Wow. Newt Gingrich condemns political opportunism?

newttwo

Newt Gingrich, in a South Carolina radio interview, was asked today whether there are things he would not do or say in order to become president. Gingrich used the question to contrast himself with Mitt Romney:

“Sure, there are lots of things that I wouldn’t do. I wouldn’t lie to the American people. I wouldn’t switch my positions for political reasons. It’s perfectly reasonable to change your position if facts change, if you see new things you didn’t see in the past. Everybody’s done that — Ronald Reagan did it.

“It’s wrong to go around and adopt radically different positions based on your need of any one election. Because then people have to ask themselves, ‘What will you tell me next time?’”

I share the speaker’s distaste for crass political opportunism. For instance, what would you say of a politician who on March 7 boldly condemns President Obama for not intervening in Libya on humanitarian grounds and who insists on immediate action …

“Exercise a no-fly zone this evening, communicate to the Libyan military that Gadhafi was gone and that the sooner they switch sides, the more likely they were to survive … This is a moment to get rid of him. Do it. Get it over with… All we have to say is that we think that slaughtering your own citizens is unacceptable and that we’re intervening. And we don’t have to send troops. All we have to do is suppress his air force, which we could do in minutes.”

.. and then turn around on March 23, after Obama has intervened, to condemn the president for taking that very action?

GINGRICH: I think that two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is a lot … I would not have intervened. I think there were a lot of other ways to affect Qaddafi. I think there are a lot of allies in the region we could have worked with. I would not have used American and European forces.”

I agree with the former speaker: Politicians who turn on the dime for political advantage, particularly on issues of national security and military intervention, are not to be trusted.

Or how about a candidate who talks for years about the necessity of health-insurance mandates as the centerpiece of health-care reform, for example writing in a 2007 op-ed in the Des Moines Register ….

“Personal responsibility extends to the purchase of health insurance. Citizens should not be able to cheat their neighbors by not buying insurance, particularly when they can afford it, and expect others to pay for their care when they need it.”

… and who then turns around to claim:

“The intractable problem with such individual and employer mandates is this: once you have a mandate, the government has to specify exactly what coverage must be included in insurance for it to qualify…. This is why individual and employer mandates are bad policy leading down the road to socialized medicine, whether the mandates are adopted at the federal level, or the state level.”

Or how about a candidate who embraces a cap-and-trade approach to climate change:

“I think if you have mandatory carbon caps combined with a trading system, much like we did with sulfur, and if you have a tax-incentive program for investing in the solutions, that there’s a package there that’s very, very good.”

and who even makes a public-service commercial insisting that we take action ….

… but then turns around and takes a diametrically opposed position in the 2011 GOP primary?

“I do know that I’m opposed to cap-and-trade and I’m opposed to any kind of massive government response.”

In that South Carolina interview, Gingrich went on to claim:

“I never take polls to figure out where I stand, because I think my job as somebody who’s been at this a long time, and as a historian by training, is to methodically figure out what’s right for America — and how do I explain it to you, so that you understand how we could create jobs, how we could balance the budget, how we could have a better future, how we could save Social Security?”

I find that pretense of principled leadership particularly ironic, because I vividly remember a discussion with Gingrich back in 1994, when he was still a House minority leader. He pulled out a copy of what was soon to become his ticket to fame and fortune, the Contract With America, and bragged that every single item had been poll-tested to ensure that it had an approval rating of at least 60 percent. If it didn’t reach that threshold, it was stricken from the list.

All politicians change their minds; all politicians keep an eye on public opinion. They couldn’t do their jobs if they didn’t. But Gingrich is the only politician in my experience who could tell you with a straight face that Position A is, frankly, the only moral, constitutional position that a patriotic American could possibly ever take, and then turn around tomorrow and tell you that anybody who takes Position A is, frankly, a secular socialist out to destroy this great country from within.

The utter shamelessness with which it’s all done is, frankly, scary.

But the difference with the Newt is that he’s actually old enough now to truthfully claim that he can’t remember his position even from day to day so he can change it to suit the situation without worry. I think a lot of those old tea partiers are in the same boat given their comments about not wanting government healthcare so long as folks leave their government healthcare alone.

When Newt was Speaker, we cut taxes (captial gains), balanced the budget, and had budget surpluses.

While Obama has been President, we have spent more money than we ever have, the unemployment rate continues stay above 8%, and we are adding more to our national debt and budget deficit than ever.

So whether or not Newt changes his mind from point A to point B, it doesn’t matter too much with regards to the recovery of America. Obama’s decisions and policies haven’t helped us, we’ve witnessed the short-term ’success’ of his policies and we’ve witnessed they have no long-term sustainability. I don’t care if Newt get the nomination or even wins the Presidency, as long as Obama is out it’s gravy.

Gingrich’s positions are not mutually exclusive. In the first he is not necessarily saying he would have intervened, he’s instead saying if he was going to intervene, he would go all out and Obama should have gone all out, too. And in the second he’s saying he would not have intervened. So basically, “I would not have intervened in this situation, but if circumstances forced me to, I would have gone all out towards the goal, rather than going in wishy-washy like Obama did.”

It’s only a change of position if you have the reading level of… Well a typical US high school graduate. On the other hand, if you care about the meaning of words then it’s not at all a change of position, but two separate statements that are related to each other, but not mutually exclusive of one another.

Where’s the column on how “I will close Guantanamo” is different from the reality that three years later Guantanamo is still open? Or how “We shouldn’t raise the debt limit” [Obama 2006] is different from “The GOP isholding the country hostage by not raising the debt limit? [Obama 2001]”

Not totally correct. Clinton submitted a balanced budget for FY 1999 while Gingrich was Speaker. That was approved by Congress while Gingrich was Speaker. You can really give John Kasich more credit than Gingrich for the 3 balanced budgets as he marshalled them through the House.

Then on 11/25/1998 Gingrich announced that he would resign as Speaker and also resign as a member of the House.

Congresss then passed and Clinton signed the FY 2000 and FY 2001 budgets as balanced.

An article in todays NYT talked about the Democratic Party losing the “white middle class vote”.
Their surveys found that the White, college educated vote predominately Democrat, while the working class, less educated, vote Republican. This has been the trend for over 3 decades. The GOP began targeting that group in what was called “the southern strategy”, where they target a less informed, and therefore more gullible voter.
It is truly an amazing to see these people continue to vote against their own best interest…but then again…when roughly 20% of the population has a college degree…that leaves 80% who don’t.
Now, it is starting to make sense……

He has decided that his coalition in 2012 will be comprised of those that rely upon government for everything in their lives (the ignorant poor, if you will) and those old Keynesian/revolutionist remnants of the 60’s, the so-called “intellectual elite”. This once and for all tells us what Obama is all about. He is a who gratifies himself with living as and nourishing the rich of his choosing and ignoring everyone else. We have a new standard from Cain’s attorney, Lin Wood, based on the accusations of a 13 year affair by an Atlanta woman with Hermie:

individual, whether a private citizen, a candidate for public office or a public official, should be questioned about his or her private sexual life. The public’s right to know and the media’s right to report has boundaries and most certainly those boundaries end outside of one’s bedroom door.

I bet Newt is for the moving of the goalposts too. So now, after accusing liberals of “giving Clinton a pass”, the Republicans now move to say its now off the table. So much for those “high republican standards”. :lol:

I am stunned and frustrated that someone who was forced out of Congress after paying a $300,000 penalty for ethics violations, brought the entire nation to a standstill by shutting down The Hill, divorced his wife when she was diagnosed with cancer, and moved to impeach Clinton over Monica Lewinsky while concurrently having an affair with another woman himself, is garnering so much attention from Republicans. The man is a lying hypocrite who needs to be cast into the scum bucket of history but his supporters are too stupid to realize the depth of his effrontery and transgressions. Conversely, Newt is a slug who has spent too much time on the public dole and his spot in history is one of being destructive, instead of being constructive. And let’s be reminded of his most recent mind-numbing explanation — that he was a “historian” for Fanny Mae who was paid almost $2 million from a program that he later attacked as inefficient and damaging to the economy. Primary Status: Eight NH House members sign on with Newt Gingrich
By JOHN DiSTASO

Published Nov 28, 2011 at 3:00 am (Updated Nov 10, 2011) ShareThis

MONDAY, NOV. 28, UPDATE: EIGHT FOR NEWT. Following his Sunday endorsement by the New Hampshire Union Leader, GOP presidential candidate and former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday picked up the backing of eight New Hampshire House members.

Backing Gingrich were Reps. Laurie Pettengill of Glen, who backed Mitt Romney in 2008, as well as Glen Hill of Northfield, Don McClarren of Nashua, Joe Pitre of Farmington, Kathy Lauer-Rago of Franklin, Joe Osgood of Claremont, Brandon Giuda of Chichester and Ken Sheffert of Hampton.

Pettengill said that although she backed Romney in 2008, “I have chosen to be with Newt this time because I feel he is the most conservative candidate today. He not only has the political know-how, but he will immediately put in to place actions that will renew America”.

Interesting Op Ed piece in the NY Times about Bozo and his team abandoning the white middle class worker in favor of a crowd of liberal university professors, artists, movie stars, etc. on one side and on the other side, much bigger, we find those on the government dole, blacks and latinos on food stamps and government handouts. Guess he figures that the foodstamp crowd is getting big enough now as to become a major voting bloc and that he no longer needs the very people who put him into office in 2008 and who provide the very backbone of this nation’s economy, the white, non-union working class American. Well, he has finally admitted that his motives are just what we always have thought that they were….. make as many people as you can dependent on government handouts and you won’t have to worry about elections. I really don’t think that he wants to put people back to work…. the more unemployment that he hands out, the more Chinese money that he gives away to his crony liberal friends, the more chance at a second term. It doesn’t really matter about America…. that never really mattered. It’s just about this sorry excuse for a president that we are stuck with because a bunch of starry eyed liberals that thought Hope and Change was what they were voting for. It wasn’t…… and they don’t have the sense to realize it.

We continue to proselytize about Newt’s bad judgement, Herman’s supposed affairs, Romney’s flip-flops….. I suppose that if someone realized at age 13 that they were someday going to run for the presidency, that they could completely isolate themselves from society, live in a bubble and avoid any contact with any other individual…. perhaps that would satisfy the electorate as to their qualifications for the presidency. I personally don’t care if Newt had three wives, whether Clinton got a BJ in the oval office or if Kennedy screwed Marilyn Monroe in the WH swimming pool. If anyone, yes anyone, could get this country back to work and keep us from going TU in the financial sector, he/she gets my vote. We continually rant on and on about insignificant things while this country goes into the tank. We hold our elected officials to a different standard while we fail to realize that they are just like we are….. people with a past, skeletons in the closet, things that they would like to take back but can’t. Man, would I ever like to have another look at some of the things that have happened in past years. Lots of money saved, perhaps a few less broken hearts…… but, alas, we are what we are.

Oh, and it is no secret that this paper has loathed Gingrich for years – so to see Jay write this column is not a shock.

In fact, it’s a good sign. Jay’s no dummy… He knows Gingrich will eat this President up in the debates. And that’s no slam on our sitting President. Gingrich will eat just about anyone up when it comes to debating.

It’s a ‘no-brainer’ I’ll take the former Speaker over the sitting President ‘anytime’…

Here’s another thing thing about Newt that sticks out…The Contract With America. Newts claim to fame. Here are the “Poll Tested Items”

1.require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply to Congress;
2.select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
3.cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
4.limit the terms of all committee chairs;
5.ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
6.require committee meetings to be open to the public;
7.require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
8.guarantee an honest accounting of the Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting

Damn that was effective…except for the part about dispite controlling Congress from 94 until 06 and the Presidency from 00 to 08…NOT A SINGLE POINT HAS EVER BEEN IMPLEMETED.

Newt is a political chameleon, also known as a Zelig. Zelig (noun) is an ordinary person who can change themselves to imitate anyone they are near. An example of zelig is a person who learns everything they can about a specific subject in order to fit in with a specific group of people. It’s a psychological disorder.
