Under the headline “Chris Christie seriously considering run for president in 2012,” the Star Ledger in New Jersey reports:
BATON ROUGE — Gov. Chris Christie is seriously rethinking his months of denials and may launch a campaign for the White House after all, a source close to the governor said tonight.
In the last week, Christie has been swayed away from his earlier refusals to run by an aggressive draft effort from a cadre of Republicans and donors unhappy with the GOP field, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity….
At a campaign rally here today for Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Christie continued to criticize Obama’s leadership, but ignored several questions from reporters about whether he would seek the White House.
“If you’re looking for leadership in America you’re not going to find it in the Oval Office,” Christie said today in Baton Rouge.
The rally and a fundraiser afterward capped off a cross-country tour by the governor, where his Reagan Library speech Tuesday served to only stoke speculation that he might reverse course and seek the Republican nomination for president…
In addition, the governor’s wife, Mary Pat, no longer objects to a presidential run, according to an adviser to the governor.
The governor has famously said “my wife would kill me” as a reason not to run. However, a few months ago former first lady Barbara Bush called Mary Pat to assuage her concerns about life in the White House, the adviser said.
If so, welcome to the Big Top, governor. Given factors such as geography (another Northeast governor) and where he falls on the political spectrum, the person with the most to lose from Christie’s entry would be Mitt Romney. And it would certainly add some intrigue to the next Republican debate.

But if I were one of the delusional neo-cons here, I’d have to ask if Christie’s wife was as morbidly obese as Michelle Obama…

“Many of you here act like you have no vices at all and are in 100% perfectly good health.”
Once again, this is not about us-you are using a fallacious argument. This degree of obesity is what is being discussed- it’s not looks and it’s not a “somewhere in the future this will cause me problems” issue. This is immediate. The problems associated with it are already “cooking”…diabetes, heart disease, great vessel disease, stroke, DVT, etc, etc, etc….this guy already in trouble.

The article goes on about “in private with top donors at least, bluntly demands cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to fix the deficit” and “He has little patience for the Tea Party’s wackier culture war fights, notably dismissing panic over sharia law as “crap.”

Just seems to contradict one another? Also what if does not deter, then why were you for (good riddance)the death penalty being used in this case?”
I also oppose the death penalty, so I’d like to sound off on this.
I don’t think this was a question of a criminal charge (or charges), a prosecution culminating in a courtroom proceeding, then to be followed by imposition of a legal penalty. IMO, this was a matter of national defense, not a death penalty criminal case.
I don’t like the death penalty, but I was also completely comfortable with knowing that OBL had been killed. Why? Because he planned and directed 9/11. I also wouldn’t have been upset — had I been alive then — if we had snuck a SEAL/commando special ops team into Japan to off their military and political leaders during WWII. They planned and executed Pearl Harbor, and deaths happen in warfare.
If we had *caught* the guy, then I could see myself calling for prosecution and incarceration. But unless he wanted to turn himself in or we got very lucky, I didn’t see that happening. That leaves a drone attack, a SEAL/spec ops grab operation or a lucky hit in a bombing raid as the only way we were going to get him — and death’s pretty likely in most of those circumstances.
If terrorists don’t want to turn themselves in and take their chances with our legal system, then I also say good riddance if they get themselves blown up. OTOH, if they *do* turn themselves in, I’m opposed to the death penalty. I realize that may sound foolish to you, but it’s honestly where I stand.

It’s not always that simple. Brain chemistry is a powerful thing. Think about it: You are absolutely ravenous after a long, busy day without eating. You’re shaking and getting weak. You sit down to a meal and gobble it up, perhaps even too quickly. Twenty minutes later, your blood sugar is back to normal, your mood has improved, and your stomach feels full, maybe even too full.
Now imagine the same scenario, except no matter how much you eat, you don’t FEEL any better. Your blood sugar and mood do not rise. You’re still shaky and weak. The sense of being sated, NEVER comes. You keep trying. It doesn’t happen. The brain does not respond with “Okay, we’re good now!”
That’s what they deal with every day. They suffer more than we can comprehend. Should they give up trying to remedy the problem? Of course not! But it’s not simply a “character” issue. It’s a chemistry issue.

Righty — “Funny how liberals oppose poring water on someones face but tracking them down and blowing them up with rockets as they peacefully drive down the street is okay. Weird.”
We *prosecuted* people for war crimes for engaging in waterboarding. We signed international agreements forbidding it. And then we went ahead and did it anyway.
I’m not aware of us having signed any agreements not to engage in warfare or to attack valid military targets when we figure out where they are.
Spot the difference.

Joe Mama writes, “A man who can’t control his own weight will have a tough time making the case that he should be entrusted with control of the country.”
A man who couldn’t control his sexual appetite had no problem making the case that he should be entrusted with control of the country.

Considering that Obama will already receive it, your help is not needed.
BTW, there’s a poser of a question for you on a recent thread:

yeah, I remember that george rogers/herschel walker showdown…herschel completely dominated.
Liberallefty,
sorry, but herschel would dominate just as much today… his combination of size and speed have been unequaled since….the same could also be said of Bo Jackson…they broke the mold after those two.

Rick Perry is “kaput” as most Independent Conservatives will NOT vote for him because of his record and position on illegal immigrants. Most are now considering him George W Bush, Jr. He will soon be out of the race for good. Also, Mr. Christie may as well not even enter. Based on previous statements he is “soft” on illegal immigration too. He said not long ago that “he did not consider illegal immigrants criminals”. That tells me a lot right there. Herman Cain is what this country needs right now. As an Independent Conservative in the “reddest city in the reddest state” (Aiken, SC) I would vote for him in a GA second!

And so did a smoker. Shrug.
Your reply in no way diminishes the accuracy and pertinence of my statement; a man who cannot control his weight will have a hard time convicing the electorate to give him control over the country.

@ philospher,
I’m not saying we’re helpless slaves to our cravings, nor am I saying personal responsibility is not a issue. Did you even READ what I wrote? I merely noted that there are factors in play that make sitting down to a reasonably-portioned meal a very different experience for an obese person than for you or me. If brain chemistry is not a powerful factor in pretty much everything, then why is half the country taking (addicted to) SSRI’s every day?
The food industry hires chemists to design processed American crap food to be addictive. It is LITERALLY designed to trigger the brain to want more. Furthermore (as I researched in my own efforts to take personal responsibility for my health), fat cells emit chemicals that trigger the craving for more fat and sugar. Hence, the more fat cells a person has, the more food their brain tells them they need. It’s a vicious cycle that makes the obese person’s struggle DIFFERENT from yours. Yippee for you if you’ve never fallen captive to any kind of addiction, but if that’s the case, then you are really not in a position to judge how addiction affects another person’s brain.

Christie has stated multiple times he is not ready. He may be ready, but, he has not lost the desired weight he said he would shed. The weight problem is an issue. It is an issue because anyone who weighs 300 pounds, perhaps more, does not have the stamina needed for the campaign trail, nor does that person have the stamina for the Office of President. Christie does not have the support of his family, another issue, in addition to the weight. If Christie does join the race and if he is nominated, the choice of a running mate is more crucial for the GOP than ever before. The GOP shot themselves in the foot with the choice of Palin for the 2008 campaign. Christie’s obesity could cause his death or significant incapacitation due to stroke or heart attack, requiring the VP to step in. The Republican party has to look at the VP choice very carefully and not think about winning the female vote by appointing another knucklehead. If they want a female, that would be fine, but, it must be someone with the proper qualifications. As we all know now, Palin was a very bad choice and she did not help the GOP effort at all.

@Practical Matti : As a healthcare professional and someone who has “fallen captive” to food addiction, I have first hand knowledge AND experience. It takes self-discipline and a sense of responsibility to one’s self and one’s loved ones ( so that they don’t ALSO pay for my lack of self-control, poor choices, and poor decisions) to stop repeating self-destructive actions…and I expect a candidate for president to be able to do no less.
