Tonight, travelin’ music that is very well-traveled indeed
I posted a more traditional, sedate version of this much-traveled song earlier, in the post about the coming end of U.S. military involvement in Iraq. It began its life as “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye,” an early 19th-century Irish folksong that bewails the fate of Irishmen lured into fighting on Britain’s behalf overseas.
From there it became a favorite song of the U.S. Civil War, insinuating itself into the American military tradition as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.” As kids, we used to sing our own playground parody of the song, in that case about ants that go “marching down, to the ground, to get out of the rain….”
And here, with their own much-different version, the great English band the Clash, from 1979:

If govt stays out of things and just lets the private sector do what it does rather than picking winners and losers, saddling business with mandates such as obamacare and a heavy handed regulatory environment, and quit engaging in crony capitalism than we would all be better off. Keep in mind that through the majority of this nation’s history we had a vastly smaller federal govt, no permanent income tax until 1913, and the economy grew to make this new startup country a world power in a little over 100 years. People seemed to do fine before the federal govt became so involved in the economy and everyday life. Seems to many of you got hooked on the nanny state.

Interesting thing about Libya. Lots of different groups including many terrorist groups that made their way over there. Pretty much anarchy right now. And lots of shoulder fired surface to air missiles- thousands of them. Kinda scary knowing that terrorists have a good chance to get their hands on missiles that can bring down civilian airliners. Kinda scary also that the new provisional govt has already announced that sharia law will be the law of the nation instead of Libya being a secular state.
