You could offer a lot of reasons for the apparent failure of the supercommittee to reach agreement on cutting the deficit before its deadline of midnight tonight.
However, the bottom line was the Bush tax cuts.
The Republicans insisted on making them permanent. The Democrats refused. And the Democrats had the better part of the argument. After all, everybody supposedly agreed that the supercommittee’s overwhelming priority — its entire reason for existence in the first place — was to cut the deficit and debt.
And if that’s the goal, you cannot responsibly insist on maintaining the Bush tax cuts in their entirety, given that such a step INCREASES the national debt by $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years. You can cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, cut student loans and cut Social Security, but if you do all those things AND make the tax cuts permanent, you have succeeded in making life tougher for a lot of people but you accomplished nothing toward reducing the deficit. In fact, you’ve made things worse than if you just sit back and do nothing.
UPDATE at 8:34:
Just so there’s no doubt, from The Hill:
“Mitt Romney said Sunday at a campaign stop in New Hampshire that he would not support any deal struck by the supercommittee that included new taxes, even if it meant trading limited tax increases now for the assurance that the Bush tax cuts would become permanent.
“I believe the right answer is cutting taxes, so I will not endorse any plan that raises revenues, raises taxes,” Romney said, according to Fox News….
“There will be a lot of give and take of proposals made and yet I will not support any proposal based upon increasing taxes or revenues. I will support proposals reducing spending,” Romney said.”

Stevie Ray: Regarding democratization of mortgage capital, see CRA as well as Alinsky, Jesse Jackson, ACORN, Maud Hurd et al. In 1995 Clinton et al actually pushed banks beyond loaning to low income folks without sufficient income
You see, I see a lot of buzz words there but nothing that resembles any sort of evidence of being FORCED to lend to such people, or that the CRA or any of your other buzz words had anything to do with it. You might as well have just thrown in Soros and Socialism in there.
Still, I’ll try to be fair. Give me some sort of evidence that shows all those buzz words had something to do with the housing crisis because they forced lending to low income and minorities.

ADAM, I think about 12 % live below poverty level but thats irrelevant. I don’t disagree with most of what you said except many of us have no problem with those 47% not paying taxes exept to the extent be both know a certain percentage of them are gaming the system. At the risk of religious ire, I think a solution will ultimately come down to population control. No amount of taxation will be able to sustain the growth of those needing assistance, senior demographics also accounted for…

Which is why the defenseless rich folks are shackled to this nation and told they can never leave. They are denied passports and talks with foreign nations about citizenship there. They are FORCED to live here. Being rich means you are DOOOMED to stay here under this huge oppressive tax code that is SO burdensome on the rich and they can NEVER LEAVE! NEVER! Given that Newt’s response to the OWS crowd was to take a bath and get a job, I take it that pretty much sums up his interpretation of the GOP’s jobs agenda. I don’t even believe he’ll need to push for legislation to cover that one. Then again, even some of the wall street traders were kind enough to offer up McDonald’s applications. I wonder if those traders understand the entirety of their support of trickle down economics though given that some of those folks they look down on might just be preparing their food and drinks for them.

Adam, one of these days you will learn the rules of supergeneralizations….. when you see something and make an assumption about their status and class, you can then extrapolate that to the entire group. Therefore a single person who fits my preconceived perception becomes “they” and with that code word, it covers “everyone”. To properly conclude a supergeneralization, a “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” is understood with the “look”.

“Deficit reduction” is democrat-code for “tax increase.” Republicans rationally believe the Obama stimulus is a proven failure, and that the continued government-consumption of seed capital is destructive to the economy. Republican goal has generally paralleled the conservative goals, curtailing wasteful spending. As democrats are addicted to wasteful spending, an agreed resolution is highly unlikely.

TruthBe,
Yes, I care deeply about my Country. But…and perhaps you should sit down for this…..I disagree with you on what is at the root of our problems AND what we should view as solutions.
Now take a deep breath because I know that is a lot to absorb, that someone would actually disagree with you, but it is possible. In fact I’d say that roughly half of the people of this country disagree with you (which if you can follow the logic means that roughly half of the people of this country disagree with me.) The catch is that I don’t feel the need to question the patriotism of those that disagree with me, or to call them stupid, or ignorant, or uninformed, or dangerous, or bought off by welfare or any of the others things I see (and hear) those on the right do with a constant drumbeat.
You see, I agree that there are things happening that are dangerous to the republic, and chief among them are people like you. People that want things their way or no way. No room for dissenting opinions only dogma and cheap slogans about “we have a spending problem” (which is partially true, in fact it’s one half of the problem.) and a complete unwillingness to understand that compromise is not an dirty word, but the foundation upon which this Country was built.
But for now, it is your strident nature and your parroting of the right wing sound machine without even a firm grasp of what they are talking about, that makes you so funny.

Stevie Ray: (we) both know a certain percentage of them are gaming the system
And a solution would be to focus there, and there alone? It’s hardly the cause of our debt. Even if you managed to get a little bit more out of the poor, it would not be significant because they don’t have that much to give in the first place. And it would be morally reprehensible to try.
I mean, think about it. Greed at the top is what caused us to think we could get away with he government policies that led to people getting knocked further down the totem pole unexpectedly, higher tuition costs, etc. I have no desire to reward such greed, especially when the alternative is apparently to take from those who have been pushed around for decades.

When in power, they can’t pay for anything they do, which by the way is almost always wrong, and out of power, they can’t cooperate with anything the rest of us need to do to fix their gross mismanagement.
Maybe it’s time for them to lose their strangle hold on Washington, and hopefully 2012 will be that year. They’ve proven beyond doubt that they can’t govern and now have reduced themselves to not being a good minority party either, so what use are they anymore, I mean, besides none? NONE!

Most you can google but the point here is that between the early 1980s and thru the Clinton administration (both administrations have culpability), the far left attacked banks to address perceived redlining without regard for creditworthiness resulting in subprime cottage industry…some suggest banks had to fork over some $4 trillion over time dedicated to loans that had less than 70% chance of being honored….Repeal of GLASS STEAGALL really opened the floodgates by allowing an exact repeat of what happened in the roaring twenties…all due to DEMs and GOP’s financing re-election via contributions of equal amounts from financial institutions…A good book by a historically CON biased author (but has some interesting references nonetheless) is ARCHITECTS OF RUIN by Peter Schwiezer…I will tell you that he just came out with a bi-partisan damning book called THROW THEM ALL OUT….the only bi-partisan activity in DC is insider trading, conflicts of interest, and paying off campaign contributors with our money…

I don’t think any of those are solely to blame but Jesse Jackson and the others would sue (and in other industries continue to do same) mortgage companies alledging racism since only a small percentage of loans went to low income folks. Part of the settlements (since too expensive to litigate, especially when Feds started doing the same thing) was an earmarked amount required to be loaned to low income folks….very few of which qualified by conventional metrics..

The parties have differnet objectives: the right-wing is more about tradition, the ‘value’ of suffering, rewarding high income, but the left-wing is more about promoting well-being.
-unless everyone agrees that the evidence-based promotion of well-being & prevention of suffering should be the goal of every policy then there isn’t much of a debate. Those who support Republicanism are more synical about the very nature of rational, evidence-based thinking, they’re more supportive of tradition not supportive of progression enough, so that intellectual & ethical poverty should be corrected.

Grew up west central, but have lived central and north. My wife’s from Chicago (actual, not a suburb). Technically my address is Peoria now.

Oh, and about that 47% thing:
“The Tax Foundation has calculated the percentage of filers in each state who pay income tax. The ten states with the highest number of non-payers are a strongly Republican bunch: Eight of them went for John McCain in 2008, and nine of them have Republican governors.”

continue to lie or be completely disingenous bookman…….your article is completely false based on your big gov’t mentality and please continue these false templates b/c the majority of the country sees through this and is running from your ilk…….the media is not trusted and neither is your opinion……enjoying reaping what your radical left has sown over the last 4 years……..dem pollsters asking hussein not to run for the good of the dem party is the first sign of the beatdown that is rapidly approaching the dem party in 2012 as was 2010………..the gloves are off after this post……the problem is spending big gub’t libs, you will realize that soon enough

Back Seater: Why is it that everytime you confront a liberal/progressive/democrat with a statement or question they always divert the statement/question to what a Republican is accused of doing
Yep! Every time! Just like when *I* responded to you. Right?

JKL2: I also acknowledge, that no matter how terrible he is for the country, about the only thing he could do for blacks to vote against him next time is if he starts publically raping children. Then he would still get the black majority because either they wouldn’t believe the evidence or they would see it as very gangster of him and use it as justification for that behavior in the future
I especially like how you can say something like this with a straight face and still claim race is not an issue for you.

jay,
if harry reid would have brought cut, cap and balance to a vote in the senate WHICH WAS PASSED IN THE HOUSE BY REPUBLICANS we would already be on a path to a balanced budget and none of this would be happening…..but as usual the radical left plays politics with issues instead of solving them like the house led bill would have done………it’s too easy to expose your ilk for what it is about……power and control……which will be lost by radical libs soon enough and probably not be seen again by your conrades for a while…..enjoy lib

FINN,
Are you suggesting that my comment about income verification et al is hubris?
ACORN held up an acquisition by Fidelity Bank of Philly…in order to clear their objections, ACORN’s demand included it count food stamps as income for lending purposes. A woman name Jaon Arrington applied for a loan from Mellon Bank. Unemployed and on partial medical disability she had been turned down by Mellon for home equity loan because she lacked clear title to her home. But via ACORN, Fidelity gave her the loan.
These examples are per ACORN directly or via litigation…

filter do your own research…….doesn’t change the fact that if dems were serious they would have at least brought it up for a vote…….reid was afraid it would pass and that is why he did what he did…..either way what he did shows the libs aren’t serious about reducing the deficit, which is what bookman tried(key word being tried) to project on the republicans………..i love exposing the mentality and lies of the radical left…it’s so fun and easy filter
