Harvard University. Yeah, that’s the ticket. If it ever got out that just anyone could go there, graduate with honors and be elected President of the Harvard Law Review, the scandal would be unbearable. I have an idea, why don’t YOU try applying for Harvard and see how far you get.

Thulsa,
I know you yearn ever so much for attention and so long as you post silly comments that I spot and wish to reply to, you can have a little. Otherwise, you’ll have to settle on your mirror for all the attention you feel you deserve.

Butch Cassidy,
I think we can all agree that health insurance premiums have indeed been going up for years but the most recent increases seemed to be steeper than usual. And if new coverages are mandated then of course premiums will necessarily have to rise. No way around that. The only reason rates haven’t increased even more is because the health plans are waiting to see the legal result of whether ACA stands or not when it goes before the scotus. If it stands then I think rates will most certainly rise from everything I’ve been reading on it.

The “if you have nothing to hide…” argument? How about you release your own long form, short form, and all college transcripts to the general public. If you have no problem with that, show them right here. If you have nothing to hide, that is….

If grades were a top priority for president why are these idiots running (Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich)?

Well, I don’t like the turn this blog is taking. If the President of the U.S. of A. can be made to release his transcripts, what’s to keep every boss from demanding that his workers release theirs? I don’t want my boss to see my grades, especially in arithmetic. I already said my senior year was the 5th grade. That ought to be good enough. Dang multiplying tables!

(Disclaimer, the “you” in here is a general “you” for anyone seeking transcripts and further info) After getting the transcripts, then, you will need even more information. Is that right? You will drill into the background and general teachings of every single professor, and assume that Obama bought all the lines and never made up his mind against any of them? It would be like this whole Reverend Wright thing all over again, where a single sermon is determined to be something Obama practically said and believed himself for 20+ years.
This proves, though, that handing out the transcripts is useless. It’s like trying to find something, anything that will prove a pre-conclusion of some kind.
