No, Obama didn’t humiliate House GOP. They did it themselves.

I could, I suppose, write some 3,000-word essay about the capitulation of the House GOP and how it burnishes President Obama’s reputation as a leader, and how it will make things difficult for Republican leadership when they are forced to revisit the issues again in two months. They’ve already demonstrated that they can’t afford the political price of blocking the bill; on the other hand, they’ve got a core of backbenchers who never liked the legislation in the first place, and whose anger and frustration will only increase after this.

On the other hand, it’s almost Christmas, and I’m supposed to be on vacation. So let’s go this route instead.

Here’s the Washington Post’s take on what happened yesterday:

How To Fix Congress

December 23rd, 2011
12:22 pm

Congressional Reform Act of 2011/2012

1. Term Limits
12 years max, some possible options are below.
A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension
Members of Congress receive a salary while in office,
that salary ends when they leave office.

3. Congress members (past, present & future) are to participate in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system
immediately.
All future funds flow into the Social Security system,
and Congress participates with all Americans.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan,
just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system
and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Members of Congress must equally abide by all laws
they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present members of Congress are void effective 1/1/12.
The American people did not make the contract members of Congress enjoy,
Congress made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.
The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators,
so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

This “tax cut” which isn’t a tax cut at all but simply a defunding of Social Security as you and one other poster pointed out, is going to the people who still have their jobs. It doesn’t do anything for the many unemployed. Just looks like more playing politics, this time with SS money, and everyone fell for it.

Doom, from earlier–My guess would be that the unspoken premise of this temporary defunding of SSI would be along the lines of economic stimulus. If everyone spends the extra $40 per week, it will theoretically stimulate the economy. It’s not saving any starving people on the brink of foreclosure as Jay has tried to imply a few times.

Per “stimulus”, my wish is that the Dems will one day recognize that business cycles, just like long-term temperature cycles, are predicated upon homeostatic forces which don’t require special “intervention” to work. The economy is slowly moving in a positive direction. Let’s stop handicapping our long-term prospects by running up the credit card any more.

It is indeed a corporatist, capitalist pig conspiracy to frustrate us to the point of buying batches of dogs and dog buns until they reach perfect numerical parity. And since I only eat kosher Hebrew hot dogs and buy the cheap shiite for my girlfriend cause she likes the ball park dogs then I have a whole new issue. “Per “stimulus”, my wish is that the Dems will one day recognize that business cycles”

Its been a long time since anyone mentioned the regular business cycle. I think of it like a longer term stock market. A good degree of gains, then a pullback and consolidation, a breather if you will to clean up excess credit, inventory, etc. before the onward march again.

For some reason people inexplicably look to the govt to run *fix* things as opposed to letting the business cycle run its course and self correct. This is what happened in the great depression which prolonged it, Japan’s lost decade, and now the stimulus of Obama. Govt doesn’t need to *fix* anything. Its interference simply prolongs the pain and history has shown this. And yet people still look to the govt to *fix* things.

When Reagan came in we largely had uninterruped growth for a couple of decades. There was a small blip on the radar under Bush 1 where we had a recession and Clinton was elected with the slogan “its the economy stupid”. Well that recession was barely a blip. One qtr of negative growth and I believe 1 or 2 qtrs of flat growth. A recession is actually 2 consecutive qtrs of negative growth. We didn’t need a stimulus. We just needed to leave things the hell alone and let the economy do its thing.

So if we go through meals where I eat at a 3 to 1 ratio then when would we perfectly exhaust our hot dog and bun supply and then journey out to get a fresh supply? Putting that harvey mudd education to the test here.

Oh yeah, that worked out well. No terrorist would dare hide in Iraq now.

On that we can agree…. grilled brats are the best

Alright, TD, factoring in the 3:1 consumption rate changes our combined hot dog group to 29 dogs, which is a prime number. We’re back up to 290 dogs and buns. ;-)

a) get off the couch b) buy or create a business with an SBA loan c) over hire d) provide incredible benefits e) pay more taxes than necessary and finally f) shoot a bird to the lazy greedy capitalist as you have proved your model

You forgot they can collectively join together and simply negotiate better pay/benefits and such. Contrary to popular conservative logic, EVERYONE can not start and run a successful business. There will always be owners and there will always be workers. The problem comes into play when the owners continuously manipulate the workers without even giving them a reach around.

They BOTH suck

they BOTH- What is a “demwit”?

Amember of the Democrat party. It is a reference to their lower education and all the sheeple of the “party of handouts” that follow them and are trying to keep them in power.

It’s fair counter to being called con, neo-con, repug et al.

Vote obama. Free money for everyone!

“neo con” is a term derived from a CONSERVATIVE leaning faction/group of people and their ideology of intervention in world affairs to protect what they see as the US way of life…

Boy, I’m getting weak. The 3:1 consumption rate as applied to packs of 7 and 8 dogs leads to a minimum of 24 packs of Hebrew dogs ( = 168 dogs) paired with 7 packs of BP dogs ( = 56 dogs), giving 214 combined dogs. To match this up with packs of 10 buns then requires 5 combined groups of dogs ( = 1070 dogs) and 107 packs of buns.

Only one who uses this is my wife. Since she got a new one for Christmas, it should pretty much be mine now.

Unless Jm is in Illinois, I’d say no.

PS: they still think obama is an idiot/crook here. Take out cook county and I’d say he has about a 4% approval rating.

Good news. obama best bud Tony Rezco is getting concurrent sentences! Probably still waiting for a pardon though…

“EVERYONE can not start and run a successful business.”- Brocephus

Bro,

To a degree you’re largely right about that when you’re talking about building large corporations. But small businesses are a whole different matter unless the govt just makes it difficult.

I know a lot of very small businessman who live very comfortably owning very small businesses from being a roofing contractor to a vacumm cleaner to all sorts of things. My girlfriend’s father had a 3rd grade education but started a roofing business and did very well for himself. He just roofed, hired a few folks under him, went after business, and did very well.

I have a friend from Iran who speaks horrible English. He is a carpet cleaner.Big, beautiful house in Alpharetta and coin in the bank. He basically built a profitable carpet cleaning business catering to Wendys and a series of hotels and motels on the I-20 corridor. This guy’s English is so horrible he couldn’t sell water to a man in the desert. But he works hard and tries hard. Now he’s got a few guys under him that do the grunt work while he just sends out the bill.

As for the young men that are the employees of both of these men, neither one of whom is particularly bright? There is nothing preventing them from going out and starting their own business doing the exact same thing and competing head to head with their former bosses.Everyone on here probably knows some very average joe six packs who have built very successful small businesses in everything from landscaping, pest control, to the jobs I mentioned to a whole slew of jobs that you can start out as a one man show and then expand as you build your customer base. And that’s what I myself did.

You don’t have to be Bill Gates. You can be a very small time entrepreneur and do very well in this country. As long as the govt stays off your back of course.
