I hate to bring this up on the morning after the Braves completed their monumental collapse, but ….
“The Atlanta region lost more jobs the last year than any other metro area, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday, further evidence that the post-recessionary slump here shows little sign of abating.
Metro Atlanta shed 30,800 jobs since August 2010. Kansas City — 12,800 positions erased — was the closest competitor in job-losses. Nearly all of Atlanta’s peer metro areas added at least some jobs amid the slow economic recovery.”
… “Out of almost 400 metropolitan areas, we’re dead last and nobody is competing with us for that distinction,” said Chris Cunningham, a BLS statistician in Atlanta. “It’s pretty bad and it has been the same story for the last two, three years.”
I don’t get it.
You mean that a strategy of cutting taxes lower and lower, of refusing to spend money to modernize the transportation system that made you prosperous in the first place, of slashing state support for k-12 and higher education year after year, of kowtowing to developers and other businesses at the expense of quality of life for those who actually live here, of largely ignoring the needs of your state’s largest metro area — you mean that doesn’t work?
After all that, this is what we get?

First of all I was born and raised in America but I have Scandinavian lineage.
Guess what? The Swedish economy is in so much better shape that the U.S. we could actually learn something from them. They have a booming free-market economy. Their people are highly educated and secondary education is free or affordable for just about anyone in the country. They have some of the best healthcare in the world
The idiots under the Gold Dome will continue to keep their heads in the sand with lower taxes, hating blacks and fags and loving them sum killin of potentially innocents by lethal injection, paying lip service to Jesus and sleeping with their guns.

As far as throwing the race card around, about the only good place that halfway stands up is in the debate about bringing MARTA to Gwinnett and Cobb. As jay has mentioned here before, check out DC metro before forming an opinion based on the transit bringing thugs into suburbia. I lived in DC and saw no such thing. The eastern green line riders from the mlk/malcom x blvd areas never rode all the way out to Reston or chevy chase.
Go ask the Lennox Square merchants how their customer mix changed when the Lenox MARTA station opened.

One principal concern for me is the potential deleterious effects upon children they raise. And don’t tell me about these liberal “studies” that suggest their is none. If you get upset that there have not been long term studies or drugs that have proved to be harmful to people over time, then you should have the same concern for possible psychological and social consequences. If you are unwilling to bet your own life on your staked position is such important matters, then you shouldn’t be so eager to introduce such a huge change.

Not even Bookman is stupid enough to believe that the reason Atlanta is in the dumps is lower taxes and refusal to spend money on transportation. The polls cited by Bookman show that the voters are very willing to spend money on projects that actually relieve congestion. He knows very well that the city of Atlanta was a giant real estate bubble, hardly caused by kowtowing. Of course in Bookman-land we must rewrite history to “prove” the need for more agressive, more “progressive” government.

@ mountain man, I’m sure it did change some but don’t forget that the “ghetto” dispersion had occurred throughout Atlanta about the same time as the newer Marta stops. The demolition of public housing had something to do with it as well, however you feel about that topic. The fact is that Atlanta is pretty much a crap city everywhere now as the thug lifestyle and culture is praised by music and tv stars in the area and also some in city leadership over the years. In most other cities there are pretty major diving lines of where the good parts end and the bad parts begin. Not so with Atlanta and I don’t think MARTA is to blame. Look at the degradation of places like lawrenceville that fought to keep MARTA out of Gwinnett. There are clearly other factors at play in the plight of a city.

My muched loved and muched spoiled neice (niece?) is a product of such a union. My sister in law is gay and she and her wife gave me the best present EVAH, a beautiful neice to love and cherish. Will she suffer any “delet–whatever” problems growing up? Probably no more than any other kid growing up in a hyper-sexual, MTV, anti-logic, society. But will she have two parents who love her and an aunt who ADORES her to help her along the way? You betcha.
And don’t tell me about these liberal “studies” that suggest their is none. If you get upset that there have not been long term studies or drugs that have proved to be harmful to people over time, then you should have the same concern for possible psychological and social consequences.
There are perhaps millions of people who grew up with a supposedly straight mom and dad and later found out that their parent(s) was gay. Not all of them jumped from buildings in shame, some actually decided to deal with it, still love their parents, and move on with their lives.
If you are unwilling to bet your own life on your staked position is such important matters, then you shouldn’t be so eager to introduce such a huge change
I don’t get that part. How is allowing someone to marry who they love, gay/straight/bisexual “betting” my life on a position?

Strawman: principal concern for me is the potential deleterious effects upon children they raise
As far as I can tell, worrying about the “potential deleterious effects upon children they raise” is another false attack. If we were truly worried about those effects, why do we not focus on single parent families, improving parental skills of any family, worry about the potential effects of radical biblical beliefs or conservatism, or any of the other factors which may have an effect upon children. Why are we not focused on educating and training any and all people to be good parents, no matter what their sexual orientation.

“Atlanta’s great collapse ”
Too much fried chicken, hamburgers, Krispy Kreme donuts, BBQ aided and abetted by an overly auto-dependent society and roads clogged with cars. And dehydrated from lack of water.

Tea party gets bad rap for telling truth
From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110929/OPINION03/109290333/Tea-party-gets-bad-rap-for-telling-truth#ixzz1ZMfbaZoh
Best I can tell, their major offense is holding Washington accountable. Listen to them, as I did on Mackinac Island last week during the Republican Leadership Conference, and the only demand you hear is that politicians stop mortgaging America’s future to reckless spending and swelling deficits.
All they want is for politicians to finally do what both Democrats and Republicans always said they’d do — make the government live within its means — but never got around to doing until the tea party forced their hand.
In other words, THE TEA PARTY IS THE ADULT in a roomful of overindulged children who resent the call to accountability. How much greater would the debt be today, how much larger the deficit, if the tea party hadn’t shouted, “Enough!”

From Jay’s link: “Once marriage is no longer confined to a man and a woman,” Dailey warned, “it is impossible to exclude virtually any relationship between two or more partners of either sex even nonhuman ‘partners.’
I think I have a solution. Instead of defining marriage as between a man and a woman, define it as “between two HUMAN beings.” That way no one can marry their dog.
Unless of course the dog really, really, really wants to get married.

Jay,
Steve’s earlier comment is relevant. While I know the figures you site our the Atlanta Metro region as a whole; the city of Atlanta certainly has a role in that, wouldn’t you agree?
Maybe if we didn’t have entire school districts loosing accreditation (see Clayton County) or public officials instructing teachers in our flagship district to cheat on tests, maybe our persception might be a little better. Oh, I forgot, that doesn’t suit your agenda so you won’t include that aspect.
I always forget, if we were to only build rail in Alanta, gold would fall from the sky and this would be utopia….gosh, silly me

BTW, Jay as a conservative I USED to stand up for you. Occasionally I found points I would agree with you on. However, yesterday, when you made the comment to the affect of you would have to be a crazy to be in the Republican party, you totally lost all respect. I know you are paid to write editorials, but that was over the line and totally unprofessional.
At least Kyle actually bangs on the Republcians when he disagrees and feels they are out of line. You have flown so far over the top at this point, I don’t think I will even continue to read your articles. Its not even written with any sort of thought at this point

jm: THE TEA PARTY IS THE ADULT
I would almost agree with that, except when the fear of ANY tax increase to balance the budget is met with such disdain.
Spending cuts AND tax increases (or revenue increases if you like) are both needed to balance the budget and pay down the debt.
When they come up with “Taxed Enough Already” when we have one of the lowest tax rates in living history, then well. . . they lose credibility. Lots of credibility.

The minute the Tea Party stops screaming about taxes and spending and shows a REAL COMMITMENT to retiring our national debt — which means revenue increases IN ADDITION to spending cuts — then I’ll start paying attention to them.
AFAICS, they’re one-trick ponies, and there’s nothing adult about cutting spending AND revenue at the same time.

Secondly, let’s put you in the dock a bit: what are the grounds for your moral positions? Is is what the majority thinks? What seems right to you at this point in time? Do you think adultery is okay (it’s not illegal any more you know)? How about having sex with a 13 year old as an adult (people married at this age in earlier times you know)? You answer some of these questions and I will answer you rather dumb and contrived question about slippery slopes…deal?

Jay has this half right, transportation absolutely is an issue when companies chose not to relocate here, but so is local government. I have lived in the city of Atlanta for eleven years and would not operate a business within city limits. Our water bills are atrocious, our elevated property taxes do not reflect market conditions and the mayor seems more interested in drumming up support for Obama’s second term than doing his job. Also political parties share in the blame, California has hemorraged jobs the past decade and look who runs that state- my goodness they just elected a 70’s relic out there.

C’mon son, you’re being a little uh selective there in your example selection, don’t you think?
You mention California’s ungovernability and neglect to mention Mistah Terminata, their artificially imposed budget restrictions which go back decades and are directly attributable to its disastrous ballot initiatives and direct democracy?
You mention the Atlanta mayor’s plugging for Obama but neglect to mention the financial and budgetary pressures put on the city by a hostile political and cultural environment?
Why the selective vision?

And your point is?
Yes, they have retained their monarchy as a constitutional monarchy as part of their heritage. They have a King, we have football stars.
Yes, wealth is relatively distributed across the populace. There are many wealthy Swedes as well but when I talk to many of my friends that are highly educated people that could have more MONEY if they lived somewhere else they reply that they are very content with their lives and are glad poverty is limited.
No, nothing is free. You are correct they pay very high taxes. The point being, however, that every student that has the aptitude and desire to get a furhter education doesn’t leave school in debt thousands of dollars. They have, on average, a much more highly educated workforce than in this country.
Children in their school system actually leave it with solid skills in reading, writing, math, science, history.
They don’t fear getting sick. They don’t fear growing old and living in poverty.
They cherish their free time and mandate it. They believe that new borns should bond with their parents and mandate extensive maternal and paternal leave.
And year after year when measurements are made of overall happiness, Sweden, not unlike most other European countries, ranks much higher than the U.S. Most of them aren’t driven by the need to accmulate more and more stuff in order to be happy. What is wrong with that?
