You could offer a lot of reasons for the apparent failure of the supercommittee to reach agreement on cutting the deficit before its deadline of midnight tonight.
However, the bottom line was the Bush tax cuts.
The Republicans insisted on making them permanent. The Democrats refused. And the Democrats had the better part of the argument. After all, everybody supposedly agreed that the supercommittee’s overwhelming priority — its entire reason for existence in the first place — was to cut the deficit and debt.
And if that’s the goal, you cannot responsibly insist on maintaining the Bush tax cuts in their entirety, given that such a step INCREASES the national debt by $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years. You can cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, cut student loans and cut Social Security, but if you do all those things AND make the tax cuts permanent, you have succeeded in making life tougher for a lot of people but you accomplished nothing toward reducing the deficit. In fact, you’ve made things worse than if you just sit back and do nothing.
UPDATE at 8:34:
Just so there’s no doubt, from The Hill:
“Mitt Romney said Sunday at a campaign stop in New Hampshire that he would not support any deal struck by the supercommittee that included new taxes, even if it meant trading limited tax increases now for the assurance that the Bush tax cuts would become permanent.
“I believe the right answer is cutting taxes, so I will not endorse any plan that raises revenues, raises taxes,” Romney said, according to Fox News….
“There will be a lot of give and take of proposals made and yet I will not support any proposal based upon increasing taxes or revenues. I will support proposals reducing spending,” Romney said.”

Democrats actually proposed and have insisted on a stimulus in the deficit committee work.
How on earth is that deficit reducing? It’s not.
So one can make the same argument that Democrats were never there to cut the deficit. Using Bookman logic of course.

The actual facts here are both parties are to blame. I blame the Democrats more, but what matters is nothing was done.
I think the only solution is unifies control of Congress again. And whichever party that is can have a constructive negotiation with whoever is president. In short, nothing will get done so long as we have a divided congress, so everyone is going to have to wait and hope the markets don’t have a coronary in the meantime.

From Steve Benen
The problem, of course, is with the substance of the new Republican plan. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities’ Paul N. Van de Water summarized the latest GOP proposal, put on the table late yesterday.
Republicans on the supercommittee have made a new offer that would reduce deficits by $640 billion over the next decade, according to news reports…. The Republican offer consists of roughly $542 billion in spending cuts and $3 billion in revenues, meaning the ratio of spending cuts to revenue increases in the plan is 181 to 1. These measures would also produce nearly $100 billion in debt-service savings. Democrats promptly rejected the new Republican offer as unbalanced.
When one includes the $900 billion in discretionary spending cuts already enacted in the Budget Control Act, the plan’s total deficit reduction rises to about $1.445 trillion, and its ratio of spending cuts to revenue increases rises to 481 to 1.
Hmm. So, Democrats would give up $542 billion in spending cuts and Republicans would give up $3 billion in revenue — not a penny of which would come from additional taxes on anyone, but rather, the end of a tax break currently enjoyed by corporate jet owners.
This, in the minds of GOP committee members, is a “compromise.”

Let’s just be realistic here…..it’s going to take the COMBINATION of reductions in spending AND an increase in revenues to offset the deficit!! anyone who refutes this is dreaming!! Rather than to argue as to who should have the dominant position, can we agree on this:
1) a two-year FREEZE of the federal budget
2) Run a complete cost-benefit analysis to ACCURATELY (not haphazardly) determine where the cost savings can occur.
3) Combine replicated areas (like military procurement……)
If THIS can be done…HONESTLY…no politics involved….the fiscal ship can be righted!!

The law was going to bring in billions from the greedy rich yacht buyers and then dems voted with repubs to give the rich yacht buyer a tax beak. Why do dems believe in tax breaks for the wealthy yacht owners like John Kerry ? Hell, John Kerry does not care what the tax rate is anyway since he was caught registering his yacht in a differant state to avoid his high tax state. But lets reinstate the luxury tax because a raise in tax rates means higher tax collections, that is a fact isn’t it ?

The number one priority of the Republicans is the financial protection of the rich. It’s difficult to imagine how they could make this more obvious. And, because they are ready, willing and hoping the 2012 election will make them able, cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicade will be a priority if this becomes necessary to protect the rich. The Republicans are not trying in any way to hide the fact they are the party of the rich and could not possibly care less for the middle class and poor. Why, because of this, they still have so many middle class supporters is beyond my understanding. Do millions of Americans have a “I want to be broke and out in the street” wish?

“You can cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, cut student loans and cut Social Security, but if you do all those things AND make the tax cuts permanent, you have succeeded in making life tougher for a lot of people but you accomplished nothing toward reducing the deficit.”
Nonsense.
Federal government spending rises 7.5% per year if NO changes are made at all. Cutting spending by $3T over the next 10 years actually just lowers the INCREASE in spending over that time. I’m not opposed to letting the Bush tax cuts expire, but lack of revenue is not the problem in comparison to out-of-control entitlement spending.
Revenue should drive spending. Everyone (individuals, corporations, local and state governments) look at their revenue and base their spending on that. The federal government decides what it wants to spend first and then tries to get its revenue to match that, and continues to fail miserably. The position the left should be taking is this: “since the American taxpayers aren’t willing, based on the people they send to Washington, to spend any more than they are, we are forced to restructure entitlements. Then the decision will be with the American people: they can either accept the cuts or send people to Washington who will demand more revenue. But this continued game of spending money we don’t have must end.”
Let the American people decide if they really want to pay the cost of government we have now. I can live with whatever decision they make. But please stop whining about how the Republicans won’t raise revenues to cover the ridiculous level of spending in Washington. Besides being mathematically impossible, it would destory what’s left of our economy. Nothing being proposed by either side even comes close.

The Republican party induces a severe case of know-it-all-itis. They encourage average citizens to believe they know more about climate change based on a couple of googles than people who have spent years in the field and actually know what they’re talking about.
This is why they don’t care if Herman Cain is stupid. They really, really think that complex problems are created by lack of ideological political purity. I can see how this attracts certain personality types.

I said it once and I will say it again, when leaders blame people for being out of work, they have no intention of creating jobs for that same populace; ala Newt Gingrich and Michelle Bauchman. For the last three years they have blamed President Obama for NOT creating jobs, now they tell OWS-ers and others, go get a job! Well if there are jobs to be gotten, why are they blaming the president? The curtain hiding the Wizard Republican Party has been ripped for all to see. Not only is deficit reduction not the intent of the Republican Party, neither is job creation.
According to Senator John Kerry who appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday, Republicans will admit off- the-record that they believe that they will win all three branches in 2012 and want to wait until then and do what they want to do.
I don’t think the OWS-ers that were insulted by Gingrich and Bauchman will be voting for that party. At least I hope not.

2,. The unfunded liability of Medicare alone is in the tens of trillions of dollars.
Given those 2 facts, I wouldn’t say “we have a spending problem” is just a bumper sticker slogan. If Congress refuses to lead in a representative way, maybe we should leave a representative form of government and move to a straight democracy. I find the republican comments here interesting. You are stating we have a spending problem not a revenue problem and it is the democrats fault. But, with the failure of the super committee spending cuts with no revenue will be automatic. It is the republicans more so than the democrats that do not want to see these automatic cuts. I can guarantee during the course of this year the republican house will do whatever it can to reinstate at least half of the spending to be cut. Do you really believe they want to go home and inform the 500 workers in the local factory they will be out of a job within a year because of the loss of military/government contracts.
So since the spending cuts will be automatic your arguments are very weak. Personally, I am very happy this failed. If we are going to cut government without increasing revenue, this is the way it should be done.
And I am still amazed at the hatred for Obama, between his continually cutting taxes and now the president who will have cut government more than the last 5 republicans combined, he should be your hero.

Lets see…… Siga Technologies. Ring a bell, libs? Seems that Ronald Perelman, the controlling stock holder of the company donated about 300K to Bozo’s re-election campaign and also donated about 50K to his Immacualtion. Siga is the company who, without competitive bidding, was given a 453M dollar loan guarantee by the Democrats to supply us with small pox vaccine. This vaccine has never been tested and approved by the FDA, and we already have about 1B dollars worth of small pox vaccine but that’s OK, now we have about 1.7M additional doses, supplied at about 3X the cost provided by other manufacturers. Seems like the last fatality from small pox was about 40 yrs ago world wide.
This is the kind of idiotic spending that Republicans want to curtail. Nothing but political payback to a big donor for a product that we do not need, not bid by another company and a a price that is insane. And you wonder why we don’t want taxes raised.

Actuall the Republican’s priority is neither defict redxuction nor tax breaks for the rich. Their game plan since the eighties has been to defund the government to the point of crisis so they can say, “see, we can’t aford social seurity and medicare, etc.” They have achieved the crisis they had been looking for, which is totally artificial and of their own making, and are calling in their chips. The Democrats have a fixation for tax increases on the wealthy. As far as spending cuts the Democrats on the committee couldn’t agree among themselves, so when the Republican committee members put forth their proposal that offered revenue increase through tax reform and closing loopholes the Dem’s weren’t prepared to offer up a counter proposal of their own. Now their running around trying to peddle this bunk that the Republicans are to blame for this failure. BTW…where’s the president while this foolishness goes on? Why he’s off pretending that he’s leader of the free world and thinking that he has an effective campaign strategy blaming Republicans for the super committee’s failure. This should be simple.
R’s and D’s should coax as much revenue as possible out of the American people, making the case that the money spent will benefit them more than if they spent it themselves. Based on how successful they were at that, they spend the money and government grows or shrinks. The American people then decide if the amount spent was worth the services received, and either send more or less to Washington or demand that the same amount be spent in a somewhat different way. The process repeats.
How did we get away from that? We got away from that by have non-discretionary parts of our government that did not trigger automatic tax increases when the costs inevitably rose. We have a “defined benefit” but no possible way to pay for it. This final result was inevitable. Spending other people’s money, whether it belongs to a future generation or the “rich”, is as addictive as crack.

Wrong. There’s only one fixation in American politics — the fixation of the power class (overlaps both parties) on grabbing more and more wealth from the people for their own enrichment. THAT’s the reason that the only unstoppable impulse in American (and much of the world) politics today is austerity.
By the way, you don’t need an apostrophe in “Dem’s”.

Schieffer, as with other left wing “journalists” are not interested in finding out what the candidate stands for or exploring their views….. only making them look bad. And Schieffer found out yesterday that with Ron Paul, that was not so easy a task. Ron Paul made him look like the “pseudo journalist” that he is.

Really? OK, here’s a test: The holidays are upon us, which means we’ll all be spending time with our families. As we share turkey & dressing this Thursday, look around the dining room and the kids table and ask yourself honestly: This is who I want running the country? This is who I want playing foreign-policy chess with Iran and N. Korea and Russia and Venezuela and everyone else?
No. I love my family, but there’s a reason Herman Cain’s wings are melting and he is falling to earth. I want smart people running my government, people who know more than me on their own–not just those who pledge to appoint smart people around them. Because unless your decision-making is grounded with a solid foundation of your own knowledge, how do you know when you’re being gamed, even–sometimes, yes, especially–by those “friends” you appointed?
We don’t need Joe the Plumber running the country. We need smart folks who understand that our government is designed to function through compromise.

It is time to give up the party line and do what is right for the people. we need smaller government that is less intrusive in our lives and our business. For goodness sake, people Boo-ed Obama’s wife at a sporting event. That should tell you the discontent among average americans, regardless of their background.
Neither party is right in this fight 100%. I wish for my children that we would pass a balanced budget ammendment that LIMITED the power of our government to decide the winners and losers in our society.

You don’t get to this level by being stupid. I’ll even give someone like obama credit for having a few braincells to rub together. The key element you are missing is leadership. Herman has tons of it. obama wouldn’t know what leadership was unless it came across his teleprompter or he googled it.

We have a massive debt and deficit. You can cut spending, but still have that massive, yes massive, debt that republicans seem so concerned about. There is no way we can cut enough to pay down that debt without increased revenue. It is simple math. If you really care about the debt then you would have no problem with increased revenue. I heave heard a lot of talk about shared sacrifice, but the only ones I see that republicans want to share in that sacrifice are the poor, elderly and children. While saying those that could afford to sacrifice the most should pay even less.

The rate at which the 400 U.S. taxpayers with the highest adjusted gross income actually paid federal income taxes –their so-called effective tax rate — fell to about 18 percent in 2008 from almost 30 percent in 1995, IRS data show. That’s the tip of the iceberg, since much of their wealth never converts into income on a tax return, McCaffery said.
You got that, Republicans. The wealthiest pay a lower tax rate only on the income that they have not found a way around reporting to the IRS. The rest of their income, the unreported part, is completely tax free and yet Republicans want to give them more bigger tax cuts. The Republican constituency is so owned.

Mary E.: And one has to ask, “Why?” Why have they been so insistent that the Bush tax cuts become permanent, when those tax cuts have reeked such harm to the nation, as a whole?
Because they are owned lock, stock, and barrel, by “Big Business” and they are nothing more than paid trollops who flounce on their backs everytime BB tells them to. BB’s sole purpose is to MAKE MONEY for THE COMPANY and it’s board members. PERIOD. They are not interested in the common good of the nation. they are not intersted in the after effects of their mandates and products and what it does to the populace (see Toyota, Merck, etc.). They are only interested in MONEY. The USA could fall in a gutter along the wayside and turn overnight into a 3rd world country, BB wouldn’t care. They’d just hop onto their private corporate jets and set up shop in another country. Preferably one that has zero interest in the common good of their country and only has the interest of their leaders at heart.
When people talk about the book of Revelations — I’m beginning to believe more and more that the W##ho$re of Babylon, (the one who seduces all the nations), is really BBs / money.

taxpayer,
If these evil rich people have not broken the law, what do you expect them to do, donate more to this insane spending machine? The enemy is not those evil wealthy people….. it’s the tax code that allows this to happen. Congress can change the tax code anytime they wish. They could change it in a week if they wanted to. But the tax code has persisted for decades, growing more complicated every year and fraught with loopholes that allow people to dodge the bullet. Keep the present tax code and you perpetuate the problem. Change it and the system will take on a whole new image plus bring in more revenue. Couple this with spending cuts and lo and behold, perhaps we won’t need any new taxes.

Adam: “Deficits only matter to the party not in power attempting to use it as a bludgeon to beat the other side out of office, so that they can run up their own deficits on stuff THEY want to spend on.”
Indeed. See Waninsky’s “Two Santa Claus” theory, which has been MO for the Republican party for at least a generation. What this shows is that the roots of the current ideological wars are absolutely rooted in the contested legacy of the New Deal, a furious effort that’s been underway since at least the 70s to roll it back and overthrow it.
On Waninsky’s “Two Santa Clauses”:
Democrats, he said, had been able to be “Santa Clauses” by giving people things from the largesse of the federal government. Republicans could do that, too – spending could actually increase. Plus, Republicans could be double Santa Clauses by cutting people’s taxes! For working people it would only be a small token – a few hundred dollars a year on average – but would be heavily marketed. And for the rich it would amount to hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts. The rich, in turn, would use that money to import or build more stuff to market, thus increasing supply and stimulating the economy. And that growth in the economy would mean that the people still paying taxes would pay more because they were earning more.
There was no way, Wanniski said, that the Democrats could ever win again. They’d have to be anti-Santas by raising taxes, or anti-Santas by cutting spending. Either one would lose them elections.

Thank you for your remarks, and for your kind remarks regarding my post on this subject over the weekend. (A thank you, also, to Carlosgvv for your insightful remarks to me over the weekend.)
As I said then, this is now or never time for those very wealthy, powerful ideologues who wish to change the direction of our nation. Many of those ideologues, who support little governemt, are owners of large corporations. (Many other CEOs, however, of large corporations are not in this group and they have even advocated for the government to tax them more than they are presently being taxed in order that the nation, as a whole, might fare better.)
As I tried to point out over the weekend, one of the stealthy goals of this Libertarian group of ideologues has been to change the “so-called” entitlements, as we have known them since the days of FDR and JFK, to private markets (if not to eliminate them altogether). I do not think that this ideological plan will benefit the vast majority of Americans. Many on this blog who speak out so fervently against government will be hurt personally if Social Security and Medicare become obsolete, as we know them, just as they would be hurt if veteran benefits were to cease.
I again urge citizens to recognize this. Unless you are part of the top 1% in wealth of our nation, you are battling the wrong “enemy.” The government is not your enemy. The government is you. Have it serve your best interests, not simply the interests of the very wealthy few who have used political influence to try to change the direction of our nation – as envisioned by FDR – to help average Americans rise into the Middle Class. The Middle Class has been shrinking for years. One must ask why?

BINGO!! that’s the bottom line right there!! If only people would ask themselves some of these questions:
WRONG: Out of all of the things that this government does, defense of this country is one of it not the only one authorized by the constitution.
1. What was the REAL reason we would go to war over Kuwait when Kuwait isn’t even one of our “territories”? Why don’t countries like Kuwait have their own armies to protect their borders?
Answer: Kuwait’s tiny army got overrun by Iraqi forces and reached out for help.
2. What was the REAL reason we were told lies about Iraq?
Answer: Lies, really we know Saddam had weapons of Mass destruction because we gave him most of them, during Iraq’s war with Iran. Bad move on our part but hardly a lie.
3. Why did some so readily believe that the Iraq war would “Pay for itself”?
Answer: Who knows, politicians make stupid claims all the time, no war ever pays for itself, but that does not mean that they should not be fought. Think of it this way, If we catch and convict a bank robber, and he serves his punishment, and has a set of guidelines (parole) to follow; but choses not to. Do we let him continue to do what he wants or do we punish him again?
4. If it is for “Humanitarian” reasons that we are STILL in Afghanistan, then why are we not in countries like Equatorial Guinea (HINT: OIL, Burkina Faso, Algeria, China, Zimbabwe, North Korea, etc.
Answer: It’s not humanitarian, but we did go in and eliminate the Government, so we have an obligation to stabilize the country as best we can, and then get out. We cannot and should not try to nation build in Afgahanistan.

REPORT: U.S. Military Spending Has Almost Doubled Since 2001
A new report released today by SIPRI, a Swedish-based think tank, reveals that U.S. military spending has almost doubled since 2001. The U.S. spent an astounding $698 billion on the military last year, an 81% increase over the last decade.
U.S. spending on the military last year far exceeded any other country. We spent six times more than China — the second largest spender. Overall, the world expended $1.6 trillion on the military, with the United States accounting for the lion’s share.
As you’ve seen in the previous charts, that $698 billion is not even the true number. The true number is around $1.4 trillion.

Jay, I don’t doubt for one moment that you’re absolutely right…the GOP was never going to allow tax increases to be part of a plan to cut the deficit.
But do you honestly think for one moment that the Democrats were ever going to agree to any real spending cuts? The best they ever proposed were slight reductions in spending INCREASES.
Both parties are blaming the other for the failure of the supercomittee, and they’re both absolutely right.
At first, I thought the supercommittee idea was a good one…especially with all those mandatory spending cuts that were “going to happen” automatically if an agreement couldn’t be reached…but as soon as we saw the makeup of the committee, we pretty much knew that nothing was going to get done. And I’ll bet you those “automatic spending cuts” have about as much chance of actually happening as Obamacare does of actually saving money, like we were promised.

And they shouldn’t until cuts in spending and caps on “mandated growth” programs are put into place. The deficit is not due to lack of revenue, it is due to spending growth by entitlement programs. Not defense. Do the research then shut up.

How does this fit with your Alice in Wonderland “reality”, Stevie:
The rate at which the 400 U.S. taxpayers with the highest adjusted gross income actually paid federal income taxes –their so-called effective tax rate — fell to about 18 percent in 2008 from almost 30 percent in 1995, IRS data show. That’s the tip of the iceberg, since much of their wealth never converts into income on a tax return, McCaffery said.

Tax rates on the wealthiest have dropped from 30 percent to 18 percent on the money that the wealthiest bother to report as income while their after tax earnings have corresponding grown by several hundred percent over the same time period. What more do you want. Will you ever be satisfied. Do you want to see people here in the US selling organs as some do in India. Your selfishness knows no bounds, does it. Twenty five hedge fund managers made an average of one billion dollars each in one year and you not only think that they earned it but that they pay too much taxes even if it is as low as one percent in some cases. So, what do your links say about that. Does it tell us all about how half of the wage earners pay no income tax in any given year and therefore they are bums. My daughter paid no income taxes last year on the few thousand dollars she earned while working a part-time minimum wage job and attending college full time but she did pay her payroll taxes and got no tax credits. I’m sure she is just the most horrible person in the world to someone like you. Right. Am I right.

We have two separate problems.
One is the accumulated deficits that now total $15.0 trillion. In the last 30 years due to assorted tax cuts and annual spending increases the national debt has increased $14.7 trillion.
The other problem is the deficits we continue to run year after year.
We can probably find a way to cut the deficits we run annually down to close to zero.
But that has no effect on the accumulated deficits of $15.0 trillion.
At present all the conversation is about deficits. Which is OK, that should come first.
But only cutting $1.2 trillion in spending over 10 years is a joke and everyone knows it. And we will do some number close to the $1.2 trillion. It will be reduced downward as most of the defense cuts will be taken out at the request of the defense industry lobbyists. So we will get about $800 billion in spending reductions. An even bigger joke.
And we will extend the Bush/Obama Tax Cuts and add back that $2.5 trillion to the deficit. And that will give us a Net Increase in the deficits of $1.3 trillion over the period.
Does any of this make sense?

——————————————————————————————————
Believing this way is accepting propaganda that is on the airwaves. Resist believing propaganda with knowledge. For instance, those who receive Social Security and Medicare benefits have paid into those programs for years. That is not being a “taker” in society. That is simply recognizing that government can be an asset, not a liability to us, if we collectively pool our resources, wisely, for our common good. These programs need to be improved, but not eliminated for the mutual benefit of most Middle Class Americans.

True: So the liberal economic experts on this blog argue that allowing people to keep their property has “reeked harm to the nation”.
The only think that is “reeking harm to the nation” is the existence of a majority of takers in this society. Those who contribute little, but take much.
You mean the Big Oil companies (big subsidy takers); the farmers, (Corn subsidies), Wall Street (Bail outs), etc?

the whole thing is a sham. We need massive reform and neither side is serious. We need deficit reduction equal to 10 times what they are quibbling about. The Dem’s offer no real spending reductions and the Repub’s say we won’t give you any more money to squander. And don’t say the Dem’s are negotiating in good faith; there has not been a serious effort from either side to solve our issues. Every proposal from the Dem’s has been based on voodoo economics and the reductions are only slowing growth rates in the future, not real reductions now. I hate to say it but the only answer I can see is to put in a national Sales tax to service the debt. As our debt service cost rises, so would the tax. I can hear the cries now, it will hit the poor unfairly, and to an extent I agree, but until everyone understands that the debt belongs to all of us, and participates in the solution, we will never get out from under it. Since we all, as collective citizens of this country created this issue, then it is up to all of us to get us out of it and it is clear that the current crop of politicians is incalpable of dealing with it.

For those of you that can’t see the forest for the trees, actually the Republican’s priority is neither defict reduction nor tax breaks for the rich. Their game plan since the eighties has been to defund the government to the point of crisis so they can say, “see, we can’t afford social seurity and medicare, etc.” They have achieved the crisis they had been looking for, which is totally artificial and of their own making, and are calling in their chips. This explains the rise of the Tea Party as the enforcers. The sooner Americans see their game of backdoor cuts to entitlements (they know they can’t openly peddle that crap, see Paul Ryan’s plan) the sooner we can start getting back on track.

Jay… I don’t know how you can logically and impassively look at a the amount of revenue the government takes in and think that we have a revenue problem.
I don’t know how you can look at your paycheck, and the taxes that you pay, and think, “You know… I ought to pay more taxes. Sure, I’d rather do something noble with it. But the government can spend that money much more wisely than I can.”
We have a spending problem – not a revenue problem. The answer isn’t to give the government even more money.
It’s like taking an alcoholic to a bar or taking a compulsive over-eater to Golden Corral. Giving a person with an uncontrolled gambling problem an unlimited line of credit at a casino makes as much sense as giving the government even more money.

If my spouse consistently spends more that I make, I will not always be able to make more money to cover this phenomena….an inability compounded by my aging as well as by the (in the case of government) the explosion of baby boomers about to hit the SS and Medcare/caid) rolls in the next 20 years…

Stevie Ray: My question for you is who and how much is going to be needed to pay for the more costly of the mentioned issues? Government needs to stay out of womens wombs (rape by any other name), provide equal access etcetera but when 10% already pay 70% of the taxes to support the costly bits, when does it end?
There is no simple answer to your first question, because it is impossible to equally share the burden of taxes among such vastly unequal income distributions unless you ignore all morality and start thinking “flat tax” or “fair tax,” both of which provide an even more unequal measure of shared burden.
The best solution is to think of a way to create a scale that slides with the income. If the massive amount of income goes to the top, then the top should have the larger share of the burden. But when 50% of the US population lives at or below the poverty level, why do you guys constantly b*tch about 47% (now 45%) not being able to pay taxes? If you want them to pay taxes you need to somehow find a way to make sure they are capable of it, or at least provide VASTLY more opportunity for a continued upward mobility than has been provided over the past decade or so.
No, I am not saying government should take total and sole control of this, but I am saying that when you look at WHY 47% (now 45%) do not have federal income tax liability, you find pretty easily that it is because they are IN POVERTY. And spare me the “they have cell phones and refrigerators” nonsense. Only if you think taxes should be paid in taking away communication devices and food storage devices, and you want to make THAT case, do I want to hear that bit of nonsense.
So to answer your question, it ends when people are making enough to be able to afford to chip in more. OR when people that are supported traditionally by conservatives reach such a critical mass that they can create their own version of fair, where 10% pay 10% of the taxes and the other 90% pay the other 90% of taxes, regardless of whether or not they get to continue to eat, have shelter, or be able to communicate with job offers.

In 1995 Clinton et al actually pushed banks beyond loaning to low income folks without sufficient income and pushed quotas of lending to same. With the quotas in place, banks ended up having to offer no money down, income verification that included that of other occupants (parents, children, food stamps et al) and sources of income to qualify. Even in the face of his own data indicating that the “affordable mortgage loans” provided via CRA had higher than normal, no action was taken. Cisneros and subsequently Cuomo had HUD no longer require that a borrow prove five years of stable income….Lot’s of data to support this point.

Federal Reserve Board data show that:
More than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions.
Private firms made nearly 83 percent of the subprime loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers that year.
Only one of the top 25 subprime lenders in 2006 was directly subject to the housing law that’s being lambasted by conservative critics.

I quickly glanced over the posts and I am left with the impression, based on your posts, that I do not know you and that is a fair statement. However, I do not recall your making any explicit statements to the effect that my characterization of you is in no way, in whole or in part, accurate. Nor did you offer any self-characterization. However we have both presented links for starting points. Further, I’ll take the position of favoring higher taxation of the wealthiest and you can take the position of higher taxation of the poorest if you like and we can attempt to progress from there. Where would you like to start. We could attempt to agree on the government’s involvement in society and even go so far as to proclaim that some level of defense spending is appropriate. We could also agree that we do indeed have a debt of about 15 trillion that has to be paid for and that we have a deficit of about one trillion that must be eliminated. How about that for starters. I’ll let you review and offer up the next round. Fair enough. However, ground control may or may not be able to find me at any given instant so be warned.

Adam, one of these days you will learn the rules of supergeneralizations….. when you see something and make an assumption about their status and class, you can then extrapolate that to the entire group. Therefore a single person who fits my preconceived perception becomes “they” and with that code word, it covers “everyone”. To properly conclude a supergeneralization, a “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” is understood with the “look”.

“Deficit reduction” is democrat-code for “tax increase.” Republicans rationally believe the Obama stimulus is a proven failure, and that the continued government-consumption of seed capital is destructive to the economy. Republican goal has generally paralleled the conservative goals, curtailing wasteful spending. As democrats are addicted to wasteful spending, an agreed resolution is highly unlikely.

Yes, I care deeply about my Country. But…and perhaps you should sit down for this…..I disagree with you on what is at the root of our problems AND what we should view as solutions.
Now take a deep breath because I know that is a lot to absorb, that someone would actually disagree with you, but it is possible. In fact I’d say that roughly half of the people of this country disagree with you (which if you can follow the logic means that roughly half of the people of this country disagree with me.) The catch is that I don’t feel the need to question the patriotism of those that disagree with me, or to call them stupid, or ignorant, or uninformed, or dangerous, or bought off by welfare or any of the others things I see (and hear) those on the right do with a constant drumbeat.
You see, I agree that there are things happening that are dangerous to the republic, and chief among them are people like you. People that want things their way or no way. No room for dissenting opinions only dogma and cheap slogans about “we have a spending problem” (which is partially true, in fact it’s one half of the problem.) and a complete unwillingness to understand that compromise is not an dirty word, but the foundation upon which this Country was built.
But for now, it is your strident nature and your parroting of the right wing sound machine without even a firm grasp of what they are talking about, that makes you so funny.

And a solution would be to focus there, and there alone? It’s hardly the cause of our debt. Even if you managed to get a little bit more out of the poor, it would not be significant because they don’t have that much to give in the first place. And it would be morally reprehensible to try.
I mean, think about it. Greed at the top is what caused us to think we could get away with he government policies that led to people getting knocked further down the totem pole unexpectedly, higher tuition costs, etc. I have no desire to reward such greed, especially when the alternative is apparently to take from those who have been pushed around for decades.

ADAM,
I don’t think any of those are solely to blame but Jesse Jackson and the others would sue (and in other industries continue to do same) mortgage companies alledging racism since only a small percentage of loans went to low income folks. Part of the settlements (since too expensive to litigate, especially when Feds started doing the same thing) was an earmarked amount required to be loaned to low income folks….very few of which qualified by conventional metrics..
DEBBIE..you can google any one of them and if you have an open mind beyond that which you are already pre-disposed, you may be able to understand why these arguments are more complex than ” the Cons suck….the liberals suck” which gets boring quickly.

adam- I think a deeper look into your own soul is in order. Something dark is there you’re not acknowledging.
I acknowledge obama is (an always has been) a crook and a terrible do-nothing politician. I also acknowledge, that no matter how terrible he is for the country, about the only thing he could do for blacks to vote against him next time is if he starts publically raping children. Then he would still get the black majority because either they wouldn’t believe the evidence or they would see it as very gangster of him and use it as justification for that behavior in the future(much the way kids doing think oral sex counts as sex since Clinton said it was OK).

The parties have differnet objectives: the right-wing is more about tradition, the ‘value’ of suffering, rewarding high income, but the left-wing is more about promoting well-being.
-unless everyone agrees that the evidence-based promotion of well-being & prevention of suffering should be the goal of every policy then there isn’t much of a debate. Those who support Republicanism are more synical about the very nature of rational, evidence-based thinking, they’re more supportive of tradition not supportive of progression enough, so that intellectual & ethical poverty should be corrected.

Redlining in insurance and banking does occur. However, can you tell me how good a solution is generated by requiring banks to offer a mortgage to one who can’t verify income, steady employment, is a student, has food stamps as part of disclosed income etcetera? Ultimately, we all paid for this crap with the rescue with our tax dollars…borrowed as they may be to bail out those screwballs who used a flawed mechanism to make lemonade out of these subprime lemons..

ACORN held up an acquisition by Fidelity Bank of Philly…in order to clear their objections, ACORN’s demand included it count food stamps as income for lending purposes. A woman name Jaon Arrington applied for a loan from Mellon Bank. Unemployed and on partial medical disability she had been turned down by Mellon for home equity loan because she lacked clear title to her home. But via ACORN, Fidelity gave her the loan.

Jay, Jay, Jay. Ugh.
First, I know a LOT of intelligent, taxpaying, working people who disagree with you, Tea Party types and many others. Second, the supercommittee does NOT “cut the deficit and debt”, Congress has to do this. The Supercommittee, by design, is a bi-partisan gimic to cover for doing nothing in a politically stalemated Congress. If Congress wasn’t stalemated there would be no Supercommittee. And, raising taxes right now is not going to cut the deficit, would likely make it grow as the impact of tax hikes further depresses the economy.
Right now, the BEST Congress can do for the American public is NOTHING, because anything they pass that Obama would sign would cause more harm (or waste) and move us in the WRONG direction.

It’s time for a new taxation model. 20% of your income or 200 hours of labor performed on behalf of Federal, State and Local governments.
If you income is too low to pay federal taxes, then the four hours of work performed per week will be your contribution.
The 20% income tax represents 400 hours of effort, so it’s progressive, which the liberals love so dearly.

Which is why the defenseless rich folks are shackled to this nation and told they can never leave. They are denied passports and talks with foreign nations about citizenship there. We will make SURE they stay so they can PAY!

You hit the nail on the head. It galls me that folks say how high our corporate taxes are, yet ignoring the fact that many corporations pay little or no taxes. At the same time they ship jobs overseas claiming the same crap. Then many of them or some of the ultra rich have off-shore bank accounts that further protects them from taxation.
I don’t necessarily have a problem with them utilizing the loopholes to their advantages. I have a problem with the rich and some follow-the-leader folks going on about people who are not as fortunate being a drain on society and getting freebies.

How much of the deficit did the Dem’s reduce while they had a filibuster proof congress and the oval office? Oh, That’s right. They passed Obamascare, which is proven to cut medicare even more than Jay claims the Republicans will do. I think it is impossible for the government to take funds for A and give to B without graft. Any jobs or stimulus should be generated by the business sector and could be aided by removing the dark cloud mandated healthcare. Drop this kabuki theater and make each congressional subcommittee come up with a flat across the board cut. Before asking for more money show me you can properly spend what you already have. Here’s a question to the more liberal bloggers who rabidly repeat “higher taxes, higher taxes.” After serving my country for more than a decade, I got out (in part cause the downfall of the Soviet Union made my staying longer not make sense – no threat left att). So back I went to school, getting up at 4:30 to study for 2 hours before going to work for a full day followed by night classes full-time (try working 40-45 hours a week taking 16-18SH undergrad simultaneously) and studying till 12:30 in th am for 2 years straight. Despite the workload, I graduated #1 in my class and got accepted at good law school, where once again I worked essentially full-time while attending law school full-time (I was married with a family, had responsbilities and no, didn’t get any scholarships cause i’m a WASP, meanwhile a minority female who didn’t even grad cu laude got a full ride). No, I’m not in that “evil rich” category of those making 250k a year (maybe one day), but I’m doing ok. My question is, having worked my@ss off to get where I am today, would someone please tell me why I should pay more in taxes. What do I owe anyone?
Have at it….

A Dad,
The answer I am afraid is rather simple. You should pay more because you have more. And you owe them because they have been kind enough NOT to confiscate it in the first place.
Those are the only moral justifications that they have.
You are the rightful owners of what you produce. No one else has a moral right to what is yours.

Jay:
Two things; What have the Democrats proposed in terms of spending cuts?? And no, saying that winding down the wars in Iraq and Afhanhistan do not count. I’m talking, real, actual cuts…
Second…Jay, I would like to know your stance on Obama’s FICA tax cut for everyone this year. Now, to be fair, I will rail on a Republican if he jumps on that…see, if you hate the Bush/Obama tax cut, that means you must hate Obama’s tax cut too. The latest figure I saw said Obama’s tax cut will “cost” the federal government approximately $113 billion this year…So, I ask you again, ARE YOU AGAINST extending Obama’s tax cut again?? Because if you are not, then your argument against the Bush/Obama tax cuts doesn’t hold up…
What Jay and a lot of the Democrats don’t realize, is that a lot of moderate Republicans would support a tax increase, not just on the wealthy, but the middle class as well. However, until they show us they are serious about actually making real, substantial cuts, then we will continue to fight tax increases because all we are doing is flushing our money down the drain

Redlining in insurance and banking does occur. However, can you tell me how good a solution is generated by requiring banks to offer a mortgage to one who can’t verify income, steady employment, is a student, has food stamps as part of disclosed income etcetera? Ultimately, we all paid for this crap with the rescue with our tax dollars…borrowed as they may be to bail out those screwballs who used a flawed mechanism to make lemonade out of these subprime lemons.

I have a friend who is an attorney. She makes about $80,000. About 5 years ago she applied for a loan. She was offered one of those “don’t ask don’t tell loans.” They didn’t care how much she made, they didn’t even ask her to verify it. She said that she could have easily told them $200,000 and that is what they would have written down. I can’t imagine that my one friend is the lone exception to your idea that only poor, unqualified people were offered this loans.

A dad, Thank you for your service and for your hard work. You Sir are a great example for the young people to follow. And you shouldn’t have to pay more taxes so that the government public servents can travel and go on more vacations. Not even including Michele Obama’s wasteful spending and vacations of our tax dollars. She isn’t even a elected offical.

Congratulations on your accomplishments. I have a feeling for what you did. After my time in service, I got a degree in Chemical Engineering. Had a stay-at-home wife, three kids and a mortgage, car payment, etc. Worked a lot of 60 hr weeks (and more than a few 84 hr weeks) to pay the bills.
John Galt:
I posted info above that indicates that the US has a more progressive tax system than either Germany or France (and according to the article, some 20 other countries although it didn’t name those countries). I am still waiting for someone to explain why making our tax system even more progressive is good.

Well, Dad, who pays for the courts and judges in which you presumably practice your trade? Who paid for the public schools you attended? Who paid for the GI benefits you presumably used to finance college? Did you attend a public university? Did you borrow money through the student loan program?
Who pays for the men and women in uniform overseas? Who pays for your parents’ Medicare and Social Security? Who pays for the prisons where we keep people who might otherwise rob you not just of your hard-earned wealth but your life as well? Who ensures that the food you buy in the grocery store doesn’t kill you? Who ensures the bank in which you deposit your paycheck? Who built the roads you travel everyday? Who pioneered the Internet technology that allows you to post here?

The Republican mantra has been to flatten the income tax rates, by eliminating the largest tax deduction the middle class uses: mortgage interest deduction for years. The public outcry was so bad this year Governor Deal backed away from his own tax reform proposal and try to blame it on bad numbers he got from analysts.
The National Democrats are not willing to fund the next big tax cut for the rich on the backs of the lower and middle class. End of story.

I won’t try to answer all your questions to Dad, just a couple because most are ludicrious. First Social Security and Medicare were bsold as trust funds. That is one pays in now and redeems that payment in the future. Not quite how it worked out.
Second, yes I got GI bill benifits for my education, but I earned every cent of it (over and above service) for having to call worthless folks “SIR”. In my three years, I met three Officers that I considered “good”; that is on a par with construction forman I worked for as a kid.

Jay, You owe one of your readers (aDad) an apology for your stupid questions. He simply was saying if people serve and work hard for a better life than they should be left along to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Oppuntity and Freedom are the true successes of America.

Jay, as usual, your contention is that it is “all George Bush’s fault.” When are you and your fellow liberals going to acknowledge that our current president has amply demonstrated he is unable to lead…and nothing would change that even if George Bush never existed? Buck up, demonstrate some journalistic integrity and hold our current president acccountable for his policy and leadership failures that have either created or greatly accentuated the terrrible problems our country and it citizens now face.

Real John,
Most middle class families spend nearly all they have let over on their kids. I personally know this (smile). I even spent money I should have been saving for retirement to help raise foster children. I think it would be short sighted to ask too much from the middle class, as it will likely hurt our countries future. I have told close friends, I wish we would get rid of deductions for casino gambling losses and replaced it for deduction for math and science tutoring cost for kids in middle school and high school.

Jay – I wasn’t eligible for the GI BIll, which is why I have over 120k in student loans. I am a true self-made man in all aspects of the word. Who paid for all of the items you mentioned? I have. I have no problem with paying my fair share, but simply to pay more becuase I make more as a result of my personal sacrifice, the nights I worked late missing putting my children to bed, and the goes on and on. Your logic is about as feeble an attempt at journalism as I think I’ve ever seen, but from your reply, I see I touched a nerve with you. You just have to do better, so much better, to justifiy your rant. If the Dems on the super committee used your logic, no wonder the whole thing went down the toilet.

Jay, the GOP can kiss the White House GOODBYE for next eight years. The GOP folks are seriuosly and permanently becoming the big idiots in the United States. Obama can win a second/or third term if allowed by the constitution but it is not going to make any difference. These idiots signed a pledge not to raise/or get get rid of the Bush tax breaks because thet all millions and trust me I will do the same if I am a million, human nature. I am sure and truly believe that, at least 90% of Americans thought the supercommittee was biggest joke of the 21ST century. United States is going to open a new military base in Australia, and how are we going to pay for this……….No New Taxes, read my LIPS. Our politicians have some serious disease, The Idiotic Syndrome(T.I.S.)

Jay – I also noticed that you didn’t respond in any way to my question. You simply tried to shift and deflect the question to something else, which as any attorney worth their salt will tell you is s ure sign that the other individual’s argument doesn’t hold water. Sad effort for a columnist, but I guess it’s kind of what I’ve come to expect from the general media.
Jay, to put it more simply, you still didn’t explain why I should pay more. Don’t the 40-whatever percent who pay no taxes use the same sevices?

So A dad is just on here to hurl insults and assume that taxes are about “owing” something to other people. You want to know why you should pay more in taxes? Because you live here and love your country. If you think you shouldn’t pay more taxes, just cut a check to the government that is less than your yearly balance.
And your nonsense about being a self made man is just that – nonsense. No one is a self made man, especially if a good portion of their lives was due to military service. And congrats on 120k in student loans. I hope you enjoy paying that back to the government – with interest.
