Hank Jr. yanked from his MNF gig, for good reason

Hank Williams Jr. ain’t ready for some politics.

I like the man’s music. I thought he provided a perfect hard-driving opening for Monday Night Football, and so did ESPN and ABC. He had the gig for 20 years, until he opened his mouth yesterday and said some things too damned stupid to let him continue.

Rule of thumb, Bocephus: When the crew at Fox News are so appalled at what you’ve said about Barack Obama that their jaws drop and they all but beg you to reconsider, you may have gone too far.

And please, spare me the violin concerto about Junior’s freedom of speech being violated.

Two words:

Dixie.

Chicks.

Their mistake, so to speak, was to tell an audience in 2003 that “just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” which is some 60 million dead people and two or three attempted genocides short of comparing him to Adolph Hitler. And as a consequence, their work was permanently banned from almost every country music station in the country.

I hope this doesn’t become a career boost for Williams, but I can imagine it happening. I can imagine DJs putting his songs on air because of what he said, rather than despite it. I can imagine him becoming a martyred hero in certain eyes, and that reality is more troubling than what some in-over-his-head, not-so-bright, trying-to-live-up-to-a-stereotype entertainer had to say on national TV.

I learned there is a difference, an important difference between calling President Bush out on policy and calling him “Chimperer”.

I will never apologize for my strong and justified anti-Bush feelings, but for helping to turn a discussion into a cesspool….that I have to take partial responsibility for.

Until all of us who did it, to Bush or Obama, understand that difference we ain’t getting anywhere.

poison – 9:12 – fwiw, I find it disturbing when ANYone uses that comparison.

when everyone is “hitler”, then no one is.
when everyone is a “nazi”, then no one is.

” it totally diminishes what they both were, what they stood for and what they did to the jews, gypsies, gays, and the mentally/physically handicapped.”

USinUK, I was refering to Joe’s use of the word ” Enemy.” I never said anything about Hitler. I guess I should have made it more clear.

pen, you are the perfect Republican.

For you and your buddies out there on the fringe, it always comes down to how big one’s checkbook is.

That’s pretty much the tie-breaker for you, isn’t it?

Not the kind of person they are or the type of life they live or the amount of good works they’ve done for others.

It explains everything about your twisted ideology – your reverence and protection for the super-rich and your derision for the poor.

In my useless opinion, that is pretty damn sad…

@Richard — that’s how I took his statement as well. He was not comparing Obama to Hilter but rather saying that people on polar opposites of the political spectrum (in his opinion) should not be making nice on the golf course. I recall when someone mentioned to Obama about playing a round of golf with Rush that he made some crude statement like “Rush can play with himself”. Sounds to me like he was not interested in playing golf with his enemy.

As far as yanking him from MNF, of course ESPN has the right but to anyone offended by HW, the Dixie Chicks or whoever — GROW THE HECK UP!!! You cannot live in a country that allows freedom of speech and expect not to ever be offended by the exercise of that speech. Hugh Laurie (the star of my favorite tv show House) made some crude remark about George Bush when he accepted an Emmy or Golden Globe a year or so ago. And there have been hundreds of other actors, singer, athletes, etc., who have primarily said “stupid” statements about Reagan, both Bushes, Gingrigh, Rush, Republicans, Tea Party, etc. So what!!! I know who I am and their rants doesn’t in anyway interfere with my life.

Looks like a lot of fainting couches are needed in here.

While Jr. did use a very bad comparison, he was not calling Obama a Jew killing maniac. He was merely pointing out that the golf game between the Obama/Boner was like enemies playing together.

Glad the Monday night theme is gone – never cared for it.

Funny how the Dixie chicks did make country music fans out of a lot of liberals (if you want to call them country).

Bush/Cheney were portrayed as Nazis all the time and no one on the left ever condemned it. I really don’t care what a performer’s politcal tilt is as long as they are good musicians.

Kinda sad how far the apple fell from the tree. His father, who didn’t even reach 30, had already accomplished more for American music than his son ever could. He was taught how to play guitar by a black man, and while drugs and booze did him in, it seems he had a lot more humility than Jr.

Byte Me and poison, having known programming executives from both ABC/ESPN and NBC, I can assure you that MNF (and NBC’s Sunday night) is not intended to be “family friendly”. This is why the programs air after kiddie bedtime. again, we’re talking about the NFL (supported by boozehounds, gamblers and men who like to leer at scantily clad “cheerleaders”). family friendly? who’s family? and poison, I could give a sh*t about what liberals say when compared to what conservatives say. I agree with Richard, it was a weak and ill-advised metaphor, and nothing more. but this idea that we are at war with each other (Obama and liberals are the enemy) is childish and conveys a profound lack of intellectual effort. but as I said, we’re talking about Hank Williams, Jr. and MNF. non-issue in my book. 1. You imply it was wrong to ban the Dixie Chicks. So now it is “OK” to do it to HWJ because in your book two wrongs make a right, so long as the left was the first side wronged?
2. HWJ did not call Obama Hitler. He seemed to be saying that the golf foursome was a ridiculous pairing. Like Jay Bookman and Anne Coulter getting married.
3. This is the best you can come up with for an editorial?

Now, HWJ is no more worthy or unworthy of giving political comment than the Chicks and he is a looney tune. Maybe he only mentioned Obama and Biden as the three stooges because he was already counting himself in there.

The again, Obama and Biden are stupid enough to equal three stooges all by themselves.

Recon — “The hypocrisy on the left has no limitation. The slime that has come from many mouths on the left including what I’ve read on here about previous Republican presidents, candidates and conservatives in general has often exceeded anything Hank Williams Jr. had to say.”

I don’t call people silly names, and I’m not personally responsible for what others say.

I didn’t like President Bush, but I refer to him as “President Bush” or the like. The most colloquial name I’ve ever used for him is “Bush the Younger,” usually when I’m referring to him and his father in the same post.

If you’re going to use the bad behavior of others as an excuse for bad behavior of your own, then don’t be surprised when the bad behavior of others continues as THEY use YOUR bad behavior as justification for continuing their own jerkitude.

An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind. If you want others to behave better, then set an effing example instead of peeing and moaning about it.

If you were really honest, you would research every liberal vs. every conservative entertainer that ever said something ugly like that involving a president ………….. make one of your charts …………… and report back to us.

But ………………………….

Good little liberal

Mrs. G.,

I say in, but he won’t last long. As we’ve seen, the GOP has gone so far to the right they simply won’t allow anything left of wacko extreme.

GLL @ 9:57

Exactly …………… that’s why all things equal it’s easier for a liberal to win an election.

The greater percentage of the media is in their back pocket.

GLL,

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Hollywood stars are given movies based on their ability to bring in the crowds — look at Tom Cruise. He hasn’t had a decent role since he went off the whack end and bashed Brooke Shields. And deservedly so.

Shakespearian Irony

In Hitler’s early days, if a person spoke out against him, that person was condemned by Hitler’s followers and the state controlled media. The least that would happen is that he would lose his job, and of course that didn’t matter whether he worked for the government or not.

An American compares the president to Hitler and look at what happened.

Jay, do you still honestly believe that my comment downstairs was out of line?

Should a president who had formerly spoken to a KKK rally and then marched with them be held to account ?

And if truth and facts really mattered so much to you, then you’d get up off your duff and do it yourself.

This ain’t Conservapedia, pal.

In other words GLL, YOU have the ability to fire a Hollywood star by not attending their movies or watching them on TV.

See my 9:57. I’m proud of those standards.

Williams should have known better. If you are a conservative, you damn well better keep your feelings to yourself.

And again, the irony of the whole affair. . .

“Georgia’s economy is projected to shrink by $391 million and lose 3,260 jobs as a result of farm labor shortages this year, according to a report released Tuesday by the state’s agricultural industry.”

Everyone who said we need to punish employers who hire illegals should be happy campers right now then. Right, Jay?

Dear Paul @ 9:27, “What was it Jay said a while back about the Republican Party moving so far to the right that they view the extreme as normal and anything moderate as socialism?” Maybe the Democrat Party has moved so far to the left that they view the extreme as normal and anything socialist as moderate? I think most Republicans now regard the JFK tax cuts as “mainstream.”

“It isn’t hypocrisy. it’s just that we have learned to expect so much less from liberals.”

Not true……go back and research all the gigs Kayne West lost due to his “Bush doesn’t care black people”

Works both was GLL! As I said before, freedom of speech has consequences, and if you bold enough to make them, then you bold enough to take what comes after.
