‘It’s the end of the world as we’ve known it,’ how ya feeling?

Earlier in the week, I was trying to decide which John Coltrane cut I was going to post tonight, given that this would have been the saxophonist’s 85th birthday. Then, well, news happened. R.E.M. announced it was disbanding, which means Trane got pushed aside.

Sorry John (although the guys at R.E.M. are big fans of yours, I hear).

I came to R.E.M. relatively late, at least compared to a lot of folks here in Georgia. But from my first exposure I marveled at their distinctive sound and the fact that somehow, they could come off both lush and economical in their music. Their lyrics were special as well, often funny if absurdly opaque, reaching for and sometimes attaining poetry.

More than any band I can think of, you always wanted to know what their next album would sound like, because it was bound to head off in a new and interesting direction. Following their career was a musical adventure, and after 31 years it has now come to an end.

Thanks, guys. Here’s one of my favorites, as much because of the memories it inspires as much as the music itself:

Kind of partial to the real early REM. ‘Radio Free Europe’ and the little mini EP album with ‘Wolves Lower’. If you are a native here, you know that Album 88 from Ga State University always played the best Punk and New Wave music in the late 70s, the 80s, into the 90s. They always played REM the 52s and other Athens’ bands.

I checked in yesterday evening and literally couldn’t think of anything to say about REM that could be remotely insightful. Still can’t really, but for the record, there was about a solid decade in which I wouldn’t even consider not buying whatever-their-new-lp-happened-to-be.

For me the string kinda ended when Berry left–they didn’t quite have the magic after that, I didn’t think, but there was still lots of worthwhile stuff, they had a hell of a ride, and Georgians should feel some pride over their accomplishments.

From Sat AJC:

“Young adults lost in recession

Those 18-34 face unemployment and underemployment in such staggering numbers that they risk falling into poverty for years.

In record numbers, they’re struggling to find work, shunning long-distance moves to live with mom and dad, delaying marriage and raising kids out of wedlock, if they’re becoming parents at all. The unemployment rate for them is the highest since World War II, and they risk living in poverty more than others — nearly 1 in 5.’

Sad, but these were the young people that bought into Hope and Change. Perhaps positive, unintended consequence are listed above. Rebirth of the nuclear family, not having children out of wedlock.

That is change I can believe in.

Hey! By the way, we were offered loans at 1% but we turned them down. Tax analogy

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to 100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something
like this …

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay 1.
The sixth would pay 3.
The seventh would pay 7.
The eighth would pay 12.
The ninth would pay 18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay 59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball.
“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce
the cost of your daily beer by 20″. Drinks for the ten men would now
cost just 80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So the first four men were unaffected.
They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men?
The paying customers?
How could they divide the 20 windfall so that everyone would get his
fair share?

They realised that 20 divided by six is 3.33. But if they subtracted
that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would
each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s
bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle
of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the
amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid 2 instead of 3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid 5 instead of 7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid 9 instead of 12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid 14 instead of 18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid 49 instead of 59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began
to compare their savings.
“I only got a pound out of the 20 saving,” declared the sixth man. He
pointed to the tenth man, “but he got 10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a pound
too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”
“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get 10 back, when
I got only 2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison, “we didn’t get
anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the
bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money
between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how
our tax system works.
The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most
benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not
show up any more.
In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is
somewhat friendlier.

Wisconsin Gov Scott Walkers spokesman granted immunity during federal investigation

Madison – Three days after Cindy Archer was to have started her job as the legislative liaison at the state Department of Children and Families – and while she was already being paid sick leave for it – the agency interviewed someone else for the same job.

Department officials did not fully explain why they interviewed another person to be the legislative liaison. They did not respond to a question asking if they expected Archer to stay in the job for long.

Documents released under the state’s open records law Friday also show the office of Gov. Scott Walker – and not the Department of Children and Families – offered Archer the job at up to 65% more than what the last person to hold the position made. Children and Families Secretary Eloise Anderson never interviewed Archer for the nearly $100,000-a-year job, even though Anderson is responsible for appointing someone to the post.

Archer was granted the job just weeks before her home was raided by the FBI as part of a secret John Doe investigation of current and former Walker aides, dating back to when he was still Milwaukee County executive and running for governor.

Oh, and Thomas, it’s not how big your pencil is, it’s how you sign your name! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Headline: “Obama’s Plan Won’t Propel Job Growth, Economists Say”

Now Scout where did that headline come from? Oh Fox News! and, what did that headline actually say?

“Obama’s Jobs Plan Wouldn’t Make Huge Dent in Jobless Rate, Economists Say.”

Hell Scout everyone knows it’s going to take three to five years to correct the mess that the repubclican led legislature has has created.

And, are you one of those people who lie just to create your own version of the facts?

You can have your Porsche. Gimme All-American power with either the ZR1 Corvette or SRT8 Challenger any day. I prefer that my horses have an American accent to them.

What am I doing here today? I rarely post on the weekend….but for some odd reason I find myself at home with little to do…….

From Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Sarah Palin this goes out to their supporters.

when Berry left the remaining members were still a band; just not REM.

yeah, pretty much.

(I’d add ‘they were still a GOOD band’, to that; I particularly liked “Accelerate,” myself.)
