Under the headline “Chris Christie seriously considering run for president in 2012,” the Star Ledger in New Jersey reports:
BATON ROUGE — Gov. Chris Christie is seriously rethinking his months of denials and may launch a campaign for the White House after all, a source close to the governor said tonight.
In the last week, Christie has been swayed away from his earlier refusals to run by an aggressive draft effort from a cadre of Republicans and donors unhappy with the GOP field, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity….
At a campaign rally here today for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Christie continued to criticize Obama’s leadership, but ignored several questions from reporters about whether he would seek the White House.
“If you’re looking for leadership in America you’re not going to find it in the Oval Office,” Christie said today in Baton Rouge.
The rally and a fundraiser afterward capped off a cross-country tour by the governor, where his Reagan Library speech Tuesday served to only stoke speculation that he might reverse course and seek the Republican nomination for president…
In addition, the governor’s wife, Mary Pat, no longer objects to a presidential run, according to an adviser to the governor.
The governor has famously said “my wife would kill me” as a reason not to run. However, a few months ago former first lady Barbara Bush called Mary Pat to assuage her concerns about life in the White House, the adviser said.
If so, welcome to the Big Top, governor. Given factors such as geography (another Northeast governor) and where he falls on the political spectrum, the person with the most to lose from Christie’s entry would be Mitt Romney. And it would certainly add some intrigue to the next Republican debate.

How will he respond to the crazies (his words) in his own party, ( “It’s just crazy, and I’m tired of dealing with the crazies.”)? Will the evangeicals be happy with him appointing a Muslim to the court? Remember hat many of the religous CONservatives believe now is the end times and Christie’s not going to go along with some of their silly ideas. Will Christie have to go along with the kooks on the far right? Will he be able to get enough indie’s to support him in a general election? And what does this say about the current crop of canidates? If they are so bad that big donars are begging the Gov to get into the race, what will they do if/when Christie flames out? Is Christie really the savior of the party?
Odd, I keep hearing the CONservatives tell us how this is the election they are happy about. That their is no way they can lose to Obama (you know, that guy from Kenya), that 2010 was just the begining of the end for the socialists in the WH. If it is going to be a cake walk, why are they so worried?

Mick – I agree, he wouldn’t last long. He may be able to deliver the KO to Rick Perry, but that would be about it. Only one candidate has resurged after having been a previous “flavor of the month”, and that’s Herman Cain. The reason – he is the only candidate who seems to have sat down and come up with concise plans for the issues (9-9-9, the Chilean model for SS). Mitt Romney has his plan, what some 59 points? It may be good, but good grief who wants to hear that on the campaign trail? It does not resonate, the complexities can come later. For now, get out and market the basics, and that is where Herman is succeeding, if for no other reason than because the others aren’t trying.

Well Granny G., if I am not mistaken Michelle had ordered her husband to stop smoking as a condition for him running for president; which he did not. And we know this because of the medical report released by the WH over a year ago in which the doctor ordered him to continue working on his smoking cessation efforts and to cut back on the alcohol.
Sorry I don’t believe for one minute that he has stopped smoking or drinking; and if you believe the tabloids Mrs. O likes to drink a wee bit too much herself.
But I agree with Strawman there is no reason that Christie cannot lose a significant amount of weight between now and November of next year. And if he plans on running he should also state that as well; acknowledge that he has allowed his weight to get out of hand, and that Americans have every right to be comcerned about the health of it’s president and he will begin immediately to get his weight problem under control.

Chris Christy is a bonafide-dyed in the wool contender. Let us not delay, put him im in as a candidate. He is along the lines of FDR, honest, forthright, plain spoken and born for the job as Chief Exectutive of the United States, How long has it been since there was a plain spoken person in the office. The last one was Harry Truman and before it was Abraham Lincoln. Now is the time. Although Governor Chrisite is a bit ponderous and lacks the AGILITY for some of those arduous climbs up to the Cabin of Airforce !, where there is a will there is a way.

Well, that kind of demonstrated personal change would almost certainly win him the presidency – because he will have proven not just as a governor but as a person that he is a man of action. In that regard, his obesity could represent the single biggest threat to Obama.

Christie’s Balanced Budget: Same Script, Different Year
By Mark J. Magyar, January 4 in Budget
Last June, Governor Chris Christie got the budget he wanted. Declaring that the state cannot spend money it doesn’t have, Christie pushed through a $28.374 billion budget — the smallest in seven years. Christie also vetoed a Democratic bill to temporarily restore raised income tax rates for those making over $500,000. Instead, he cut state aid to school districts and municipalities, slashed property tax rebates and forced transit fare hikes and tuition increases.
For months, Christie and state Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff have made it clear that they intend to follow the same script with the upcoming FY12 budget. Dismissing better-than-expected income tax collections through November as an aberration, they have repeatedly warned school and municipal officials not to expect any more money this year.

The Republicans are looking for the perfect candidate. Much like people looking for the perfect wife or husband. There is no such thing. Plus much of what the Republican extreme want is unobtainable. There is really no way to maintain the current tax rates and maintain medicare. The most important thing from my perspective if you are looking for Republicans to win the election is a candidate who appeals to the middle and the right. However, if the economy doesn’t improve it may not matter.

No surprises there. Shoulda heard those guys I had dinner with at the Muslim-LDS outreach dinner.
Hey! Remember that (one of many) screeds Scout posted from that minister about how those efforts are all Satanic or something and how Christians can’t speak/preach in a mosque and I told him that wasn’t what I saw at that dinner? (The imam invited the LDS leader to speak in the mosque). Well…. there was another Muslim dinner outreach planned here. Believe it involved a lot of Baptists. Local Tea Party leader and conservative Republican woman blogged and was in the paper about how it was all fake and… sounded like that minister. Anyhow
2,500 people showed up at that little outreach.

One thing is for sure, thumbing through all the major networks that most consider left leaning and seeing how they are going after Cain, tooth and nail shows quite a bit of fear. Cain is the nightmare for Democrats. Christie’s weakness is jobs. In an election which will be about jobs be a governor from a state with a higher unemployment than the national average would be an exploitable agreement. The national average is 9.1 and NJ average is 9.4. Also, while the national average has been trending downward NJ’s has been trending upward. He has the same problem as Perry in that he can’t take advantage of Obama’s main weakness.

Jersey has a habit of electing Goopers who steal from working people. back in the day Christie Whitman (she of the “Ground Zero’s perfectly safe, get back to work!”), played a shell game, promising everyone she’d rescind the hated Florio tax hikes—and she did it by raiding teachers’ pension funds which—surpraaahz, surpraahz!—ran dry, so that *this* fat a-hole could come in and tell state workers not to be so uppity and expecting to actually get paid what they were promised.

@Ryder — is it just possible that the state of NJ was spending too much on schools? I am sick of this nonesense that we can never cut the amount we are spending on public education as if there is NEVER any waste, fraud and abuse in that area. Public school systems like any organization that relies on public funding needs to operate on a strict budget and not just spend money on a bunch of goodies because their is a belieft that taxpayers have an unending supply of money. It is a fact that the state of NJ was losing their wealthier residents in part because of their high tax rates. And in that eastern seaboard where all those states are so close together; it is real easy for a wealthy person to flee to CT and still commute back and forth to NJ.

Putting 30 million on gov’t dole: doesn’t that strike you as just honest accounting? Now, they are receiving some level of care paid for, in many cases, by someone else. Bringing them in under, say, Medicare means the medical community gets only about a fourth of a fifth of the dollars for treatment they would get if they billed direct and someone else picked up the tab. One would think conservatives would support it for that alone!
Jay and also done some columns detailing how, to keep people from having some expensive event, getting insurance, getting treated, dropping insurance and repeating that, how it is necessary, just as with auto or home insurance, to have people keep insurance in force to lower overall costs.

When 30% of Democrats want another candidate and Bozo’s own hometown newspaper asks him to step down and not run, that doesn’t sound like solidarity. Coupled with the fact that over 60% of Democrats poled by Rasmussen stated that they felt that the country is headed in the wrong direction. Also a recent pol which stated that voter enthusiasm on the Republican side was strongly rising while that same enthusiasm on the Democratic side was waning. Throw in Axelrod’s comment about this election being a “Titanic struggle”……. I am not sure that confidence is the one thing Bozo has going for him.

“One of the great weaknesses of the Right in this discussion, it seems to me, it that they take almost any issue dealing with health care reform and label it ’socialized medicine.’”
I would disagree. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t readily acknowledge there is a serious and growing problem with health care and, secondly, that a solution must be found. But, at the same time, I think it that the United States can ill afford missteps in the adoption and implementation of any finally approved program. To me, it would be really refreshing to see a large group of health care workers, thinkers, engineers, analysts, researchers and the like getting together to hash out a truly reasonable, fair and practical solution to this problem. And then have this group present their plan to the American people it will serve for feedback and approval before putting it to a vote in the Congress. The current plan is flawed and it was undeniably rammed through the Congress by the slimmest of margins along partisan lines. It is a Democratic solution, not a bi-partisan one. Health care reform is simply too important and costly to get wrong.

Wonder how our leftist friends distinguish the planned execution of an American who never had a trial vs the execution of one who had a trial and 20 years of appeals. I don’t have a problem with either, but I think I recall distress among the leftists for the latter. The disparate thought-process is what strikes me as curious.

I’ll explain it to you because at times, you tend to show a spark of sanity. I moved from the city to the mountains. Up here, I do exactly as I say. I do my little films. I play my music. I make this pathetic amount of money. I try to be smart with what I buy and I pay my taxes. This blog is my foray into politics.
The comment that I made that the weasel with his nose up my butt is trying to make a big deal of is this: I’ve been an involved Republican since I was 16 and Republicans have never wanted universal health care.
If you think that he has proven anything that I said as a contradiction considering I moved in April, 41 years since I was 16, then you can join his hand and join him with your nose also up my butt.

1) Jose Padilla – my problem was that, if the gov’t had the evidence they SAID they had (re: dirty bomb), they should have gone ahead with the trial. I mean, it’s not like they weren’t holding the guy
2) regarding today’s killing, honestly, I don’t know how I feel about it. IF he did what they said, then he died as he lived and good riddance. A trial would have been nice.
3) my problems with the TDavis killing is that: 1) I’m against the death penalty. period. it doesn’t deter. 2) the fact that people in the jury / prosecution / defense – are fallible and make mistakes. and 3) the supposed eye witnesses recanted their testimony.

If Christie manages to become Potus, the biggest concern should be who is going to be the VP. Since Christie does not appease the evangelicals, watch out for a religious nut to be his running mate… like Bachman. Now, given Christie’s obvious obesity…and the stress of being the potus, it’s not a stretch to worry about a heart attack taking him out…leaving us with Bachman or worse.
Personally, I think someone who is dangerously obese, lack the discipline required to be an effective leader. Moderately overweight is OK…but this man is a walking blimp.

It doesn’t matter what the bloggers here look like (we aren’t toying with the idea of running for president)- it doesn’t even matter what Christi “looks like”. What mattters is that the man is grossly overweight and not suitable to run the country- because of his physical disabilities, and his obvious poor self-discipline and inability to make the most important decisions (his own personal health) appropriately.

1. Christie is no hardliner on immigration

Godfathers ? Nope.
Little Cesars ? Nope.
He served Dominoes . Now it would look like to me that with him being President of Godfather’s pizza that he would serve what he sold for so many years. Instead , he went with Dominoes. For shame.

And how, pray tell, is that even remotely connected to your point – “it would be really refreshing to see a large group of health care workers, thinkers, engineers, analysts, researchers and the like getting together to hash out a truly reasonable, fair and practical solution to this problem”?

Just seems to contradict one another? Also what if does not deter, then why were you for (good riddance)the death penalty being used in this case?”
I also oppose the death penalty, so I’d like to sound off on this.
I don’t think this was a question of a criminal charge (or charges), a prosecution culminating in a courtroom proceeding, then to be followed by imposition of a legal penalty. IMO, this was a matter of national defense, not a death penalty criminal case.
I don’t like the death penalty, but I was also completely comfortable with knowing that OBL had been killed. Why? Because he planned and directed 9/11. I also wouldn’t have been upset — had I been alive then — if we had snuck a SEAL/commando special ops team into Japan to off their military and political leaders during WWII. They planned and executed Pearl Harbor, and deaths happen in warfare.
If we had *caught* the guy, then I could see myself calling for prosecution and incarceration. But unless he wanted to turn himself in or we got very lucky, I didn’t see that happening. That leaves a drone attack, a SEAL/spec ops grab operation or a lucky hit in a bombing raid as the only way we were going to get him — and death’s pretty likely in most of those circumstances.
If terrorists don’t want to turn themselves in and take their chances with our legal system, then I also say good riddance if they get themselves blown up. OTOH, if they *do* turn themselves in, I’m opposed to the death penalty. I realize that may sound foolish to you, but it’s honestly where I stand.

philosopher and ty webb,
It’s not always that simple. Brain chemistry is a powerful thing. Think about it: You are absolutely ravenous after a long, busy day without eating. You’re shaking and getting weak. You sit down to a meal and gobble it up, perhaps even too quickly. Twenty minutes later, your blood sugar is back to normal, your mood has improved, and your stomach feels full, maybe even too full.
Now imagine the same scenario, except no matter how much you eat, you don’t FEEL any better. Your blood sugar and mood do not rise. You’re still shaky and weak. The sense of being sated, NEVER comes. You keep trying. It doesn’t happen. The brain does not respond with “Okay, we’re good now!”
That’s what they deal with every day. They suffer more than we can comprehend. Should they give up trying to remedy the problem? Of course not! But it’s not simply a “character” issue. It’s a chemistry issue.

Rick Perry is “kaput” as most Independent Conservatives will NOT vote for him because of his record and position on illegal immigrants. Most are now considering him George W Bush, Jr. He will soon be out of the race for good. Also, Mr. Christie may as well not even enter. Based on previous statements he is “soft” on illegal immigration too. He said not long ago that “he did not consider illegal immigrants criminals”. That tells me a lot right there. Herman Cain is what this country needs right now. As an Independent Conservative in the “reddest city in the reddest state” (Aiken, SC) I would vote for him in a GA second!

I’m not saying we’re helpless slaves to our cravings, nor am I saying personal responsibility is not a issue. Did you even READ what I wrote? I merely noted that there are factors in play that make sitting down to a reasonably-portioned meal a very different experience for an obese person than for you or me. If brain chemistry is not a powerful factor in pretty much everything, then why is half the country taking (addicted to) SSRI’s every day?
The food industry hires chemists to design processed American crap food to be addictive. It is LITERALLY designed to trigger the brain to want more. Furthermore (as I researched in my own efforts to take personal responsibility for my health), fat cells emit chemicals that trigger the craving for more fat and sugar. Hence, the more fat cells a person has, the more food their brain tells them they need. It’s a vicious cycle that makes the obese person’s struggle DIFFERENT from yours. Yippee for you if you’ve never fallen captive to any kind of addiction, but if that’s the case, then you are really not in a position to judge how addiction affects another person’s brain.

Christie has stated multiple times he is not ready. He may be ready, but, he has not lost the desired weight he said he would shed. The weight problem is an issue. It is an issue because anyone who weighs 300 pounds, perhaps more, does not have the stamina needed for the campaign trail, nor does that person have the stamina for the Office of President. Christie does not have the support of his family, another issue, in addition to the weight. If Christie does join the race and if he is nominated, the choice of a running mate is more crucial for the GOP than ever before. The GOP shot themselves in the foot with the choice of Palin for the 2008 campaign. Christie’s obesity could cause his death or significant incapacitation due to stroke or heart attack, requiring the VP to step in. The Republican party has to look at the VP choice very carefully and not think about winning the female vote by appointing another knucklehead. If they want a female, that would be fine, but, it must be someone with the proper qualifications. As we all know now, Palin was a very bad choice and she did not help the GOP effort at all.

They raised personal and business income taxes by up to 50% across the board – keep in mind what Obama is trying to do now…and their debt actually INCREASED. Plus, CME, Caterpillar, Boeing, United and a host of other companies are preparing to leave the city with 1000s of jobs. You all really don’t get it – the next time you hear Durbin and Obama talking about millionaires and billionaires not paying their fare share – please realize that it doesn’t matter – they will just spend that money, hell, it is already spent on this new “jobs” program:

Weight is an issue he must deal with, but it may affect his decision. Look at the “wear and tear” ALL presidents have gone through. Grey hair, more stress, etc. I’ve been through it, but not at that level. But my concern is with his kids. I lost my father early in life to a heart attack. He was overweight and stressed out. Kids growing up w/o a father is not recomended and something that should drive his decision. I do not condone some of the talk of him being the “Pillsbury Dough Boy” and the smears that accompany it.
I am also surprised by the right wanting him to run and as a result, reduce his time with his family. Is this the family values they expouse? But yet they blindly criticize minorities, mainly African Americans, whose fathers are not around to help raise their children. Don’t get me wrong, I like Christie but drop a few pounds (I know I should also) but before he considers running.

Christie is a politician with a future but he would be foolish to enter the race this year. He would only split the already small moderate Republican vote and assure a cakewalk to the Republican nomination for Perry. As for his own chances, get real–the GOP is controlled by the Teaparty this year and Christie’s views, once scrutinized by him, would assure his rejection. I hate to give advice to the GOP but the best thing for them would be a crushing defeat of Perry by Obama followed by a purge of the extremists from the party.
