Here’s one to add to your Thanksgiving list

As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, add this to your list of reasons to be thankful:

From The Washington Post:

The leadership ranks of the main al-Qaeda terrorist network, once expansive enough to supervise the plot for Sept. 11, 2001, have been reduced to just two figures whose demise would mean the group’s defeat, U.S. counterterrorism and intelligence officials said.

Ayman al-Zawahiri and his second in command, Abu Yahya al-Libi, are the last remaining “high-value” targets of the CIA’s drone campaign against al-Qaeda in Pakistan, U.S. officials said, although lower-level fighters and other insurgent groups remain a focus of Predator surveillance and strikes….

U.S. officials who described al-Qaeda as being on the verge of defeat after Osama bin Laden was killed said they have been surprised by the pace and extent of the group’s contraction in the six months since then.

“We have rendered the organization that brought us 9/11 operationally ineffective,” a senior U.S. counterterrorism official said. Asked what exists of al-Qaeda’s leadership group beyond the top two positions, the official said: “Not very much. Not any of the world-class terrorists they once had.”

The Post story cautions that the war on al Qaeda is not yet completely won, but concludes that any threat it once posed has been greatly reduced.

One has to wonder if we had spent $4T in economic and humanitarian investment in places like the Middle East, where unemployment for young people helped spur Al-Qaeda recruiting, would we have accomplished the same thing?

Since Republicans seem to think CEO’s would make the best President because of their business knowledge…have we received an acceptable ROI on the $4T spent?

If a company spent $4T the way the US did to receive what we have, would people be buying or selling that stock?

Republicans are more scared of the OWS folks than they are of any Al Qaeda operative. The OWS folks get to vote and stuff like Gingrich’s remarks and other Republican’s remarks might not be enough to win them over. Perhaps a bigger stack of McDonalds job applications will do the trick. Maybe some boxes of free soap wrapped in “Vote for Gingrich” labels.

Did someone say deficit cuts.

…$3.3 trillion from letting temporary income and estate tax cuts enacted in 2001, 2003, 2009, and 2010 expire on scheduled at the end of 2012 (presuming Congress also lets relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax expire, as noted below)…

We got you deficit cuts. And the great thing about them is that you don’t have to do a thing to get them, by default. And we know how good Republicans are at doing nothing.

They can’t even propose a budget after three years, but somehow have you fools convinced it’s the GOP being recalcitrant. Bring up a freaking budget!!! Until they do, they are worse than “the party of no” because they won’t even make a proposal. They are “the party of we can do whatever we want because the press will cover us.”

Also, waiting for mention that the man who shepherded Obama into public office and raised money for him and helped him get elected to the state senate, Rezko, was just sentenced to 10 years for fraud. They didn’t get him for the bigger fraud he pulled, which was convincing anyone that Obama is competent and not a far left nutcase who pals around with racists and domestic bombers. Of course the press is conspicuously not mentioning Obama’s name in the articles posted about the sentencing. Wouldn’t want to reveal the truth, that Obama only got where he is because of a lot of very illegal activity.

Interesting how the Right criticizes the President when he has done the best he can, done well in my opinion, in spite of their obstruction and mindless opposition. Their behavior is the political equivalent of hog tying him, punching him in the mouth and then saying, “Obama, you’re a lousy boxer!”
The Obama administration has done more damage to Alqaeda, than Bush and Cheney did in their eight years of wasting lives and money in an immoral unnecessary war, and torturing prisoners. By the way, added to the Right Wing’s obstruction is their debts for the unpaid-for war and tax cuts.

You are a fool if you believe this. True, we have made great strides in the war against them, but if you really believe that they are becoming obsolete, you are being foolish. This is the only thing that Obama can run on, and the liberals like Jay know it. They are going to throw the death of Bin Laden in the face of voters, and say “Hey, look what I did.” It won’t work, so please stop trying that route. And if this is the mentality the White House is going to take, then we will be right back where we were before 9/11. A Clinton mentality towards terrorism is a weak approach. They should remain on the offensive and eradicate them all. Bin-Laden was a nobody at one point, so there has to be someone else who is waiting to take the reigns and lead. So liberals, rejoice in thinking there has been a demise, it isn’t true.

You’re right. No one is attacking him because of his color. he is being attacked, not for what he has done, not for what he hasn’t done, not for his fiscal policy, not for any of those reasons.

He is being attacked for having the wrong letter after his name.

If it were deeper than that then the Tea Party would not have emerged only AFTER his inauguration, it would have been a “potent” force questioning the run away spending and the unprecedented expansion of government of his predecessor. No before you fall into histrionics I am not blaming Bush here, just pointing out that the right had no problem with GWB but within days of a D being elected it was “Storm the Bastille”.

BUT, and I have to say but here, I believe that she has also put herself in the front with a lot of controversial statements that deserve to be boo’d. She shouldn’t be excluded from criticism either just because she is African-American & a woman. Now how many times was Laura Bush boo’d? No idea, but I do know she never said that she wasn’t proud of this country until her husband was elected. But I think race gets injected by the lunatics on both sides. Like I said, people who let that effect the way they vote are not mentally stable. But to your point about the lack of respect, it deeply saddens me that people don’t hold their elders, high ranking officials, soldiers, and others who deserve the respect of us all.

Filter- Disagree. Anybody who had “D” by their name was going to get elected that year. The true Presidential election was between Obama and Hillary. Had Jesus ran as a “R” even he wouldn’t have been elected that year. And also, Obama had it easy for 2 years. He had free control of both Houses and when he started implementing his policies is when the backlash began. Go back and look at his poll numbers the first 2 years, they were off the charts.

josef: That is what baffles me. Today many of the Republicans act like she is the greatest thing since apple pie…yet when she was 1st Lady and Senator, she was worse than satan to them. Totally confuses me.

that’s because you’re a “thinker” and not a “reactionary”. Thinkers try to understand – “Is fear of strident retribution one of the causes that moderate muslims don’t speak out enough about jihadists?”

Whereas a reactionary “reacts” – “They’re ALL dangerous!!”

A thinker would see the need to have friend within the Muslim world that understood the mores of the people.

A reactionary can only see his pointed nose on his big head, staring down the sites on a rifle.
