The flat-out paranoia of the NRA and Wayne LaPierre

Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, gave me a call at home the other day. In the taped message, my friend Wayne warned me that unless I and other patriotic Americans stepped forward to stop it, the dastardly United Nations, with Iran, China, North Korea and other evil countries behind it, would soon come into our country and into our very homes, strip the Second Amendment out of the Constitution and “take away every pistol, and rifle and shotgun” that we owned.

Riiiggghhht. I just have one question though:

How is the UN going to accomplish this? Are they going to import little bulbous-headed men from Mars toting rayguns to take away our weapons? If so, I’m clinging to my copy of Slim Whitman singing “Indian Love Call” and you can’t have it until you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Nosireebob.

Look, I recognize that the boundary between serious and seriously crazy has shifted considerably in recent years. But doesn’t this kind of nonsense still qualify on the fully crazy side of the ledger?

The ostensible cause of LaPierre’s hysteria is something called the International Arms Trade Treaty. If ratified by the United Nations and then by the U.S. Senate, it would require countries exporting conventional arms to certify that the weapons aren’t being sent to a terrorist or organized crime group, such as Hezbollah, and that they aren’t being sent to a nation conducting genocide or to a nation under a U.N. arms embargo, such as Iran and North Korea.

It would have no effect whatsoever on domestic ownership, possession or purchase of firearms. Such a claim is politically, practically, legally and constitutionally absurd. So why is Wayne LaPierre calling me and others to pretend otherwise?

Money is part of the reason. The United States accounts for 40 percent of the world’s exports of conventional arms, and the U.S. arms industry is nervous about legislation that might curtail their right to sell arms to whomever they wish. Those manufacturers, not coincidentally, are also heavy donors to the NRA, which is trying to whip up hysteria on their behalf.

In addition, such hysteria is part of the NRA’s own strategy for raising money for its coffers. Once the LaPierre robo-rant about the UN finished, for example, an operator quickly came on line to ask me to donate money to the NRA. I politely declined.

Finally, it’s also a matter of increasingly delusional paranoia infecting the NRA. Prior to the ‘08 election, the gun group warned its members that Barack Obama had a secret 10-point plan to end gun ownership in this country.

Point One was a federal ban on the use of guns for home defense. Point Three was a ban on the sale, manufacture and possession of handguns. Point Four was the closure of 90 percent of American gunshops. Federal taxes on guns and ammunition were supposed to go up 500 percent, and the sale of ammunition for hunting rifles was supposed to be banned altogether.

As you may recall, that bit of hysteria touched off quite a spree of gun-buying after the election, boosting the profits of the NRA’s sponsors in the gun industry. In fact, as ammunition disappeared from store shelves, that itself was quickly cited as evidence that ammo confiscation was already underway. The NRA, in other words, played its own members for patsies.

Today, three years later, none of that has come to pass. Obama has made no effort whatsoever to alter the nation’s gun laws. So, given their hyperbolic claims, you might think that would make LaPierre and others a little embarrassed, right? It’s like when evangelist Harold Camping predicted that the world would end on May 21. When he woke up May 22, you just know he felt at least a wee bit sheepish about it, right?

Well, no. Camping did no such thing, because you see, Camping is crazy. Instead of apologizing, he announced that May 21 had merely been the day of spiritual judgment, and that God was really coming to destroy the universe on Oct. 21, 2011. And that’s exactly the course that LaPierre and the NRA are taking.

In a speech at a conservative conference in Florida this month, LaPierre explained that by taking no action to implement his alleged 10-point program, Obama had actually proved that the NRA had been right all along.

You see, “before the president was even sworn into office, they met and hatched a conspiracy of public deception to guarantee his re-election in 2012″ by just PRETENDING not to seize guns. The failure to act “is all part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment.”

“We see the president’s strategy crystal clear. Get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms freedom. Erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and exorcise it from the U.S. Constitution….

President Obama and his cohorts — yeah, they’re going to deny their conspiracy to fool gun owners. Some of the liberal media are probably already blogging about it. But we don’t care because as far as we’re concerned, that lying, conniving Obama crowd can kiss our Constitution!”

The fact that such people have considerable influence over our nation’s policies — for example, 45 senators have signed a letter condemning the arms trade treaty, including the two from Georgia — does not speak well of us.

UDT is underwater demolition team which is part of SEALS training. Don’t know bout your pit bulls but I’ve seen the mean type but a lot of friendly ones lately. Wussiest dog I know is a large pit bull- wouldn’t hurt a flea. I also was jogging a few weeks ago and I saw a pit bull that was running full gallup towards me as he had escaped his yard. You cannot imagine the relief I had when I saw his tail wagging as he was sprinting toward me. He was out to love me to death as opposed to a good mauling.

Debbie, with all due respect, there were a number of factors that contributed to Merrideth Emerson’s death. crime is about motive, oportunity, and capacity. dogs are “designed” to hunt in packs. there are very few breeds that can take down an adult male human. would a German Shepherd or Rottweiler, bought her some time, or created a distraction; perhaps? but this is all speculation. and as a martial arts instructor once told me; you can be Bruce Lee, but if somebody hits you in the head with a beer bottle or cue stick, you’re probably going down.

***********************
U.N. Agreement Should Have All Gun Owners Up In Arms

“It may not come as surprising news to many of you that the United Nations doesn’t approve of our Second Amendment. Not one bit. And they very much hope to do something about it with help from some powerful American friends. Under the guise of a proposed global “Small Arms Treaty” premised to fight “terrorism”, “insurgency” and “international crime syndicates” you can be quite certain that an even more insidious threat is being targeted – our Constitutional right for law-abiding citizens to own and bear arms.

What, exactly, does the intended agreement entail?”…Do we have to pass it to find out what’s in it?

…”Although professing to support the Second Amendment during her presidential election bid, Hillary Clinton is not generally known as a gun rights enthusiast. She has been a long-time activist for federal firearms licensing and registration, and a vigorous opponent of state Right-to-Carry laws. As a New York senator she ranked among the National Rifle Association’s worst “F”-rated gun banners who voted to support the sort of gunpoint disarmament that marked New Orleans’ rogue police actions against law-abiding gun owners in the anarchistic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

President Obama’s record on citizen gun rights doesn’t reflect much advocacy either. Consider for example his appointment of anti-gun rights former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels as an alternate U.S. representative to the U.N., and his choice of Andrew Traver who has worked to terminate civilian ownership of so-called “assault rifles” (another prejudicially meaningless gun term) to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Then, in a move unprecedented in American history, the Obama administration quietly banned the re-importation and sale of 850,000 collectable antique U.S.-manufactured M1 Garand and Carbine rifles that were left in South Korea following the Korean War. Developed in the 1930s, the venerable M1 Garand carried the U.S. through World War II, seeing action in every major battle.

As an Illinois state senator, Barack Obama was an aggressive advocate for expanding gun control laws, and even voted against legislation giving gun owners an affirmative defense when they use firearms to defend themselves and their families against home invaders and burglars. He also served on a 10-member board of directors of the radically activist anti-gun Joyce Foundation in Chicago during a period between 1998-2001when it contributed $18,326,183 in grants to anti-Second Amendment organizations“…

Joe – A Shepherd or Rottweiler might not have been able to take someone down by themselves, but there is a strong possibility (going off the opportunity bit) that she wouldn’t have been attacked if she were hiking with a Shepherd, Rotti or Pit. The odds are stacked too high against the attacker walking away unharmed. Even so, if the dog distracts the attacker, if you know what you’re doing, you’re either gone or joining the dog in the attack.

Public doesn’t have access to such animals. I do agree that criminals stalk their prey, and perhaps the predator who attacked her might have considered the breed, but labs can be as viscious as any dog (I have a nice scar on my hand from breaking up a fight between my friend’s Lab and a feral dog). Joe T.P.: there are very few breeds that can take down an adult male human. would a German Shepherd or Rottweiler, bought her some time, or created a distraction; perhaps?

Big dogs like Shepherds are a BIG deterrent and they can and hvae taken down adult males. Shepherds work with law enforcement and are valuable members of the team. Could a more vicious dog have bought her some time or have even protected her when she was knocked unconcious? I think so. I also think he (the killer) probably would not have approached her if she would’ve had a more vicious dog by her side. He approached her because she looked susceptible and “weak”. He had made sure that her dog was friendly and approachable FIRST before he attacked her. I think, IMO, a dog trained to defend it’s owner (or have a more aggressive personality), could’ve probably saved her life.

But, I am also of opinion of “Sometimes It’s just your time”; and if that was the case with Ms. Emerson than nothing, short of God, could’ve saved her.

In fact, the practice used to be to put the dog down if the handler got KIA. again, would the guy have looked elsewhere had she a Rottweiler? maybe, but that is more speculation than anything. and just because he “confesed” to ‘checking out the dog’ first doesn’t mean it happened, or that had she not felt threatened, a Rotweiler or shepherd would have reacted differently. I will not speak ill of the dead, but another homo sapien companion is actually the best deterent. and this is my point; all this talk of “protection” is something of a myth, and what groups like the NRA rely upon to scare (drive) voters to the left or the right.

How is it paranoia when firearms rights have been under attack for the past 200 years? Every firearms law made is an infringement of the 2nd amendment and they only hurt the good guys, the bad guys don’t obey laws.

Thulsa, all I can say is, in my now 30 years in this business, I have never seen a lobby more powerful than the NRA. It’s not even close.

Jay,

And you would be wrong. Very wrong according to the Forbes list of most powerful lobbys. It was bad enough to say that the NRA is the most powerful lobby but its doubly bad that you stated that no one else is even close. Huh? Not only is the NRA not only not the most powerful but its not even in the top 5.

Did you really think they would be more powerful than the Israeli lobby, the seniors-AARP, the Trial lawyers and their mega billions in lawsuits, etc.?

Fortune polled members of Congress, top congressional staffers, senior White House aides, top officers of lobbying organizations and professional lobbyists, asking them to rank the clout of 120 leading interest groups. The American Association of Retired Persons got top ranking in the Fortune survey, which was conducted this fall by Democratic pollster Mark Mellman and Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

After AIPAC, the AFL-CIO, the National Federation of Independent Business and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America rounded out the top five.

The National Rifle Association, the Christian Coalition, the American Medical Association, the National Education Association and the National Right to Life Committee completed the top 10 list.

Hey Paul I’m wondering what do you think about Texas A&M joining the SEC? I was over on ESPN’s blog, (also AJC has a similiar blog about it today), yesterday and the Texas fans were sooo RUDE!! You’d think that A&M owed them money or something how they were carrying on! Is this a pervasive sentiment in Texas, (Good Riddance to A&M); or was it just blog macho talk?

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, North Carolina, according to the Raleigh News and Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.””

From Jay:

“Thulsa, all I can say is, in my now 30 years in this business, I have never seen a lobby more powerful than the NRA. It’s not even close.”

………………. and thank God it is.

How do you think this country was founded or has been kept free all of these years?

By debate? Persuasion? Ideas? Beliefs? The “Vote”?

Yes …………… and all made possible only by “the gun” !

“THE GUN IS CIVILIZATION” by Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret)

“Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force.

If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force.

Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion.
Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations.
These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat–it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.

People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone.

The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

It removes force from the equation… and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.”

The above is true among MEN and NATIONS.

Paul,

And football aint religion in Alabama? Judging by the success of the 2 Alabama programs compared to the Texas programs I would say the football religion folks in Alabama are religious zealots while the ones in Texas are once in a blue moon worshipers. We disrespect Texas football. And what was that saying they like to say in Texas “Don’t mess with Texas”? Well. Alabama sure messes with Texas. To the tune of 37-21 in the 2009 bcs title game we sure messed with Tejas.

In its most political ad in the so-called “Drive One” ads where real drivers are thrust before cameras to explain why they picked Ford, a real Ford F-150 pick-up driver is featured.

His name is Chris. After he sits down the “reporters” bark “Chris, Chris.” One asks him to explain why “was buying American important to you.”

flat-out paranoia??? Seems the following Ford ad was pulled at the request of ???

Sitting and looking sincere and serious, Chris says: “I wasn’t going to buy another car that was bailed out by our government. I was going to buy from a manufacturer that’s standing on their own: win, lose, or draw. That’s what America is about is taking the chance to succeed and understanding when you fail that you gotta’ pick yourself up and go back to work. Ford is that company for me.”
