‘It’s the end of the world as we’ve known it,’ how ya feeling?

Earlier in the week, I was trying to decide which John Coltrane cut I was going to post tonight, given that this would have been the saxophonist’s 85th birthday. Then, well, news happened. R.E.M. announced it was disbanding, which means Trane got pushed aside.

Sorry John (although the guys at R.E.M. are big fans of yours, I hear).

I came to R.E.M. relatively late, at least compared to a lot of folks here in Georgia. But from my first exposure I marveled at their distinctive sound and the fact that somehow, they could come off both lush and economical in their music. Their lyrics were special as well, often funny if absurdly opaque, reaching for and sometimes attaining poetry.

More than any band I can think of, you always wanted to know what their next album would sound like, because it was bound to head off in a new and interesting direction. Following their career was a musical adventure, and after 31 years it has now come to an end.

Thanks, guys. Here’s one of my favorites, as much because of the memories it inspires as much as the music itself:

I concur. I’ve been in both situations as well. I won’t back someone making a claim on bias when there’s none present. At the same time, I’ll stand up for anybody who’s the victim of bias, regardless of who that person is.

You brought up Reginald Denney before. Those who ganged up on him deserved to have their asses whipped in the same manner. That guy did absolutely nothing to nobody, and he did not deserved to get jumped like that. That was the Webster’s definition of a hate crime as far as I’m concerned.

Bro and I addressed that with the Reginald Denney case…

If I spout off to you about whatever and you whup my a33, that’s not a hate crime. If I come in and jump your a33 just because you’re straight, that’s a hate crime. Do I deserve “special” treatment
in the first case…hell no! Do you deserve a special consideration in the second case? Hell, yes.

Well, we don’t need no hate crimes laws. I mean, if there’s a crime just give the regular sentence.

I say this because I’m not a Rascist. I love everybody—Those People, the illegals, the Gays (well, maybe there’s one down in Buckhead I wouldn’t mind seeing in a fatal accident), the jobless, the people on welfare, etc. Us Conservative Republicans don’t hate anybody. It’s just that we love some folks more than others.

So elect us and your troubles are over. Or at least you won’t be making it too long to have any troubles. We’ll let you know how you’re going to do after we get into office.

Good news

During the day, two subcommittees of the House Ways & Means Committee held a joint hearing on tax issues surrounding natural gas including H.R. 1380 – the NAT GAS Act.

Among those who spoke in favor of a short-term, targeted tax exemption to purchase heavy-duty trucks running on clean, domestic natural gas was former member of the Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors, Lawrence Lindsey. Dr. Lindsey pointed out in the hearing that the disparity in fuel costs between diesel and natural gas were significant, saying that a typical long-haul truck running on natural gas would see a “fuel saving of $57,000 per year.”

That sounds all fine and good. The reality is that this country was founded on division and violence, and those two traits will always be a part of our national fabric. The punishment has never fit the crime, or there would be no need for the Justice Dept to have a group still looking into crimes from the Civil Rights Era.

Just because somebody jumps on or kills a Black or gay person doesn’t necessarily make it a hate crime. At the same time, if I jumped on a White person just because he/she was White, that would make me guilty of a hate crime. Whether you want to see it or not, we will always have hate crimes in our society. There are people who make money on stirring up division, and they are not going to give up that gravy train without a substantial fight.

Everybody’s entitled to an opinion. There’s something about Reed that I don’t trust. I can’t quantify it in words, but I don’t trust him. I’m just glad I didn’t have a vote in that election.

I saw all those Norwood signs on the lawns of the upscale Atlanta homes—and not a single one for her opponent. It didn’t take an IQ over 100 to know whose interests she was going to serve.

Amen to that. What kind of sicko takes a vacation in Iraq, other than an Iraqi? And who, other than a resident, wants to be within 100 miles of the border with Iran? Those three hikers are lucky they didn’t find themselves standing atop a bus with nooses tied to their necks. Yet, somebody came up with $500,000 each for bail for the two males and previously for the female. Were the taxpayers socked for that tab?

But would you agree that those hikers are likely to get the Hollywood treatment and wind up looking like heroes? Meanwhile, a gay soldier who was asked by his country to “hike” into Afghanistan gets booed at the Fox/Google GOP debate.

That is also true but doesn’t excuse that “culture” of idiocy.

1) People get too close to our borders? They become championed illegal immigrants with more rights than you and I have (i.e., in-state tuition).

2) People get too close to their borders? They get jailed for two years.

P.S. Hiking along the Dekalb/Gwinnett border is not smart either.

He has consistently worked across the aisle and made tough decisions

Norwood really will just say anything to anyone so long as she thinks it’s what they want to hear
