The big political news of the moment involves allegations that as president of the National Restaurant Association, Herman Cain was the subject of complaints of inappropriate sexual behavior by two separate female employees, both of whom received cash settlements and left employment from the association.
The story was broken by Politico, which reports:
In a series of comments over the past 10 days, Cain and his campaign repeatedly declined to respond directly about whether he ever faced allegations of sexual harassment at the restaurant association. They have also declined to address questions about specific reporting confirming that there were financial settlements in two cases in which women leveled complaints.
POLITICO has confirmed the identities of the two female restaurant association employees who complained about Cain but, for privacy concerns, is not publishing their names.
Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon told POLITICO the candidate indicated to campaign officials that he was “vaguely familiar” with the charges and that the restaurant association’s general counsel had resolved the matter.
The latest statement came from Cain himself. In a tense sidewalk encounter Sunday morning outside the Washington bureau of CBS News — where the Republican contender had just completed an interview on “Face the Nation” — Cain evaded a series of questions about sexual harassment allegations.
Cain said he has “had thousands of people working for me” at different businesses over the years and could not comment “until I see some facts or some concrete evidence.” His campaign staff was given the name of one woman who complained last week, and it was repeated to Cain on Sunday. He responded, “I am not going to comment on that.”
The story has several levels. On the most basic of facts — two women complained of harassment by Cain and received financial settlements — it seems solid. Cain’s supporters are nonetheless charging foul, with his campaign responding that “sadly, we’ve sadly, we’ve seen this movie played out before – a prominent conservative targeted by liberals simply because they disagree with his politics.”
As you’ll see in this clip from Fox News, however, the Cain campaign is having a hard time bringing itself to deny that the payments were made:
Assuming the payments in question were indeed made, Politico has a journalistic obligation to report them. Such a record is absolutely relevant in assessing a candidate for president of the United States, just as it would be relevant in assessing a candidate for a corporate executive job.
Furthermore, the claim of conservative victimization doesn’t seem accurate. Democrats Bill Clinton and Gary Hart, you may recall, also had to face allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior during their presidential primary runs. Clinton survived it; Hart did not.
From there, however, things get much murkier. It is difficult to impossible to assess the validity of complaints made well over a decade ago by women who continue to remain anonymous, especially since we still have with no idea how extensive or candid an investigation was mounted at the time.
Politically, it is entirely feasible that such charges can redound to Cain’s benefit, at least temporarily, depending on how he handles them and whether additional cases emerge. His supporters are already defined by a deep alienation and distrust of both the political system and the media; such allegations could do more to inflame those resentments than to cast doubt on Cain’s fitness for high office among his followers.
It’s certainly not how Cain hoped to spend this week.

The Politico story says they’ve seen the descriptions of the alleged behavior, yet the story goes to great lengths to avoid saying exactly what happened. Politico’s sanitized description actually makes the allegations seem less serious than perhaps they were.
” …These incidents include conversations allegedly filled with innuendo or personal questions of a sexually suggestive nature, taking place at hotels during conferences, at other officially sanctioned restaurant association events and at the association’s offices. There were also descriptions of physical gestures that were not overtly sexual but that made women who experienced or witnessed them uncomfortable and that they regarded as improper in a professional relationship.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense judgement of a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problems is far more serious than Mr. Obama who is a mere symptom of what ails America. There’s no such thing as a secret past anymore. Am not saying Cain is guilty as charged, just this case illustrates nothing remains buried.
It’s not one, but two. That raises an eyebrow.
Case also illustrates why, in many organizations, people in senior positions do not engage in chit chat, ‘how was your weekend,’ ‘nice haircut’ or anything that can be construed as personal, which can spin into a come-on, which can be read as harassment or inappropriate comments. You keep it strictly business. If it doesn’t involve work, it doesn’t get said. Of course, then you’re coldhearted and don’t care, but that’s not grounds for an allegation.
Oh, and people are slipping. Took twelve comments to read ‘well, Obama….”

Be for real Jay. This happens all the time in the corporate world. CEOs get sued left and right and often the claims are completely baseless. It’s not one, but two. That raises an eyebrow.
I dunno Paul. Clinton had 7 women allege affairs including one who alleged rape and was deemed “credible” by the NOW president. Assuming the worst of what is alleged of Cain is true then he is guilty of making sexually inappropriate remarks. Being accused of saying inappropriate things is a whole lot different than being accused on 60 minutes of rape or being accused of affairs by 6 other women. If he is guilty then it is for nothing more than some naughty talk.

Precisely. GB was warmer which goes to my point of it being unpredictable. Weather. We’ve been studying it since the 1800s, we can’t predict it 2 weeks out, yet people think they know with certainty that its going to be 4-10 degrees warmer in the next 100 years. You can’t make this stuff up. There are people who really do believe that we know this for certain.

It raised an eyebrow because it was two in the same organization. No incidents while at other organizations, which is a big difference from the Clinton allegations. So that can lead to the question of, why was it limited to one limited time in his career? If true, is it indicative of him at just a particular point in his life, or if not true, is there something about the organization’s culture or organization’s member’s attitudes that made making such allegations seem worthwhile?
I’m not sure the inconsistencies of 999 or the immaturity of his world views was enough to shake his standing. One would think this might, but as Jay noted, it’s a perverse Party base.

The righties just can’t seem to comprehend that yes it is possible that a false claim was made and that the accused (or the employer) decided that is would pay the accuser off rather than fight the charges….. its possible. It is also possible that the charges were accurate and that Mr. Cain was guilty of the allegations and that the company paid because the facts would have established the claim. The fact that a claim was made and money paid is that…a fact. The fact that at least twice this was reported and charges filed and that two accusers “made up” claims (as some would claim), acted to surmount the many pressures that align against pursuing these claims, and were sufficient that the company decided to pay suggests they had some minimum level of credibility that surpassed a “laugh test”.

Aberrations in localized weather have already been addressed as part and parcel of the overall changes in the planet’s climate due to ACC.
Scientists often use the term “climate change” instead of global warming. This is because as the Earth’s average temperature climbs, winds and ocean currents move heat around the globe in ways that can cool some areas, warm others, and change the amount of rain and snow falling. As a result, the climate changes differently in different areas.

Sorry but that’s just the counter argument that I’ve seen from scientists who posit that there are very positive and measurable benefits from global warming. All it takes is a little common sense to realize that there are both positive and negative benefits from any change in climate. Surely you can recognize that. But if you don’t then please take it up with people who grow crops for a living. Oh, and if the permafrost disappears from soil such as vast expanses of Russia and or Siberia and other lands then you can add that to the acreage of arable land.

Wow. Apparently you are not familiar with the “Greenhouse effect”? Plants releas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which in turn creates a “warming affect”. Millions of years ago there was an abundance of plant life to suppoort a “hot and humid” climate, similiar to the rain forests of Brazil before they get burned down to make a road. In addition, the atmospheric conditions that existed during the Jurassic and Triassic periods and the gographic make up of the planet further lent themselves to a warmer and moister climate. Hope that helps, but I doubt it did.

Bosch,
I read em all Bosch. My belief is that the earth is in a slight warming trend. My belief is also that man made warming probably is a small part of the equation but we don’t know how much of a factor it is. To say exactly how much or how significant we are contributors is pure folly. No one really knows for sure and no one can actually project that the planet will be 4-10 degrees warmer in the next century with certainty. To posit such is pure foolishness. Rather than reading and believing everything that Jay writes you should take a moment and realize that he himself is not a scientist. Last thing Bosch. I watched a comprehensive study on national geographic of the study being done on antarctic ice cores. The conclusion of the scientists is that the earth is warming. So what is the big fear in all this Bosch? The only huge negative I can see is ocean levels rising 80 feet. But you know what? The same scientists who said this could happen also said that the lag time between when this would happen and all the ice completely melting would be several centuries if not thousands of years. That’s all I need to know sir because we likely won’t even be burning fossil fuels several centuries from now anyway. Or if we do burn them it will be on a limited basis. And if you think the rest of the world like China and India are going to quit burning fossil fuels just because western scientists say its bad then I have some oceanfront property in Omaha I would like to sell to you.

Given the raw data I find it incredibly difficult to believe that you and your entire family are absolutely thriving under Obama and were not faring near as well under W. Hell look at the area around chernoby the world’s worst manmade ecological disaster. Nature has completely reclaimed the area despite the high levels of radiation. And the gulf as well as Alaska have made comebacks from oil spills. I know because I have a condo in gulf shores and the sea life there is flourishing. Just ask anyone who went snapper fishing there last season. The snapper were far bigger than usual.

Also, our addiction to free trade agreements strips the Feds from needed revenue & causes wage DEPRESSION for the manufacturing class. Housing & easy money is what has caused this recession. But long term weakness in OUR economy is directly due to free trade agreements. Obama recently signed 3 of them I believe. Obama also blew 600 billion in a stimulus that was so poor conceived it failed to generate NATIONWIDE jobs. It created jobs for those who are certified contractors for the federal government, but what % of businesses is that nationwide? How has obama dealth with high gas prices? anything? high food prices (ethanol stupidity)? Obama has not properly addressed the problems due to utter ineptitude. He owns this economy.

A couple of points:
1) Any police officer out there who doesn’t have a few “citizen complaints” is too timid and not doing their job agressively enough …………… or earning the money you taxpayers pay.
2) The same is true of managers ……….. if you don’t have a few complaints against you …….. then you’re not MANAGING ! People don’t like being told to work harder, perform different assignments, be to work on time, etc., etc. and LAZY employees (I have found from personal experience) are the first to trump up charges (sexual, racial, age or whatever other types of harrassment there are) to cover their poor work performance.

Little light reading when you’re bored.
Of course nature will find it’s way, no one is arguing that — it’s the effect it will eventually have on humans is what’s important to me — I like being top of the food chain.
But one only has to logically connect the dots to see that these effects (affects? I can never get those two right) are having effects on humans already — every ecological system is reliant upon another, and it is starting to take it’s toll.
I watched a documentary too not too long ago, and for the life of me I can’t remember what it was called or what channel, but it talked about how the planet really doesn’t care what we do to it, because it will always win out — it’s what we humans have to be aware of and do if we want to remain on it.
I just tried to google it, but it’s been a while back and I can’t remember the exact title, but the google searches I just did were “human + effect” and “human + era” and you’ll see some of the hits I got. It’s interesting stuff.

Sexual harassment in the workplace? **Yaaaawwwwwwwwnn!**
I hope the good kindly Republicans here will not let this silliness stop them from voting for Mr. Cain! WHY WOULD YOU? I’ve been working in corporate America for two decades now. Two out of three men who hit on me at work (some more rudely and aggressively than others, but all inappropriately), are MARRIED RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVES. Fully half of the guys who seek my attention for directly-stated SICK, indecent purposes outside the workplace are right-wing conservatives, and about half of those are married.
In the debate over which group has more “moral character” regarding such matters, I have to say to ALL of you: STFU. Nothing you say trumps what I know: There are good, decent men — and a WHOLE LOTTA CREEPS — on both sides of the political fence. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama Presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their President. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. Big difference between Romney and Perry for primary voters.
Romney said he wasn’t concerned about rich getting tax cuts, said they were doing just fine and he was concerned with the struggling middle class.
Perry, on Chris Wallace’s show on Sunday, acknowledged in the example given that a family making over $400K would get a huge tax cut while middle class taxes would go up, but that didn’t bother him at all because job creators need the money to hire more people.
Guess which position will resonate with Republicans?

The sexual harassment allegations against Mr. Cain are the least of his problems as a candidate. “On the details of Cain’s allegedly inappropriate behavior with the two women, POLITICO has a half-dozen sources shedding light on different aspects of the complaints.
The sources – including the recollections of close associates and other documentation – describe episodes that left the women upset and offended.”
I thus stand by my accusation this was an irresponsible, cheap political hit piece, unsubstantiated by any proof. They say they have sources (proof) but provide none. Unless they come forward with the proof (documents) or corrobaration the story is irresponsible, and sleazy.

If that regulation means it’s going to cost me $3 taken out of my profits then I wil have to adjust to that.
Should I shut down? Ummm, no – there’s still $7 in profit to be made. Only a slack arse ceo would shut the doors without thinking through all the possibilities to regain that $3 – whether through a price increase, a discount to incentivize multiple purchases, etc.

As the late IBM CEO Tom Watson used to say “THINK”. Herman’s campaign neither confirmed, nor denied payments were made. Whether payments were made or not is not the issue. A business looks at things from a cost analysis manner meaning, if it cost less to settle out of court for claims that can neither be confirmed nor denied by the defendant than they will pay out, if it would cost less to go to court, a business will take that route. In the cases of sexual harrassment complaints, most cases are merely “he said-she said” with no proof either way. Numerous false claims have been made over the years when a woman, or a man for that matter, thinks they can get a settlement from making a claim that cannot be proven either way. This bears all the hallmarks of this kind of claim.

Paddy, its possible that meritorious claims were made near the end of Cain’s tenure so rather than have further embarrassment they just waited out the term of office. I can’t tell you what those decisions were or what was considered. However, the lack of public termination does not mean that the matters did not take place or that they were unfounded. And no, this is not another Anita Hill unless you mean merely that any sexual harrassment claims against a black man is an “Anita Hill” or something like that.

Republicans governing, and slowly making the wheels of government turn to help create jobs.
———-
House Republicans are honing their jobs message — crafting hard-to-oppose, small-bore bills, shipping them to the Senate and daring Democrats and the White House to take up the mantle of obstructionism.
The strategy paid off last week, with the White House signing on to a Republican bill eliminating a 3 percent tax withholding requirement for government contractors — a rare bill that appears likely to zoom to the president’s desk.
The quick White House acquiescence came as a bit of a surprise to House and Senate Democrats, some of whom fear the president’s $447 billion jobs package will be sliced and diced to the GOP’s liking with Democratic priorities left on the cutting-room floor.
But unlike many past efforts by both parties this year, the withholding bill appeared devised to become law, marrying a piece of President Barack Obama’s jobs package with a piece of his deficit reduction plan.

1) As I said before, if you don’t have a few of these in your work experience as a manager then you probably weren’t a good one. People who put in a six hour work day for eight hours pay don’t like to be told to work eight hours and they can be quite inventive when striking back.
2) As you also know, corporations (and especially the government) often pay out cash just to get rid of the case as it would cost more to litigate it. I have seen that many times when the agent involved wanted it to go to trial but the government caved. Something that needs to be corrected in our system.
I have been sued in federal court twice. Once for “breaking into someone’s home” ……. summarily dismissed and once for a “false arrest” ……….. the 11th Circuit ruled in my favor ………………..

Clinton “survived” his scandals because the media and all those in the Democrat War Machine led by rajun’ cajun’ Carville came to his defense. They went after the women’s character, not the accusations. Compare that to Anita Hill and the pubic hair in the Coke situation with Conservative black man (and Federalist supporter) Clarence Thomas. Who’s side were they on? Anitas! Most Democrats in the Senate did not vote for approval to put him on SCOTUS and he barely got in with a 52-48 vote.
It’s a little early for an October surprise, silly liberals. There’s still another solid year to go. Obama was never vetted and continues to be protected by The Machine. His failed policies are blamed on Bush for not working (and not even bringing up Democrats running both chambers of Congress from the 2006 mid-terms to the 2010 mid-terms).
We’ve already seen the childish liberals claim that the only reason the GOP supports Cain is because he’s black so the GOP can say they aren’t racist (THAT in and of itself is actually racist). It’s going to be a fun election year. Democrats/liberals are up against the wall and they know it. Any non-white GOP member/supporter scares the hell out of them. First it was the Conservative women they frothed over, and now it’s the Conservative black man chapping their backsides. And they call themselves “progressives.” How pathetic.

I understand that not being able to debate the merits of why Politico should be obligated to do something it’s not really obligated to do might make you a bit testy, but there’s no need to change the subject to something ELSE you can’t argue unless you make up a straw man.
I never said any such thing, just to be clear. I said there is no substance. Herman Cain leading or trailing in the primary polls does very little to prove me wrong.

The biggest reason managers get in trouble when they are hit up for some type of harrassment, etc. is that they were “too nice” and didn’t document poor work performance.
If you keep the right file (known as “book”) on problem employees (late, excessive sick leave, counseled re: unfinished work, poor work, long breaks, discourtesy to the public, etc., etc.) ……….. you got ‘em !
Done it many times.

“Isn’t Herman in the talk-radio biz? Isn’t talk-radio part of “the media”?”
Herman WAS in the talk radio biz. And that is NOT the “media” in the sense of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, every major print “news” paper like the New York Slimes, and the lot of them controlled by the liberal left with regards to what “news” they feel Americans are entitled to view. In fact, that’s one reason talk radio has skyrocketed in popularity over the last two decades – and more recently the PJ media: news is out there that the alleged main stream media won’t report (negative things about Democrats, for example).

They are pro-war, pro-corporation and if they really were liberal, like the fake conservatives constantly whine about, there would be programs on with great regulatory, exposing the massive amount of corporate crime and malfeasance.

For both Hart and Clinton ( not to mention Kennedy, Murtha, Frank et al) there were substantial issues raised that became so obvious that the press could not ignore them. In none of these cases, did the press run with a thinly sourced story that was mostly allegation.
The game for liberal hypocrites like you, Jay is to talk about the story and deny that you are trying to be part fo the smear. Of course that’s a lie and you are really an enthusiastic participant in the smear.
As for the double standard you will do your best to deny as long as you can. Of course there is a double standard! “It’s not often that the liberal American Civil Liberties Union and conservative Judicial Watch agree on anything, but the Obama administration’s lack of transparency has brought the two together. Obama’s Justice Department has proposed a regulatory change that would weaken the Freedom of Information Act. Well…..here’s one reporting the leak…
Herman Cain Sexual Harassment Allegations: Mike Huckabee Accuses GOP Campaigns Of Leaking Story
WASHINGTON — Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said he could “almost guarantee” that the recent Politico story about sexual harassment allegations against Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain came from information leaked by another GOP campaign.
The Politico report revealed that while Cain was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, “at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group.”
When asked on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Monday morning if it was likely the scoop was provided by another Republican campaign, Huckabee agreed with the suspicion and questioned the legitimacy of the Politico report, saying, “Quite frankly, knowing some of the reporters involved — they’re not that good.”

I hope that ignorance is feigned. OJ was found not guilty criminally but guilty in civil court….was OJ “exonerated”? You better call Nancy Grace and explain that and any number of her other shows. Was there a trial that you can point too? You do realize that in criminal court its a finding of “not guilty” and not “innocent”. One does not mean the same as the other. You are claiming a settlement in favor of the accuser is an exoneration to the accused?

It’s just so coincidental that this story is breaking while Cain is starting to move up on the polls. Why exactly isn’t the media dedicating the same amount of attention towards important things such Solyndra, Beacon Power, Fast and Furious, etc? It seems to me as if they are trying to release these stories in order to lower the attention on these other things that should gain much more attention than they have. hmmmm……. Wouldn’t want to actually perform journalism and cover things that would make Obama’s presidency look worse than it already does. No. We definitely do not want that.

More evidence that Herman Cain has problems with logical assertions and consistency.
Cain: “Number one, in all of my over 40 years of business experience … I have never sexually harassed anyone. Number two, while at the restaurant association, I was accused of sexual harassment. Falsely accused, I might add”
It’s not necessary to add “falsely accused, I might add” since the previous assertion already states that.
One of my biggest problems with Cain is that he just isn’t that bright.

Guess I might as well not run for the presidency of the US. About 55 yrs ago, while a bit wasted, I jumped off the roof of a sorority house into their swimming pool in a state of total undress, with a group of some rather wasted girls and boys, after an all night party. But if I was a Republican and running for our highest office, this would be front page news, even though it happened more than a half century ago. Can’t wait for the left to drag out hours of talk radio comments that Cain made on his radio show. This should make for good reading and should prove that once and for all, you can’t run for President in this country unless you have been wrapped in bubble and isolated from all of humanity until the campaign started. All of you on this blog step forward if you have ever made a mistake, done something that you would like to take back or wished that that one something that you did umpteen years ago really did not happen. Really? They have? The Rep-controlled House has passed bills to help grow jobs. They are waiting on the Dem-controlled Senate to take them up. The Obama “jobs bill” could not pass through the Dem-controlled senate and this was after Reid changed all of the Senate rules to ensure the original version of it never went to a vote. It’s not the Reps fault that the Dems cannot build a consensus. As far as it going through the House, has the bill even gotten a Co-sponsor yet? I stopped checking because the charade had gone on for so long.

Have you seen the garbage in those bills? Repeal Obamacare. Elimnate SS, Medicare. Cut taxes for the rich, increase taxes on the poor. Why don’t you READ the bills?
Dem controlled Senate? It takes 60 votes to break the GOP filibusters. The Dems do not have 60 members in the Senate, so they do not have 60 votes. If they could break the filibuster, yes they could pass the bill. But you know it would die in the house.

Interesting reading from Andrew Sullivan:
“Jennifer Rubin fisks Cain’s claim that he was unaware of any settlement agreement reached to resolve the sexual harassment charges:
For that to be true, many things would also have to be true: Herman Cain never asked the NRA how the claim got resolved; Cain never had to sign a settlement agreement or any other document; He trusted the NRA to obtain a complete release on his behalf, and the women never demanded that Cain release potential counterclaims (e.g., for defamation); He never agreed to keep the matter confidential — for example, after he left the NRA. (Arguably the association could bind him while he was still employed, but wouldn’t it have had to tell him to ensure compliance?); and in his role as CEO, Cain never had to approve a settlement, was never told the cost of the settlement and never saw a budget entry confirming a settlement. ”

Kayaker, Adam is right. You can have your political career kicked off in the living room of Domestic terrorist too and never have to answer to anything from your past. All you have to do is write a book about all of the lines you snorted, then sit in a church for 20 years, listening to a pastor talk badly about America and agree with him until you actually decide to run. Then, when you win the nomination because the journalists bow down before you rather than actually hold you accountable for your past, your wife can finally say that she is proud to be an American for the first time in her life. All you gotta do is follow my first advice though. Run as a Democrat!!! If you are running as a Republican, no need to waste your time. You will just get skewered.

And I brought my hand up to my chin saying, ‘My wife comes up to my chin.’” At that point, Cain gestured with his flattened palm near his chin. “And that was put in there [the complaint] as something that made her uncomfortable,” Cain said, “something that was in the sexual harassment charge.”
Wow, that horrible man!! He said she was as tall as his wife!! You libs are so weak…

Oh, Woodstock Mike, but you left out what he said next: “It will probably take about the same amount of effort to bend you over, then.” Facts, facts, inconvenient facts. Mike and I wrote it so it must be true, right?

Normal – saw your comment “Off topic, but an old canard from Sean Hannity…”Halloween…is teaching our kids to be liberals…because we’re teaching kids to knock on other people’s doors and ask for a handout”. I guess it would be better to be a republican and turn them away empty handed.

I am willing to bet that one of the GOP candidates leaked this information.

I think it would be interesting to see who leaked this out to the public. I think you will find it was a Republican candidate. It does the Democrats no good to use this card now and since someone has held it for many years why now do you pull it out. I also think Cain is a little like the Democrats on this one. He has never been a person who takes himself too seriously which seems to bother the public more that the act itself. Hart had a lot of that self righteous act on the Democratic side people and got busted because of it.

Cain reportedly acknowledges in a Fox interview taped today for broadcast tonight that he DID know of a settlement in at least one case.
