Iraqi security personnel arrive at the scene of a massive car bombing in downtown Baghdad. (AP photo)
If you haven’t been following events in Iraq recently, here’s an update:
Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, the most prominent Sunni in government, has been accused of using his security entourage as a hit squad. Members of his security squad have confessed, but al-Hashimi claims that the confessions were obtained through torture, which is certainly plausible.
Al-Hashimi has fled to the Kurdish area of Iraq to avoid arrest. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has demanded that the Kurds surrender al-Hashimi, warning “there will be problems” if he is not handed over. He has also threatened to disband the governing coalition, creating a serious political crisis.
And now this, as reported in The Washington Post:
BAGHDAD — More than a dozen explosions in Baghdad over a two-hour period Thursday morning killed at least 63 people–the first major violence in Iraq since the U.S. completed its troop pullout last week and a political crisis broke out.
At least 185 people were reported injured in the bombings, said officials at the Ministry of Interior, who were speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The coordinated wave of attacks began around 6:30 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Wednesday in Washington). Witnesses said that all main roads and many government offices in the Iraqi capital remained closed for hours after.
I can’t say any of this is a surprise. While U.S. troops hadn’t been involved in security efforts in Iraq for more than a year, it’s hard to argue that it’s mere coincidence that this crisis has developed so shortly after their departure from the country. We’re still deeply involved in Iraqi affairs — CIA Director David Petraeus is in the country now, meeting with Iraqi leaders — but the country is clearly under their control, not ours. They will determine its fate.
We were there for almost nine years. If U.S. troops had remained for another five years, they might have been able to prevent this current crisis — for another five years. Sooner or later, though, a time was going to come in which the Iraqis would have to decide what kind of country they wanted, and by what means, if any, it was going to be held together.
That time may be now, and even if they make it through this crisis, others are inevitable. The notion that we could go in and remake another society — install new expectations, mindsets, cultural norms and democratic ideologies, as if we were installing a new engine in a car — has been the glaring flaw in our Iraq strategy from the very beginning. There are still grounds for hope of at least some success long-term, but there’s an equal if not better chance that the Iraqis will revert to their old ways of doing things.

little-to-none. Does that work?
I am really trying like hell to stay out of this, but no, it doesn’t. It’s preposterous. It has become a worldwide effort. Join in.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what a people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress. Men may not get all they pay for in this world; but they must pay for all they get. If we ever get free from all the oppressions and wrongs heaped upon us, we must pay for their removal. We must do this by labor, by suffering, by sacrifice, and, if needs be, by our lives, and the lives of others. ~Frederick Douglass

On your post about the kisd without computers, I can relate. My nephew went to school in Clayton Co. He had a computer since he was 10 (I bought it). I found out when he was in 9th grade that some of his friends didn’t. I gave one a laptop and another my desktop.

Thanks, BG. I went back and read them, as well. (Didn’t mean to seem rude.)
First, thanks for asking my opinion. Not that I ever offer it up otherwise.
I do not hate the right any more than I hate the wrong. I think the political right is often wrong headed. I also think the same of the left, but rarely write of it. Even so, I have freely acknowledged, numerous times, the excesses of liberalism and the ensuing new problems therein. I have also excoriated Bill Clinton and various other Democratic Party leaders and operatives – particularly those that voted to authorize the invasion/occupation of Iraq.
I tend to be a pragmatist. The sexual revolution, civil rights, the anti-war movement, the drugs and the music have all fueled the escape of long suppressed genies who can never be put back in the bottle. To wit, making abortion illegal is never ever gonna work again. It didn’t really work int he first place.
As for your questions…
1) I believe it is a false choice. There is room for more than just those two options. And why I have voted for Ralph Nader in the past three presidential elections.
2) I once asked Dusty if she thought this country would be better if there were no anti-war voices. To her credit, she said no. (But continued to denigrate them anyway, LOL!) I do not like the contrived construct of my “side” and your ’side”. I have many sides. In some ways I am considered very conservative, and in some ways I am considered very liberal. And I take some exception with the “new” definitions themselves. And on some issues I have changed my mind several times over the years (the unforgivable sin for politicians, huh?) – capital punishment and nuclear power come to mind.
3) I’m not sure what it says about me, but nothing comes to mind. Does that make me too dogmatic?

Obama’s education policies drive you nuts (if I recall correctly)
Or something to that effect
Do you consider that anyone that has to deal with Obama in their respective fields (business, medicine, finance, etc) are equally annoyed?
In other words, what may look like a sensible Obama policy to you looks very different than if you’re in that field
Obama’s education policy seems ok to me

Yeah, right. If you’re among the consensus that blames him for the FY10 deficit, then you’re already off to a rocky start on that one. I don’t have time to go through the archives to see if you’ve made such a statement or not, but that particular deficit is one that was signed into law by Bush. black guy,
You asked everyone something earlier about Ds, Rs, and what and why we believe in either one. I can’t speak for the other cons but I myself am much more L. I frankly don’t care much for the social issues. My beef is on economics, the size and obtrusiveness of federal govt into the economy, govt doing things it has no business being involved in.
As for the Rs I simply view them as the lesser evil of the 2 main parties. And I’ve seen plenty of despicable things from them that turn my stomach- Trent Lott and Navy ships we didn’t need, Bush acting more like a D then a conservative, lots of beefs.
What you will find here if you stick around long enough is that not all but many of the liberals on here have a blind ideological allegiance to liberalism, Obama, etc. They’re like zombies in that Obama and the Dems can do zero wrong. Not all liberals on here are like that but many are. Some of the cons are like that also but what you will see is that there are many cons who were disappointed with W and other R leaders and have no problem saying it. You’ll find few liberals on here who will open their minds to other concepts or ideas.

if you are going to the polls in Georgia next year to just vote for Obama then you might as well stay at home because your vote will not be counted.

thinker, I have no earthly idea. But am convinced it had nothing to do with national security.
This was not a very bright man. He always struck me as a petulant brat with a silver spoon in his mouth. And he learned nothing from a man who was by degrees of magnitude more courageous and intelligent than he – Dwight Eisenhower. Something about a military industrial complex?
History will never be kind to GWB and his deadly and immoral “smoking gun mushroom cloud” administration.
To put things in perspective, fully half of the people polled as he left office, said his was the worst administration in history. HALF. He is a failure that is completely off the charts.
And I am absolutely convinced that he will never climb out of the lowest of rankings…

I disagree on the lesser of 2 evils? To both parties, we are chattle, livestock, or useful idiots. They NEED us sniping at each other while they continue to stuff their pockets. The disdain for the other side is almost like tourettes(sp?) for either side. The modern American political public is like Pavlov’s Dog. Show them a D or R, and they begin to foam at the mouth (see getalife or Adam on the left and Scout or LBB on the right). Does that solve our problems?

And I suspect you are right, thinker. The Bush family’s political ambitions ultimately led to disaster.

As do I, BG. I call it the evil of the two lessers.

“Why because he plans on voting for Newt. Newt can not be any worse then the current occupant of the office. I am sure he would make a 100 times better President then Obama.”

If I break the rules then I will take responsibility for my actions and suffer the consequences but if I do not then I expect a professional will be a man and admit they were wrong.

I agree to a point. That was one of the things I liked about the TP early on. They fought against the establishment GOP and introduced other players. Unfortunately they didn’t vet them well enough. I want a candidate that is a citizen who doesn’t use politics to enrich themselves (I know unicorns and butt skittles).

That black guy,
I don’t disagree with you on any of your post except that I still think the Dems are the greater of the 2 evils. Why? Because they espouse govt power and govt power is far harder to diminish and or eradicate. The other thing is that by using govt power to make people dependent on you- to build voting blocks of people dependent on you- a critical mass of creeping socialism can be reached in the welfare state where enough entrenched voter interests will bankrupt the overall system eventually. Greece comes to mind. That is why the Democrats are something to be far more weary of in my opinion. I won’t dispute the rest of your post though.

Politics is very imperfect, to say the least
Good people often don’t run
Mitt is a good person, and at a base level so is Obama
So mitt v Obama u have two honest good people
Now the choice is who will do a better job growing the economy and creating more jobs for people who need to work
I frankly think it’s mitt all day long
(this obviously presumes newt isn’t the republican nominee)

I disagree my friend. I purchase this paper every Sunday (mostly for coupons) and that means I help pay our host salary and as such am a customer and not a guest. As a customer I expect to have to follow the rules set up on these blogs and if I break said rules then I will gladly face the consequences. Also, as a customer I have the expectation that the host will treat me with a certain amount of dignity and respect. If the host was wrong then I see no problem with the expectation of an apology.
