Tonight, travelin’ music that is very well-traveled indeed

I posted a more traditional, sedate version of this much-traveled song earlier, in the post about the coming end of U.S. military involvement in Iraq. It began its life as “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye,” an early 19th-century Irish folksong that bewails the fate of Irishmen lured into fighting on Britain’s behalf overseas.

From there it became a favorite song of the U.S. Civil War, insinuating itself into the American military tradition as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.” As kids, we used to sing our own playground parody of the song, in that case about ants that go “marching down, to the ground, to get out of the rain….”

And here, with their own much-different version, the great English band the Clash, from 1979:

Headline: “The not-so-celebrity president”

“When President Barack Obama raised a glass to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at a state dinner last week, he did so in the opulently decorated East Room, packed with tables of business leaders, lawmakers and foreign dignitaries. But one of the president’s key constituencies was noticeably absent: Hollywood.

Gone were the Beyonce’s and Streisand’s of the world who have created buzz at other Obama state dinners. The closest thing to a celebrity was Billie Jean King, the onetime tennis champ, and John Cho, the not quite A-list actor from the movie “Harold and Kumar.”

In the latest Obama administration foreign policy failure Hamid Karzai announces that he would side with Pakistan in a conflict with the U.S. A great job of controlling that corrupt little weasel. Last week Obama announces that all troops will vacate Iraq by E.O.Y. as a result of his failure to negotiate with Iraq’s nuri al- Malaki a continued force presence in Iraq that our military commanders have recommended. Prior to that he orders our military to assist the Libyan rebels in finally killing Qaddafi but allows another murderous dictator Bashar al-Assad to continue the slaughter of his own people out of his fear of Iran. Outstanding job Mr. president.

Apparently somebody is so deluded that they don’t think that working class Republicans have also paid a horrific price for being in the middle class over the past thirty plus years.

No sirree, no Republicans have lost their jobs – and entire industries for that matter – and are desperately trying to find new work. It’s all Democrats and other non-Republicans..

And none of them have been participants in our record number of personal bankruptcies, catastrophic medical expenses and loss of their homes through foreclosures. It’s all Democrats and other non-Republicans.

None of them have seen their wages effectively flat-lined since Reagan. It’s all Democrats and and other non-Republicans.

Yep, everything is hunky dory in GOPland. Which explains the almost complete lack of outrage at what has been done to them, their families, their neighborhoods and their communities. (Notwithstanding the Tea Party’s correct efforts to reign in out of control government spending. What they wont talk about is the matching out of control lack of income – heavily due to massive corporate welfare and tax avoidance. To the point where Big Business brazenly no longer pays anywhere near their fair share to Uncle Sam. Though they used to.)

What it doesn’t explain, however, is how the so many of the more reactionary in the right wing use endless ad hominem attacks to vilify these growing protests. From sea to shining sea. Hundreds of thousands of angry American people, from all walks of life, who are beyond fed up with this contrived, counter-productive income disparity and burgeoning plutocracy.

And at long last we the silent are finally speaking truth to power – in a big way – to make our just grievances known.

Middle class Americans need a long overdue hand up, not a hand out.

Open your clenched fists and join them.
