Newt Gingrich has become the target of an all-out advertising and media blitz in Iowa, launched by fellow candidates and others determined that he will not become the party nominee.
Ron Paul is using his money to savage the former speaker. (”Pointing out people’s positions is not negative,” Paul says.) A pastor backing Michele Bachmann is calling Gingrich “a very fine, empty suit with a broken zipper,” dismissing him as “a glib, wordy cheater.” Mitt Romney says Gingrich is “zany,” and has released an ad that closes with the question “With friends like Newt, who needs the left?”
Restore Our Future, a pro-Romney PAC, is also running the following ad:
It’s apparently having a serious impact. A new Rasmussen poll now puts Romney ahead in Iowa with 23 percent of the vote, with Gingrich second at 20 percent and Paul at 18 percent. Public Policy Polling also reports a tight three-man race, with Gingrich (22 percent) falling quickly, with Paul (21 percent) and Romney (16 percent) close behind.
More telling, a PPP poll a week ago put Newt’s approval/disapproval numbers at 62/31. In the new poll, that has dropped to 52/40, and support among Tea Party voters has fallen from 35 percent to 24 percent.

Just a thought…
The GOP started its campaign the moment Obama took office. Over the course of countless debates, caucuses, and polls only one candidate ever had a real chance – Romney.

It makes an excellent point, They BOTH. The Obamanauts give BO full credit for good things (such as the successful conclusion of the Iraqi war) he had very little to do with and they hold him to no responsibility for the things he’s had his hand in for 3 years (the economy, for example).
If BO gets praise for approving the raid on OBL’s compound or for the killing of terrorists in Pakistan with drones, then he deserves blame for authorizing the spy mission over Iran that resulted some of our best tech ending up in the hands of the Iranians.
It’s a tough job, too bad he’s not up to it.

“You do know, don’t you, that America has sponsored more terrorists than Saddam ever did? Americans funded Bin Laden in Afghanistan against the Russians, they funded the Sandinistas in S. America,” etc. etc- Debbiedoright
Debbiedo,
The U.S. has funded more terrorists than Saddamm? Unfortunately you are probably not only right but more so than you think. We not only funded the entire Mujahadeen movement to counter the Soviets in Afgh. but we’ve historically funded numerous brutal dictatorships during the cold war. Other terrorist organizations not so much but the funding of the Mujaheedin alone who some of the later became terrorists- Bin Laden, gives us the possible edge over Saddamm in pure numbers of terrorists possibly funded. Saddamm was a dangerous and brutal man who may have killed up to 1 million of his own people so I’m not sorry that he’s gone. But he also was at one time an ally of the U.S. in his fight against the mullahs in Iran. And we funded him. Politics makes strange bedfellows. Strange indeed.
We didn’t fund the communist Sandinistas though. I think you have them confused with the contra guerrillas who we did fund to overthrow the Marxist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. I wouldn’t call them terrorists though since in my view they were fighting a Marxist dictatorship. Now could some of them committed some atrocities? Certainly.

Heahten: Obama gets no credit for “the successful completion of the Iraq War,” since there was never a clear idea of what the goal of the war was. (Well, maybe, if you count a thinly veiled attempt to secure access to Iraqi oil fields.) He does deserve some credit for preventing a total meltdown of the American economy in the face of mindless GOP oppostion.
If the drone design didn’t include some mechanism to make whatever might be left after an unplanned landing completely unrecognizable and unusable, I’d say that was the fault of whoever drew up the specs for the thing. I’m guessing that wasn’t a guy whose specialty was Constitutional law.

It is the time of year when people assess the accomplishments of the past year and strategize on what to expect and where to invest in the coming election year. First of all, it is going to suck because this race is going to be the nastiest 24/7 in your face pr campaign ever. James Taranto in the WSJ today points out that the Obama campaign is soliciting email addresses of Republicans so that the campaign can send emails congratulating them for donations made in their name. Pretty sad when the White House feels the need for an organized Spam project. What’s next, robo-dialing prank phone calls? Hey Granny, your refrigerator’s running, better go catch it. Barclay’s Capital this week released their prognostication for the year. They suggest that 2012 will be like 1952, 1976, 1980, and 1992. In each of these presidential election years, the economy was struggling. In each, the party of the candidate in power lost in the general election. Those prior periods followed bad recessions and featured declining presidential approval ratings, with employment and/or inflation serving as the focus of debate. Barclays predicts that stock market volatility will increase going into the Republican primaries, subside in March, and pick up once again in August with the conventions.

True enough. And the policy for example of supporting dictatorships as opposed to fostering democracy through the entirety of the cold war was done through both D and R administrations with the exception of Carter who made human rights the cornerstone of his foreign policy. But even then Carter had to begrudgingly support tyrants as allies. Its amazing how many people do not realize or think about this.
DebbieDoRight

Doom – you may be right about the “dictatorships” and not “terrorists” mien.
The US jas a history of supporting right-wing dictatorships in Central and South America in support of American commercial interest in those countries (such as mining companies and United Fruit) , such as:
El Salvador (General Maximilio Hernández- 1932)
Nicaragua (The Somozas)
“The Marines invaded Nicaragua in 1912 and stayed until 1933, fighting but never defeating the revolutionary Augusto Sandino. They created the Nicaraguan National Guard and installed Anastasio Somoza Garcia in power. Then Sandino, who had signed a truce and put down his arms, was assassinated by Somoza. In 1935, General Smedley Butler, who led the Marines into Nicaragua, said: “[I was] a high class muscle man for big business, for Wall Street and for the banks. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism – I helped purify Nicaragua for [an] international banking house.” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt put it another way. “Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”
Guatemala
The succession of corrupt military dictators ruled Guatemala for over 30 years, one anti-communist tyrant after another receiving U.S. support, aid, and training”
Honduras (Roberto Suazo Cordova)
Honduras was the original “Banana Republic,” its history inextricably intertwined with that of the U.S.-based United Fruit Company, but in 1979, when Anastasio Somoza was overthrown in Nicaragua Honduras got a new nickname: “The Pentagon Republic.” In 1978 Honduras received $16.2 million in U.S. aid; by 1985 it was getting $231.1 million, primarily because President Suazo Cordova, working with U.S. Ambassador John Dmitri Negroponte and Honduran General Gustava Alvarez, allowed Honduras to become a training center for U.S. funded Nicaraguan contras. General Alvarez, who according to Newsweek, “doesn’t care if officers are thieves, as long as they are virulent anti-communists,” assisted in training programs and founded a special “hit squad,” the Cobras. Victims of the Cobras were stripped, bound, thrown into pits and tortured. The Reagan Administration claimed ignorance of these human rights violations, but U.S. advisors have admitted knowledge”
Panama (General Manuel Noriega)
“The U.S. command post for covert Latin American operations is located in the Canal Zone where a series of figurehead presidents, some backed by General Manual Noriega, have involved Panama in U.S. intelligence operations. Noriega first met with then CIA Director George Bush in 1976 while Noriega was collecting $100 thousand a year as a CIA asset.Their friendly relationship persisted even after Noriegas’ drug dealing was revealed by a 1975 DEA investigation. During the Reagan era, Noriega collaborated with Oliver North on covert actions against Nicaragua, training contras and providing a trans-shipment point for CIA supported operations that flew weapons to the contras and cocaine into the U.S.”
This of course does not include Pinochet, (Chile) or Batista (Cuba).

Not only did I do a wiki search but I lived down there in the 80s and am infinitely more familiar with the politics of the region than you could ever hope to be. I’ve also read several books on Latin America and talked indepth about the politics of the region when I lived there. I don’t think that I know a helluva lot more about the topic than you. I know I do.
The contras were alleged to have killed 2 nuns by the Sandinista govt who the contras of course were fighting and several left wing human rights organizations have alleged some isolated atrocities. That’s about it. But it was not a matter of contra policy to systematically carry out terrorist bombings or attacks on civilian targets.
You should back down quickly kammy. You’re attempting to broach on a subject that you have not a clue about against someone who has substantial knowledge of the region and its politics. Your ignorance precludes you from a conversation on this topic with the Doom. Dismissed.

Paul,
But has the White House made a statement that the drone is not ours. That is getalife’s assertion and unlike cons, he doesn’t lie. But I can’t find any report of this.

Jeez, Jay’s school yard is out of control and the blogging brats, who cannot even make cogent arguments on their OWN behalf, think they can do so for others.
To wit, I’ll bet you ten thousand Romney dollars that not one of you can produce even one post from heathen today that has any relevant, factual, useful information included. And trust me, it’s not like today is different than any other.
Alriiiighty then.

He AUTHORIZED the strike on Bin Laden. He should get credit for it. If it would’ve backfired and he would’ve failed, i can bet every dime i’ve ever owned that those righteous righty people would’ve been more htan happy to give him credit for FAILING.
Then by that reasoning he gets credit for give stealth chopper technology to the Chinese and drone technology to the Iranians/Russians!

ATLANTA (AP) — A presidential panel on Monday disclosed shocking new details of U.S. medical experiments done in Guatemala in the 1940s, including a decision to re-infect a dying woman in a syphilis study.

Sweetie, I toured the region with the military. The contras used terrorist tactics.
Dismissed.

Thelma, sorry pal, I was in El Salvador in 1974 so I have been an “expert” longer than you have been. And I drank a lot of Mexican beer so I am an expert on Mexico. And overinflated ego does not make you an expert.
