Tonight, travelin’ music that is very well-traveled indeed

I posted a more traditional, sedate version of this much-traveled song earlier, in the post about the coming end of U.S. military involvement in Iraq. It began its life as “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye,” an early 19th-century Irish folksong that bewails the fate of Irishmen lured into fighting on Britain’s behalf overseas.

From there it became a favorite song of the U.S. Civil War, insinuating itself into the American military tradition as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.” As kids, we used to sing our own playground parody of the song, in that case about ants that go “marching down, to the ground, to get out of the rain….”

And here, with their own much-different version, the great English band the Clash, from 1979:

He’s never proven his problems with me and when I’ve challenged he either declines to answer the challenge or re-arranges his original accusations essentially taking the discourse out of its original context. josef,

Clinton left a pretty good political record but Newt didn’t? Newt led the House which forced Clinton into the balanced budget deal.People forget that a large part of this balanced budget deal was because the Newt led Congress pushed Clinton into it. The reality is that they worked together to get things done. And as far as being scumbags yes they are serial adulterers and both left office under a cloud- Clinton with the lying under oath and Gingrich with the ethics probe over something about a history course that he taught at a small college. Not that we need to get into a misstress count but Newt was a one or 2 time adulterer while Clinton supposedly had affairs with 7 or more women that we know of. Yet mysteriously Newt is the one that is labeled the adulterer. I just think that Clinton gets a little more fair shake than Newt does. But you know in the media some folks are more equal than other folks.

11/11/11 looks like a good day for Armaggedon at first glance but when you expand the date to 11/11/2011 it just doesn’t balance out as well. I think we’re going to have to wait for something like 10/20/3040 or something like that. Too bad 10/20/2010 has already passed because that one would have worked too. Mornin’.

Good AJC piece on the place religious faith is playing in the OWS movement.

http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/religion-claims-its-place-1208614.html

Religion might not fit into the movement seamlessly, but activist Dan Sieradski, who’s helped organize Jewish services and events at Occupy Wall Street, said it must fit somewhere.

“We’re a country full of religious people,” he said. “Faith communities do need to be present and need to be welcomed in order for this to be an all-encompassing movement that embraces all sectors of society.”

Religious imagery and events have been common since the protests began. In New York, clergy carried an Old Testament-style golden calf in the shape of the Wall Street bull to decry the false idol of greed. Sieradski organized a Yom Kippur service. About 70 Muslims kneeled to pray toward Mecca at a prayer service Friday.

[...]

Clergy who support the protests say they are a natural fit with many faiths, because they share traditional concerns about economic injustice. They also point to history, including the civil rights movement and abolition.

Meet Mitt Romney’s Radical, Right-wing, Sharia-phobe Foreign Policy Advisor

the [Walid] Phares selection may be a dog-whistle to a particular group of conservatives that Romney has, until now, hardly attempted to court: anti-Sharia zealots, who happen to enjoy a strong base of support in Iowa. While the anti-Sharia crowd cares little for impeccable credentials or decades-old foreign conflicts, it cares a great deal about the threat of Sharia law. By tapping Phares, Romney could get in the good graces of this group and inoculate himself against the possibility of being labeled “soft on Sharia.”

Because the GOP base really is *that* stupid.

a wee taste…

The “European races” i.e., white people – “are too self-absorbed to breed,” but the Muslims are multiplying quickly. The inevitable result will be ” large-scale evacuation operations circa 2015″ as Europe is ceded to al Qaeda and “Greater France remorselessly evolve[s] into Greater Bosnia.”

He offers a light smearing of dubious demographic figures – he needs to turn 20 million European Muslims into more than 150 million in nine years, which is a lot of humping.

[...]

Over breakfast, I forgot myself and said I was considering setting out to find a local street kid who would show me round the barrios — the real Mexico. They gaped. “Do you want to die?” one asked.

The Reviewers confine their Mexican jaunt to covered markets and walled-off private fortresses like the private Nikki Beach. Here, as ever, they want Mexico to be a dispenser of cheap consumer goods and lush sands – not a place populated by (uck) Mexicans.
