President Obama:
“As promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of year. After nearly 9 years, America’s war in Iraq will be over. Over the next two months, our troops in Iraq– tens of thousands of them — will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home. The last Americans soldiers will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high. proud of their success and knowing that the American people stand united in our support for our troops. That is how America’s military efforts in Iraq will end. “
UPDATE AT 3:35:
Here’s the response of Mitt Romney, the GOP frontrunner:
“President Obama’s astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women. The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government. The American people deserve to hear the recommendations that were made by our military commanders in Iraq.”
Romney aside, I think the news deserves an early kickoff of Friday Traveling Music (a separate version will be posted later:

Moonbats glow we are pullin out without truly knowing if doing so is best. Without the intimate/secret details, none of us know for sure. We know the Bush administration screwed up having a permanent military base. We know Obama wants out for almost totally political reasons. We pull out, the Sunis and Shias continue their fight for control of the country and there will be payback to Iran for all of the weapons and ordinance that they have provided. Yes and no. It’s what’s called a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement). In it, the US and the other nation spell out the legal status of soldiers in the host country and how legal and criminal disputes involving those soldiers will be handled.
IIRC, there are SOFAs in place in most of the nations where we have permanent bases (UK, Germany, Japan, Spain, South Korea).
I don’t know a lot of details on what’s in a SOFA or how it is negotiated, but I know that they exist and that they’re used for the purposes I mentioned.

The American people do stand united in support of our troops. A lot of us, however, think this war was a Vietnam type mistake and, in the years to come, will conclude all of our soldiers who died there died for nothiing. To make matters worse, many of us think the same conclusion will be made about all of the American lives lost in Afghanistan. And, to make matters even more worse, the suspicion grows that The Military-Industrial Complex is actually in the saddle here and will ride our Military into still more useless wars strictly for profit. And, to maximize the pain, it appears that neither Obama or any of the Republican candidates will say one word about this.

Any of these countries is a tinderbox waiting to go up in flames. There is too much oil wealth present for them to stabilize peacefully. Wealth means power and power has been the most important thing to them for some time. Yes, Bush got us into this mess. Perhaps it would have been better if Saddam was still the oppressor….. hell, I don’t have a crystal ball. Hope against hope,….. if Egypt develops into a Muslim Republic and Libya follows suit, do you think that any of that would have happened if not for Iraq? I’m guessing it will get very interesting once we leave:
– “I applied to the call of Sadr to participate against American occupiers,” said Salah Emarah, 35, who traveled from his home in Basra to march in the parade. “This is a peaceful demonstration against American occupiers. Sadr asked us to remain peaceful. At the end of the year, according to Iraq, the occupiers will leave. If they don’t, we will wait for orders.”
– “All the people in Sadr City are waiting for orders from Muqtada Sadr,” said Muhammad Fuad, a 28-year-old carpenter watching the parade. “And we have people all over Iraq — northern, southern.”
– “I came here on the orders of Moqtada al-Sadr to help kick out the occupiers from our country,” said Alaa Hussein, 21, a student taking part. “If the government keeps American troops here we will consider them an illegitimate government.”
– “We will not accept even one American soldier staying,” said Adnan al-Mussawi, one of the demonstrators. “Occupation has not benefited us at all, it is our religious duty to kick out every American soldier.”
The “end” is probably not yet here………………..

Please, Granny, get a grip. Once they’re done doin’ the dyin’ they become part of the ne’er-do-wells you hear conservatives piss and moan so much about, what with needing medical and psychological care and all which they can’t possibly afford on a military salary. I, however, hope to hire a bunch of these vets as they fit well into this industry, are accustomed to physical stress and are generally less fearful than most young Americans. They also possess a sense of responsibility as well as an understanding of the difference between right and wrong and the grey area in between. Both are valuable commodities which are becoming rare.

Looks like Steve Jobs wasn’t too happy with the president…
“You’re headed for a one-term presidency,” he told Obama at the start of their meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly. As an example, Jobs described the ease with which companies can build factories in China compared to the United States, where “regulations and unnecessary costs” make it difficult for them.
Jobs also criticized America’s education system, saying it was “crippled by union work rules,” noted Isaacson. “Until the teachers’ unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform.” Jobs proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

If the figure of 5,500 security contractors is accurate, then yeah, that’s actually a pretty *beefy* heavy combat brigade. It’s actually about twice the size of the light brigades that were part of the 25th Infantry Division when I was in it back in the late 80s.

“The Associated Press reported on Saturday that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by December 31, except for 160 active-duty troops attached to the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The Obama Administration denied this report, maintaining that negotiations were continuing and no final decision had been made.
The Obama Administration had been negotiating to extend the U.S. military presence, now down to about 40,000 troops, past the December 31 deadline for withdrawal set by the 2008 Status of Forces Agreement. But Iraq’s government reportedly refused to continue giving immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts to any U.S. troops that remain beyond December 31.”

I’m in the cell tower industry and presently about half of my 60 employees are vets, and they’re the most productive AND the most appreciative people I’ve got. I have not as yet spoken to any transition counselors but will certainly do so. Word of mouth also seems to work well within the military community as that is how most guys have found us. (Try putting an ad in the paper any more and you’ll find that alot of people show up without fully reading said ad and discovering what it is we actually do – when they find out 50% run for the hills and the other 50% swear that thasy aren’t and will never be afraid of heights. Out of that 50% we quickly help most of those people find out that they actually DO fear heights… badly. You’re left with a very few remaining, and you have to filter them for other deal-breakers such as rampant drug addiction, warrants etc.) Many of these vets have plenty communications experience too, and they aren’t afraid to go where the work is. (Think about it – the majority of towers are not in the nicer neighborhoods and crews are robbed at sites often… but not my crews

Excellent! I suggest you contact the transition counselors at Fort Gordon, outside Augusta, as the US Army Signal School is there. You might find a passel of qualified troopers at that post.
Also consider Fort Benning, outside Columbus (Infantry school) and Fort Stewart, near Hinesville. Stewart used to host the 24th Infantry Division when I was in, but the 24th has been inactivated and the 3d Div is there now.

Yes, PDawg, that’s accurate. Obama and the Iraqis were trying to find a way to keep a few thousand troops in Iraq as trainers, but the issue of immunity could not be resolved. We wouldn’t keep them there without it, and the Iraqi Parliament couldn’t bring itself to grant that immunity. After the invasion and occupation, they’re not too cool with ceding any sovereign rights to the Americans.
Obama alluded to all this in his statement, saying that Americans keep their commitments but that the Iraqis said they wanted to assume all responsibility.

The worst government that mountains of dirty money can buy…
Lobbying Industry Struggles in Today’s Economy
The fact that the House under Republican control is more receptive to the concerns of business also has helped depress lobbying work, as businesses don’t feel a need for lobbyists to defend their interests in the House, says Rob Smith, co-chairman of Venable’s legislative practice group. His firm suffered a 13 percent drop in revenue in the first three quarters of the year.
“House Republicans are listening to industry and are helping to push their priorities,” Smith told The Hill. “Part of the Republican jobs plan is to roll back or block some environmental measures that hurt the private sector, so industry may not feel they need much outside help right now.”

I don’t appreciate fair-weather patriots who slag on veterans just because those veterans happen to have different political views and opinions. I’ve been berated to my *face* and told that I was “not a veteran any more” because I had a Kerry bumper sticker on my car.
Bitter and angry? No. That’d be the lackwit who told me that my veteran status was (apparently) determined by my political status. And when I see that sort of foolishness online, I call it out. Too bad you don’t come down on the side of American veterans; there are a lot of us out there and we’re mostly good people, regardless of whom we vote for.

@ Joe, I find it very interesting how you come down on others for assuming things about you, but you are doing the exact same thing. All I originally said was that ty did not owe you anything, which he doesn’t.
I called you out for being uneducated because that is exactly how you were acting. You know nothing about me, nor my views on veterans. It is a shame that anyone would tell you that you no longer qualified as a veteran for any reason, I do not agree with that on any level. But you my friend have been and are being just as petty as many of the other people here.
I enjoy reading what is written on many articles published, but I do not always comment. That is my choice and as you said, not something I should come under fire for just because someone (you) doesn’t agree.
I appreciate what you did for our country, just as I appreciate what my grandfather, grandmother, father, father-in-law and MYSELF did for this county.

I have a friend who has been in Iraq, with one of the big contractors, for several years.
She is very Republican.
When I’ve asked her about the situation there, regarding the infrastructure, social stability, etc, she pretty much rolls her eyes and tells me that it is still a joke.
The chickenhawks have wasted hundreds of billions of dollars accomplishing damn near nothing there except padding the P & L statements of those contractors.
And they don’t even regret doing so…

wow — “Joe, I find it very interesting how you come down on others for assuming things about you, but you are doing the exact same thing.”
No, I’m not. Ty obliquely insinuated that liberal posters here who claim to be veterans are not actually veterans. I asked him several times to clarify himself and point-blank told him what he seemed to be saying. He declined every request to clarify himself.
I made NO assumptions. I REPEATEDLY asked for clarification. Not receiving any, I’m content with my personal impressions of Ty.
“All I originally said was that ty did not owe you anything, which he doesn’t. ”
I agree. He doesn’t owe me anything. And I’m not going to treat him with any sort of respect, forebearance or politeness going forward. Perhaps you also recognize that *I* don’t owe *him* any of *that.*
“I called you out for being uneducated because that is exactly how you were acting.”
Go jump in a lake. You wrongly berate me for assuming when you’re doing *exactly* that. (laughing)
“You know nothing about me, nor my views on veterans.”
I didn’t ASK you your views on veterans, I didn’t COMMENT on your views on veterans and I don’t CARE what your views are on veterans. I was speaking with Ty before you butted in.
“It is a shame that anyone would tell you that you no longer qualified as a veteran for any reason, I do not agree with that on any level.”

You’re coming under fire for not knowing WTF you’re talking about. Ty obliquely insulted liberal veterans on here and refused to clarify himself. I don’t owe him any understanding for that, and you’ve gotten a lot more explanation than YOU deserve.

The point is, this yee haw was saying crudely much the same thing you hear constantly from both left and right…
Why is Soros such a devil for the righties?
I guess it’s just my MOT atennae and the old tradition of “code word for…”
And I realize that for many “it doesn’t fly” is an easy way to avoid the tendency anytime there is a major monetary/financial/economic crisis, anti Semitism raises its ugly head with depressing consistency…
