Gallup: Majority of Americans back pot legalization

This is, I think, one of the more dramatic reversals of public opinion of the past 30 years.

f9nyco05-um-ww_mfbuo9q

As Gallup notes, this is the first year in which a majority of Americans polled say they support legalization of marijuana, and the clear trend line suggests that majority is likely to grow. The realities of life offer further reason to think that trend will continue. Support for legalization is lowest among those 65 and older, and highest among those ages 18-29.

dq8bjss84e2ub3uwvjgeaa-1

Not surprisingly, Southern Republican conservatives older than 65 are least likely to support legalization. But even among that subgroup, it looks as though roughly a third or more think marijuana should be legal. That’s roughly the same level of support that existed in the nation as a whole just a decade ago.

I’m at a loss to explain that sudden shift in sentiment, because I have no idea what outside force might be driving it. It is, you might say, a homegrown movement.

“There are either moral absolutes or there are not.”

I vote not,

“If not, then really anything could be acceptable at some point ”

And I don’t buy the slipperty slope thing either. I know what is right and what is wrong, not because the Bible or anything tells me so, it’s because humans have a sense of that based upon mores and norms of a society.

Yes, cannibalism and child molestation are frowned upon in this society, but in others, cannibalism is totally accepted (I don’t know of any society where child molestation is ok), it’s based upon someone’s culture.

And some cultures have sub-cultures where some practices are more accepting. Read a sociology book, it’ll asplain a little more.

Anywho, gotta go get me daughter! Later gators!!

If they are going to ban something, they should ban cigarettes. They are more addictive than heroin, and they kill. They don’t make you feel good and happy, and they don’t add anything positive to your life, only a reminder that one day the doctor will say that you are dying. Pot does have a cancer causing agent in it, but you don’t smoke as much pot as you do cigarettes. No one smokes 20 to 40 joints a day as they do cigarettes. Smoke a joint, eat a little, and take a nap.

“One would be the general erosion of moral standards over the past several decades”

???. This presumes that partaking of MJ is moral issue. Much like the prohibition of alcohol, It only became an issue when it was criminalized.

Okay, you want to talk morals? Here is my #1 reason for legalization:

When you pass laws that turn everyone into criminals, you breed deep disrespect for the government and the law. Bad laws CAUSE moral breakdown… the breakdown being disrespect for the rule of law. A concise set of legitimate laws is necessary for the respect for those who enforce them.

You can quote me on that. It is like the 55mph speed limit. There might have been some tiny percentage of the population that never broke the speed limit, but 99% of drivers broke this law. What kind of respect do you think regular citizens had for officers enforcing this law?

Well, if mj was legal, you could tax it, which would help to raise revenue. Growing modest amounts of pot could be like a small business, which would help stimulate the economy though producing something in relatively high demand and relieve the prison system of its burden. There are very few actual disadvantages to legalizing pot; it is no worse than liquor.

I am sure this has been more eloquently stated, I just don’t want to read through that many comments.

I think you have a point there and, thought I didn’t say it in my initial post, I think it is really hard to make and try to enforce laws that are inconsistent. And, though I think that smoking pot is not beneficial to most people (based on my own personal experience), I nonetheless recognize that it is inconsistent to outlaw this activity when smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, eating 20 Big Macs in one sitting and other harmful things are legal. It is not for me a make or break proposition in considering a candidate for office. I used to smoke cigarettes at one time but am not one of the militant anti-smokers former smokers often become. For me the underlying moral principle is harm to oneself – which not only costs the person but can also cost the society at large (as we have now seen with healthcare and the like).

Too much money is to be made by the DEA and the cops for legalization to ever occur. Furthermore, politicians on both sides know that there is way too much political capital for them to harvest from keeping it illegal to ever consider decriminalization. Even though it would save this country billions. Alcohol is way more destructive than marijuana and yes pot can cause respiratory disease but what does alcohol do? It destroys lives, it destroys health and it causes violence in one
form or the other. There is one thing I know, pot does not cause violence. Unless of course it is kept illegal and the drug dealers continue on with their war.

I don’t know him. A lot of things can count when people are “picking and choosing” – not just race or social standing. That is patently obvious. If I go into certain neighborhoods in Atlanta, my white skin and middle class social status will not likely permit me to “slide by” (as you put it). Everyone on this blog (and indeed in the world) has moral standards, as evidenced by the judgements rendered almost every minute. They can all be wrong, but they cannot all be right. But logical inconsistency is a sure sign something is wrong.

Jay, You wouldn’t know the truth if it was setting in front you. You are paid to promote the lefts agenda plain and simple my deal friend. If you were free to write about the truth, would you???????? Not just what you are instructed to write about from your liberal progressive bosses.

Hey Einstein, who pays Kyle Wingfield?

Come on, LPB….your zeal is getting the better of you. Romney is NOT a secret admirer of Cassidy; he only said in passing that he enjoyed watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Geez..get a grip, man!

“Doggone/Ga, Yes, but we are talking about marijuana. Look how alcohol has done to sociality as a whole and to people’s lifes.”

As someone in Ken Burn’s series about Prohibition said, in effect: you treat those who have a problem, you don’t legislate for everyone because 10% of the people have a problem. It doesn’t work.

uspo,

read my lips. No New Jobs! I mean… real jobs for real Americans… dammit, that’s not what I meant. I’ll chase Osama to the gates of haides, if I knew where that was. Is it 2008 yet.

Aquagirl,
BTW, the Army spent taxpayer dollars teaching me about propaganda and how it’s used to gain political power. You are one screaming textbook case if I ever saw one.

Exactly. Crazy like Fox.

Mitt claims to know the 99%. He will say anything to get their votes. I have scruples. Where did I put them. I can’t go anywhere without them.

You know my jaundiced opinion of Ken Burns…but that Prohibition one was him at his best! Watched it twice…

I’ve learned so much since I’ve been reading this blog. I never knew brains could be both scared and lily white. Those silly doctors who refer to them as grey matter…where did they get edumacated?

Most people don’t realize how much havoc you can wreak with crap information. If you did, you’d be less complacent when you see zombified posters.

Bookman,

You and others like you decry the illegal immigrant problem as just another walk in the park, no problem, we can handle that….. they only contribute to our well being and do the jobs that others will not do. But CA is a prime example of how wrong that premise is. CA spends close to 10.5B/yr on illegals. 7.7B in education (close to 15% of the student body is latino illegals), 1.4 B on health care, 1.1B in subsidies and they are 28B in the hole as of last month. And you and people like Aquagirl, who has her head in the sand, want us to believe that that is not a problem? What kind of world do you live in? Go to About.com. They will make you much smarter.
