Obama: By end of year, ‘America’s war in Iraq will be over’

President Obama:

“As promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of year.  After nearly 9 years, America’s war in Iraq will be over. Over the next two months, our troops in Iraq– tens of thousands of them — will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home. The last Americans soldiers will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high. proud of their success and knowing that the American people stand united in our support for our troops. That is how America’s military efforts in Iraq will end. “

UPDATE AT 3:35:

Here’s the response of Mitt Romney, the GOP frontrunner:

“President Obama’s astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women. The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government. The American people deserve to hear the recommendations that were made by our military commanders in Iraq.”

Romney aside, I think the news deserves an early kickoff of Friday Traveling Music (a separate version will be posted later:

Thank you President Bush for establishing this time line and thank you to the current administration for maintaining it. Well done.

and thank you President Obama for suggesting the plan in April 2007, whilst the GOP was still hollering “cut and run” and Thank you President Bush for finally putting it in writing after President Obama was elected

he had to have some positive legacy I guess….

Spare me the deflections away from the criminal heroes that you voted for and supported every botched step of the way.

Armed Liberal via Wired — “State will be commanding a much larger security presence, the equivalent of a heavy combat brigade.”

If the figure of 5,500 security contractors is accurate, then yeah, that’s actually a pretty *beefy* heavy combat brigade. It’s actually about twice the size of the light brigades that were part of the 25th Infantry Division when I was in it back in the late 80s.

It’s telling to see the difference in opinions with regards to Obama (campaign) speech between Jay and Kyle.

“Btw, the Obama administration has been trying for months to get an extension to leave several thousand troops in Iraq after Dec. 31. Baghdad refused, and now the president comes out and says he’s removing all of ‘em. No mention of that, today, either…”

“The Associated Press reported on Saturday that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by December 31, except for 160 active-duty troops attached to the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The Obama Administration denied this report, maintaining that negotiations were continuing and no final decision had been made.
The Obama Administration had been negotiating to extend the U.S. military presence, now down to about 40,000 troops, past the December 31 deadline for withdrawal set by the 2008 Status of Forces Agreement. But Iraq’s government reportedly refused to continue giving immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts to any U.S. troops that remain beyond December 31.”

I’m in the cell tower industry and presently about half of my 60 employees are vets, and they’re the most productive AND the most appreciative people I’ve got. I have not as yet spoken to any transition counselors but will certainly do so. Word of mouth also seems to work well within the military community as that is how most guys have found us. (Try putting an ad in the paper any more and you’ll find that alot of people show up without fully reading said ad and discovering what it is we actually do – when they find out 50% run for the hills and the other 50% swear that thasy aren’t and will never be afraid of heights. Out of that 50% we quickly help most of those people find out that they actually DO fear heights… badly. You’re left with a very few remaining, and you have to filter them for other deal-breakers such as rampant drug addiction, warrants etc.) Many of these vets have plenty communications experience too, and they aren’t afraid to go where the work is. (Think about it – the majority of towers are not in the nicer neighborhoods and crews are robbed at sites often… but not my crews :) )

Excellent! I suggest you contact the transition counselors at Fort Gordon, outside Augusta, as the US Army Signal School is there. You might find a passel of qualified troopers at that post.

Also consider Fort Benning, outside Columbus (Infantry school) and Fort Stewart, near Hinesville. Stewart used to host the 24th Infantry Division when I was in, but the 24th has been inactivated and the 3d Div is there now.

Good luck in your candidate search, and thank you for hiring veterans! :)

Yes, PDawg, that’s accurate. Obama and the Iraqis were trying to find a way to keep a few thousand troops in Iraq as trainers, but the issue of immunity could not be resolved. We wouldn’t keep them there without it, and the Iraqi Parliament couldn’t bring itself to grant that immunity. After the invasion and occupation, they’re not too cool with ceding any sovereign rights to the Americans.

Obama alluded to all this in his statement, saying that Americans keep their commitments but that the Iraqis said they wanted to assume all responsibility.

The worst government that mountains of dirty money can buy…

Lobbying Industry Struggles in Today’s Economy

The fact that the House under Republican control is more receptive to the concerns of business also has helped depress lobbying work, as businesses don’t feel a need for lobbyists to defend their interests in the House, says Rob Smith, co-chairman of Venable’s legislative practice group. His firm suffered a 13 percent drop in revenue in the first three quarters of the year.

“House Republicans are listening to industry and are helping to push their priorities,” Smith told The Hill. “Part of the Republican jobs plan is to roll back or block some environmental measures that hurt the private sector, so industry may not feel they need much outside help right now.”

How much would you like to bet? The U.S. will be there for all eternity. The Iraqis could not stand the loss of income if the troops left. It is just like occuping Germany, the whole infrastructure depends on the U.S. being there

@ Joe, I find it very interesting how you come down on others for assuming things about you, but you are doing the exact same thing. All I originally said was that ty did not owe you anything, which he doesn’t.

I called you out for being uneducated because that is exactly how you were acting. You know nothing about me, nor my views on veterans. It is a shame that anyone would tell you that you no longer qualified as a veteran for any reason, I do not agree with that on any level. But you my friend have been and are being just as petty as many of the other people here.

I enjoy reading what is written on many articles published, but I do not always comment. That is my choice and as you said, not something I should come under fire for just because someone (you) doesn’t agree.

I appreciate what you did for our country, just as I appreciate what my grandfather, grandmother, father, father-in-law and MYSELF did for this county.

JAY:

Does Congress have the power (over a presidential veto I would assume) to refuse funding to bring the troops home?

Poor Mitt.

Still hoping that pretending to be a simpleton neo-con is gonna endear him to that crowd.

Granny? You want the Republicans to find the returning vets (btw… all obama did was say they are coming home in the next couple of months, no one is actually home yet) jobs?

Isn’t job creation the job of the federal government?

here’s my response to Mitt Romney

I apologize if this offends anyone……but it must be articulated.

I have a friend who has been in Iraq, with one of the big contractors, for several years.

She is very Republican.

When I’ve asked her about the situation there, regarding the infrastructure, social stability, etc, she pretty much rolls her eyes and tells me that it is still a joke.

The chickenhawks have wasted hundreds of billions of dollars accomplishing damn near nothing there except padding the P & L statements of those contractors.

And they don’t even regret doing so…

“The dark scourge of anti-Semitism has reared up at many “Occupy” protests across the country, and the subject could well become a campaign 2012 issue as Republicans have been quick to point out to voters that many Democrats, including the president, are aligning themselves with the protests.”

Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) abruptly canceled his speech on income inequality scheduled for this afternoon at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

SHOCKING!! Cantor’s afraid of his fellow Americans!
