Poor Newt Gingrich, hoisted by his own petard in Iowa

112911-newt-gingrich-ap_606-1Newt Gingrich’s campaign has apparently gone into freefall in Iowa, to the point that the recent frontrunner has been reduced to musing publicly that a fifth-place finish wouldn’t be so bad. Millions of dollars of negative campaigning aimed in his direction has put a torpedo right in his ample midship.

Newt has complained bitterly about the tactic, calling the attacks “reprehensible” and claiming that the candidates who use them “ought to be ashamed of themselves” and that it “demeans America.” Personally, though, I think there’s a certain poetry in the fact that Gingrich has come undone in such a fashion.

After all, his fellow Republicans are merely using what someone once called “contrasting words,” “powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contrast.” That certain someone even created a list of such words, urging his followers to “apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals and their party.”

On the vocabulary list drafted by that certain someone and recommended for deployment in politics are many of the words now being directed at Gingrich by members of his own party, and apparently with devastating effect. For example:

abuse of power
betray
bizarre
cheat
coercion
collapse(ing)
corrupt
corruption
cynicism
decay
destroy
destructive
devour
disgrace
endanger
excuses
failure (fail)
greed
hypocrisy
ideological
impose
incompetent
insecure
insensitive
intolerant
liberal
lie
mandate(s)
obsolete
pathetic
radical
self-serving
selfish
sensationalists
shallow
shame
sick
steal
threaten
traitors
waste

Watching all this happen, another word comes to mind, a word that isn’t on that certain someone’s list. That word is karma.

They need to boster their self esteem. They know that their field is not what they wanted. They also know after the Bush debacle, no one of any substance decided not to enter the race. I wonder if Tim Palenty is kicking himself for getting out of the race too early.

So it’s better that crippled companies limp along and eventually go under, tossing lots of folks out of jobs than it is to take over a failing company, get rid of the diseased part, put the company on a course to success so it can grow and expand and create more jobs?

There’s a lot of qualifiers behind the talking points.

Has it occurred to anyone that people in Iowa just love this kind of attention? What else do they have outside of a straw poll in August and a presidential caucus every 4 years? The fact that they are first is meaningless if you consider that at least half of the electorate will cast their vote based on what they heard in a 30 second sound bite approximately 24 hours before entering the polling place. Let’s give it a rest already.

If Romney wins the nominations (and does not pick a gimmick VP), his record as Governor of Mass will be the most relevant item to me.

I was a bit surprised to see how his job approval withered during his last couple of years as Gov.

I also believe that if he gets the nomination and embraces, rather than abdicates, his healthcare accomplishment that he will win.

Hoist “with” or “upon” but not “by”

Once again the intelligence of the editorial writers shines dimly:

The word petard comes from the Middle French peter, to break wind, from pet expulsion of intestinal gas, from Latin peditum, from neuter of peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind; akin to Greek bdein to break wind. (Merriam-Webster) Petard remains a French word meaning a firecracker today (in French slang, it means a handgun, or a joint).

The word remains in modern usage in the phrase hoist with one’s own petard, which means “to be harmed by one’s own plan to harm someone else” or “to fall into one’s own trap,” literally implying that one could be lifted up (hoist, or blown upward) by one’s own bomb.

Thanks again Jay for your astute observation of yet another GOP candidate. It just seems that there is no one amongst this group of Republicans that are qualified to be president.

Wait a minute…I get lost in the rhetoric of this blog site. I regretably loose sight of the fact that you are a liberal, preach to a liberal audience, and enjoy the collective lunatic ideas of your political party. Is it any wonder that you and your blog club have voted for immoral liars and inexperienced community organizers to represent the office of the president. Therefore, pragmatic people and common sense people take you guys with a grain of salt and swallow your rhetoric with a healthy dose of lubricant.

No matter who you demean and rail against, the fact remains that any one of these candidates are a far better choice for president than the one you voted for and are trying to defend. His record speaks for himself. The congressional Democrats (Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Boxer, Schumer, Frank, Franken, etc.) lead the pack in kook ideology.

We have historical debt on account of the above lunatics. Your Democrat Senate has failed to pass a balanced budget in over 900 days. This group proudly proclaims cost cutting initiatives from the House as DOA before it even arrives on the Senate floor. It’s their way or no way. Pathetic.

There is no serious thought to the idea of reduced spending. There is no serious thought to the idea of curtailed borrowing. There is no responsibility in fiscal management. You spend like drunken sailors. Is it any wonder business owners won’t invest when there is uncertainty in their future?

We have ideas, but you Democrats have none. You Democrats have nothing to offer but cheesy 2 month plans of kicking the can down the road and ripping the good intentions of your political opponents.

Get on board or get out of the way.

These companies didn’t all go bad over night just because Wall St had a sell off.

And to clarify, SOME corporations are sitting on big profits…….but it is hardly the majority. The mom and pops make up the majority, and they aren’t doing quite as well.

“These companies didn’t all go bad over night just because Wall St had a sell off.”

nor have they all recovered because people took advantage of cheap prices.

as for the mom-and-pops, who did YOU do your Cmas shopping with??? Amazon or the shop on the corner?

Right now, workers are doing the work of 3-5 people because of cut backs. Businesses COULD respect the need for humans to get some rest and have less stress in order to do better work, OR they could focus on how much money they are saving by forcing people to do tons more work than they used to at reduced cost.
I’m speechless

F. Sinkwich: We know O’bozo wants energy costs to “necessarily skyrocket” which he his accomplishing through the EPA.

And that’s why gas prices dropped recently and have stayed at or below $3/gallon for a while!

Of the dozens of conservative posters that once contributed here, I’m pretty sure that no one considers themself a martyr. That would imply that we are missing something.

But I see that you are still here. Every day.

Think of what you could have done with the months of time that you have spent here.

But when you believe such complete nonsense as is posted here, you need to know that you aren’t the only one, and good old Jay will eventually get rid of all vioces that don’t agree. Its the liberal way. Burn the books. Silence the opposition.

Liberalism makes a lot of sense if no one complians.

So a young entrepreneur has an idea that will net $10 million a year. He goes to the bank to borrow the money to put his plan in place. Banker says “sure”, and agrees to it because that’s what bankers do – they find opportunities that will make their bank profits on interest.

The young entrepreneur then decides it’s too risky – with democrats in the white house and all – and decides to not start the business .

What does the banker do? He b*t@# slaps the young entrepreneur and cancels the loan – because now he knows this idiot could never run a business successfully.

And all those businesses are in trouble because of Obama and regulations?

It has nothing to do with the fact that no one is buying what they are selling? Demand has nothing to do with it?

Ladies and gentlemen, here are your future business leaders!

Only if they get collateral to cover the loan. Bankers are not venture capitalists.

“SFD – Pelosi got a two million dollar grant to study the Salt Marsh Harvest mouse (or something like that) in the SFBay area.”

two things. ok, three actually

a) I was asking Donovan to define something “kooky” not you, but that’s ok

b) that “salt marsh mouse” business had been debunked ages ago,
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/feb/13/mike-pence/no-money-stimulus-san-francisco-mice/
and

c) none of this has anything to do with Al Franken, who is often cited as some kind of radical nutter, yet any time I’ve ever heard or seen or read him, he sounds like the centrist Democrat he’s always been

Businesses aren’t hiring for a couple of reasons the most significant being the inability to assess exactly how much a new employee will cost over time which puts the cost of goods sold difficult to peg…the uncertainty relative to the corporate tax rates is also a chief concern…It is fair to say that demand is weak. I know several (self included) who can get more work but I won’t hire another employee if my personal tax rate is going to reduce my take home pay and result in my inflows becoming threatened by my outflows….Math is pretty clear.
