Newt Gingrich has become the target of an all-out advertising and media blitz in Iowa, launched by fellow candidates and others determined that he will not become the party nominee.
Ron Paul is using his money to savage the former speaker. (”Pointing out people’s positions is not negative,” Paul says.) A pastor backing Michele Bachmann is calling Gingrich “a very fine, empty suit with a broken zipper,” dismissing him as “a glib, wordy cheater.” Mitt Romney says Gingrich is “zany,” and has released an ad that closes with the question “With friends like Newt, who needs the left?”
Restore Our Future, a pro-Romney PAC, is also running the following ad:
It’s apparently having a serious impact. A new Rasmussen poll now puts Romney ahead in Iowa with 23 percent of the vote, with Gingrich second at 20 percent and Paul at 18 percent. Public Policy Polling also reports a tight three-man race, with Gingrich (22 percent) falling quickly, with Paul (21 percent) and Romney (16 percent) close behind.
More telling, a PPP poll a week ago put Newt’s approval/disapproval numbers at 62/31. In the new poll, that has dropped to 52/40, and support among Tea Party voters has fallen from 35 percent to 24 percent.

The eventual winner will be the one who steps out of the current fray to state the he or she is running against PrezBO until either (a) the Republicans pick another nominee or (b) they win / lose in November 2012. The reality is that their opponent IS in the White House; not someone else trying to get there!

Yeah well in other news…..How about Moochelle Obama taking off for Hawaii on vacation ahead of her husband, basically costing the taxpayers a lot more money in transportation and security costs? Why can’t she wait until the President goes a couple days later? Why is our President allowing this to occur? Why is he such a hypocrite? He tells the rest of the government to curb spending while allowing his wife to waste tax money in going early. This is just ridiculous. If she desperately wanted to go on vacation ahead of him, then have her pay the $1000 to fly to Hawaii business class. What a joke.

Stands….so you are okay with this waste, fraud, and abuse? Is it any wonder why the US is in such terrible economic shape? I love how you give Obama a pass on this but you want to skewer the rich for not paying their “fair share.” Out of curiosity….what is their “fair share” How much is enough? No matter how much extra you propose the rich pays, it isn’t going to mean anything when the government continues to waste taxpayer money. Then, they will just come back asking for more and of course, you will support them.

As I said downstairs, the AJC, ever sensitive to charges that it’s a “liberal” MSM outlet, wants to make sure to keep everything nice and organized, so Bookman is to toe the line by only ever sniping at the hypocrisy and shortcomings of the GOP (tacitly condoning the Democrats in the process), while Wingfield has a monopoly on pointing out the wrongdoings of Democrats and why they’re all wrong. Never shall the twain meet.
True, AJC doesn’t have them ghettoized into “Left-leaning” and “Right-leaning” opinions like WaPo, but the principle is the same. Don’t confuse things too much for the rubes – we got site traffic to keep up.

Newt’s absurd candidacy is even more laughable than that of his fellow adulterer, Herman.
In my worthless opinion, John Huntsman is the only current Republican candidate who is moral, intelligent and qualified enough to run for president of the United States of America.
But, his proven record of rational thinking, statesmanship and pragmatism is anathema to neo-conservatism and is distasteful to the rabid dogs who run the Party of No. As well as to the lapdogs out here in the hinterlands who empower them.

If you really want to dig into it though, Bush actually WORKED while on the so called vacation unlike Obama who plays golf and ride bicycles. Also, are you counting all of the time Obama has been in office as vacation because he certainly isn’t DOING anything other than try to play golf. What is the difference between his days on vacation and days he is “working.” Regardless, why are we even comparing Bush and Obama’s vacation time. I am talking about a first lady who is just so out of touch with reality that she thinks it is perfectly acceptable to leave a couple days early regardless of its cost to you and me. We are talking about a President that allows it to happen rather than saying “you know honey…..I just told the rest of the government to cut back on spending….maybe you should lead by example and just go when I go.”
Mr. B, Why doesn’t his waste fraud and abuse concern you? It isn’t like this payroll taxcut is going to make a difference really? All they are doing is taking more money out of the payroll tax? What does the payroll tax fund? Social Security. Where do you think they are going to get money to pay for it? Social Security benefits. When will you people WAKE UP!!! The government is killing us. Paul, Thanks for at least throwing a number out there. Now for a follow up question or two. How much would you like the other people to pay? They share the same things as the rich people…shouldn’t they contribute to this beautiful society we live in? How much are you asking for the government to cut back? I have no problem with tax hikes. What I have a problem with is when a tax hike is given and Congress continues its out of control spending and they will come back and ask for another tax hike. When I read what you wrote, it appears as though you are okay with allowing just that. Out of curiosity, what “program” says there are no pay increases for two years? I suppose if somebody is a government employee, that would apply but that is it.

Oh damn….there’s another one. Is it because you are too stupid to realize how much he doesn’t like this country because he has pretty much said it. Wow….another one. I gotta stop stating these words. It’s sad that a guy like Newt is even in the race. He is a proven adulterer, liar, hypocrite…the list goes on. But aside from Newt, look at the Herman Cain experiment, Rick Perry, Donald Trump and Michelle Bachmann. These people were a machination of a populace that is obsessed with very little substance and all the grandiosity that one can muster.
If you take into account the importance placed on the “Royal Wedding”, the Kardashian wedding and the fact that a guy like T.I. can come out of prison for trying to buy illegal guns and silencers, then be sent back to jail for riding around L.A. in a limo smoking weed, popping ecstasy pills, and drinking codine syrup and not get one but two television shows say’s a lot about how we as a society see things.
The number one lesson in sales is the ABC’s, “always be closing”. The American population is the biggest consumer in the world and not just of material items and the marketing machine known as the U.S. has sold you a bill of goods.

What I have a problem with is going on vacation a couple days ahead of the President to the same place, costing the taxpayers a decent chunk of change, especially after the President himself issued a policy to the rest of the government to cut unnecessary spending. Why you cannot see the validity in this is absurd.

“Now for a follow up question or two. How much would you like the other people to pay”
I’m pretty good with the rates where they are. I can go along with a Huntsman-like proposal in total, also. But I’d really be happier with flattening out what we now have, but adding new tiers above $379,150. It strikes me as nutty we have these compressed bands, when there are a significant number of earners waaaay above the top tier. Doesn’t strike me as an ideally progressive tax schedule.
How much to cut back? I’d be pretty draconian. Ever notice how, on a local level, the authorities pull the old “if you don’t pass our tax increase we’ll close libraries, cut back on fire and police protection” routine. Panetta’s doing the same thing with Defense. It’s all about “we’ll have only this many planes, ships and front line troops.” It’s never “okay, we’ll cut these weapons systems and these headquarters units and….” I mean, it’s gone up by more than half in less than a decade and these guys are acting like a modest cutback is the end of the world.
Other stuff – ag subsidies, gone. Homeland Security – all the overlap in training centers, etc, gone. Any time you’re dealing with bureaucracies that large it really is a target-rich environment.
“Out of curiosity, what “program” says there are no pay increases for two years?”

abe, today’s Republicans are prototypical reactionaries.
reactionary -adjective, noun, plural -ar·ies.
1. of, pertaining to, marked by, or favoring reaction, especially extreme conservatism or rightism in politics; opposing political or social change.
Thus, their never-ending rebirth of McCarthyism and their failed social policies right out of the 1950s.
Neo-cons are not agents for action, change or progress. They react.
Simply put, their modus operandi is that if non-Republicans are for soemthing, they react by being against it. And vice versa.
For example, look at their absurd stance on anthropogenic climate change. Virtually the entire civilized, educated, enlightened world endorses the science that underlies the theory. So, they are opposed. For them, it has NOTHING to do with the search for scientific truths or understandings at all. The end game is to oppose, obstruct, delay any and all change…

Government spending can be roughly divided into two areas from the view of the bureaucracy:
1. Resources that go to the people the program was established to help, and
2. “Nice things we do for ourselves” (from the perspective of the bureaucracy)

Ross Perot, Please see below (by Sheldon Richmond, on FFF website)
Excuse me? Progressives — who properly savaged George W. Bush for his autocratic presidency, civil-liberties flouting PATRIOT Act, undeclared war on Iraq, use of detention and torture at Guantanamo and elsewhere, and warrantless surveillance — are supposed to be happy with Barack Obama, who has essentially carried on most Bush policies, even kicking them up a few notches?
If we listen to Chait, there is nothing at all disappointing about Obama’s expansion of drone attacks in Pakistan and Somalia, with their routine “collateral damage” to innocents; his flagrant violation of the War Powers Resolution (not to mention the Constitution and his campaign promise) with his intervention in Libya; his intensification of the war in Afghanistan; his sanctions (an act of war) against Iran; his broken pledge to close Guantanamo; his support of indefinite detention without charge; his policy of assassinating even American citizens abroad without due process; his renewal of the PATRIOT Act; his placement of Marines in Australia with the words, “The United States is a Pacific power, and we are here to stay”; his failed attempt to lift the UN ban on cluster bombs; or his invocation of state secrets to keep torture victims out of court.
Chait thinks Obama should get credit for “ending the war in Iraq” — but hold on. The December 31, 2011, withdrawal date is set in the Status of Forces Agreement negotiated between the Iraqi government and the Bush administration. Obama tried — but failed — to persuade Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to let U.S. troops stay longer. As it is, they will simply be moved down the road to Kuwait, and a large contract mercenary force will likely be left behind at the humongous embassy in Baghdad.
For Chait and his ilk, these all must count as “foreign policy successes.”
And what about torture? Nothing upset Progressives more during the Bush years. Toward the end of the administration, the criminal policy was abandoned and was forsworn by Obama. Yet the detention center at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan has been called “worse than Guantanamo” by Daphne Eviatar, an attorney for Human Rights First. Adds John Glaser of Antiwar.com,
There are now 3,000 detainees in Bagram, up from 1,700 since June (!) and five times the amount there when Barack Obama took office. Many of them have not been charged, have seen no evidence against them and do not have the right to be represented by a lawyer, aren’t given fair trials, and the U.S. claims it is not even obligated to explain why these people are caged.
A U.S. special operations “black site” at Bagram features “sleep deprivation, holding detainees in cold cells, forced nudity, physical abuse, detaining individuals in isolation cells for longer than 30 days, and restricting the access of the International Committee of the Red Cross,” according to Jonathan Horowitz’s investigation for the Open Society Institute.
Finally, in a move that bodes ill for the future, Obama refuses to criminally or civilly investigate Bush administration officials for illegal torture of prisoners. He won’t even empanel a “truth commission” to bring the facts before the American people. Future administrations will thus have little to fear when they break the law.

getalife, You have to understand that I am a Vet that served in Iraq. When the decision to go to Iraq was coming around, I probably had a little bit of revenge on my mind for 9-11 and general hatred towards Sadaam. My thought on Sadaam and Iraq’s involvement is that whether they had anything to do with 9-11, to me, remains to be proved or disproved. What is a fact is that Sadaam sponsored terror in the form of paying the families of suicide bombers. I thought it was a just cause and I thought it was in the interest of national security. We were going to take out a guy who killed 100s of thousands. From then on, though, I had mixed feelings. It was a few bad apples that ruined the bunch over there. You had a lot of people that were very appreciative but you have those ones that wanted you gone. I think we went about the invasion all wrong. There should have been more people. Rumsfeld Fd up badly and didn’t care for Shinseki’s opinion. As the conflict dragged on, the more I felt like we need to get out of there but I still felt that we should not just leave and allow the men who died there to die in vain. I am glad we are leaving there now. Obama has done good there to an extent. I, like many of his Generals, think we need some presence there but not in huge numbers.
I found Ron Paul rather recently. Here is another you have to understand about me. I can really care less about social issues. Gay sex, smoke weed, abortion….you name it….politicians stance on those subjects do not really influence my vote. His positions on issues I care about are pretty solid. He realizes that the greatest security risk to this country is that of being so far in debt that we cannot function and the only way to defend against that risk is to cut spending. It is hard to argue with that. If we do not survive as a country, then all of the rest won’t really matter.

The big danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgement of a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is far more serious than Obama who is just a symptom of what ails America. Blaming the Prince of Fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools such as those who made him President.

What Sarah Really Said:
“GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?
PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.
The reason why the SNL skit was so believable was because the above ^^^ by Palin was too lucid and insightful to be from her. So people automatically thought that it couldn’t be true.

Late to this, but no, I never begrudged whatever we spent on the previous First Lady’s travel (and I’m sure it was pretty significant–how could it not be?). In fact, you’ll have to search far and wide to find anything even mildly critical of GWB’s family; my beef was never with those ladies and as far as I can tell, Laura Bush and her daughters seem like a perfectly decent people.

What I have a problem with is going on vacation a couple days ahead of the President to the same place, costing the taxpayers a decent chunk of change, especially after the President himself issued a policy to the rest of the government to cut unnecessary spending. Why you cannot see the validity in this is absurd.
Wow- Have you nothing left to find fault with but this bit of trivia? Do you have ANY idea why a personal decision such as this was made?? Could it perhaps have been a security concern?? Have you NEVER had a family situation in which a family member had to head out later than the rest of the family because of work that had be done?..or something? Whatever the reason, this is so trite as to be pitiful and most of all, it’s NOYDB why they are doing it. I think you read too much into my statement to getalife. Of course its not Obama’s fault a drone got lost. He is taking the fight straight to them even if it is inside of Pakistan which is something W was loathe to do.
Hell I don’t blame Jimmy Carter for the failed operation to rescue the hostages in Iran back in 79. I was just relating to getalife that in his worldview Obama can do no wrong and W can do no right. Likewise there are of course some righties who believe the opposite.

If BO gets praise for approving the raid on OBL’s compound or for the killing of terrorists in Pakistan with drones, then he deserves blame for authorizing the spy mission over Iran that resulted some of our best tech ending up in the hands of the Iranians.

Debbiedo,
The U.S. has funded more terrorists than Saddamm? Unfortunately you are probably not only right but more so than you think. We not only funded the entire Mujahadeen movement to counter the Soviets in Afgh. but we’ve historically funded numerous brutal dictatorships during the cold war. Other terrorist organizations not so much but the funding of the Mujaheedin alone who some of the later became terrorists- Bin Laden, gives us the possible edge over Saddamm in pure numbers of terrorists possibly funded. Saddamm was a dangerous and brutal man who may have killed up to 1 million of his own people so I’m not sorry that he’s gone. But he also was at one time an ally of the U.S. in his fight against the mullahs in Iran. And we funded him. Politics makes strange bedfellows. Strange indeed.
We didn’t fund the communist Sandinistas though. I think you have them confused with the contra guerrillas who we did fund to overthrow the Marxist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. I wouldn’t call them terrorists though since in my view they were fighting a Marxist dictatorship. Now could some of them committed some atrocities? Certainly.

It is the time of year when people assess the accomplishments of the past year and strategize on what to expect and where to invest in the coming election year. First of all, it is going to suck because this race is going to be the nastiest 24/7 in your face pr campaign ever. James Taranto in the WSJ today points out that the Obama campaign is soliciting email addresses of Republicans so that the campaign can send emails congratulating them for donations made in their name. Pretty sad when the White House feels the need for an organized Spam project. What’s next, robo-dialing prank phone calls? Hey Granny, your refrigerator’s running, better go catch it. Barclay’s Capital this week released their prognostication for the year. They suggest that 2012 will be like 1952, 1976, 1980, and 1992. In each of these presidential election years, the economy was struggling. In each, the party of the candidate in power lost in the general election. Those prior periods followed bad recessions and featured declining presidential approval ratings, with employment and/or inflation serving as the focus of debate. Barclays predicts that stock market volatility will increase going into the Republican primaries, subside in March, and pick up once again in August with the conventions.

And just what would expect ANY president of the US to say in a similar situation?
“We just spent multi-billions of dollars, got 50,000 or so of our guys injured or maimed, caused the deaths of maybe 500,000 Iraqis and 4000 of our sons, daughters, husbands and wives to extinguish a threat that existed only in our imaginations and to remove one two-bit dictator from power.”

I would have preferred to vote for Giuliani in 2008. Since McCain/Palin were the nominees, I voted for them rather than vote for a man that had spent the past 20 years attending a church with a pastor that hated America and made no secret of it. (Obama’s children heard those sermons also.) None of Wright’s sermons supported America nor did he support racial harmony.

they BOTH suck,
True enough. And the policy for example of supporting dictatorships as opposed to fostering democracy through the entirety of the cold war was done through both D and R administrations with the exception of Carter who made human rights the cornerstone of his foreign policy. But even then Carter had to begrudgingly support tyrants as allies. Its amazing how many people do not realize or think about this.

Doom – you may be right about the “dictatorships” and not “terrorists” mien.
The US jas a history of supporting right-wing dictatorships in Central and South America in support of American commercial interest in those countries (such as mining companies and United Fruit) , such as:
El Salvador (General Maximilio Hernández- 1932)
Nicaragua (The Somozas)
“The Marines invaded Nicaragua in 1912 and stayed until 1933, fighting but never defeating the revolutionary Augusto Sandino. They created the Nicaraguan National Guard and installed Anastasio Somoza Garcia in power. Then Sandino, who had signed a truce and put down his arms, was assassinated by Somoza. In 1935, General Smedley Butler, who led the Marines into Nicaragua, said: “[I was] a high class muscle man for big business, for Wall Street and for the banks. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism – I helped purify Nicaragua for [an] international banking house.” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt put it another way. “Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”
Guatemala
The succession of corrupt military dictators ruled Guatemala for over 30 years, one anti-communist tyrant after another receiving U.S. support, aid, and training”
Honduras (Roberto Suazo Cordova)
Honduras was the original “Banana Republic,” its history inextricably intertwined with that of the U.S.-based United Fruit Company, but in 1979, when Anastasio Somoza was overthrown in Nicaragua Honduras got a new nickname: “The Pentagon Republic.” In 1978 Honduras received $16.2 million in U.S. aid; by 1985 it was getting $231.1 million, primarily because President Suazo Cordova, working with U.S. Ambassador John Dmitri Negroponte and Honduran General Gustava Alvarez, allowed Honduras to become a training center for U.S. funded Nicaraguan contras. General Alvarez, who according to Newsweek, “doesn’t care if officers are thieves, as long as they are virulent anti-communists,” assisted in training programs and founded a special “hit squad,” the Cobras. Victims of the Cobras were stripped, bound, thrown into pits and tortured. The Reagan Administration claimed ignorance of these human rights violations, but U.S. advisors have admitted knowledge”
Panama (General Manuel Noriega)
“The U.S. command post for covert Latin American operations is located in the Canal Zone where a series of figurehead presidents, some backed by General Manual Noriega, have involved Panama in U.S. intelligence operations. Noriega first met with then CIA Director George Bush in 1976 while Noriega was collecting $100 thousand a year as a CIA asset.Their friendly relationship persisted even after Noriegas’ drug dealing was revealed by a 1975 DEA investigation. During the Reagan era, Noriega collaborated with Oliver North on covert actions against Nicaragua, training contras and providing a trans-shipment point for CIA supported operations that flew weapons to the contras and cocaine into the U.S.”
This of course does not include Pinochet, (Chile) or Batista (Cuba).

I’ve also read several books on Latin America and talked indepth about the politics of the region when I lived there. I don’t think that I know a helluva lot more about the topic than you. I know I do.
The contras were alleged to have killed 2 nuns by the Sandinista govt who the contras of course were fighting and several left wing human rights organizations have alleged some isolated atrocities. That’s about it. But it was not a matter of contra policy to systematically carry out terrorist bombings or attacks on civilian targets.

My impression from the intent of his posts is it isn’t one of our ‘real’ RQ-170s.
To me, it just does not make sense that, when presented with several options to destroy it, the Pres rejected the options on the basis of ‘it would be seen as an act of war.’ That phase of the scenario just doesn’t pass the common-sense test if it were, in fact, the real thing.

What does it mean when people refer to themselves in the third person?
I believe that first and foremost this is most likely an affectation. Possibly an attempt to get attention. Possibly they want someone to be concerned that they aren’t well. If this is the case, I would talk to them at least in passing and ask why they say that. Another one could be that they have self-acknowledgement issues. Possibly guilt/shame/embarassment. Possibly low self-esteem. They may feel like an outsider as this would be a symbolic way to represent the self in a disasociated manner. People who do this may be coping with some issues that need to be brought into light. I would look at other aspects of their behavior. If it is deliberated towards some and not others, those who they direct this impersonal self-reference towards may be people who they feel neglected by. They may be sanely trying to say, in an oblique manner, “You don’t acknowledge me, and so now neither do I.” Possible Passive-aggressive tendacies? I would say these are most likely only because I have personally done this in my youth for reasons stated herein

I actually lived in Spain as a child, took Spanish throughout high school and college, and took numerous courses in Latin American affairs in college because Spanish culture had always interested me going back to my childhood in Spain. My immersion in Spanish culture in language and in custom is a little more than just one year as a foreign exchange student with an English/Spanish translator. BTW no one I knew carries those things except tourists. If you have a question about something you simply ask “como se dice” and point to the object or if its more indepth you ask one of your compatriots who also speaks English. Carrying a translation book just makes you look like a fool- which is probably what you carried I’m sure and which is why you think others are as foolish as yourself. We’re not.

Yo me gusta jugar con sand flea, cockaroach, chihuahua, y otras.
One day I just may bang up my fan club members with little snippets in Spanish all day just to mess with them. Damn that would be cruel. Be like a cat toying with a mouse all day long. They say something stupid. Doomy razzes them in Spanish. What can they do? Oh lawdy, Jm you just opened up a whole new world of messin with the sand fleas, the chihuahuas, and the cockaroaches in a way that leaves them feeling impotent in futile in their inability to respond in kind. I’m not cruel though. Besides I like for them to know exactly what I am saying to them. Still may start sneaking some snippets in there here and there. Doomy gonna have some fun with his toys.

And contrary to what some of this blogs liberals stated earlier today, make no mistake, the 2012 National Defense Authorisation Act will enable the government to intern American citizens if they are deemed as being “terrorists”. What disturbs me, this all hangs upon what our government defines a “terrorist” as being. Depending upon what politician of whichever party makes that determination that could eventually encompass a mighty wide range a people, depending upon the politics of the person interpreting the law, couldn’t it? Terrorist could eventually mean anyone that doesn’t agree with the government, couldn’t it? And Obama has already authorized the killing of American citizens on foreign soil, hasn’t he because he deemed them “terrorists”? Internment is a small price to pay compared to that, isn’t it? Our freedoms are marching out the door under Obama. Of course Jay will be silent upon this as Obama will sign the law and Jay doesn’t want to do anything to jeopardize Obama’s re-election campaign.

What does it mean? Do you not realize that all of the spectacles playing out before us right now — from the takeover of entire European countries by what amount to no more than lobbyists for the financial sector (Draghi), not to mention extortion of savage cuts on benefits and promised pensions to workers in some countries just to please foreign investors, to the inability of our political system in this country to extract even a single penny of extra revenue from the wealthiest classes to maintain the current social safety net, even as these wealthy classes have revenues at stratospheric levels, is a DIRECT result of the absolute dominance of financial capital on a world scale?
If not, I’m not sure I can help you.
It means breaking the stranglehold that financial capital has on the entire world economy that dictates

Jm: “Break up the big banks. Don’t destroy banking itself”
Well, obviously.
The trouble is that financial capital is having nothing of it.
Obama’s Timmy Geithner, who’s no more than a lobbyist for high finance right in the halls of the government under the present administration, has been there to strangle any hint of an impulse in that direction. And if you think that a Romney or a Gingrich will have anything different in a Treasury Secretary, then you’re seriously deluded. Geithner’s being there is no accident. When the tentacles of finance are everywhere, this is what you get.
