You could offer a lot of reasons for the apparent failure of the supercommittee to reach agreement on cutting the deficit before its deadline of midnight tonight.
However, the bottom line was the Bush tax cuts.
The Republicans insisted on making them permanent. The Democrats refused. And the Democrats had the better part of the argument. After all, everybody supposedly agreed that the supercommittee’s overwhelming priority — its entire reason for existence in the first place — was to cut the deficit and debt.
And if that’s the goal, you cannot responsibly insist on maintaining the Bush tax cuts in their entirety, given that such a step INCREASES the national debt by $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years. You can cut Medicare, cut Medicaid, cut student loans and cut Social Security, but if you do all those things AND make the tax cuts permanent, you have succeeded in making life tougher for a lot of people but you accomplished nothing toward reducing the deficit. In fact, you’ve made things worse than if you just sit back and do nothing.
UPDATE at 8:34:
Just so there’s no doubt, from The Hill:
“Mitt Romney said Sunday at a campaign stop in New Hampshire that he would not support any deal struck by the supercommittee that included new taxes, even if it meant trading limited tax increases now for the assurance that the Bush tax cuts would become permanent.
“I believe the right answer is cutting taxes, so I will not endorse any plan that raises revenues, raises taxes,” Romney said, according to Fox News….
“There will be a lot of give and take of proposals made and yet I will not support any proposal based upon increasing taxes or revenues. I will support proposals reducing spending,” Romney said.”

PS: Where are the JOBS the repubs promised when they took over in 2010?
True: So the liberal economic experts on this blog argue that allowing people to keep their property has “reeked harm to the nation”.
The only think that is “reeking harm to the nation” is the existence of a majority of takers in this society. Those who contribute little, but take much.
You mean the Big Oil companies (big subsidy takers); the farmers, (Corn subsidies), Wall Street (Bail outs), etc?

the whole thing is a sham. We need massive reform and neither side is serious. We need deficit reduction equal to 10 times what they are quibbling about. The Dem’s offer no real spending reductions and the Repub’s say we won’t give you any more money to squander. And don’t say the Dem’s are negotiating in good faith; there has not been a serious effort from either side to solve our issues. Every proposal from the Dem’s has been based on voodoo economics and the reductions are only slowing growth rates in the future, not real reductions now. I hate to say it but the only answer I can see is to put in a national Sales tax to service the debt. As our debt service cost rises, so would the tax. I can hear the cries now, it will hit the poor unfairly, and to an extent I agree, but until everyone understands that the debt belongs to all of us, and participates in the solution, we will never get out from under it. Since we all, as collective citizens of this country created this issue, then it is up to all of us to get us out of it and it is clear that the current crop of politicians is incalpable of dealing with it.

For those of you that can’t see the forest for the trees, actually the Republican’s priority is neither defict reduction nor tax breaks for the rich. Their game plan since the eighties has been to defund the government to the point of crisis so they can say, “see, we can’t afford social seurity and medicare, etc.” They have achieved the crisis they had been looking for, which is totally artificial and of their own making, and are calling in their chips. This explains the rise of the Tea Party as the enforcers. The sooner Americans see their game of backdoor cuts to entitlements (they know they can’t openly peddle that crap, see Paul Ryan’s plan) the sooner we can start getting back on track.

Jay… I don’t know how you can logically and impassively look at a the amount of revenue the government takes in and think that we have a revenue problem.
I don’t know how you can look at your paycheck, and the taxes that you pay, and think, “You know… I ought to pay more taxes. Sure, I’d rather do something noble with it. But the government can spend that money much more wisely than I can.”
We have a spending problem – not a revenue problem. The answer isn’t to give the government even more money.
It’s like taking an alcoholic to a bar or taking a compulsive over-eater to Golden Corral. Giving a person with an uncontrolled gambling problem an unlimited line of credit at a casino makes as much sense as giving the government even more money.

Howdy. Your comment at 12:39 regarding not being intimidated by support of social agenda’s as mentioned is a point I agree with for sure…..My question for you is who and how much is going to be needed to pay for the more costly of the mentioned issues? Government needs to stay out of womens wombs (rape by any other name), provide equal access etcetera but when 10% already pay 70% of the taxes to support the costly bits, when does it end? If my spouse consistently spends more that I make, I will not always be able to make more money to cover this phenomena….an inability compounded by my aging as well as by the (in the case of government) the explosion of baby boomers about to hit the SS and Medcare/caid) rolls in the next 20 years…

Man behind the curtain – please elaborate on exactly how much is the lions share? Defense doesn’t count as everyone benefits equally and remember that tax cuts (as opposed to tax credits) don’t count either as a tax cut is returning money to the person who earned it.

Stevie Ray: My question for you is who and how much is going to be needed to pay for the more costly of the mentioned issues? Government needs to stay out of womens wombs (rape by any other name), provide equal access etcetera but when 10% already pay 70% of the taxes to support the costly bits, when does it end?
There is no simple answer to your first question, because it is impossible to equally share the burden of taxes among such vastly unequal income distributions unless you ignore all morality and start thinking “flat tax” or “fair tax,” both of which provide an even more unequal measure of shared burden.
The best solution is to think of a way to create a scale that slides with the income. If the massive amount of income goes to the top, then the top should have the larger share of the burden. But when 50% of the US population lives at or below the poverty level, why do you guys constantly b*tch about 47% (now 45%) not being able to pay taxes? If you want them to pay taxes you need to somehow find a way to make sure they are capable of it, or at least provide VASTLY more opportunity for a continued upward mobility than has been provided over the past decade or so.
No, I am not saying government should take total and sole control of this, but I am saying that when you look at WHY 47% (now 45%) do not have federal income tax liability, you find pretty easily that it is because they are IN POVERTY. And spare me the “they have cell phones and refrigerators” nonsense. Only if you think taxes should be paid in taking away communication devices and food storage devices, and you want to make THAT case, do I want to hear that bit of nonsense.
So to answer your question, it ends when people are making enough to be able to afford to chip in more. OR when people that are supported traditionally by conservatives reach such a critical mass that they can create their own version of fair, where 10% pay 10% of the taxes and the other 90% pay the other 90% of taxes, regardless of whether or not they get to continue to eat, have shelter, or be able to communicate with job offers.

We have a spending problem; plain and simple! Get off of the welfare “Crack” that has warped your brain.
+++++
That’s a big part of the problem right there. One side only wants to deal with the spending side after they did all of the spending for years. Which they readily admit, but with a run-on sentence always explain that it now has to stop.

Common Sense: Slavery was eliminated more than 100 years ago. To attempt to enslave folks through the tax code is just as morally wrong today as it was to enslave people in the past.
So why are you trying to take more from the poor?

ADAM,
Regarding democratization of mortgage capital, see CRA as well as Alinsky, Jesse Jackson, ACORN, Maud Hurd et al. In 1995 Clinton et al actually pushed banks beyond loaning to low income folks without sufficient income and pushed quotas of lending to same. With the quotas in place, banks ended up having to offer no money down, income verification that included that of other occupants (parents, children, food stamps et al) and sources of income to qualify. Even in the face of his own data indicating that the “affordable mortgage loans” provided via CRA had higher than normal, no action was taken. Cisneros and subsequently Cuomo had HUD no longer require that a borrow prove five years of stable income….Lot’s of data to support this point.

TruthBe: Adam, Darling no ones trying to prevent you from speaking except Jay if he doesn’t get his way or someone PROVES Jay to be wrong again. As for honesty mabe you should look that word up dearest.
Right. You go on the personal attack against many on here, calling them idiots, with very little of substance in other posts, and you think you’re being put upon. Boo hoo. You must be shackled down by Murdoch and forced to post here with your eyes taped open, you poor thing.
You have not a single honest bone in your body. Just about everything you post is a lie, distortion, or attack. And you project all this onto anyone who disagrees with you, thinking you are making some kind of point. I fully expect some kind of out-of-your-@ss “I’m the winner” post about now. You live in a delusion of your own making.
And yet, Jay still scared you into submission. You must really value posting on here. Maybe you’re not shackled down, but being PAID. I hope those Murdoch checks keep you warm at night.

Federal Reserve Board data show that:
More than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions.
Private firms made nearly 83 percent of the subprime loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers that year.
Only one of the top 25 subprime lenders in 2006 was directly subject to the housing law that’s being lambasted by conservative critics.

Raise the taxes on the rich. And keep raising them until they leave the country. That’ll fix everything
Oh please! They may “leave the country”; but you’d best believe they’ll keep their “laws of incorporation” on American soil. They’re greedy, not dumb.

Stevie Ray,
I stated earlier, to ground control, that I would be stepping outside for a while to enjoy this warm November weather and I did just that. I quickly glanced over the posts and I am left with the impression, based on your posts, that I do not know you and that is a fair statement. However, I do not recall your making any explicit statements to the effect that my characterization of you is in no way, in whole or in part, accurate. Nor did you offer any self-characterization. However we have both presented links for starting points. Further, I’ll take the position of favoring higher taxation of the wealthiest and you can take the position of higher taxation of the poorest if you like and we can attempt to progress from there. Where would you like to start. We could attempt to agree on the government’s involvement in society and even go so far as to proclaim that some level of defense spending is appropriate. We could also agree that we do indeed have a debt of about 15 trillion that has to be paid for and that we have a deficit of about one trillion that must be eliminated. How about that for starters. I’ll let you review and offer up the next round. Fair enough. However, ground control may or may not be able to find me at any given instant so be warned.
