On state DNR board, no future for a ‘green conservative’

Warren Budd, the vice chairman of the state Board of Natural Resources, calls himself a “green conservative” and claims there are a lot of people like him.

A lifelong active Republican, the insurance agent from Newnan is also an avid outdoorsman. “I care about conservation, and I care about this state,” he said in an interview last week. “I represent the average guy who likes to fish and hunt. This is a beautiful state, and I like to think that there will be something of it left for our grandchildren to enjoy.”

However, even though he was in line to become chair of the 18-member DNR board next year, Budd has been informed that he will not be reappointed when his seven-year term ends on Jan. 1. According to Budd, a “green conservative” point of view is no longer welcome by Gov. Nathan Deal, who wants no dissent from a pro-development agenda that favors special interests.

“”They are very into message-control,” Budd said. “They don’t want board members to act like a board.”

Budd acknowledges that as a DNR board member, he pushed the state Environmental Protection Division to move more aggressively in dealing with a major fishkill on the Ogeechee River in May. Tens of thousands of fish were killed along an 80-mile stretch of river, and an investigation traced the cause back to King America Finishing, a textile plant that had been dumping flame-retardant chemicals into the river for as long as five years, undetected and without a permit.

In the end, the company agreed to spend $1 million on environmental projects in the Ogeechee watershed, a small price to pay considering the nature of its violation and the fact it could have been fined more than $90 million. The settlement was strongly criticized by environmentalists, outdoorsmen and civic leaders in the Ogeechee watershed as too lenient.

“We talk about protecting business, but I talked to one bait-shop owner whose business was down 70 percent because of that fishkill,” Budd said. “He’s a businessman too, and he wasn’t alone. A lot of people who make their living off that river were hurt.”

According to Budd, the DNR board has been told it can no longer elect its own officers, and instead those officers will be named by the governor. Deal’s top spokesman, Brian Robinson, says that the board remains free to elect its own officers, but that “several board members have asked the governor for his opinion.” According to Robinson, the governor wants to appoint board members “who are excited team players ready to carry out his agenda for our state.”

“Some are reappointments, some fill openings and some are replacements,” Robinson said. “It’s part of the process. It allows new blood, new ideas and new people a chance to serve the state on a volunteer basis. If anyone on any board considers himself indispensable, this is what educators call a ‘teachable moment.’ It takes an eyebrow-raising amount of self-regard for someone to suggest publicly that, out of 10 million Georgians, only he or she brings a diverse viewpoint to a board.”

While Budd is complimentary to his fellow DNR board members, the truth is that the 18-member panel charged with protecting the state’s environment has long been dominated by developers, real estate interests and business people, with conservationists and environmentalists all but excluded.

For example, Aaron McWhorter, appointed to the board by Deal in May, sells “mitigation credits” that allow wetlands to be destroyed for construction projects, housing developments and, just by happenstance, major reservoir projects. Budd, on the other hand, has expressed doubts about the governor’s plan to build major new reservoirs in north Georgia, noting that such projects destroy miles of streams and rivers. And he believes that the decision not to reappoint him means that such sentiments will no longer be tolerated.

“Governor [Zell] Miller, [Roy] Barnes and [Sonny] Perdue all had diverse boards,” Budd said. “Moving toward a monolithic board is not healthy in a state of 10 million people with all of these competing interests.”

considering she’s paying for it and it supports the local economy (as well as the national economy), good for her! Me, all I can afford is the occasional high tea or cocktail at the Four Seasons.

Yes. I’m doing it now. There’s this thing called “multi-tasking” and the concept that I am allowed to do this at the same time as other work so long as it doesn’t affect my performance.

Not that you REALLY needed to know any of that, but since you are a step away from signing up with the “lives in mom’s basement collecting Soros checks and welfare and food stamps” crowd, I figured I would say this, AGAIN.

“So why do think the people of Georgia keep voting for corrupt money-grubbers who protect polluters instead of those who would prosecute them to a more effective extent?”- Matti

Matti,

Heck we really don’t have much of a choice. Look at last election. Both Deal and Barnes are crooks. Deal looks like he’s owned by various business interests and Barnes is owned by trial lawyers. And both parties are owned by various business interests.

“Why do they keep vilifying environmentalists and conservationists”?- Matti

In this case I think Deal is obviously wrong to not include a single person to counter the developer and real estate interests. But I would be wary also of people who are professional environmentalists who don’t have a regular day job. As a college student I worked with one environmentalist group in fundraising. Biggest bunch of crooks I ever saw. I prefer the opinions of everyday citizens who live and use the local streams and rivers over professional agitators. This guy obviously would have been a great panelist and from what I’ve seen the people who give a damn the most are typically hunters, fisherman, kayakers, hikers, people that actually have a stake in things.

Stevie Ray one last thought, the middle like the sides are mixed with left and right. I believe the right has a tenancy to be more predictable in their answers, more locked stepped if you will. I am in the middle and not a liberal, have voted for both parties. If I paint the right with a board bush it is the nature of the right. There is no question given them that most of us do not know their answer before the question is asked. They pride themselves in this and it may cost Mitt an election because he thinks instead of is a robot. Out of the many candidates he is the only one with a different view.

Sooth,

China and Asia in general are a couple of generations behind us not just in scrubber technology for cleaning emissions but also just in giving a damn about environmental damage.

BTW that reminds me of a little health tip I saw in the local news one evening. Many of the farm raised sea life that comes from Asia-China, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. is heavily tainted with known carcinogens long banned in the U.S. The Asian farmers lace the stock with these chemicals to produce about a 20% higher yield in farm raised catfish, shrimp, and various other farm raised sea products. Only 1% of these stocks are inspected here in the U.S. and turned away so it makes business sense for them to do the spraying and get the extra yield if only 1% of their product is turned away by the FDA. Now I think that is in Georgia and many other states but if I remember correctly I think Alabama inspects every shipment that comes in. I still wouldn’t take a chance on it though. Its wild fish for me or none at all. And no sea products from Asia.

Air quality in the U.S. in the 40s through the 60s used to look really bad although probably never as bad as China. Go back and look at some pics of the skylines of cities such as ATL, Birmingham, and Pittsburgh from the 60s and you will see huge black clouds of pollution over many industrial cities. The new EPA regulations of the 70s and beyond have made our water and air quality the cleanest its been in decades despite increased economic production.

kayaker 71 where you miss the boat is thinking the 99 are after the 1% that have money. What is bluntly clear is a good percentage of that 1% have done nothing to deserve that money. They have rigged the game. Crimes go uncontested. A poor minority can go to jail easier for stealing a banana than those in the 1% for stealing millions or just not producing what they are paid to produce kind of the same thing. I was reading the other day a argument on why the economy is not in inflation with the printing of so much money. The answer from the right was that circulation of this new money is so slow it does not allow the laws of economics to take effect. And why is the circulation so slow? Because the rich have taken it out of play like a private central bank. Laws of economics do not work when new components are introduced into the theories. Up to a decade or so ago this private reservoir of money didn’t exist.

If Steve Jobs were still alive you would find he as a creative and talented person would be by nature pouring his money back into the economy with fresh and productive ideas. You will find the Madoffs of the world who have no productivity have a tenancy to sit on their money which humorously makes laundering it much more efficient. The world Madoff served were widows and retired people of little productivity demanding a return ,and as evidence showed, had little knowledge of where their money went. This is where unearned bonuses come from, not far from the structure of Madoff. Eventually if the economy is working right someone is punished for none productivity. In this case it is the 99%. The 1% hoard it cash because it is afraid of the schemers, the overvalued stocks, and since they have no ability on their own to create. They keep it from the real economic machine of this country the middle class, we all suffer. Taxing the rich at least puts some of this money back into circulation. The way it is now a rich family is better off putting the money in a cave and never coming out of that cave in a lifetime. These are relative new conditions and certainly are not designed for the conservative antiqued thinking of the populist movement.

No. That’s not why inflation has not reared its ugly head. The rich have constantly taken money and parked it on the sidelines whether in munis, CDs, or just parking it in money market funds. It may have been taken out of M1 money supply but generally stays in M2 or M3 money supply. The laws of economics still apply. And the rich have taken money out of M1 circulation plenty of times in history. We can go all the way back to the 1920s to see this.

Peter,

Out of the various wars and blood that has been shed in the history of mankind over religion you choose to focus on a broomfight between some Christians and use it to put in a political rant about right wing crazies? I’m just saying if you want to rant about religious zealots and craziness your time would be better spent focusing on the recent Muslim bombings against Christian churches on Christmas day in Nigeria. Or the extermination of coptic Christians in Egypt perhaps or Christians in Iraq.

If Nathan Deal had to eat the stuff in Lake Lanier or in the Ogeechee River, I can guarantee you those waters would be the cleanest around. However, I have it on good authority that his fresh food is of the highest quality. It’s a luxury that the 1 percenters can well afford (even if it’s the 99 percenters picking up the tab). As for what your kids get fed in school, well, some things are better left untold.

USinUK,

Our agreements probably won’t last for long. But in the meantime just make sure you’re sitting down and don’t have a gulp of soda or coffee in your mouth when you read a Doomy post.

In relation to the first link (the second one? Not sure what you meant there), I’ve been following this one. Theirs is an Orthodox response and 1) is at odds with the Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist interpretations, and 2) is in reaction to recent moves by the Orthodox themselves to reevaluation the stance. Theirs is a minority viewpoint within the religious Jewish community and, while I disagree with them, is nonetheless within their purview as interpreters of the more conservative elements.

Thulsa Doom . I agree Religion is all about a using it for your special purpose, and since there are so many religions, each group uses it for their own gain.

Example…… George Bush used it to attack Iraq.

Folks like Bill Orvis White, use it to put down the less fortunate, and to push a right wing agenda.

“Do they think they are the “real Israelis” and want to “get their country back”?”

No. They are opposed to the concept of the Israeli state. They, do, though, think they are the “real” Jews and it is their perogative and theirs alone to define what that is. They are our Taliban…

Brocephus,

thanks for the link. I hope everyone reads it. I had been eating the albacore tuna anyway but I had forgotten about the high level of mercury in tuna and besides that I thought it was more in Pacific tuna than Atlantic tuna. Tuna is being dangerously overharvested. I’ll read the rest of that link shortly but in addition to tuna I think there are a few other fish- swordfish I know is one, that have high levels of mercury in their fatty tissues.

Thank you.

As to the second one ………… that Pediatrician organization is calling on schools to stay out of the orientation of their students as this can be a confusing time in their lives requiring “expert” help and not that of a teacher or counselor who may be biased.
