The flat-out paranoia of the NRA and Wayne LaPierre

Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, gave me a call at home the other day. In the taped message, my friend Wayne warned me that unless I and other patriotic Americans stepped forward to stop it, the dastardly United Nations, with Iran, China, North Korea and other evil countries behind it, would soon come into our country and into our very homes, strip the Second Amendment out of the Constitution and “take away every pistol, and rifle and shotgun” that we owned.

Riiiggghhht. I just have one question though:

How is the UN going to accomplish this? Are they going to import little bulbous-headed men from Mars toting rayguns to take away our weapons? If so, I’m clinging to my copy of Slim Whitman singing “Indian Love Call” and you can’t have it until you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Nosireebob.

Look, I recognize that the boundary between serious and seriously crazy has shifted considerably in recent years. But doesn’t this kind of nonsense still qualify on the fully crazy side of the ledger?

The ostensible cause of LaPierre’s hysteria is something called the International Arms Trade Treaty. If ratified by the United Nations and then by the U.S. Senate, it would require countries exporting conventional arms to certify that the weapons aren’t being sent to a terrorist or organized crime group, such as Hezbollah, and that they aren’t being sent to a nation conducting genocide or to a nation under a U.N. arms embargo, such as Iran and North Korea.

It would have no effect whatsoever on domestic ownership, possession or purchase of firearms. Such a claim is politically, practically, legally and constitutionally absurd. So why is Wayne LaPierre calling me and others to pretend otherwise?

Money is part of the reason. The United States accounts for 40 percent of the world’s exports of conventional arms, and the U.S. arms industry is nervous about legislation that might curtail their right to sell arms to whomever they wish. Those manufacturers, not coincidentally, are also heavy donors to the NRA, which is trying to whip up hysteria on their behalf.

In addition, such hysteria is part of the NRA’s own strategy for raising money for its coffers. Once the LaPierre robo-rant about the UN finished, for example, an operator quickly came on line to ask me to donate money to the NRA. I politely declined.

Finally, it’s also a matter of increasingly delusional paranoia infecting the NRA. Prior to the ‘08 election, the gun group warned its members that Barack Obama had a secret 10-point plan to end gun ownership in this country.

Point One was a federal ban on the use of guns for home defense. Point Three was a ban on the sale, manufacture and possession of handguns. Point Four was the closure of 90 percent of American gunshops. Federal taxes on guns and ammunition were supposed to go up 500 percent, and the sale of ammunition for hunting rifles was supposed to be banned altogether.

As you may recall, that bit of hysteria touched off quite a spree of gun-buying after the election, boosting the profits of the NRA’s sponsors in the gun industry. In fact, as ammunition disappeared from store shelves, that itself was quickly cited as evidence that ammo confiscation was already underway. The NRA, in other words, played its own members for patsies.

Today, three years later, none of that has come to pass. Obama has made no effort whatsoever to alter the nation’s gun laws. So, given their hyperbolic claims, you might think that would make LaPierre and others a little embarrassed, right? It’s like when evangelist Harold Camping predicted that the world would end on May 21. When he woke up May 22, you just know he felt at least a wee bit sheepish about it, right?

Well, no. Camping did no such thing, because you see, Camping is crazy. Instead of apologizing, he announced that May 21 had merely been the day of spiritual judgment, and that God was really coming to destroy the universe on Oct. 21, 2011. And that’s exactly the course that LaPierre and the NRA are taking.

In a speech at a conservative conference in Florida this month, LaPierre explained that by taking no action to implement his alleged 10-point program, Obama had actually proved that the NRA had been right all along.

You see, “before the president was even sworn into office, they met and hatched a conspiracy of public deception to guarantee his re-election in 2012″ by just PRETENDING not to seize guns. The failure to act “is all part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment.”

“We see the president’s strategy crystal clear. Get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearms freedom. Erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and exorcise it from the U.S. Constitution….

President Obama and his cohorts — yeah, they’re going to deny their conspiracy to fool gun owners. Some of the liberal media are probably already blogging about it. But we don’t care because as far as we’re concerned, that lying, conniving Obama crowd can kiss our Constitution!”

The fact that such people have considerable influence over our nation’s policies — for example, 45 senators have signed a letter condemning the arms trade treaty, including the two from Georgia — does not speak well of us.

Oh right, you only say it when you say it. Like when Rick Perry says SS is a Ponzi Scheme and we’re supposed to believe he isn’t saying anything fraudulent is going on and he wants to fix it instead of get rid of it.

If your home phone number is listed, then you probably will get the call. Check your caller ID. The name is NRA and the calls all came from numbers beginning in 703-656, with the extension varying slightly on each call. I asked how he they got my number, and the solicitor said he didn’t know. He did not seem to think I was already a member, because he kept saying things to scare me into joining. Bless his heart.

Jay, reading that bizarre screed at 3:08, confirms what I have suspected for a long time.

To the violence-addicts, the Second Amendment, NOT the First Amendment is the cornerstone of our democracy.

I say we get rid of that silly nonsense about establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances, and move the Second to it’s rightful place…

OK Jay ….. “In fact, as ammunition disappeared from store shelves, that itself was quickly cited as evidence that ammo confiscation was already underway.” please attribute that quote to an NRA official.
I have been a Life member of the NRA for many years and I have never seen that quote from the NRA.
You want evidence , California libs are trying to pass a prohibitive tax (10cents per cartridge) on ammunition.
Maryland libs trying to get additives added to ammunition to cause ammunition to break down after a period of time, making it useless.
Mass libs trying to get trace chemicals added to powder to allow tracing of ammunition (and fouling of firearms making them unusuable over time).
Chicago, DC and New York City outlawing firearm possession (directly opposed to the US Constitution).
Step back to 1994 when the Clinton admin married itself to Handgun Control Inc. They attributed a major part of their defeat that year to the NRA……and they advised all Democrat politicians to back off gun control if they wanted to be elected to office.
Are you a member of the NRA? is that why you got the call? I have been a member for many years and I have never gotten a fundraising call (although every time I log onto my webmail I get a pop-up from the Obama campaign asking for money!! I won’t argue with you on the nuttiness of LaPierre and the gun obsession crowd. Never owned a gun and probably never will although I have no problem whatsoever with people who do.

Regarding the arms trade treaty common sense tells you that there is something wrong with that treaty if 45 U.S. senators, including numerous Democrats, opposed the bill. Rather than concentrating on the fringe element like LaPierre I think your blog audience would have been better served had you concentrated on the specific reasons why the overwhelming majority of the senators opposed it. I seriously doubt you can chalk up 45 out of 50 being against it solely to the influence of the NRA when many conservatives such as myself don’t even care about the NRA.

Keep – Too funny!

JoeM: My wife and I heartily endorse Chow Chows. Quiet, clean, well-behaved. And SPOOKY smart, and creepily observant. They watch what you do and seem to pick up on hoomin things almost immediately. My wife swears ours understand what we say; whether or not they obey us is something else entirely.

I like Chows but I thought you can only have one at a time, (like Akita’s) because they can’t get along with others. I like my pit bulls because they’re affectionate and LOVE to play!! Dudley was the one who made me, (even though I thank him now — don’t tell him though it’ll give him a big water head), get a more aggressive dog after that girl got murdered in the Georgia mountains on New Year’s Day a few years back, (Meredith somebody). Her dog was so gentle, it just sat there and let her be violated and brutally killed while it just barked and rolled over.

I like a playful dog, but I need something that’s going to rip the throat out of anyone who approaches me in a threatening way too.

Jay,

Do you have anything showing that the majority of these senators voted this way primarily due to NRA lobbying and pressure? As I said I think you could have better served your audience by specifying why senators, particularly the liberal ones, voted against the treaty as opposed to simply attributing the vote to NRA influence.

Perhaps I need to get out more in the con community but I personally don’t know one con who is a con primarily due to the gun debate. And I do know quite a few liberals who sure as hell aint gonna give up their guns to anyone. Debbiedo would probably be a good example.

I was raised in the rural south and hunting was a way of life for us. Between my father, brother and myself I would guess we owned 18 to 20 rifles and shotguns all locked in a gun cabinet that only my father had access to. But we did not own a single handgun, assault rifle or automatic weapon.

I remember my father saying “some guns are made for hunting, other are made for killing.” No one is looking to limit the number of hunting guns anyone owns.

Georgia City Bans Bras on Local Streets—Fox News

It’s Savannah—I might of knowed. I’ll be sure and not go there. Who wants to see a bunch of fat women flopping all over the place? First the guns, now the bras. Ain’t nothing sacred anymore?

D. DoRight — “this stuff called gruhwine which is a warm red wine”

*Gluhwein,* perhaps? Quite literally, ‘glow-wine,’ because it makes you glow?

“Chicken Marsala is what I’ll be learning to make next week. I’m hoping mine will turn out as good as the one at Carrabba’s.”

IIRC, you’re an Auburn grad, so this might be of interest to you if you venture back to AL anytime soon. My wife was visiting her parents in Huntsville a few years ago (her brother lives in Huntsville and her parents were visiting him, his wife and their new baby, but my wife and her brother do not get along), and on her way back, she felt like it’d be a good idea to have a bottle of good gin for when she got home (decompression purposes, you understand). So she stopped at an AL state ABC store.

Whereupon she discovered that they stock the hell out of an inexpensive Marsala. And it turned out to be *remarkably good* for the cost. So if you have cause to visit AL anytime soon (maybe going to a home Auburn game), you might want to make a side trip to an AL state store and pick up a bottle or two for cooking. I highly recommend pork loin chops Marsala in the fall. :D

Let me ask you a question Joe,
Do you have auto insurance? Why, do you expect to cause an accident? If not you don’t need auto insurance.
I have life insurance, i.e. a concealed carry permit. It gives me an option if I happen to be in a life threatening situation. If you are not armed it is the criminal’s option as to whether you live or die….if you are armed you have a choice.
I was an MP in Vietnam and have used a firearm to protect myself and others.
Ask any law officer if they are there to prevent crime, that is not their job, if they do it is ancillary to their job, they are there to investigate and solve crimes. i.e. you don’t call a police officer until a crime is committed, they have no jurisdiction until then, they are not bodyguards.
Its your responsibility to protect yourself and your family. I plan on being proactive and giving myself a choice!

Well you knew it wouldn’t be long before some supposedly enlightened progressive would show his ignorance by positing that bigotry towards one particular group is A-okay. Finn McCool is the same sort of racist that decrys racism but yet exhibits the same brand of bigotry as those he claims to detest.

This is fundraising and shameless, carnybarker fundraising at that. The proof is in the pudding, folks. The second amendment is like ALL amdendments; it’s a pacifier. There is not “right to bear arms” because the state can sellectively honor or disregard this for any reason. LaPierre is like a “pump and dump” stockbroker or short seller. Anyone who shoots saw firearm and ammo prices spike when Obama was elected; simply because of the “he’s gonna take your guns” chicken little crowd. In this economy, do you think arms merchants would fall behind in production? It’s the oldest play in the book, folks. It’s like the DADT will destroy the military, same-sex marriage will destroy society, and No Child Left Behind is “for the children”. Hey DDR, if you can shoot, the black belt isn’t worth anyting beyond keeping your trousers up, and pit bulls, while dangerous to other dogs, are pretty human compatible.

The NRA ………….. hummmmmmmm ………… like most organizations they have an agenda, are far from perfect, need lots of money, lobby hard, use hyperbole and …………. and ……………….. if it didn’t exist our guns and our right to carry them would have pretty much been gone years ago.

Thank God for the imperfect NRA !!

Well if Republican’s can believe ………

Bin Laden and Saddam were working together………then they will believe this, and many other tall tales !

Thus the crazy attitude put forth to create chaos……. Cause when all else fails ….like sound policy, then the Right will have to cause chaos…..heck did they ever balance the budget as planned or end the made up war ?

The Republican’s certainly have done zero in the last 5 years.

Maybe the NRA ought to have a prayer meeting about this ?

The NRA does have a tendency to go off the deep end with some of its horse-sh*t and that’s coming from a die-hard Second Amendment purist…

Debbie–I’m glad you’re my friend…but any woman living alone who doesn’t know those things and have a gun might want to rethink…

D. Doright — “I like Chows but I thought you can only have one at a time, (like Akita’s) because they can’t get along with others.”

Unless and until you are familiar with the breed, I strongly recommend not having more than one *female* Chow at a time. Female Chows can be *very* aggressive, dominant and bossy, and they will test the hell out of you. Ours was like a little Chinese empress in her puppyhood. Our older male Chow put the smackdown on her, tho, and things went better after that. A couple of years later, we introduced our Chows to a female Chow we were considering adopting, and I thought our little lady was going to try to rip the other girl’s throat out (the potential adoptee enthusiastically returned the sentiment).

I once saw three beautiful young Akitas in a county animal shelter, and they seemed to be getting along fine. So well, in fact, that they creeped my wife out. She said they looked like they were mobbed up (Yakuza gang?) and would hold us hostage until we came across with treats and squeaky toys.
