Hank Jr. yanked from his MNF gig, for good reason

Hank Williams Jr. ain’t ready for some politics.

I like the man’s music. I thought he provided a perfect hard-driving opening for Monday Night Football, and so did ESPN and ABC. He had the gig for 20 years, until he opened his mouth yesterday and said some things too damned stupid to let him continue.

Rule of thumb, Bocephus: When the crew at Fox News are so appalled at what you’ve said about Barack Obama that their jaws drop and they all but beg you to reconsider, you may have gone too far.

And please, spare me the violin concerto about Junior’s freedom of speech being violated.

Two words:

Dixie.

Chicks.

Their mistake, so to speak, was to tell an audience in 2003 that “just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” which is some 60 million dead people and two or three attempted genocides short of comparing him to Adolph Hitler. And as a consequence, their work was permanently banned from almost every country music station in the country.

I hope this doesn’t become a career boost for Williams, but I can imagine it happening. I can imagine DJs putting his songs on air because of what he said, rather than despite it. I can imagine him becoming a martyred hero in certain eyes, and that reality is more troubling than what some in-over-his-head, not-so-bright, trying-to-live-up-to-a-stereotype entertainer had to say on national TV.

Hank claims he was just making an analogy and the public misunderstood. Maybe, but I suspect that he was high on something and his true hate-filled feelings came out. “Then Williams save a shout out to GOP Presidential Candidate Herman Cain saying he’s the only one who “makes the most sense.”

Which, if you think about it, has some twisted logic to it. A ultra-right wing racist white guy loves a black guy who hates muslims and comes off as self-hating at points. So for Hank Williams to like Herman Cain is just part of the whole, idiotic, stupid, craziness of the GOP today.

Williams did not compare Obama to Hitler, he compared Obama playing golf with a conservative to Hitler hanging out with the Israeli Prime Minister. That’s an illustration of polar opposites, not a comparison of Obama to Hitler.

In today’s world though, everything is offensive to somebody.

Like politicians, you have to play to your constituency and the Dixie Chicks just aren’t certain people’s cup o tea. That said, I’m leaning with your comments, Jay, about Hank’s songs being given much more air time over those particular air waves. But it has nothing to do with racism (I felt compelled to get that one out of the way early on for the benefit of the right wingers of the far right persuasion) mind you. No. It purely boils down to patriotism and showing respect to the president especially during war time because we are fighting terrorists around the world and our president is protecting us. Anyway, I used to not care much for this style of country music that folks like Hank Jr. brought us what with all the whining (it just reminds me too much of Republicans crying in the beer after losing to Obama) and wailing and feeling sorry for oneself until I heard them Dixie Chicks. They aren’t like that. They’re good singers too.

kayaker 71

Granny,

In this world of polarized politics, rhetoric has a way of defining a lot more than decency. We have become much more than a difference of opinion and more like a chasm between the thoughts of opponents. Same thing with the race debate. When my favorite actor states that the Tea Party has become racist, I am not sure what to say. He is entitled to his opinion, as we all are, however I think he is dead wrong. Is he really serious or is he speaking as a black man, finally pushed to the point of frustration?
I’ll make you a deal you can’t refuse. I will stop using disparaging language against our president for one week and see how the liberal bloggers respond. If their tone settles down so that we can all have a dialogue free of “inappropriate” name calling, we’ll make it last awhile. @Richard — that’s how I took his statement as well. He was not comparing Obama to Hilter but rather saying that people on polar opposites of the political spectrum (in his opinion) should not be making nice on the golf course. I recall when someone mentioned to Obama about playing a round of golf with Rush that he made some crude statement like “Rush can play with himself”. Sounds to me like he was not interested in playing golf with his enemy.

As far as yanking him from MNF, of course ESPN has the right but to anyone offended by HW, the Dixie Chicks or whoever — GROW THE HECK UP!!! You cannot live in a country that allows freedom of speech and expect not to ever be offended by the exercise of that speech. Hugh Laurie (the star of my favorite tv show House) made some crude remark about George Bush when he accepted an Emmy or Golden Globe a year or so ago. And there have been hundreds of other actors, singer, athletes, etc., who have primarily said “stupid” statements about Reagan, both Bushes, Gingrigh, Rush, Republicans, Tea Party, etc. So what!!! I know who I am and their rants doesn’t in anyway interfere with my life.

2. HWJ did not call Obama Hitler. He seemed to be saying that the golf foursome was a ridiculous pairing. Like Jay Bookman and Anne Coulter getting married.
3. This is the best you can come up with for an editorial?

Now, HWJ is no more worthy or unworthy of giving political comment than the Chicks and he is a looney tune. Maybe he only mentioned Obama and Biden as the three stooges because he was already counting himself in there.

Shakespearian Irony

In Hitler’s early days, if a person spoke out against him, that person was condemned by Hitler’s followers and the state controlled media. The least that would happen is that he would lose his job, and of course that didn’t matter whether he worked for the government or not.

An American compares the president to Hitler and look at what happened.

That is 1.6 Million jobs LOST or Destroyed every MONTH. He promised the Stimulus would save or create 2 mill jobs a year.

And when H took office, the deficit was a shameful $10.5 TRILLION…. In 30 MONTHS H has run it up to $14.5 TRILLION. MORE in 30 Months than Mr. Bush ran it up in his first 72 MONTHS.

Why? Because the TRUTH is that most Republicans and especially tea partiers can’t stand that a person of color is THEIR Commander in Chief.

USinUK;
“Barack Obama missed 314 (24%) of 1,300 roll call votes since Jan 6, 2005. The graph below shows the percent of roll call votes Barack Obama was absent for during the Member’s time in Congress.”

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400629&tab=votes

That does not add in the “Present” votes, so almost 75% of the time this idiot did not know what to do, what a loser!

I think you could argue that Hank was not calling Obama Hitler; he was reaching for 2 polar opposites or mortal enemies, and went with Hitler v. Jews. I believe he meant this the same as saying “Roadrunner playing golf with Coyote” or “Bugs Bunny playing golf with Elmer Fudd.”

Obozo in his 3 years in the senate missed more votes than any senator in history, at least he is number one at something.. What a great record right USinUK?

How come it is wrong for Bosephus to mention Hitler, but the media didn’t make a big deal out of the many leftists who called Bush Hitler or when Sen. Durbin compared out military to Nazis and Soviets?

How come it is wrong for Bosephus to say the Republicans and Democrats are enemies, but the mainstream media said little or nothing when Obama told Latinos that Republicans were their “enemies” (Obama’s word)?

Answer: Bias and hypocrisy.

Jay, did you ever write an article condemning the actions on the left that I mentioned? Maybe you did and I didn’t see that article. I’ll look for your reply to answer this question.

Well, I’m sure glad to learn redneck is cultural. I’d hate to be hit with a racial slur. I mean, that stuff’s for Those People.

Have a good p.m. everybody.

The Dixie Chicks didn’t get fired though Jay! How many vile things have on air personalities said about Republicans and GWB? Hundreds maybe even thousands of times without fear of repercussions. You and the far left ilk use derogatory terms all the time about people you disagree with. It’s the only way you freaks can argue because on the merits you have no case…. ESPN will lose viewers because of this…..

Joe — “The Dixie Chicks didn’t get fired though Jay!”

The Dixie Chicks didn’t work for ESPN and they didn’t compare the President to Hitler.

No comparison there, Joe.

AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Dang! I’m sorry I was busy this morning, and am just now looking at this clip. This is HIIIIIII-fricking-LARIOUS! ROFL… Poor Gretchen… so flattered at first. Then so horrified. Her Stanford-educated mind can only fake so much stepford for a paycheck. TOOOOO funny!

They should run Hank Jr’s clip unedited in the anti-drug ads! HEY KIDS! Mixing drugs and ignorance has some very ugly consequences. Hahaha!

I’d like you to please put a chart up of every Senator’s record in history so I can verify your claim.

Anyway, whatever makes you feel better about hating the man. And you call other people brainwashed. Yeesh.

Jay, his coming out of the clear blue and saying something guaranteed to get him on every news channel and program does look suspicious, doesn’t it?

I mean, right here at the beginning of Republican primary season, what else is a rebel entertainer going to do to try filling up his personal coffers “while the gettin’ is good”?

Yup, I think you’re right, sir, and it’s called G-I-G-S, and the more the better, especially for fading headliners. Hey, it’s better than having to move to Branson or Vegas, and he can always apologize later!

Several commenters have suggested that “the liberal media,” or whatever, felt that it was “okay” for anybody to compare GW Bush to Hitler. Are you able to provide evidence of this claim? Not that morons made that comparison; that certainly happened, for instance, with the ad submitted in the competition sponsored by moveon.org. But can you show me where a major left-wing site, such as Daily Kos, took a position of “Good for you!” Can you link me to the Keith Olbermann special comment where he approved of such a thing?

*Nobody* thought it an acceptable comparison except the morons who made it. The left-wing was every bit as appalled, in 2004, at those comparisons as the anchors of Fox & Friends are in the clip above. I know that doesn’t fit with the narrative that Rush and Sean preach, but, unless you’d like to prove otherwise, it happens to be true.

I’m so appalled at his comments….NOT!
I don’t see any difference in Hank calling Obama Hitler any different that MoveOn.org repeatedly doing it to Bush.
In this country we have the freedom of speech, but that does not mean you have freedom of consequences….ask the Dixie Chics.
The same thing could happen to HW Jr., but I rather doubt it!

Jeeze, will you people stop using the term “red-neck”. Most of you, and especially deep southerns, don’t even know what it really mean or where the term comes from. Wiki it and then come talk to this former West Virginian.
Back to the point…..read the whole article please. His analogy was brash but originally miscontrued. I do not agree with his view of “polar opposites” not being able to coming together for a common goal. Actually, I think there should be more of these types of meetings. As most of us know, more business and deals are made over drinks or on the golf course.

That song should have been yanked years ago, it sounds so redneck and dated. In a sport which is 75% black why do they have an old cracker redneck bellowing the theme song? His comments were an embarassment, maybe not to southern racists, but to everyone else. Adios! Stupidity can be expensive.
