In Iraq, the old ways of doing things may be reasserting themselves

If you haven’t been following events in Iraq recently, here’s an update:

Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, the most prominent Sunni in government, has been accused of using his security entourage as a hit squad. Members of his security squad have confessed, but al-Hashimi claims that the confessions were obtained through torture, which is certainly plausible.

Al-Hashimi has fled to the Kurdish area of Iraq to avoid arrest. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has demanded that the Kurds surrender al-Hashimi, warning “there will be problems” if he is not handed over. He has also threatened to disband the governing coalition, creating a serious political crisis.

And now this, as reported in The Washington Post:

BAGHDAD — More than a dozen explosions in Baghdad over a two-hour period Thursday morning killed at least 63 people–the first major violence in Iraq since the U.S. completed its troop pullout last week and a political crisis broke out.

At least 185 people were reported injured in the bombings, said officials at the Ministry of Interior, who were speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The coordinated wave of attacks began around 6:30 a.m. local time (10:30 p.m. Wednesday in Washington). Witnesses said that all main roads and many government offices in the Iraqi capital remained closed for hours after.

I can’t say any of this is a surprise. While U.S. troops hadn’t been involved in security efforts in Iraq for more than a year, it’s hard to argue that it’s mere coincidence that this crisis has developed so shortly after their departure from the country. We’re still deeply involved in Iraqi affairs — CIA Director David Petraeus is in the country now, meeting with Iraqi leaders — but the country is clearly under their control, not ours. They will determine its fate.

We were there for almost nine years. If U.S. troops had remained for another five years, they might have been able to prevent this current crisis — for another five years. Sooner or later, though, a time was going to come in which the Iraqis would have to decide what kind of country they wanted, and by what means, if any, it was going to be held together.

That time may be now, and even if they make it through this crisis, others are inevitable. The notion that we could go in and remake another society — install new expectations, mindsets, cultural norms and democratic ideologies, as if we were installing a new engine in a car — has been the glaring flaw in our Iraq strategy from the very beginning. There are still grounds for hope of at least some success long-term, but there’s an equal if not better chance that the Iraqis will revert to their old ways of doing things.

Without getting any further into it, I will say this, there are a lot of people in the country for whom $40 is a critical whap to the budget…then there are a lot of people who just simply can’t conceive that what they drop on lunch would be the difference of whether or not there’s fatback in the beans…this is just one small example of how far apart the haves and the have nots are and that’s long, long, long before we go off on the 1% 99% thingie…

Just a note. On the Bookman blog, if not offerred “new meat”, his fervent followers devolve into some kind of a “Lord of the Flies” dynamic. At first it is civil then it deteriorates into increasingly bitter commentary from its liberal constituents. Make no mistake, there are a few conservative comment makers that partake in this also but the most vile comments come from the liberals. It is the Holidays (whatever that means to you) folks. Why don’t you give it a break for at least a few days?

Jay, I know you thrive on the hits from these people but at least at this time of year maybe you should deprive them of political fodder and make them talk to “REAL” people, not a bunch of faceless people on some blog that mean absolutely nothing to them and that if they ever did actually have to meet they probably couldn’t stand them. Quit offering them more and more political fodder to make them even more bitter. My god, is politics all that life has to offer you people? If so, that is kind of pathetic.

Amvet, I’m with you. Music is much more important than politics. Unfortunately, there are far too many people that fail to understand this and that can savour the real joy that good music can bring to the tortured soul. Maybe Jay should start posting musical topics tomorrow morning and not stop until New Years. Next year is going to be an ugly year for our country so at least for now give it a rest.

“Average” American famillies, as described by Obama who would not have a “pizza night” have I-phones, I-Pads and 52 inch TV’s. And those things are so very, very necessary, aren’t they? Obama’s little display on the pizza deal may come back to haunt him. Nobody cares about a lousy pizza. People care about jobs and security both of which he has done anything about.

You might not care about a lousy pizza, but I imagine pizza shop owners care a great deal. People who are invested in Pizza Hut or Papa John’s probably gives a damn too. Don’t forget about the people who work for those companies too. I’m willing to bet you’ll find a few of those who care about the average family having “pizza night”. That $40 dollars that you think is nothing is $40 dollars that will go right back into the economy instead of going into somebody’s investment account or offshore account. I’m willing to bet this economy will be better off with 100 million people spending an extra $40 a paycheck instead of giving 4000 people an extra $40k in capital gains cuts. That’s just my opinion though.

Whether anybody wants to admit it or not, whomever is to blame, we are all in this together and we will either survive together or we will fall together. Aaaaaaand then there’s the rest of the story. Imagine that. A tea party Democrat. More like just a plain nut.

In a post listed since the latest flare-up, Manson derisively announces a 2012 run for California’s 28th State Senate district as a Democrat.

“I intend on representing the Democratic Party with due dignity, and loyalty for my campaign contributors which will happen to be public-sector labor unions and other collective bargaining institutions that help keep the poor man down and dependent on government,” he writes. “I will also strongly advocate for the raising of taxes to meet the growing unsustainable demand for pensions and compensation packages for state workers despite California being the second highest taxed state in the union.”

Okay, those ipads and what have you…

I’m currently in a dither about something I’ve been having to deal with, I found out that in order to complete their homework assignments, students in our local middle school have to have access to internet. Don’t do the homework, the grade plummets. And that’s before we even get to the special projects.

Some of the kids down the street, useless latinos, BTW, do not have computers at home. They have less than 30 minutes access time at school. S., a highly motivated, highly intelligent and highly perceptive young man comes to my house to use the computer and internet. One, just one, of his projects which will account for a quarter of his final grade, required over 30 hours to complete…

So, I went into my own classes and took a poll of how many kids did not have computers and internet at home. It was 60% of them. So, don’t come at me with what “those people” have and do not have.

See, here’s the rub with that whole “job creators” thingie. You never hear mention of WHERE those jobs are created. There’s a huge difference between job creators and American job creators. When you look deep enough, we’re all job creators as we have those Chinese factories cranking out all kinds of toxic sh*t for us to buy. We’re even allowing them to electronically spy on us to get sales techniques and stuff to beat us at our own game. All the while, the people who could really turn the AMERICAN economy around keep on going to China to give our country away. Buncha jackasses…

Richard Engel was on the news last night. He is a reporter who has spent years covering the Iraq war. According to him, the Sunnis and Shites have been fighting each other for centuries in Iraq. He said Iraq went into a civil war in 2007 and the surge mostly stopped it. He also said we are leaving Iraq because they have told us to leave. They would have allowed 2500 troops to remain but they would have been under Iraq law and we would not accept that. So, basicly, they have kicked us out of their country and are probably going to resume their internal fighting. It would be helpful if some of you here would get your facts straight before blaming Obama for everything that has gone wrong there and for our withdrawal.

The worst part about watching those nice OWS protesters was watching the tall goon follow a man and his daughter all the way down the block to taunt them. And it aint one nut. Its a whole bevy of sick OWS people yelling at grade school kids. Libs can be some sick people.
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/11/17/ows-protesters-chant-follow-those-kids-as-small-children-try-to-go-to-school-on-wall-street/

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — They were caught in the middle of madness.

Some grade school students were forced to walk a gauntlet of screaming “Occupy Wall Street” protesters just to get to school on Thursday.

In the middle of thousands of protestors yelling and chanting — some kicking and screaming – CBS 2’s Emily Smith found little school kids trying to get to class. Nervous parents led them through the barriers on Wall Street. The NYPD helped funnel the children, anything to ease their fears while some protestors chanted “follow those kids!”

“These guys are terrorists, yelling at little kids,” one father said.

“For them it’s horrible. They’re afraid of all the crowds. We’re not even able to get through. They’re just, he’s … very afraid now,” a mother added.

One protester followed a father and his little daughter all the way down the block

josef,

$40 is important to some people. But keep in mind that this is money that has to be repaid to SS. All we’re doing is stealing money from future payments that have to be made. Curiously nobody seems to be concerned about the fact that the funds that need to go to SS are not going there. And eventually the bill will come due and the piper will need to be paid. “Such violence from those tea party type, eh Doom. Bring it, “smartboy”.”

On this one’s defense…didn’t hear anything that mentioned him being a republican, conservative, tea party member, etc.

ASSuming is not a good quality to have.

Oh, Lawdy

Taxpayer has his signs and I have a poll showing that 1/3rd of those nice ows folks support violence. Straight from the horses mouth, or rather from the jackasses mouths.

Ozzy has his crazy train.
Taxpayer has his stupid train.

What’s this? More violence at the port of Oakland. Oh but taxpayer. He do have his signs though. Those signs physically attacked a lot of folks and tore up a lot of property they did.

Taxpayer,

Me losing to you? Hell I can bang you up all day long. Still waiting on your posts of rapes at tea party protests. I posted at least a couple of them on those nice ows protestors. Other than the rapes I did notice that you could only post some isolated incidents involving one person. And of course some signs that hurt some folks feelings. Funnny thing. You post an incident involving one person and I post incidences involving hundreds of ows protesters committing violence, intimidation, or property damage.

Sport, Your posts give chilean guano exports a run for their money.

Didn’t need to. You said it for me in your agitation.

One should avoid if possible making a fool of himself. At the very least you should have avoided rushing headlong into it.

That’s a real nice batch of guys you associate with there, Thulsa.

And if you think I’ve only posted one or so meaningless inciodents, you obviously have not kept track of my links. Try again, Thulsa. And don’t forget to tack on another of those loser remarks that you are so well known for doling out as you lose the argument.

Thulsa claims to have posted evidence of multiple rapes by OWS people. Really Thulsa. You got the results of the rape kits and the signed confessions from the self-proclaimed OWS person. Keep trying, Thulsa.

Remember that little dust-up recently over the alleged “plot” to involve Mexican drug hitmen to knock off a Saudi ambassador?

Keep a close eye on these little stunts.

We’re getting warmer.

If I was a liberal here I’d write like this: it’s a miracle big a$$ Michelle can fit her big butt in the white house. Maybe the use her but as a paper weight for those 2000 page democratic bills.

So Taxpayer,

Do you have a synopsis of total tea party members arrested yet? No? No surprise there. Silliness becomes you.

On a more serious note why do you write posts just for self ridicule?

By the way, not that I’m not glad to see the latest little sham fake imbroglio in Washington get settled today, but seriously … Am I supposed to be impressed by this spectacle?

I can promise you something sports fans …. when people like me get through with our work, we won’t even need to talk about some pi$$-ant extension of a few months of unemployment benefits.

Believe me.

That’s liberal speak for: “frank is full of bunk and Michelle is overweight in her rear”
