Earlier in the week, I was trying to decide which John Coltrane cut I was going to post tonight, given that this would have been the saxophonist’s 85th birthday. Then, well, news happened. R.E.M. announced it was disbanding, which means Trane got pushed aside.
Sorry John (although the guys at R.E.M. are big fans of yours, I hear).
I came to R.E.M. relatively late, at least compared to a lot of folks here in Georgia. But from my first exposure I marveled at their distinctive sound and the fact that somehow, they could come off both lush and economical in their music. Their lyrics were special as well, often funny if absurdly opaque, reaching for and sometimes attaining poetry.
More than any band I can think of, you always wanted to know what their next album would sound like, because it was bound to head off in a new and interesting direction. Following their career was a musical adventure, and after 31 years it has now come to an end.
Thanks, guys. Here’s one of my favorites, as much because of the memories it inspires as much as the music itself:

as I mentioned on KW’s blog, I was a casual REM fan at best, but they were the real deal from ‘82 (when I first heard a catchy Rickenbacker-driven tune called Radio Free Europe) through Monster in the mid-90’s. so tonight when I hit the pub, I’ll probably drop a few quarters (actually, my debit card) into the jukebox (actually, just a touchscreen on the wall) and spin (actually, sellect a MP3 file) from Life’s Rich Pagent, Murmur, or Automatic For the People. and given their street cred, I like the fact we won’t have to suffer through any “reunion” tours, and I doubt we’ll see them at Lakewood in 2020 playing a double bill with (what’s left of ) the Replacements, Smithereens and Oingo Boingo.

Why did REM have to break up and ruin a day of what could have been great music? The Trane rocked. Especially (for me anyway) in that time period when it was him and Thelonius Monk. Ah, takes me back.

Sounds a lot like the comments of Gen. Smedley Butler, USMC, twice awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1935, after retirement, he looked back on his military service and wrote
I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class thug for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Kind of partial to the real early REM. ‘Radio Free Europe’ and the little mini EP album with ‘Wolves Lower’. If you are a native here, you know that Album 88 from Ga State University always played the best Punk and New Wave music in the late 70s, the 80s, into the 90s. They always played REM the 52s and other Athens’ bands.

I checked in yesterday evening and literally couldn’t think of anything to say about REM that could be remotely insightful. Still can’t really, but for the record, there was about a solid decade in which I wouldn’t even consider not buying whatever-their-new-lp-happened-to-be.
For me the string kinda ended when Berry left–they didn’t quite have the magic after that, I didn’t think, but there was still lots of worthwhile stuff, they had a hell of a ride, and Georgians should feel some pride over their accomplishments.

From Sat AJC:
“Young adults lost in recession
Those 18-34 face unemployment and underemployment in such staggering numbers that they risk falling into poverty for years.
In record numbers, they’re struggling to find work, shunning long-distance moves to live with mom and dad, delaying marriage and raising kids out of wedlock, if they’re becoming parents at all. The unemployment rate for them is the highest since World War II, and they risk living in poverty more than others — nearly 1 in 5.’
Sad, but these were the young people that bought into Hope and Change. Perhaps positive, unintended consequence are listed above. Rebirth of the nuclear family, not having children out of wedlock.
That is change I can believe in.

Hey! If they choose to go out and borrow truckloads of money just so they can pay for a Phoenix U. degree, they shouldn’t come back whining about not getting the job they were promised to anyone other than the person that made the promise in the first place and then only if they have that promise in writing and with all the appropriate signatures. By the way, we were offered loans at 1% but we turned them down. It just doesn’t seem right to have to borrow money to get an education so we pay as we go for anything not covered by scholarships and Hope. After all, Hope is pocket change you can believe in.

Tax analogy
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to 100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something
like this …
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay 1.
The sixth would pay 3.
The seventh would pay 7.
The eighth would pay 12.
The ninth would pay 18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay 59.
So, that’s what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball.
“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce
the cost of your daily beer by 20″. Drinks for the ten men would now
cost just 80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So the first four men were unaffected.
They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men?
The paying customers?
How could they divide the 20 windfall so that everyone would get his
fair share?
They realised that 20 divided by six is 3.33. But if they subtracted
that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would
each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s
bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle
of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the
amounts he suggested that each should now pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid 2 instead of 3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid 5 instead of 7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid 9 instead of 12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid 14 instead of 18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid 49 instead of 59 (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began
to compare their savings.
“I only got a pound out of the 20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He
pointed to the tenth man, “but he got 10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a pound
too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”
“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get 10 back, when
I got only 2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get
anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the
bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money
between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how
our tax system works.
The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most
benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not
show up any more.
In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is
somewhat friendlier.

Wisconsin Gov Scott Walkers spokesman granted immunity during federal investigation
Madison – Three days after Cindy Archer was to have started her job as the legislative liaison at the state Department of Children and Families – and while she was already being paid sick leave for it – the agency interviewed someone else for the same job.
Department officials did not fully explain why they interviewed another person to be the legislative liaison. They did not respond to a question asking if they expected Archer to stay in the job for long.
Documents released under the state’s open records law Friday also show the office of Gov. Scott Walker – and not the Department of Children and Families – offered Archer the job at up to 65% more than what the last person to hold the position made. Children and Families Secretary Eloise Anderson never interviewed Archer for the nearly $100,000-a-year job, even though Anderson is responsible for appointing someone to the post.
Archer was granted the job just weeks before her home was raided by the FBI as part of a secret John Doe investigation of current and former Walker aides, dating back to when he was still Milwaukee County executive and running for governor.

Hell Scout everyone knows it’s going to take three to five years to correct the mess that the repubclican led legislature has has created.
And, are you one of those people who lie just to create your own version of the facts?

To me, REM was the greatest band since The Beatles. They didn’t just make a couple of great albums, near all of their albums were great over the 30 year period they were together. Though some think they declined substantially after Bill Berry left, I found the decline to be less than for any other rock band that was still releasing new albums 20 and 30 years after being together. Of the post Berry albums, I found “Up” to be brilliant, “Reveal” to be quite good, “Around the Sun” to be among the most under-rated and unjustifiably panned albums ever. I thought its songs were mostly fantastic, just that it suffered from a laid-back production that sucked the life out of songs that were very good at their core. “Accelerate” and “Collapse into Now” were both great rock albums as far as I’m concerned, even if they were not trend-setting or trend-defying the was some of their early albums were. The problem REM faced post-Berry is not that they weren’t still a great band, it’s that the general public (including many past REM fans) were under the impression that the new stuff just wasn’t so good. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

I guess the bloat figures he’ll just flip out the cash and he will get his care when he wants it. Meanwhile the rest of us will be waiting in the Que.. It is going to be funny though to watch all the old codger’s and emergency room hoppers who supported Obamacare having to wait for the first time in their lives. They are used to going to whichever doctor they want anytime they want. All of that is about to change and you might say that pertaining to this particular this side effect of Obamacare, I am happy to see it. They are still getting off too easy.

Ah what a week. Obama shows his narcissism well in this UN photo op. Was really hoping that was a photoshop. But alas, it wasn’t. And this guy thinks he deserves re-election next year?
http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/09/20/7862290-barack-obama-joins-open-government-partnership-for-group-photo
And about Obama’s war on asthma inhalers because it contributes to man made global warming. No, really….
“Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government’s latest attempt to protect the Earth’s atmosphere. But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, will cost up to $60.”
Yeah talk about hitting the middle class, eh?
And what’s a week without the king of moonbats, Michael Moore. Nothing moore needs to be said here:
“Michael Moore: ‘Patriotic Americans’ Will Wait Longer For Healthcare as everyone will be in line to get it”
All the thinking people know what Obamacare will cost both financially and health care quality wise:
“Nearly 700,000 Tennesseans will gain new coverage under health-care reform, but those already with insurance might have to wait longer to receive care and younger people overall may have to pay more. Those are among findings from a report out from a think tank the state’s largest health insurer, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, launched this year to study the interface between public policy and health care. ‘It will be a little longer line, but everybody will be in the line,’ said Dr. Steven L. Coulter, president of the insurer’s Tennessee Health Institute and co-author of the report with William T. Cecil, an independent health-care consultant.”

“President Barack Obama will raise money in early October with a Missouri businessman whose company benefited from a $107 million federal tax credit to develop a wind power facility in his state. Tom Carnahan, a scion of Missouri’s most prominent Democratic political family, is listed on Obama’s campaign website as a host of a $25,000-per-person fundraiser to be held in St. Louis on October 4.”

I just don’t think the turnout will be nearly enough. Getting mass groups of people out to play a part in putting the first Black man in the White House was a give-me. Even if Obama had been a successful president, the turnout for 2012 wouldn’t have been as much, but he has been a disaster for the Black demographic.
The Democrats were able to convince the population that Bush’s policies of wire tapping and Homeland Security effected them , but we all know that it didn’t. After three years, people are terrified because neighbors are losing their homes. Jobs are gone. And (nobody talks about this) every time you guys play a youtube video of a band, or anyone sees live music whether it be on the internet or a concert stage and that guitar player takes a lead on a wonderful sounding Gibson Guitar, it is a stark reminder of how this administration has been going after real American companies.
I try to never underestimate the power of the greatest political machine ever known to man, but for the first time in my life, I’m seeing the Democrats swinging at every pitch and they keep striking out.

As for Republican job killers, ask Messrs. Purdue and Deal about it. Sonny Perdue was sworn into office January 2003 with unemployment in Georgia at 4.9%. He left and it was what? Nearly 11%?
But it turns out he was just another Uncle Sam-mooching, creative accounting, bleeding heart liberal after all:
Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed a bill that expands unemployment benefits in Georgia. The new law makes the state eligible for $226 million of dollars in federal stimulus dollars for the state’s unemployment insurance fund.
The new law provides another 13 weeks of unemployment benefits in Georgia for those who’ve exhausted their 26 weeks of regular benefits. The additional benefits will be paid for with federal dollars.
The bill signed by Perdue on Tuesday also allows people seeking part-time work to qualify for unemployment. And some Georgians can also receive unemployment while in a training program, under the new law. Perdue said the changes will cost the state less than $1.2 million a year.

I’m guessing those who considered the current president as such a big racial divider, as some conservatives here seem to imply, would find that shocking. Personally, it doesn’t surprise me at all. Seems like most Democratic officials have to cater to the Black community at some time for their support. Obama hasn’t done that at all up until now.

Not to nitpick, but you do realize that African Americans are not necessarily Black. As far as your statement, there’s probably many in the Black community who are simply saying “I told you so.” That message is no different than the message that’s been communicated to Black Americans since we’ve been here. There’s been different meanings behind the message, but the message has always been pretty much the same.

I don’t think it is nearly as complicated as that. I think that most Blacks were very proud of the fact that a man that was sold to them as being a Black man was going to be the first American Black President.
I know this may be a shock to you, but White people, particularly urban Whites don’t live in a vacuum. We see the ads that say “he’s one of us”, I personally have made ads for Black politicians that say exactly that. I mean that’s not exactly saying that he also drives a Chevy.

I think that most Blacks were very proud of the fact that a man that was sold to them as being a Black man was going to be the first American Black President.
Most Blacks were proud of the fact that a man who is 1/2 Black was even considered a serious contender for the office. If you backtrack, you will find most of the Black community supported Hillary Clinton. When it was obvious that Obama had enough support from ALL that he could get the nomination, then the Black support began to rally around Obama.
If your premise was even remotely correct, then had Obama been Republican, he would have gotten 95% of the Black vote, which I very seriously doubt would have happened. Blacks overwhelmingly vote Democratic whether the candidate is Black, White, Christian, Jew, Disabled, or whatever other label you choose to place on them. The majority of Blacks will not support a Republican candidate in the near future, unless that candidate was Jesus himself. It has nothing to do with racial demographics and has more to do with the control apparatus of the party in general.
To quote you, “If you don’t buy it, there’s nothing I can do about that, but to any reasonable onlooker of any race, the conclusions are obvious.”

There’s no explanation for your graph. If you remember, Hillary was in the race long before Obama even decided to run. Blacks did not begin to support Obama until after he won the Iowa primary. Before that point, many Blacks were skeptical that he would even get serious consideration.
I will admit that a Black Republican against a White Democrat would not have carried 95%, but I believe that they would have carried a huge majority.
I’m sure you believe in Bigfoot too. As I said earlier, that will not happen anytime soon. It’s not about race, as much as you want to make it. If you want to point to something about race and the Black vote, consider this…
Bush was invited to speak at the NAACP National Convention several times and continuously turned them down. Conservatives have shown less than desirable respect to the office of the President since Obama was inaugurated. If you want to know why I say Blacks would not give majority support to a Black Republican, it’s because Conservatives have not shown any kind of respect to Blacks in positions of authority/importance in the past decade. If you want respect, you gotta give respect. The modern Conservative lacks the ability to show a smidget of respect for anything they don’t agree with. Chew on that one for a while. It’s not about race, its all about respect. If you want me to treat you as a man, then you’ve gotta treat me as a man. Until you do that, I’m not giving you crap. That’s the mentality you’re working with.

It’s kind of interesting that there seems to be a crowing that President Obama is in trouble with the “Jewish” vote. So? He’s probably not. Given what the GOP is offering and the absence of a third choice, he can still prettty much count on it. But even were he to lose it in it’s entirety, it’s only about 3 million votes. That’s hardly going to make a dent in the outcome outside of New York and Miami. The same can be said for the “gay vote.”
Now, when it comes to PR and pocketbooks, that’s another matter and he needs to be careful there and pay a little closer attention to what’s going on. I know it’s not pc to say so and its my own demographics I’m talking about, but these two do have an impact well beyond their proportional representation in the voting population, bloc voters though they may be. And both have had a strong prediliction to voting Democrat.
For numbers, the two parties have to look to other blocs, Blacks, Latinos, Southern Whites, Christian Conservatives. The parties have to find a way to cobble together some kind of coalition and given the partisanship and hardlines being taken by “sides,” that’s not going to be easy.

I can easily see Atlanta having a white mayor in the not so distant future. The demographics of the city (inside the perimeter) are changing dramatically and, more than many outiside the perimeter would like to admit, the city’s voters are far less concerned than previously with skin tone than they are with the issues affecting us all. “White” candidates can and do appeal to “Black” voters and vice-versa. There is a new political climate among the younger Atlantans as the present old guard passes into the pages of history as did the old guard before them.

If I had a vote in the last election, I would have gone with Norwood over Reed. I don’t judge a candidate based on race. Bias and perception plays a major role in our choices. When you do absolutely nothing to break down those two, you actually play into them and give them more validity.
Recon
For the most part, there is little actual prejudice. The problem in our society is that people simply refuse to confront those things head on and eliminate the perceived biases. If you don’t actively try to knock those barriers down, you can’t move beyond them. There are indeed differences in cultures here, but the similarities far outweight the differences. People focus so much on the negative that they fail to see the positive.

It’s pretty hard to reach a consensus and compromise when none of those charged with the podium at their disposal wants it, And who ever comes in behind him, be it 2012 or 2016, Republican or Democrat, is going to be just as hamstrung, imo.

Good grief ……….. you can’t even have a birthday card section without dividing racially.
It’s not dividing. What you’re seeing is simply free market principles at work. Somebody saw a market for cards, so they provided the product for people to purchase. IF they were not needed, they would not sell and be continuously replaced. Are you suggesting that you don’t like the free market when it works as it should?

No doubt. Even with the past that I’ve had, I don’t focus on race or racial issues. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy life and/or excel at the opportunities that present themselves to me. I agree with you 100%, and I think that most of the problems arise when people self-segregate themselves. That’s completely counter to the “melting pot” idea that America is supposed to represent.

Is that any different than the political pundits who continuously stoke partisanship to keep their pockets filling up? You’re always gonna have jackasses in society. Just because they’re acting an ass does not mean you have to join in with them.

Is that not the same exact thing that Conservatives are asking Black Americans to do en masse by supporting them in elections? C’mon man, that’s not what I’m talking about, but if that’s how it is perceived, then we will never break through any barriers to end this crap.
Bush was the president to all of America, just as Obama is. I’d hold Obama to the same standards if he turned down the US Chamber of Commerce or any other conservative group in the same manner. It’s not a matter of kissing anybody’s ass. It’s a matter of fulfilling your obligations as President of the United States.

Ask and you shall receive – maybe. So, you want to build a web site. The easiest way is the worst way, that is, buy a template. But if you don’t mind a learning curve that will render your site something that you can truly call your own, I would suggest learning HTML 5.0 and CSS. These are languages. There is no cost involved, just time. Then get a text editor. I recommend Aptana Studio 2.0. You can download the software for FREE.
Have fun.

Bro, Exactly my point. Why should any President feel that they have to speak to any individual group? Whether it’s Jew, Catholic, African Americans, Gays, Muslims, etc’
As you stated he is the Presidend of all od us and the sooner everyone realizes that the better off we all will be.
If you kill or beat up a few particular groups it can be considered a hate crime, isn’t it a hate crime if someone beats me up? shouldn’t the punishment fit the crime and not the perrsons sexual preference or the color of their skin?
There are to many groups that feel they should have special treatment and it’s not helping our melting pot.

That we have a “melting pot” is a myth. Moreover, it is a myth that we can do without. This nation is one nation of diverse peoples, cultures, languages and faiths. And it is that diversity that makes this nation uniquely qualified to lead the world, for we are, in a way, the world. We need to give up the false notion that we can throw a brown or yellow body into a melting pot and have them come out some other color with some other idea that we deem are “American”. This nation is not and has truly never been a melting pot; rather it is a mozaic that is at once one yet many.

poison pen: Why should any President feel that they have to speak to any individual group?
A group is made up of individuals, and it is the individual groups that makes America what it is. Candidates have no problem speaking to individual groups when raising money or campaigning for votes, why should it change when one becomes President? Whether it’s Georgians, Blacks, Whites, Old, Young, Male, or Female, the President is still president to one and all. Once we get to the point where special interest groups are no longer necessary, then the president should not be required to address them.
My point is that no President should be able to spend his time dealing with friendly groups. They should all have to face their critics as well. Only then can you test the mettle of the POTUS. If we truly want someone in DC that can build a consensus, it can’t be done by addressing only those who agree with you.

Totally different subject for a totally different post. If someone beats you up based upon their hatred for any particular group you belong to, then yep, it’s a hate crime. If someone beats you up just because you shot off at the mouth at them or something, then no. As I’ve said before, when you remove barriers protecting minorities from needless persecution, you’re only setting yourself up if/when you become the minority. There are some cases where minority groups need added protection. Until we get beyond that, I have no problem with those kinds of laws.
As for me personally, unless they get the drop on me, anybody wishing to come at me wrong because of my skin color had better pack a lunch. They might also check to make sure their medical/life/burial insurance is up to date too.

Nope, I don’t see it that way, there will always be people who want to do harm to other groups, for many reasons. All crimes should be treated equal, you or anyone else should not be treated any different than the person next to you.

The crowd who jumped Reginald Denney are guilty of a hate crime. If I jump your a-double just because you’re straight, that’s a hate crime. Painting a swastika on a Jewish tombstone is a hate crime. Dragging a black man behind a pickup is a hate crime. Shooting a teenager because he’s flying the rebel battle flag is a hate crime. Spitting on somebody because s/he’s speaking Spanish is a hate crime.

If you see hate crimes as asking for a special favor, then we’ll never agree. Until you’ve actually been part of a group who have been, for lack of a better term, sh*tted on throughout history, you’ll never understand. IF people had never been lynched, burned, shot, dragged, or anything else because of nothing other than their skin tone, sexual persuasion, or anything else, you’d have a point. However, history proves your point as moot as our country has a long and sordid history of picking on the minority just because he/she is a minority.

You brought up Reginald Denney before. Those who ganged up on him deserved to have their asses whipped in the same manner. That guy did absolutely nothing to nobody, and he did not deserved to get jumped like that. That was the Webster’s definition of a hate crime as far as I’m concerned.

Good news
During the day, two subcommittees of the House Ways & Means Committee held a joint hearing on tax issues surrounding natural gas including H.R. 1380 – the NAT GAS Act.
Among those who spoke in favor of a short-term, targeted tax exemption to purchase heavy-duty trucks running on clean, domestic natural gas was former member of the Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors, Lawrence Lindsey. Dr. Lindsey pointed out in the hearing that the disparity in fuel costs between diesel and natural gas were significant, saying that a typical long-haul truck running on natural gas would see a “fuel saving of $57,000 per year.”

That sounds all fine and good. The reality is that this country was founded on division and violence, and those two traits will always be a part of our national fabric. The punishment has never fit the crime, or there would be no need for the Justice Dept to have a group still looking into crimes from the Civil Rights Era.
Just because somebody jumps on or kills a Black or gay person doesn’t necessarily make it a hate crime. At the same time, if I jumped on a White person just because he/she was White, that would make me guilty of a hate crime. Whether you want to see it or not, we will always have hate crimes in our society. There are people who make money on stirring up division, and they are not going to give up that gravy train without a substantial fight.
