More evidence that Iraq, Afghan wars have stretched too long

From the LA Times:

Domeij-165

A U.S. Army Ranger from San Diego has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Sunday.

Sgt. 1st Class Kristoffer Domeij, 29, was killed Saturday in Kandahar province when his unit was attacked by the enemy with an improvised explosive device.

Domeij enlisted in the Army in 2001 and joined the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington in 2002. He was on his 14th combat deployment.

—————–

Fourteen combat deployments in a 10-year military career. (According to the Pentagon, Domeij enlisted in July 2001, before the terror attacks of that September.) You have to wonder what that does to a person, and to his family. Even had he survived, that’s an awful lot to ask of a soldier, and the soldier’s family. (Sgt. Domeij leaves behind his wife, Sarah, and daughters Mikajsa and Aaliyah.)

Also killed in the attack were 1st Lt. Ashley White, 24, and Pfc. Christopher A. Horns, 20.

When I was real young I would think of WWII vets like my dad being gone for four years and think how hard that seemed for them and their families.

But this….

No more. And time to bring most of the rest home from all our other outposts.

I used to go to the VA hospital to visit friends and others back after “Nam. I stayed out until ‘75, so I could go weekly. It Was a way to salve my survivors guilt and hopefully do some good. I hope their are people (Iraqi vets) out there who are willing to do that for our current group of war casualties…

Well, that guy must of been in combat for 10 straight years. I mean, heck, you figure in three years you might could get two or three different moves in the Army. But 14 in 10 years? Somebody up near the top must not of liked the guy.

I don’t know. Just bring them all home. Now we’re hearing from the Afghanistan president that if the U.S. and Pakistan ever went to war with each other, he would side with Pakistan. This after we spent billions of dollars and buckets of our boys’ blood to prop this guy in the cape and the weird cap up? Bring them home. Let those people cut each other into little pieces. They’re going to wind up with a bloody dictator anyhow. We don’t need to be spending our money and sacrificing our youth to decide which dictator winds up on top.

Josef, one of the things you learn in this business is that you can’t make people care. Sinkwich is pretty strong evidence of that, I’d say. We could put this on the front page every day but it doesn’t mean people would read it. If you take an all-volunteer — meaning all professional — force, it means nobody is in fear of getting drafted or seeing their sons and daughters drafted. If you cut taxes even as you go to war, it means nobody feels it in the wallet or pocketbook. It becomes just something else happening somewhere else to somebody else.

Blame the media for that if you wish. But the real explanation is human nature and the way we’ve structured our war-fighting apparatus.

Yep, Jay.

Sgt. Domeij is a true American hero who felt so strongly about defending our great country against its enemies he deployed into combat 14 times. His death is a tragedy but a price I’m sure he felt was necessary to ensure our freedoms, like the hundreds of thousands of heroes who paid the ultimate price since America’s founding.

Yet you, Jay, have decided that “More evidence that Iraq, Afgan wars have stretched too long” is his epitaph.

Do you think Sgt. Domeij would approve?

martin the calvinist

I agree with Jay, (though I once supported going after Saddam, and initially going into Afganistan, I have since changed my position some), any war we go into should be properly funded, period, no questions asked. I’ve always stated that we should only spend what we take in. I know that sounds simplistic but it should be how we operate fiscally.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m not “blaming” the media any more than I am “blaming” the rest of us, self included. Let me go one step further with that, if I may and take my own share of the “blame.” When our boy was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, never a day went by that I didn’t consciously think about it and not a waking moment it wasn’t in my subconscious, but now he’s safely home…”oh, yeah, that’s right…” Slap me in the face and remind me that there are hundreds of thousands who are still consumed by the thoughts…

As for the all-volunteer military…yes, very much what you said “something else happening somewhere else to somebody else.” Put a yellow ribbon on the car next to the “support our troops” bumper sticker and sleep well…

What a shame. This young man gave his life for his country without the opportunity to live a life outside the military.

With the economy having started tanking after 9/11 he possibly saw the military as the only way to support his family and may have paid the ultimate price for the folly of the BS artists in DC.

On that one we can agree. We asked WAY too much !

Which means ………………… we need to spread it around and that:

1) I believe takes a draft
2) Which would never be fair (men & women)
3) Which the country would never support
4) Which means we should no longer be the world’s policeman
5) Unless you have some other options

P.S. While you’re at it, please note that many urban police officers spend 20-30 years in very dangerous high crime areas and it can be argued the carnage and PTSD type situations they are confronted with (child abuse, suicides, murders, shooting situations, physical attacks, terrible car accidents involving loss of life ofchildren) takes the same toll.

“With the economy having started tanking after 9/11 he possibly saw the military as the only way to support his family and may have paid the ultimate price for the folly of the BS artists in DC.”

Don’t take this the wrong way, please, but that connection of “only way to support his family” with the choice of the military as a career is not properly respectful of those who choose the armed forces their lives… I am a pacifist and when our boy made that choice, I had to come to terms with the fact that he was continuing a pre-Columbian family tradition, he being descended from the warrior caste of the Choctaw and his and Unmentionable’s family a military family…there was much more at work in his choice, and I am assuming this man’s as well…

Josef – I do agree that many join the military as a career, my father did and supported his family on that pay scale until retirement.

But many also join for what the think are a few years and then would like to return to civilian life. Those are the choices that became limited after the economy tanked.

But even if he was a careerist 14 deployments in 10 years seem rather excessive.

Three more?

June, 2010–US Soldier Deaths in Afghanistan Rise 273% & Wounded Rise 430% in Two Years

The White House, the Pentagon, and the mainstream media have minimized attention to alarming increases in deaths and casualties suffered by US soldiers in Afghanistan since 2008, the Peace and Justice Resource Center has reported. President Obama’s current escalation is expected to sharply increase the already disturbing numbers.

Death tolls have increased by 273% so far this year compared to the same period in 2008.

There has been a 430% increase in US troops wounded in Afghanistan this spring in comparison to the same period in 2009.
According to the Department of Defense’s data, as of yesterday, June 8, the six-month 2010 US military death toll in Afghanistan has increased to 156, exceeding the 155 total for the entire year of 2008.

These numbers more than doubled from 61 dead from January to May of 2009, to 142 through May of this year.
From January to May of 2008, 38 US soldiers were killed; 61 died from January to May of 2009, an increase of 60%.

From January to May of 2009 to January to May of this year, the toll increased from 61 to 142, or a one-year 132 percentage leap.

From January to May of 2008 to January to May of this year, US deaths jumped from 38 to 142 in the first five months of this year, a 273% two-year increase.
From January to the end of April of this year, 960 US troops suffered wounds in Afghanistan, up from 181 during the same time frame in 2009, a 430% increase.

Total US wounded in Afghanistan for the entire year of 2008: 793 [Between January and April of 2008: 107].

Total US wounded in Afghanistan for the entire year of 2009: 2,131 [Between January to April: 181].

Why has Bookman waited until now to mention deaths? Obama’s just war, his right war, his good war, has been an even more deadly war.

To just say the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have strectched too long is not exactly true. It would be far more correct to say these wars should have never started in the first place. As I have said before, my real fear is we will come to understand all our combat deaths and injuries that occured and are still occuring in these wars will turn out to be for absolutely nothing. I have an equal fear that The Military-Industrial Complex is far stronger than any of us have imagined and will, sooner or later, probably sooner, get us into another war for political and monetary profit. If this is the case, it means both Republicans and Democrats have bloodstained hands and have no intention of stopping this kind of madness. Worse, the American voters don’t seem to have any way to stop this.

You are not fighting a conventional war. Hell, we are not even addressing the elements of government malfeasance which lead to the 9/11 attacks – our immigration system is not effective, nor is the tracking of visa’s foreign nationals adequate – those are the 2 key problems that lead to the 9/11 attacks. You are no using a sledge hammer to bash roaches. It takes a whole lot of sledge hammers to bash all the roaches in the mountains of afghanistan. We have horrible leadership which is more interested in getting elected the next time than improving the nation. And with the citizens split about 50/50 on politial philosophy, exploiters can easily manipulate, with the assistance of a muckraking journalism industry, an election & the opinion of someone who comes to the national stage. Sad. We need to take our troops out of all these foreign nations, reduce visa & legal migration to manageable numbers, and effectively seal our borders. Having a pro-blue collar trade policy would be a nice change too. The Pentagon is the tail wagging the rest of the government dog. It is not sustainable, and will bankrupt us (without manufacturing, we can no longer tolerate the hemorraging of economic/national capital – China & OPEC). Good luck, America!!

The overriding motivation for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are shielded by political smokescreen that the US and UK will run out of sufficient hydrocarbon energy supplies whereas, the Arab and Muslim world would control almost 60% of the world oil producing capacity and perhaps more significantly 95% of the remaining global oil production capacity. The news media reports indicate that the US is predicted to produce only 39% of the domestic oil production in 2010, whereas in 1990 it produced 57% of its total oil consumption. The UK Government projects ”severe” gas shortages by 2005 and it confirmed that 70% of the electricity will drawn from gas and 90% of gas will be imported. It is interesting to note that Iraq is said to have 110 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves in addition to its approximately 15-20 % of the world oil reserves. In another research report by the Commission on America’s National Interests (July 2000), it observed that the most promising new energy resources are found in the Caspian Sea, Central Asian region and it would spare the US exclusive dependence on the Saudi Arabian oil imports. The report outlined the feasible routes for the Caspian Seas oil deliveries, one hydrocarbon pipeline via Azerbaijan and Georgia and another pipeline through Afghanistan and Pakistan would ensure the future strategic demands of the US government. To review the documentary evidence of the 9/11 events, it is not unlikely that many strategists have seen the American Government failure to avert the 9/11 terrorist attacks as facilitating a much needed stage drama for its policy aims and an invaluable opportunity to attack Iraq and Afghanistan – a military intervention already been well planned in early 2000. The PNAC policy blueprint of September 2000 projects the transformation of the American power as an unchallengeable global superpower and the need for some tangible tragedy to make it happen. The paper outlines that it “is likely to be a long one in the absence of of some catastrophic and catalyzing event- like a new Pearl Harbor.”

It’s really pathetic that so many you men have lost their lives in a needless adventure.

[T]he most American people could hope for under the present circumstances is to “stave off defeat” in Iraq war. Mike Whitney (“Come and see our overflowing morgues…..come and see the rubble of your surgical strikes”: An Arab Women Blues by Layla Anwar), believes that General Sanchez is neither against the war nor for withdrawal. He simply doesn’t like losing…. and the United Sates is losing.”

The General is reported to have admitted that “ after more than four years of fighting , America continues its desperate struggle in Iraq without any concerted effort to devise a strategy that will achieve victory in that war-torn country or in the greater conflict against extremism.” Under President Barrack Obama, the global community looks anxiously how and when the promised change will come to America’s failed strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan. How soon, President Obama will be able to put the body of US politics together again after its moral, political and financial collapse. America and Britain appear lost, not knowing how to come out of the self-engineered defeat in wars against Islam and the humanity. Masses have sympathies with the true believers and the Muslim freedom fighters appear to have lost nothing. They had no banks to declare bankruptcy and they had no Bush and Cheney to go down in disgrace. They remain in tact and active all the fronts even buying weapons from the US and Russia to fight against them. American strategists know well to do business in global arms market. The so called superpowers are extremely nervous not knowing how soon they could be replaced by smaller nations of the developing world.

A poorly thought-out adventure without the benefit on analysis regarding the actual prospects of “winning,” whatever that may be.

How many wars will America enter without the slightest thought as to whether or not the possibility of “winning” actually exists? Few, if any, if history is any guide.

About average for what he did. As it’s been said, some units deploy alot. 14 in 10 years means some were very short and probably not very glamerous, but still count. Had to be some volunteering involved. People do different things for different reasons. Some people just like it. (see The Hurt Locker. Its time to wind things down there and let the Iraqis take it from here. Don’t pull out completely yet. Leave some advisors and trainers but otherwise its time to go.

Afghanistan? To hell with them. Let them go back to fornicating with goats and beating their women. Its the only thing these savage and barbarous people know. They are just a damn waste of time, money, and blood and quite frankly the idea that we could ever civilize these savages was just plain silly from the git go. We go to the tribal clan leaders with one simple message. If you openly support terrorist groups like Al qaeda then fine but as long as you do we reserve the right to lob cruise missiles up your a$$. You simply make it not worth their time to harbor terrorists. They’ll get the message.

But if Iraq continues to progress and 20 years from now becomes a beacon of stable democracy in an otherwise dictator ship led middle east then there will be hope for that region of the world. Then, you have to believe that Saddam was preparing weapons of mass destruction when the Iraqis had no real Air Force. Oh, they had those aluminum tubes and that yellow cake. Heck, that sounds as good as any a reason to invade.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I disagree about the “deeper” debt. We owe ALL fellow citizens help if needed, but none more than others. We are all equal. Is a soldier killed in crappy unnecessary war more deserving of help than a fireman killed in an arson fire? Than a cop shot by a wigged out crackhead? Or a father killed by a drunk driver while he has stop by the highway to help a stranded motorist?

Think about your “compassion” for soldiers JM and apply it to the men and women out of work while the ‘job creators” are sending all the work over seas. There isn’t much difference. When these soldiers get out, where are they going to work? nowhere, unless they move to fricking China and work as slaves. Oh wait, in most cases they can’t because the Chinese are using not only slave labor but use children as the slaves and these soldiers are just too old.

Think about it next time you mouth the phrase “job creators” for those rat bastiches that hold all the money and yet do nothing for this Country.

About soldiers:

“I have the sense from time to time that I am not alone, and I suspect that despite the limited understanding we have of events in distant places, there will always be those among us who have the gleam of the quest in their eyes. They are people of every sex and station and they yearn to be challenged to a cause. They will always be looking for that wrong to right, that ill to cure, that song to sing; and there will always be those who will go to arms in aid of the helpless and the downtrodden. Ignoring the political issues of the moment, these people will champion the weak and the poor in the face of evil and tyranny. And no matter what the outcome, in their romantic hearts they will always keep the secret, if secret it must be, that they are better men for having held the lamp beside the golden door”.

Hillary Clinton’s answer when asked on MTP if we should be concerned if the withdrawal might destabilize Iraq: “let’s find out.”

Seriously??????
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Seriously. WHo cares? I care as much about Iraqi’s as they care about me. There isn’t a single one of those asshats who is worth (in my opinion) a single hair on an American soldiers nut sack.

What about you chief? Are Iraqi’s more important to you than Americans? As a republican, you want to cut off unemployed Americans form food, but you seem to be all over billions to make sure the Iraqi’s are all right. Do they feel the same about you? I doubt it. Let me clue you into something that Rush has failed to mention (because his big buddies that pay his salary make BILLIONS on this “war”).

You can’t “give” someone freedom or democracy. They want to want it so bad that they will sacrifice their lives for it. The Iraqi’s haven’t and didn’t. We are trying to “give’ them something they don’t want. When they want it, they will TAKE it. Until then, fork them. They aren’t worth it. We should have never been over there and we shouldn’t be there now.

Sooth,

Actually it was easy. Title of the article is a 4th building with steel girders that completely collapsed from fire alone.

Won’t get as much attention from the 9-11 Deniers as the other three:

About 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at the ESP plant in the Enigma Business Park, near Malvern, which started on Wednesday morning.

The roof collapsed inside the building and flames leapt 45ft (14m) into the sky in a strong wind, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said.

A spokesman for the fire service said the blaze had resulted in a black smoke cloud which could be seen for miles.

He added: “Intense heat buckled the steel girders holding the roof.”

As our buddy Rob, who pointed this story out to us in an email, notes, it looks more like nanothermite; notice the distinctive orange glow. :)

(Yes, I know other steel-framed buildings have collapsed due to fire, but the post name was too good).

Huge Fire in Steel-Reinforced Concrete Building Causes Partial Collapse

The Windsor Building after the fire was extinguished
On the night of February 12, 2005, a fire started in the Windsor building in Madrid, Spain, a 32-story tower framed in steel-reinforced concrete. At its peak, the fire, which burned for almost a day, completely engulfed the upper ten stories of the building. More than 100 firefighters battled to prevent the uncontrollable blaze from spreading to other buildings. 1

During the night the building shedded larged pieces, which crashed to the ground. 2
The fire apparently caused the collapse of the top floor spans surrounding the still-standing core structure of the ten uppermost floors

Read the article sooth. Part of that building completely gave way. The article explains the scientific reason why part of it completely gave way and part of it didn’t. You must also remember that firefighters were able to get water to the scene and onto the fire- something they weren’t able to do on the wtc buildings. Lastly the other buildings did not have thousands of gallons of jet fuel to add to the fire as in the case of the wtc which obviously would weaken the steel.

Wrong again Sooth. I don’t know how many times I have to tell you the same thing. Steel doesn’t need to be melted. It merely needs to be weakened by high temps. Secondly I’m not sure what planet you live on but there were a number of other combustibles that added to the fire. Think of all the paper, sofa, office furniture, drywall, etc. all the different flammables that immediately added to the fire Somehow or another your article completely managed to avoid mentioning the various other items that would have added to an ensuing fire. FACT: Jet fuel burns at 800° to 1500°F, not hot enough to melt steel (2750°F). However, experts agree that for the towers to collapse, their steel frames didn’t need to melt, they just had to lose some of their structural strength—and that required exposure to much less heat. “I have never seen melted steel in a building fire,” says retired New York deputy fire chief Vincent Dunn, author of The Collapse Of Burning Buildings: A Guide To Fireground Safety. “But I’ve seen a lot of twisted, warped, bent and sagging steel. What happens is that the steel tries to expand at both ends, but when it can no longer expand, it sags and the surrounding concrete cracks.”

“Steel loses about 50 percent of its strength at 1100°F,” notes senior engineer Farid Alfawak-hiri of the American Institute of Steel Construction. “And at 1800° it is probably at less than 10 percent.” NIST also believes that a great deal of the spray-on fireproofing insulation was likely knocked off the steel beams that were in the path of the crashing jets, leaving the metal more vulnerable to the heat.

But jet fuel wasn’t the only thing burning, notes Forman Williams, a professor of engineering at the University of California, San Diego, and one of seven structural engineers and fire experts that PM consulted. He says that while the jet fuel was the catalyst for the WTC fires, the resulting inferno was intensified by the combustible material inside the buildings, including rugs, curtains, furniture and paper. NIST reports that pockets of fire hit 1832°F.

“The jet fuel was the ignition source,” Williams tells PM. “It burned for maybe 10 minutes, and [the towers] were still standing in 10 minutes. It was the rest of the stuff burning afterward that was responsible for the heat transfer that eventually brought them down.”

Jm,

I seriously doubt those other buildings that were left partially standing had 110 stories of materials and pure tonnage collapsing down upon them. Also they probably had water poured on them to cool or lessen the intensity of those fires- something that clearly didn’t happen at the wtc. I’m just hoping sooth will open up his mind a bit and at least acknowledge that some of his proof is rejected soundly by science.

Obama is Jimmy Carter.

“HNN Poll: 61% of Historians Rate the Bush Presidency Worst”

In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States enjoyed enormous support around the world. President Bush squandered that goodwill by taking the country into an unnecessary war of choice and misleading the American people to gain support for that war. And he failed utterly to have a plan to deal with Iraq after the invasion. He further undermined the international reputation of the United States by justifying torture.

Mr. Bush inherited a sizable budget surplus and a thriving economy. By pushing through huge tax cuts for the rich while increasing federal spending at a rapid rate, Bush transformed the surplus into a massive deficit. The tax cuts and other policies accelerated the concentration of wealth and income among the very richest Americans. These policies combined with unwavering opposition to necessary government regulations have produced the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Then there is the incredible shrinking dollar, the appointment of incompetent cronies, the totally inexcusable failure to react properly to the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, the blatant disregard for the Constitution—and on and on.

Like a majority of other historians who participated in this poll, my conclusion is that the preponderance of the evidence now indicates that, while this nation has had at least its share of failed presidencies, no previous presidency was as large a failure in so many areas as the current one.

Friends, I know what is at stake in the whole 9/11 argument. If you accept the official government explanation, then you can keep your faith that your government is a force for good in the World and would never murder 3,000 of its own citizens as a pretext to war.

However, if you examine the objective evidence, it becomes clear in a short time that that is exactly what has happened. Not only that, but government agencies like NIST (National Institute of Standards and Testing) have lied and covered up the real science behind 9/11.

If you are absolutely certain that you know what happened on 9/11, if you just accepted the government’s version of what without really questioning it, or if you have maybe thought somewhere in the back of your mind that things surrounding 9/11 didn’t seem quite right, I invite you to watch this full-length (2 hours, 15 minutes) video. These days, when I see the likes of Bookman and associates, the biased flat-liner ‘reporters’ on the so-called ‘major’ networks, and read through the trash once known as the New York Times, Washington Post, etc., if faced with the same situation as in my youth, I’d rather say I was unemployed.

Ok…Here’s a plan….No President should be able to order US military troops into a conflict that lasts greater than one year without implementing a draft that has no limited exemptions. Furthermore, a budget to pay for the war must be approved by Congress.

It’s a rudimentary plan but when all families share the risk of a loved one and the burden of payment, maybe our elected officials will spend the lives of our troops a bit more judiciously.

My deepest sympathies to the families of the fallen and my higheest honor, thoughts and appreciation to the fallen who gave all. No one sacrifices more than they have throughout all of our conflicts.

I do not think that Mr. Bookman is/has/ever exploited anyone for his own agenda. He is pointing out flawed policy — something so separate from the brave men + women in the military who are given direct orders and follow through with no questions asked. It’s because of them that we are able to live, breathe and write the drivel that we write (I speak for myself of course, not you, Jay) on the Web.

Hopefully in the future, U.S.-led and/or NATO-led coalitions will look to higher tech alternatives rather than commit so many ground forces. Indeed, that approach opens up another can of worms, but one day, perhaps, peace and diplomacy will be first options before heading into armed conflicts.

The reason is we have a Democrat in the White House now. When it was Bush’s war, the press had no problem keeping us informed on the front page. Now that Obama is in charge, it is not an issue to the media, after all, it is Bush’s war and he’s gone so they don’t want to make it seem like they’re anti Obama.

Did this young man have a choice? Did he volunteer 14 times or
was he following orders?

Good morning! I would venture to guess that he did not volunteer for all of them. The Army sends units, not individual soldiers, usually.

Though through my own experience, I can see how one would volunteer at least for a couple of them. If he did volunteer for all, his devotion to duty was awe inspiring.

The US invasion of Iraq was a crime & the invasion of Afghanistan has also been too destructive. The military industrial complex has profited while hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the fall-out for nothing of value. Tax funds have been wasted in these wars & the ensuing torture consisted of war crimes. Of course the wars have stretched too long.

No recent war has been shared by the nation at large. We do not trust our politicians right or left. It is a part of this occupy Wall Street mentality. Here is a man that has served 14 combat tours. Kind of like the tax thing, he does 14 while you would be hard press to find 14 in the entire 1%. You cannot continue to have first class seats in this country. If anyone deserved a first class seat it was this soldier. But a lot of the reason he probably served 14 combats is he couldn’t fit into the American society.

I’m no military guy, but I don’t think they force anyone to go on 14 deployments. That guy made a choice, a bunch of choices, and who are we to say he was wrong to do so? Who are we to say it was a mistake? It was his choice, and I think it’s a shame that you are using something he must have been proud of to score political points. And it’s a shame that you have so little respect for his choices that you want to denigrate the purpose of those choices after his death.

But then you have no shame!

Bring ALL of our troops home from everywhere, and before all you losers start with the “We can’t isolate ourselves from the world, we are a world market”. Seems like the rest of the world has trade without troops, I wonder why? How about we take the 38,000 troops at the North\South Korea border and put them on our southern border, why do we only have 1600 troops there? All we have to do is tell people that we do “business” with when your goods get to our port we can pay you; I bet they would take care of their own interest instead of us doing it for them…

One of the real problems in fighting wars like Iraq is the US Military loses that mysteriousness that filled the world with fear. We were counting on it when we entered Iraq, we show up they are scared to death and the war is over. What I do not understand while we are pouring 700 billion dollars into this thing, not to mention lives, and we can’t train a homeland army in nine years to protect themselves, yet a rag tag homegrown army with far less resources has held us at bay. Where is the value in the money spent? Where is the superior management skills? The same thing can be said about our banking and business skills. What has happen to America on our watch? New Orleans is another example. The money wasted by the US government is just nasty. This after a propaganda machine about homeland defense that cost billions was sounded from every hilltop. Where was the value?

The New York Times runs an interesting feature this morning on how the US is infiltrating the drug cartels in Mexico. I find it fascinating that the Democratic Party that is considered soft on crime and the drug war is making inroads into an area that was a dismal failure under the previous administration. There is so much good work going on now in this country and no trumpet blowing about it. If these cartels were allowed to grow any larger the terrorist would use them for acts in this country. Tell me why we felt safe under the Bush administration? An administration that was always reacting to an event instead of stopping it. An administration that spent billions on horror shows of what could happen and then was never prepared for what did happen. The only attack on this country by terrorist was under the Bush administration, yet they brag that it was the only one. It was by large part blind luck that we didn’t have more under Bush, I think the enemy overestimated us and believe the same hot air the American public was buying.

The other likely reason why we still have troops in Afghanistan is to make sure that the Russian mob has a steady supply of heroin. Heroin addiction in Russia is now a bigger problem than alcoholism.
The only solution to our “winning” a war in Afghanistan is our total troop withdrawal and have the US forces replace by 250,000 UN sanctioned PeaceKeepers from its next-door neighbor China who can seal the Afghan border, disarm and destroy the Afghan insurgents, destroy the heroin crop, and develop the rare earth minerals into a major source of Afghanistan income.

GT

Heroin is a growing problem in the states too. Where this stuff shows up there is definite terrorist influence. A drug dealer in this country is pretty well committing suicide. Once he or she is caught they will serve the rest of their lives in prison. This is great recruiting grounds for terrorist. Legalize drugs and this problem goes away.

What is sad is that the hippies, socialists, communists in our country have succeeded with the wusses in our political weenie class to prevent the military from doing the jobs they are trained to do! In the case of Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the military is not allowed to prosecute a war! All would have been over in 6 months or less if the military was allowed to fight a war and not a political beauty pageant! Patton was right at the end of WWII! We should have destroyed the Russian commies! But no, political desires over ruled common sense! Same in Korea! MacArthur was right that we should have invaded China and killed the commies there! But no! Once again politics over ruled common sense! Same in Viet Nam! This time Westmoreland was right and it could have been over in 6 months! Once again politics over ruled common sense! Ever since, politics has over ruled common sense! We should have stormed Iraq in the early 90’s! We did not, probably causing the rise of Bin Ladin and others! When we again went to Iraq, it should have been full force destroying any and all, and, it would have been over in 6 months! Same in Afghanistan! But no, our government lies about protecting civilians in Libya, while actually facilitating the rise of islamic radicals that will cause us and the world loads of problems with the oil wealth and arms in Libya! IF THE MORONS IN POLITICS AND THE SOCIALIST SCUM IN THE GENERAL POPULATION WILL NOT ALLOW THE MILITARY TO DO THE JOB IT IS TRAINED TO DO, AND, IS EXTREMELY EFFICIENT IN DOING, BREAKING THINGS AND KILLING PEOPLE, THEY SHOULD NEVER BE SENT AGAIN INTO A POLITICAL POLICE KEEPER ROLE FALSELY BRANDED AS A WAR!!! IF WE GO TO WAR, WE SHOULD NOT GIVE A RAT’S REAR END WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS OF US, ONLY THAT WE DO THE DEED AND GET IT OVER ASAP! In some cases, some so called innocent civilians will be collateral damage, so what, that is the consequence of war!!!!!
