100 years ago this week, an American legend was born

This week — Wednesday to be specific — would have been the 100th birthday of the great Mahalia Jackson, whom I would rate as one of the top five American performers of the 20th century. Her voice, presence and passion are startling, putting in the shade even such remarkable artists as Aretha Franklin, to whom she is often compared.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “A voice like hers comes along once in a millennium.” Personally, I can’t listen to performances this one without the hairs on my arms rising. It’s been a hundred years since Mahalia showed up on this planet, and I don’t imagine we’ll see her equal in a hundred more.

Enjoy.

Bookman,

I was privileged to see Mahalia Jackson perform in a black Baptist church in Fulton, MO in 1958. She had come down from St. Louis for the funeral of a good friend….. Standing room only, the front yard of the church and the parking lot were full of admirers, both black and white. When she left the service, you would have thought that Queen Elizabeth was walking out. I will never forget it.

It’s sad to say that in today’s silicone botox hair weave musical world even with a voice like hers, Mahalia Jackson probably wouldn’t even be given a second look. Heck, even Jeffifer Hudson had to lose weight.

Cool story, 71.

A far musical cry from Ms. Jackson, but that same thread runs through all of us.

I had a dream,
When I was young,
A dream of sweet illusion,
A glimpse of hope and unity,
And visions of one sweet union

Jay this is an excellent pick and very historical!! “True Legend”

March on Washington – 1963
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (or “The Great March on Washington,” as styled in a sound recording released after the event)[1][2] was a large political rally in support of civil and economic rights for African Americans that took place in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 28, 1963. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech advocating racial harmony at the Lincoln Memorial during the march.[3]

Let’s don’t forget about the great Billie Holliday whose tragic life was made into the motion picture starring Diana Ross in “The Lady Sings the Blues.” Here she is with Coleman Hawkins Lester and Company before her voice became all hoarse and gravelly from too many drugs and too much alcohol. Time Poll: Hillary Defeats GOP Contenders

Hillary Rodham Clinton is emerging as the most formidable non-candidate candidate heading into the 2012 presidential election.

A new Time magazine poll shows Clinton easily defeating the major Republican candidates, were she somehow to become the 2012 Democratic nominee for president, according to USA Today.

Clinton leads Mitt Romney, 55 percent to 38 percent; Rick Perry, 58 percent to 32 percent; and Herman Cain, 56 percent to 34 percent, among likely voters in a general election.

“The same poll found that President Obama would edge Romney by just 46 percent to 43 percent, Perry by 50 percent to 38 percent and Cain by 49 percent to 37 percent among likely voters,” Time magazine wrote.

Clinton — who lost the 2008 nomination fight to Obama — says she has no interest in another White House run.

No md, Class Warfare only goes in one direction, and it’s NOT the poor attacking the defenseless rich.

Everyone really knows that. Class warfare is pretty clearly going on – in the opposite direction from which the Republicans suggest. Really this is just another attempt by Republicans to take terms that used to mean something and turn them into slurs such as socialism, marxist, communism, compromise, stimulus, etc. Emboldened by the success of redefining other terms to their satisfaction, Republican propaganda artists are trying it with “class warfare.”

I’m sorry you fell for it. I hope you get better soon.

It’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the Braves first went to the World Series. It was so exciting! It seemed like every game went into extra innings and most were decided by 1 run. My stomach stayed tied in a knot. It broke my heart when we lost. This series reminds me a lot of that time, and even though I really don’t have a favorite in this series, the Rangers have never won the World Series and I’m sure their fans are just as excited as we were. So I kind of hope they win!

To this day, she is still in a league of her own and she set the bar very high for all in her genre who came after her – Shirley Cesar, Albertina Walker, Aretha Franklin and many, many more. Yes, unless you are into this genre, MJ (NOT the MJ whose death is the subject of the current trial) is a forgotten queen of gospel and spirituals. I think in these hard times a voice like her’s is needed and would be heard. She was born in 1911 and probably hit her stride around the 30s during the depression. That was an era that brought us Babe Ruth, Joe Lewis, and many more. I notice the singers of the national anthems at these ball parks put a little extra in it now day and the audiences really listen. When you hear a Jackson sing you know there is a God ,no random freak of nature could invent that, and a human spirit that survives all. America could use more spirit and less law about now, where is Mahalia when we need ya.

Be glad, very glad, I haven’t found any links to Yanni’s “Heart of Darkness”. Played it one year for Halloween when it came out, and the instrumentals had teens turning away in fear. I do NOT recommend it, we lost that cd by general consensus not because it was bad, it was just too dark for any of us after that night. It was, however, unique in that the music with no vocals was SO dark, struck a chord SO deep, that we wouldn’t do it again – with Bose® speakers and an audiophiles sound system pushing it out the windows :)

It earns my Kudos of living up it its name, “The Heart of Darkness”. So clean and pure for something so dark, it is the darkest of the heart, IMO.

Some scary music for Halloween..
http://youtu.be/wwNAwkulMF0

Yanni took the award and quietly walked away one year long ago for his “Heart of Darkness” composition. Again, I DO NOT recommend it – I won’t link to it- just that knowing it’s out there should be known. Halloween is for fun and scary, not THAT dark. Never travel alone on this dark knight!

As for female singers, some of the best I’ve heard are Japanese, but I believe in supporting our own. So, for all y’all folk from GA, I give you one of our own:

No matter how I comment, rarely does anybody argue with me. It’s a losing bet, apparently. The Titanic went down w/out enough lifeboats… People didn’t want to pay for other people’s safety, even if it included themselves. Rarely do we think of ourselves as that ‘other’ person, and that’s the problem.

This weekend and Monday, I encourage EVERYONE to “think of themselves as the ‘other’ person.” Dress up, think about it, and dance. There should ALWAYS be dancing. DANCE!! If you won’t do it for the children, do it for me. Celebrate!

Actually, the Obama administration not only assassinated U.S.-born Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki — who was never charged with a crime of any kind, let alone convicted and sentenced by a court — but also al-Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, Adbdulram al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen while he was having dinner with a cousin (who also perished).

The Obama administration circulated the story that the 16-year-old was actually an adult “suspected” of being a “militant,” thereby redefining the killing as a strategic success. But the family was able to document that the youngster — who had gone to Yemen in a frantic search for his father, known to be on a U.S. assassination list — was born in Colorado in 1995.

md: I’ve read that article. It doesn’t change the fact that the American people do not buy an argument that the poor have any power whatsoever over the rich. It’s so obvious that the power goes in the other direction so completely that any argument that the poor attacking the rich is “class warfare” falls flat on its face.

Like I said, I’m sorry you fell for it. If class warfare exists at all, it’s the rich consolidating power and money and doing their best to make sure no one of any other class can get into any significant power or money. Throwing them a bone every so often doesn’t make up for it, and the people get that. “Just be happy you have a job” doesn’t work. “Just go get a job” also doesn’t work (seriously, I know you know people who have HONESTLY tried for months and still can’t find work). “Something is better than nothing” also doesn’t work.

All of this is the same kind of thing that has been done for decades and its all coming to a head. You used to be able to actually get a job just by looking for one. Now, there are more people looking for jobs than there are jobs available for them. There are far too few jobs that do not require very specialized provable skills. Companies no longer hire kids out of college unless they interned somewhere, and even then most companies simply refuse to hire ANYONE for ANY position unless they’ve had three years experience in it (including dishwasher! I mean, just how skilled do you have to be to wash dishes?)

In short, class warfare only exists if the rich are doing something wrong. The poor can always be put down really easily if the rich want them put down, as can be seen by fracturing the skulls of your enemies and enacting curfew laws and evicting people within hours of enacting said laws. It’s hardly a war when you can simply wipe your enemy off the face of the planet or make them go away really easily.

The big question is who are really “the poor”?. Most Americans still live better than the vast majority of people on this planet. In fact, they live so well that obesity is one of their largest problems. Many people in the world worry about able to find enough food to survive. But not us Americans, oh no. American whiners are more worried that they can ‘t afford an I-Phone and the rich can.

pogo: A lot of people in this country still go hungry. It isn’t as simple as you’re trying to make it out to be.

Obesity is a large problem in our country and there are cases to be made as to the content of our food being the cause. While I do agree that we SHOULD be able to afford to feed, clothe, shelter, and provide health for every one of our citizens, there are many things we do that basically amount to choosing not to. Chief among the arguments to perpetuate this are things like arguing whether poor is really poor, whether or not we should be trying to make things better for our citizens when a lot of the world has it worse (so maybe we should just let things get as bad as in other countries!) Still the fact is that even if you take the entire US citizenry against the rest of the world, we still have a lot of people who are in the 99%. The measure of how wealthy our poorest citizen SHOULD BE is not something we should compare to someone even poorer in another country and say “Well, this person here is poorer and will die of hunger and lack of water in 2 days. So suck it up, really you have it GOOD.” It’s not true.

Adam

October 29th, 2011

“Fewer marriages, more poverty

As weddings become less common, more families — especially single women raising kids — are living below the poverty line.”

Hmm. I personally see this trend as a good thing.

Maybe once the government runs out of money, we’ll wean our society from a culture of living off the government teat. Maybe young ladies will insist that their man “put a ring on it” before giving it up because they know the government wont be there to subsidize their progeny. Maybe young men will be compelled to be more responsible about sowing their seed.

A Quinnipiac poll released Thursday found that 74 percent of New Yorkers agree with the protests while 12 percent do not.

Which begs the question, what in the world is the problem with the self-abusive malcontents in that tiny majority, as expressed daily by our own fringe players?

Is it a politically induced form of mental illness that causes this complete denial of the realities?

Possibly. It appears to be the same old Republican disease that has poisoned them for a long time.

Yet, I can understand why these hard core reactionaries, who are not exactly paragons of intellectual acuity, are so irrationally enraged. They have been effectively programmed and conditioned to like getting kicked around by their monied betters.

They think that their own flat-lined wages and the unacceptable state of affairs in this country are fine, and wonder what is all the fuss about?

And yes, given the far right wing’s historical animus throughout the civil rights and anti-war protests, when they made the exact same allegations, even their vicious lies and the wholesale smearing of the people involved, is really no surprise either.

But the one that truly cracks me up is their childish lament that the millions of fed up Americans have no message.

But frankly, we don’t need them. And they know it.

They can do what they have always done, and have obviously perfected – roll over, play dead and pretend they like getting kicked around.

The rest of us will not. We will try to follow in the footsteps of the Founding Fathers who knew a couple of things about standing up to corrupted power…

Great geezer rap, Soothsayer.

They look pretty fed up, huh? I suspect they support the Occupy voices.

And I bet a couple of those old timers would even cr@p on police cars!! (And not even know it!)

C’mon, cons!

You’ve been duped long enough, haven’t you?

How many more years and how much more of this will you just sit there and take?

Go to a chiropractor and see if you can get those long unused spines functioning again!

It seems that when the campaigner-in-chief gets a slight bump up in the polls it’s a short lived bump up. Gallup has his approval numbers on the decline once again at 9 pts. down. The lib’s are in serious denial and trying to sooth themselves by having cerebral orgasims over the OWS crowd that has nothing to say that America’s interested in accept for LSM reporting it amounts to nothing.

A reformed skinhead, Bryon Widner was desperate to rid himself of the racist tattoos that covered his face — so desperate that he turned to former enemies for help, and was willing to endure months of pain.

Isn’t that great news, Scout. I mean, someone like that could never get hired by anyone no matter how reformed he was. Now he can make something of himself other than be a loser his entire life.
